Santa has his reindeer, but downtown Law rence has its Christmas horses.

The Lawrence OldFashioned Christmas Parade will be back for its 29th year, and just like in years past, the horses will take center stage.

This year’s parade is set for 11 a.m. on Dec. 3 in downtown Lawrence. The event bills itself as one of the most unique parades in the country because it shuns motorized vehicles and instead features carriages, wag ons, coaches and other fine vehicles from yesteryear that are pulled by teams of horses.

The event got started in 1993 with 21 entries, but has grown as large as 70 entries before having to take a one-year break due to the pandem ic, according to information on the event’s website.

“The Lawrence Old Fashioned Christmas Parade is all about memo ries — those from the past and hope fully creating new ones to carry home with us,” organizers say on line. “Our goal is to take you back to a previous time, perhaps more sim ple in some ways but certainly more difficult in others.”

For spectators, the biggest dif ficulty is likely finding your spot to watch the event. The parade histori cally attracts tens of thousands of spectators to downtown Lawrence on the first Saturday of December.

Downtown has multiple parking garages and surface parking lots, with several options on both New Hampshire and Vermont streets. Both of those streets are just a block off of Massachusetts Street.

Massachusetts Street between Seventh and 11th streets is the stretch of the parade route that attracts the largest number of spectators, as peo ple set up lawn chairs outside the shops and restaurants that line the five-block stretch of downtown.

But spectators in past years also have been able to get a good look at parade entries farther south on

Massachusetts Street, stretching all the way to 15th Street. South Park lines Massachusetts Street just south of 11th Street, providing crowds with more room to spread out while watching the parade.

Parts of East Lawrence also have offered viewing opportunities, in cluding New Jersey Street between Seventh and 15th Streets, and also 15th Street, east of New Jersey Street, stretching toward the Doug las County Fairgrounds.

Past parade routes have been about 7 miles long, starting and ending at the Douglas County Fair grounds in eastern Lawrence.

Parade entries were still being finalized at press time, but past pa rades have included many historic

and authentic frontier wagons, rang ing from Wells Fargo stagecoaches to funeral hearses to covered wag ons and special mounted groups such as the Nicodemus County Buf falo Soldiers and various military and law enforcement units and their horses.

The holiday season in Lawrence and Douglas County is full of longtime traditional events and fun new ones too. Here’s a look at several standouts:

Sweet and tangy chicken thighs with pasta rice

Chicken:

8 boned chicken thighs

6 tablespoons Dijon mustard

2 teaspoons curry powder

2/3 cup honey

Salt, pepper, and a pinch of cayenne

Pasta rice:

1/2 cup broken spaghetti

1 tablespoon oil

2 cups white rice

Spread a thin layer of cranberry sauce on the inside of the top bun halves. Put these over the last cheese layer and press lightly. Stir the mustard and poultry seasoning into the melted butter and brush over the top of the assembled sliders.
