TOPEKA — To say conservatives felt emboldened at the start of the 2011 legislative session in January would be an understatement. The results of the 2010 election put state government in their hands. In landslide victories, Sam Brownback won the gover-

nor’s race and national antiillegal immigration crusader Kris Kobach was elected secretary of state. And an arch-conservative group of House candidates rode a political tidal wave to give Republicans the largest majority in the House in half a century. They delivered budget cuts to public schools, anti-abortion regulations and put the

state on a path toward reducing pensions for state employees. And they said that was just a warm-up for 2012. Look for attempts, led by Brownback, to overhaul the state tax system next year. The session ended in the early morning hours of May 13, but today marks the official, ceremonial end. On the way, some officials made state, national and even

international headlines with what they did or said or both. Now that the 2011 session is officially in the books, here are the top 10 moments that created buzz under the Capitol dome. Please see TOP 10, page 5A ● Brownback defends his

A woman died after being struck by a piece of metal that fell from an oncoming vehicle Tuesday afternoon on the South Lawrence Trafficway north of Clinton Parkway, Douglas County Sheriff’s officials said. Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said officers believed the metal object fell from an eastbound pickup truck hauling a trailer, struck the windshield of a northbound white pickup truck and injured the woman, who was a passenger. She later died. Later Tuesday, investigators were still looking for the eastbound pickup truck, and Hornberger said it was described as a dark-colored pickup truck that was pulling a 16-foot-long flatbed trailer carrying a large piece of equipment, possibly an old tractor. Hornberger called the driver a “person of interest” who might have information regarding the accident. “It’s very possible they are not even aware that this piece of metal came from their pickup truck or trailer,” the undersheriff said. The accident occurred at 12:15 p.m., and Hornberger encouraged anyone who was in the area around noon or later who might have any information about the accident to call the sheriff’s office at 785-843-0250, 785-841-0007 or Douglas County Crime Stoppers at 785-843-TIPS. “We are actively looking for the other vehicle,” the undersheriff said. Based on a photo from the scene of the white pickup truck, the metal object apparently punctured a hole in the windshield on the passenger side. Hornberger said officers were working to notify family members out of state before releasing the name or further details about the woman. He said he was not aware of any other injuries associated with the accident. — Reporter George Diepenbrock can be reached at 832-7144. Follow him at Twitter.com/gdiepenbrock.

High price of fuel also ‘eating into profits’ at Lawrence’s airport By Ian Cummings Special to the Journal-World

About this series Kansas University School of Journalism students in the advanced classes of Scott Reinardy, Julie Denesha and Mike Williams produced this series about the effects of escalating gasoline prices in Lawrence. This is Part 3.

If the price of aviation fuel continues to rise, Seth Fox said he’ll fill his plane with ordinary gasoline. After landing his two-seat Cessna at Lawrence Municipal Airport, Fox, a pilot from Atchison, said he wasn’t kidding about the gas. He’s done it before, although it did cause the plane’s single engine to fail during landing. Fox said that was “no big deal.”
