Play12 presents

Original Scenes: Love, Misogyny, Deception & Gender IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

D i re c to r ’s No te Welcome to Lawrence Arts Center’s Theatre in South Park! We are back in person, and we are thrilled to bring you outdoor theatre that centers on safety, fun, and being together. Great social justice theatre master Augusto Boal said, “Theatre is the art of looking at ourselves. ” The pandemic has made it clear that live theatre heals. Theatre reminds us what it means to be human and gives us the drive to keep going. The Lawrence Arts Center could not keep going without you, so we want to thank you. Thank you for your support and willingness to participate, either virtually or in-person, as an audience member, parent, student, teacher, or patron. You are why we keep going. We are all in this together, and could not do it without each other. As we continue to find new and better ways to connect, please consider adding your support to ensure the Lawrence Arts Center not only survives, but continues to thrive.

A bo u t Pl ay 1 2 Play12 is the Lawrence Arts Center’s youth performance company. It expands on the fundamentals of acting and focuses on the development of production, creation, community, and leadership skills through public performance. The company is student-led, meaning that students in the company work together as a group to make decisions, create, and present a project or performance during the semester.

How w a s th i s play c reated ? Play12 company members explored the themes of love, misogyny, deception, and gender in some of Shakespeare’s most well-known scenes. Then, using guiding questions, in-depth discussions, and writing prompts, members devised original modern scenes around the themes. The result is a play that weaves Shakespearean language and themes with modern youth writings and ideas.

Meet the Members of Play12 Vincent Brack is an eighth grader at West Middle School and will be attending Free State High School in the fall. Olivia Evans is a junior at Free State High School. This is her first year in Play12. She is involved with theatre, choir, and tennis at Free State, and she is super excited to be a part of such a fun and talented group of people! Spencer Greenwood is a senior at Free State High School. He is part of Chamber Choir, Free State Thespian Club, and the Free State Improv Troupe (which placed top in Kansas during the Tri-State Thespian Festival). He plans on going to community college for two years before transferring to a larger college, where he will focus on acting and musical theatre. Outside of theatre, Spencer loves drawing, graphic design, annoying his sister, and awkwardly singing in the shower an octave below the intended pitch.

Meet the Members of Play12 Ruby Hull is an eighth grader who attends Lawrence Memorial Central Middle School and Lawrence Virtual School. In school, Ruby is involved in MUN, and her favorite school subject is math. Ruby has been involved in theatre, dance, and art at the Lawrence Arts Center since 2015, and is so excited to now be in Play12!

Annika Maximov is 15 years old and is a freshman at Lawrence High School. She grew up in a musicloving family. Her first production was Annie in 2009, and her passion for theatre grew from there. Some of her favorite theatre experiences were Oliver!, Matilda, and Camp Broadway in New York, and, of course, the Lawrence Arts Center’s Summer Youth Theatre. Annika is so excited to be back on stage, with her friends, making magic amidst the chaos!

Chloe Novosel is an eighth grader at Lawrence Memorial Central Middle School. She recently got back into acting, and this is her first year in Play 12! Chloe is involved in gymnastics, circus, and softball. She loves The Great British Baking Show, and her favorite ice cream flavor is vanilla. Chloe is so happy to be in Play12 this year.

Meet the Members of Play12 Amelia Osborn is a third-year member of Play12 and is a senior at Lawrence Free State High School. Amelia will be attending The Theatre School at DePaul University in the fall to study Theatre Management.

Mary Kate Shultz is a junior at Free State High School. This is her third year in Play12. At school, she is involved in theatre, choir, journalism, National Honor Society, LINK Crew, and D&D club. In her free time MK loves to read, write, go thrifting, and try to (and mostly fail at) raise house plants.

Giulia Ventello is 14 years old and an eighth grader at Lawrence Memorial Central Middle School. She has been a part of the Lawrence Arts Center all her life, but this is her first year of Play12! Aside from performing, Giulia loves to bake, jam out to Harry Styles, go for runs, and play with her dog, Rocket. She hopes you have as much fun watching the show as she did making it!
