Side effects of energy drinks cause spike in E.R. visits By Christine Metz cmetz@ljworld.com

Nasty side effects from drinking too many energy drinks are causing a sharp increase in the number of visits to emergency rooms across the country. A federal report released last month from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration showed that the number of emergency visits involving energy drinks increased more than tenfold between 2005 The kids are and 2009. Center at Kansas “Mostly it’s University from concerned parents. The kids are drinking these like sodas. It’s becoming part of their daily routine. And it’s stressing the heart out every time they are doing it,” said Tama Sawyer, director of the poison control center. Too much caffeine causes the heart to beat faster and stronger, raises blood pressure and causes insomnia. Other side effects are headaches and a jittery feeling that turns to more severe anxiety. “Many people who use energy drinks are in their teens and 20s, and they don’t think they are in danger until something happens, and then they go to the emergency room,” Sawyer said. The research, which was reported in the Drug Abuse Warning Network, noted that a can or bottle of an energy drink can have between 80 to 500 milligrams of caffeine. That’s compared with a 5-ounce cup of coffee, which has about 100 mg, or a 12-ounce can of soda, which has 50 mg. The report also noted that certain additives (and the most popular brands have quite a few) may compound the stimulant effects of caffeine. “The listing of caffeine doesn’t seem so bad, but it’s not giving you the full story,” Sawyer said. “It can be more like three cups of coffee per can.”

Roll out the red carpet. Put on the prom dress. Smile for the paparazzi. It is tax season. That’s right, tax season. And that means it is time for our annual awards program: The Taxis, where we take a look at fun facts and figures related to the tax rates of every government in Douglas County that has the honor of charging a property tax. Per usual, most of the awards will go to governments, such as cities, counties, townships and — who knows? — maybe even a dark-horse candidate like a cemetery board or a watershed district. Wouldn’t that keep them talking on “Entertainment Tonight”? Don’t worry, though. Ordinary citizens are sure to receive something too. Tax bills and statements were mailed to all property owners in Douglas County in late November. First half tax payments are due Tuesday. But enough with the Barbara Wa-Wa chit-chat. Let’s get on with the show:

Shine up the orange cones and get out the detour map. Lawrence City Hall leaders are seeking approval for a host of new road projects for 2012. City commissioners at their Tuesday evening meeting will be asked to approve a formal street maintenance plan for the coming year, and they’ll also be told new numbers are suggesting the city’s renewed emphasis on streets is paying off. The city is reporting that the number of potholes on city streets declined significantly from a year CITY ago. Through early November, COMMISSION the city has patched 10,901 potholes. That’s down from 30,472 potholes the city patched in all of 2010. Mark Thiel, the city’s assistant director of public works, said the city’s patches are lasting longer now that crews can use a new spray injection patcher that allows potholes to be filled during any weather conditions. “That piece of equipment has helped us tremendously,” Thiel said. “Typically when we Please see STREETS, page 2A
