Report: IARP ruling on KU hoops expected today

The long-awaited ruling from the Independent Accountability Resolution Process, which could hand out penalties for NCAA infractions initially alleged four

years ago against the Kansas men’s basketball team, is expected to arrive today, according to a report from Sports Illustrated. KU has been charged with a lack of institutional control and a violation of head coach responsibility,

along with three additional Level I violations, the highest level of severity. The case essentially centers on whether apparel company Adidas was functioning as a booster — a representative of the interests of KU Athletics — when its

agents committed recruiting infractions in the cases of eventual KU athletes Silvio De Sousa and Billy Preston, as well as several other prospective athletes. While Preston never played for KU, De Sousa participated in 20 games

as a freshman, including 15 wins that the NCAA could potentially require the Jayhawks to vacate.

As the Journal-World has previously reported, the NCAA also included in May 2020 documentation

Eudora girls golf headed to 4A State

Free State’s Randall commits to golf at South Dakota State

Several area golfers can declare themselves state-bound after a string of strong performances at their regional tournaments on Monday.

The Eudora girls golf team, which claimed its first Frontier League title last week, punched its ticket to the Class 4A tourney with a fourthplace overall finish in Wamego.

Eudora senior Joellen Vogt finished second individually shooting a team-best 85 through 18 holes.

Sophomore Marleigh Grant wasn’t far behind, finishing 11th individually with 95.

Rounding out the Cardinals’ state-qualifying finish were freshman Brooklyn Akers in 18th (104), senior Olivia Lawhorn in 54th (134), and junior Brette Hayden, who tied for 56th (137).

Free State senior Liza Engelbrecht placed 21st individually (93) to qualify for state at the 6A regional in Topeka.

The 4A and 6A tournaments are slated for Oct. 16-17 at Salina Municipal Golf Course and Emporia Municipal Golf Course, respectively.

FSHS, LHS to honor former superintendent at City Showdown

Former Lawrence school district superintendent Randy Weseman, who died in January 2022 after a battle with cancer, will be honored Friday with a memorial plaque during the City Showdown between Free State and Lawrence football teams at FSHS.

A group of former district administrators plan to honor Weseman before kickoff during a ceremony in the south end zone. Former Free State athletic director Steve Grant said Weseman’s contributions to the creation of matching outdoor athletic facilities at FSHS and LHS in 2009 are part of his recognition.

The memorial effort was spearheaded by former school board member Cindy Yulich, former West Middle School principal Mick Lowe, former LHS athletic director Ron Commons, former LHS coach Dirk Wedd and longtime district swim coach Pat Grzenda.

We have reached the halfway point of the Kansas football season, if you can believe it, though the Jayhawks have a chance to displace the mid point a little further if they can pick up one more win.

Yes, KU is not far away from adding a bowl game to its schedule for the second straight year. And while the Jayhawks have played in 13 bowls in their history, only once have they reached the postseason in consecutive

years. That came in 2007 and 2008, the height of the Mark Mangino era, when KU won the Orange and Insight bowls. It has not won a bowl game since.

The Jayhawks still need one more win to ensure they can keep playing into

December. They have a chance to pick that up on the road this weekend, but for now, they sit six games into a 12-game regular season. That provides a convenient opportunity to take a quick look at how they have fared as compared to expectations thus far this year, and the best way to do so is on a position-byposition level — much as we previewed the season before it started.

Quarterbacks

This may be the most disappointing position on the roster thus far, if only due to high expectations and circumstances largely outside of the coaches’ and players’ control — namely, Jalon Daniels, fresh off his Big 12 Conference preseason offensive player of the year nod, suffering chronic back tightness that has already caused him to miss three games.

OU reaches middle of final Big 12 season with AP’s top coach, players

Oklahoma is already piling up plenty of accolades in its final Big 12 season.

A year after their first losing season since 1998 and the week after a comeback Red River rivalry win over Texas, the fifth-ranked Sooners (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) are the league’s only undefeated team.

Oklahoma also has the top coach, top offensive player

and best defensive player so far this season, according to a midseason vote of Associated Press writers who cover the league.

Second-year Sooners coach Brent Venables, quarterback Dillon Gabriel and linebacker Danny Stutsman were top picks revealed Tuesday. Oklahoma also had the top firstyear freshman with strong safety Peyton Bowen.

“I think it goes without saying ... we’re better in every area. We’re not where

want to be. But this is the next step,” Venables said after the 34-30 win over Texas. “This team is a very determined football team. There’s a lot of belief for having 63 new players on the squad, this is a team that’s close. There’s a lot of trust and respect. We have a very selfless football team.”

