Thank You, Sponsors!
Special Thanks to... City of Lawrence School of Dance Faculty Our beloved families!
D i re c to r ’s No te Welcome to the School of Dance’s End of Year Showcase! This year’s program is unlike any other in the history of the Arts Center. Our event was canceled in 2020, so this year I cannot help but feel a great sense of gratitude — gratitude that our students have the opportunity to perform for each other, friends, and family; and gratitude for the support of our community as we have faced the challenges brought on by the pandemic. During the past year, not only did our community never quit, they embraced creativity. I’ve always said that dance is a powerful art form, and based on my experience over the course of the past months this statement has never been more true. This weekend we celebrate the achievements of our students and also those who have played a role in loving and caring for us. I couldn’t be prouder of our students and especially our graduating seniors: Audrey Senger, Catharine Richards, Eila Deavours, Maya Sabatini, Jenna Gaston, Taylor Lee, and Zora Lotton-Barker. We applaud their passion for both dance and community, and watch eagerly as they embark on a new stage of their lives. I would like to give special recognition to our faculty, whose inspiration and steadfast determination made this program possible. This special thanks goes to Amanda Pintore, Annie Stark, Anna Hastings, Ashley Sandefur, Cynthia Crews, Claire Buss, Elizabeth Newell, Hope DeYoung-Daniels, Jerel Hilding, Jordyn Manhart, Justin Harbaugh, Kyrstyna Hilding, Maya Tillman-Rayton, Paige Comparato, Shannon Pickett, Tristian Griffin, and Wanwan Cai. I would also like to say thank you to those who are not named in this letter, but who provided health, education, food, transportation, and utilities services. As a community we could not have survived without your tireless work to provide these services. And finally, we are grateful to the City of Lawrence for making it possible for us to do this event safely outside. To those in our audience this weekend, we hope you enjoy our dance and find yourselves also expressing yourself through movement. Enjoy the show! Sincerely, Hanan Misko

Once upon a time there lived a King called Lir and his three children. Their mother, the queen, had passed, and the children were sad because they missed her terribly. The king saw that his children needed a mother, so he decided to marry again. His new bride was called Aoife. She was beauti-
ful, but she was not kind-hearted. Aoife grew jealous of the children and wanted the king all to herself, so she planned to get rid of them. She asked a druid for help, and together they thought up a terrible spell. One day Aoife went with the children to the lakeside, and as they played in the water, she suddenly pulled out a magic wand and waved it over them. There was a flash of light, and the children vanished. In their place were three beautiful white swans. ‘I have put a spell on you,’ said Aoife. ‘Now everything you have will be mine. You will be swans for nine hundred years. Only the sound of a bell can break the spell.’The swans spent three hundred years on the lake, three hundred years on the cold and stormy Sea of Moyle, and three hundred years on the Isle of Glora, until one day when they heard the sound they had waited nine hundred years for. This is the fate of the children of Lir.

Audrey has enjoyed many classes including jazz, hip hop, contemporary, modern, palates, pointe, and ballet, as well as a year in the Lawrence Ballet Theater. Her main focus was ballet until 2016, when she discovered that modern and hip hop were her true calling. She has also enjoyed being a dance assistant for hip hop classes, The Kansas Nutcracker, and volunteering for summer art camps. Audrey plans on taking a gap year before going to college to major in psychology. She may not be majoring in dance, but it’s still her favorite hobby. CLICK FOR SENIOR VIDEO

Maya Sabatini’s life at the Arts Center started when she began coloring outside the lines classes when she was two years old. Within a year she was attending ballet classes and preschool. In 2015, she joined Lawrence Ballet Theatre as a junior member, and became a senior member the following year. This year will have been her 16th year in the School of Dance. In her time at the Arts Center she has been cast in many roles - her favorites include Lucy in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Widow Simone in La Fille Mal Gardee, Miss Clavel in all the iterations of Madeline, and the Hummingbird in The Nutcracker: A Kansas Ballet. Maya’s love of costuming was also fostered in her time at the Lawrence Arts Center. Maya has participated in Summer Youth Theatre’s costuming basics class twice, the second time as an intern. In the Spring of 2020, Maya completed an independent study in costume design at Lawrence Free State High School. The following summer she worked with UMKC’s Paula Weber to construct a classical tutu. While she has yet to decide which school she will attend next year, she plans to major in costume design with a minor in art history. CLICK FOR SENIOR VIDEO
