Exhibitions

JT Daniels | The Joys of Ineptitude

January 14-February 26

JT Daniels is a social activist who uses his art to support and lift up the community.

His murals can be seen throughout Kansas City, adorning the walls of small businesses, streetcar stops, galleries, and local neighborhoods. Most recently he was commissioned to create a mural for the new Merc Coop, and his paintings were included in an exhibit at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. His work weaves together elements including characters and phrases into streamlined designs that represent the heartbeat of the urban community. Overlapping faces and figures within the illustrations are visual representations of people Daniels has interacted with. These conversations and interactions become the compositions that signify the always transforming and growing human experience. This exhibition will pull together mediums and styles Daniels has explored during his career.

For generations, the family of Chris Wolf Edmonds has placed a high value on creativity and the arts. Dating back at least as far as her great grandparents, through paint, fabric, yarn or wood, craft has aspired to become art. Centered around Chris Wolf Edmonds extraordinary body of work, this show will also include the work of her late father, LW Wolf; her son, Jason Edmonds; her daughter, Brynn Edmonds Burns; and additional special guests.

2022 Benefit Art Auction Exhibition FEATURED ARTIST JT DANIELS

March 11-April 9

The annual Benefit Art Auction serves at the primary funding source for the Exhibitions Program at the Lawrence Arts Center. The galleries exhibit diverse artists in all media, ranging from local preschool children to internationally known artists. For the past 42 years, it has been a priority to keep exhibits free and open to the public. Artists generously donate original artworks at the Benefit Art Auction. Viewing and bidding on original art will be open to all beginning March 11.

The Linda Reimond Preschool and Kelly Galloway Kindergarten Exhibition features works from preschool and kindergarten students at the Lawrence Arts Center. Illuminating the roots of imagination through fearless creativity, this exhibit offers a rare and stirring glimpse of the origin of ingenuity and inspiration.

Arts Center early childhood students have the opportunity to work with professional artists, actors, dancers, and musicians, attend performances, and create in the studios. Creative confidence and innovative skills are clear in the work of these very young students.

USD 497 Public Schools Art Exhibition

April 29-May 13

The annual USD 497 public schools show features works selected by art teachers of K-12 students from across Lawrence. Showcasing a cross-section of the diverse, excellent visual arts programming in Lawrence Public Schools, this exhibit spotlights the value of arts learning and the importance of fine arts programs in public education. When viewed after the Lawrence Arts Center arts-based early childhood art exhibition, the show provides a fascinating look at the trajectory of artistic development and creative growth happening every day in Lawrence.

The Lawrence Arts Center’s Arts-Based Preschool offers a creative, developmentally appropriate approach to early childhood education. The foundation is child-centered experiences—arts, play, discovery, experiencebased curriculum, and outdoor play. The program’s caring, thoughtful, early educational environment nurtures creative thinking, problem solving, imagination, confidence, cultural awareness, and social/emotional skills that last a lifetime.

The Kelly Galloway Kindergarten has a special focus on preparing young students to develop innovation skills, the creative arts- and playbased curriculum sets the foundation for a lifetime love of learning. Unique learning centers are custom-designed daily to engage young children and to offer creative hands-on ways of learning academic skills.

Join us as Princess Aurora is cursed by an evil fairy and doomed to sleep for a hundred years.

Threads, Weaving the Tapestry of Lawrence Freedom Calling Actors Grades 4 & up + Adults for an Original New Play by Ric Averill Join Ric Averill in creating a family history of who founded or found Lawrence. Lawrence’s good, bad, and sometimes ugly relationship to abolition and the founding of our Free State is explored as we play out stories from prehistory to the here and now. Sound ambitious? Alternately comically absurd and deadly serious, actors will breathe life into each portrait of a Lawrence family facing the winds of temperance, women’s suffrage, civil rights, anti-war, women’s rights, the gay rights movements and more - you’ll be part of healing the past to prepare for a new future.

Lawrence Dance Intensive 2022 WINTER & SUMMER PROGRAMS!

Join us this winter and summer for remarkable dance experiences in downtown Lawrence. Held in Lawrence Arts Center dance studios, this program offers dancers opportunities for artistic growth through world-class instruction by accomplished faculty, guest artists, and choreographers.

Since 2016, the Lawrence Dance Intensive has provided regional dancers with quality artistic and development opportunities. LDI returns in 2022 to host winter and summer programs. Based on a diverse and well-balanced curriculum, this program strives to develop the artists of tomorrow.

No pre-screening or audition is required to attend. Dancers must be 10 to 18 years of age by the start of the intensive and dancing at an Intermediate/Advanced level. Senior Intensives may include a level assessment on the first day of the program. More information on financial aid and the intensive can be found on the website.
