Returning to Learning: Eudora School District’s Plan to Re-Open School
2020
continues to be an interesting year. At Eudora Schools, we have worked to respond to the challenges created by COVID-19. Last spring, teachers were committed to providing students with continued learning. Innovation with regards to teaching and learning developed literally overnight. As we head into the 2020-2021 school year, we have been able to spend a great deal of time planning for the return to school, providing a model that responds flexibly to the growing changes with COVID-19. Our Return to School Plan has three phases (Green, Yellow, and Red), which are in response to the LawrenceDouglas County Health Department’s guidance and directives, as it relates to public gatherings, schools, and best health and safety practices. The Eudora Board of Education will make decisions based on the directives
provided by the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department regarding the implementation of on-site learning, hybrid (a combination of on-site and remote learning), and remote learning. During the Green Phase, we would be experiencing low levels of community restrictions. All students would be attending school as part of the “On-Site” learning model, five (5) days per week. Under this learning model, masks would be required, as part of a normal learning day. Mitigation best practices, such as the practice of regularly washing hands and sanitizing equipment, learning supplies, and workspaces, will be part of our routines. The Yellow Phase would be when moderate community restrictions are deemed necessary by the LawrenceDouglas County Health Department. Per the direction of the Eudora Board of CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Education, we would apply our “Hybrid” model. Students will be divided into two cohort groups, an A Group and a B Group, to learn using a combination of on-site and remote learning practices. Group A would engage in on-site learning on Mondays and Tuesdays, while learning remotely, from home, on Thursdays and Fridays. Group B would learn remotely on Mondays and Tuesdays, and in-person on Thursdays and Fridays. All students would learn remotely on Wednesdays. This unique schedule will reduce the number of students in our building each day and allow us to provide a deep clean in the middle of the week. Our last phase, the Red Phase, would be applied when the LawrenceDouglas County Health Department places high levels of restrictions on the community. With this in mind, our Board of Education would direct our schools to implement our “Remote” model for all students. Under this model, all students would be taking part in learning from home five (5) days per week. In the event that Remote learning is needed, whether it is part of the Hybrid Learning model or required of all students in the Red Phase, online education will be taught by Eudora teachers. When learning remotely, lessons may include, but not be limited to, Zoom meetings (large/small group and one-on-one), online assignment submission, independent study, videos, readings, hands-on projects, and research. The district has created a Parent Choice Plan for families who require a 100% Remote option. Under this model, students would not move between instructional models in relation to the various phases. 100% Remote students would engage in 6.5 hours worth of work each day, consisting of, but not limited to Zoom meetings (large/small group and one-on-one), online assignment submission, independent study, videos, readings, hands-on projects, and research. Parents may reevaluate their decision and move into our Return to School model after each quarter. As we head into the school year, our Board of Education is committed to giving families as much advanced notice as possible, when movement between phases is required. Our teachers are excited to begin working with students again. The uniqueness of this school year brings about many great opportunities and possibilities.

Notifications and mobile app connect schools and families
T
he district’s automated parent notification system is a powerful way for parents and guardians of Eudora Schools students to receive important information from the school district. Messages from the principal or other district representatives are delivered by any combination of phone, e-mail and SMS text message to notify families within minutes of an emergency or unplanned event that might cause a change in the school schedule or routines. The system also is used to alert parents when
a student is absent without known parental permission. Parents are encouraged to visit https://eudoraschools. parentlink.net/smartlink/, or scan the QR code with your mobile device, to download our mobile app. Our easy to navigate mobile app provides parents and families an opportunity to stay connected on the go while pulling content from our website and social media. Any user can customize the content and set up push notifications to stay in the loop. “The district’s use of
automated notifications, social media, and website play a large role in keeping parents informed,” said Mark Dodge, director of school improvement and communications. “Eudora Schools believe it is important to ensure parents are informed be it a student absence, notification of a crisis drill or school closure due to inclement weather.” Scan this code with an iOS or Android device and you will be taken to the appropriate location to download the app.

Eudora Schools Food Service and Transportation Departments Team Up to Feed the Children of Eudora
W
hen diffi cult times appear, the Eudora community comes together. It is what Eudora does and what makes this community a great place to raise a family. That spirit is embedded within the staff of Eudora Schools. When Kansas Schools were shut down by Governor Kelly in March of this year, Eudora Schools staff came together to ensure Eudora children, ages 1 to 18, would be fed throughout the remainder of the school year, extending to the end of June 30, 2020. Leading the charge were Eudora Schools Food service and Transportation departments. “It felt good knowing that we were able to help our families during such a diffi cult and unusual time,” said Sharla Miller, Director of Food & Nutrition Services. “It was wonderful to see all the smiles on our students’ faces when they saw us passing out locations spread throughout our community. “We thoroughly enjoyed getting to see our students and families again. Seeing the students’ huge smiles when they would see us and knowing we were able to provide some normalcy for them, is what made this such a wonderful experience,” said Machaela Beshears, Director of Transportation. “It not only helped our students and families, but it helped us as a department.
