lenn Bickle became blind in his right eye about six years ago, after multiple unsuccessful attempts to repair a torn retina. About four years ago a cataract in his left eye developed, seemingly all at once, the retired theater stage manager said. “I woke up one morning, and that was it.” Bickle was blind. Both eyes. Bickle, now 85, moved into assisted living and out of the home

Former KU stage manager, once blind, has new sight near Sixth and Indiana streets where he’d lived for decades and also housed many a Kansas University student for cheap rent in a spare room. Bickle himself — a former Navy Seabee originally from South Dakota — worked for KU, spending 30 years as stage manager for University Theatre.

In 1957, Bickle became the first theater stage manager to be classified by the state of Kansas, according to a KU certificate honoring his years of service. By the time Bickle retired in 1987 he’d ushered through a few of the university’s more famous Please see SEE, page 2A

The mission of the program, which the Kansas Legislature established in 1978, is to provide monetary compensation for victims of violent crimes.
