Halloween costume a hit

Lenexa — Independent U.S. Senate candidate Greg Orman delivered a stinging rebuke to both political parties Wednesday in a speech that was billed as his “closing argument” in the 2014 campaign. Speaking in a Johnson County warehouse to about 100 supporters, as well as the national and international press, Orman struck a populist tone by accusing

50 tons of recyclables collected

awrence’s new curbside recycling program is off and running, and city officials are pleased with the first day’s haul. City crews collected 50 tons of material to be recycled on Tuesday, which was the first day of operations. Lawrence Public Works Director Chuck Soules said the Day 1 operations went well. “The crews did a great
job,” Soules said. “And that is 50 tons of trash that will not be going to the landfill.” The city had used a working number of 5,000 tons per year as a goal. If the 50 tons per day rate continues — that’s a big if because we’ve only seen one day’s worth of data — the city would more than double that 5,000 ton projection.

Topeka — The Kansas Supreme Court is finding itself in the cross-hairs of this year’s electoral politics for its decision this year overturning the death sentences of two convicted killers, a ruling that prompted renewed debate over the way justices are appointed. Kansas Republican Party chairman Kelly Arnold said in an email newsletter
Wednesday that he is encouraging voters to vote no on retaining two of the justices involved in that ruling, Lee Johnson and Eric Rosen. In July, the court ruled 6-1 to vacate the death sentences of Jonathan and Reginald Carr, who were convicted of the December 2000
