Courts now grappling with gay marriage By Peter Hancock Twitter: @LJWpqhancock
Topeka — Gay and lesbian couples filed Thursday into county courthouses in Kansas to apply for marriage licenses, and in many cases courts waived the standard three-day waiting period so the eager couples could get married immediately.
That was the result of a U.S. Supreme Court order Wednesday, lifting a stay on a lower court’s temporary injunction, directing court clerks in Douglas and Sedgwick counties to start processing licenses for same-sex couples. Some other counties, including Shawnee and Riley Please see COURTS, page 2A

Topeka — McPherson school district Superintendent Randy Watson has been named the next education commissioner of Kansas, pending negotiation of a final contract. The Kansas State Board of Education voted Thursday morning to offer him the job, but the 7-3 vote indicated that some board members have reservations. He would succeed Diane DeBacker, who resigned in May to take a job with the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council in the United Watson Arab Emirates. DeBacker left earning $170,000 a year, and agency officials said Watson is expected to be offered a comparable salary. Watson was not immediately available for comment after the vote. “We had two really good candidates that I would have been happy with, said board member Ken Willard, R-Hutchinson. “He knows Kansas better. I think he’ll be a quicker start-up to take us to the next level, which is student success, and measuring that. He interviewed very well, and as soon as he interviewed, I was ready to select him. Watson has been superintendent in McPherson since 1993. Before that he served six years as principal at Concordia High School, three years as a teacher and coach at Andover High School and three years as a teacher and coach at Tescott High School.
