Artist Louis Copt has been painting full-time since 1984. He received a BA in art from Emporia State University in 1971, studied at the Art Students League in New York City, and has taken classes in drawing and painting at the University of Kansas. In 2011, Copt was named “Governor’s Artist” by the Kansas Arts Commission. He is a past board member of the Lawrence Arts Center and past President of the Lawrence Arts Commission and Lawrence Art Guild. Louis shows regularly in galleries throughout the midwest, including the Leopold Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri; the Strecker-Nelson Gallery in Manhattan, Kansas; and the Reuben Saunders Gallery in Wichita, Kansas. Louis has participated in a number of national juried exhibitions, and his work is collected by people throughout the world. January 13 - February 25 Receptions: January 13 | 7-9 pm and January 27 | 5-9 pm INSIGHT ArtTalk: January 18 | 7pm

Richard Gwin and Mike Yoder are well regarded photographers, both of whom live in Lawrence and spent many years taking photographs with the Lawrence Journal World. Their combined years of work, documenting the history and people of Lawrence, serve as a rich resource for contemplating the community’s future. This exhibition provides insight into each photographer’s approach to capturing the essence of their individual subjects.

Daniel Rozin: Penguins Mirror

January 13 - February 25 Receptions: January 13 | 7-9 pm and January 27 | 5-9 pm

Penguins Mirror is an installation comprised of 450 motorized stuffed penguins. Playing with the compositional possibilities of black and white, each penguin turns from side to side in response to the presence of an audience. The penguins’ collective intelligence is puzzling yet somehow familiar as the plush toys enact a precise choreography rooted in geometry. For nearly three decades, Daniel Rozin’s practice has investigated the structure and materiality of images. Employing a range of materials––everything from trash to hand fans––Rozin probes at what constitutes an image, as well as what can be transformed into one. Rozin’s series of kinetic “mirrors” are made with materials that become unexpectedly “reflective,” responding to a person’s presence via a camera and physical computing or custom software. Reflection and surface transformation become a means to explore human behavior, representation, and perception.