The Sooners already have a record 14 Big 12 championships, and this is their last season with an opportunity to add to

that total before moving with the Longhorns to the Southeastern Conference next year.

Top coach The Sooners are 6-0 for the 10th time since 2000, when Venables was defensive coordinator for their last national championship. He was later part of two national titles with Clemson before returning to Norman last season.

Check-in

That in turn led, in one case, to Jason Bean finding out he was starting at then-No. 3 Texas, half an hour before kickoff.

Even when Daniels has played, he hasn’t been fully unleashed. The closest he got was against Illinois when he made plays outside the pocket to escape the stout Illini defensive front, but by the next week at Nevada, the coaching staff was set on limiting his running to keep him healthy for conference play (which, ultimately, he is not).

I don’t think anyone foresaw the Jayhawks at No. 100 in the country in passing offense. One encouraging sign is that both Daniels and Bean have avoided turnovers. KU is one of just eight teams in the country to have thrown one or fewer interceptions, and just one of two to have done so in six games played.

You have to imagine at some point that the Jayhawks will need to take the top off a defense. And at least for now, Bean seems like the one who will have to do it, as head coach Lance Leipold said Monday that Daniels did not practice on that day and that he had received no additional update on the injury.

Running backs Devin Neal is averaging 7.7 yards per carry as the lead back and Daniel Hishaw Jr. has erased any and all doubts about how he would return from last season’s severe hip injury. Neal will fake out an entire defense with a welltimed cut and Hishaw will take on every defender in his way (as UCF’s Quadric Bullard learned on Saturday). The result is a dynamic duo that ranks second in the nation in rushing yards for a pair of players.

Oklahoma

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1B

His 6-7 debut as Oklahoma’s head coach included a humiliating 49-0 loss to the rival Longhorns, but all four losses after that last season were by three points.

Top offensive player Gabriel was the only unanimous choice among the midseason picks. The left-handed thrower from Hawaii is the Big 12 leader completing 72% of his passes for 313 yards per game with 16 touchdowns. The UCF transfer in his second Sooners season has a team-high five rushing touchdowns and ranks fourth nationally with 347.7 total yards per game.

Top defensive player Stutsman, a 6-foot-4, 236-pounder from Florida, is the Big 12’s leading tackler with 9.7 per game, picking up where he left off last season when he topped the conference with 9.6. His 10 1/2 tackles for loss already match his 13-game total last year.

Top first-year freshman Bowen, a five-star recruit and early enrollee at Oklahoma last January, has 23 tackles and leads the Sooners with four pass breakups. He has

Saturday’s 399-yard performance, which, by the way, included 91 yards and two touchdowns from transfer third-stringer Dylan McDuffie, demonstrated the full potential of a rushing attack that had already been chugging along quite nicely.

Wide receivers

This position group has been dragged down statistically by the passing offense’s unremarkable production. The talk prior to the season was all about how the group was six or seven returning players deep, but beyond Lawrence Arnold, Luke Grimm and Quentin Skinner, the unit has combined for 10 catches.

The starters have played well, even if their numbers don’t pop off the page yet. Arnold’s 77 yards against Missouri State and 89 against Illinois keyed both of those wins. Grimm always seems to know where to go when a quarterback is out of the pocket, and hauled in two key touchdowns from Daniels against BYU. And Skinner’s highlight-reel, leaping catch against Nevada helped rescue the Jayhawks. Not to mention that they have all embraced the responsibility of blocking for the prolific run game. No one in this group has taken over a game, though. No one has cleared 90 yards in a single appearance yet after the starting trio produced six such performances in 2022.

Tight ends

It’s a similar deal here, though the downfield blocking by Mason Fairchild, Jared Casey and Trevor Kardell has been even more responsible for the holes opened for Neal, Hishaw and company.

Fairchild had 20 catches in the last four games of 2022 but has tallied just 13 through six games this season. Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki looked to get him involved in playaction against UCF Saturday, which bodes well for his usage as the season goes on now that KU has established a successful rushing formula. Camp standout Kardell has just four catches, matching Casey, but has shown good body control and a knack for getting open in

key moments.

Offensive line

Even as practically everyone on the line has suffered some sort of minor ailment, they’ve managed to hold together to open enormous holes for the running backs and only allow one sack per game. Tackles Dominick Puni and Bryce Cabeldue have shone practically all year. Kobe Baynes has rotated through at guard to accompany projected starters Michael Ford and Ar’maj ReedAdams, and all three, albeit with some rough patches, haven’t been far behind. Mike Novitsky has continued to anchor the team as a center and team captain, even after missing a lot of practice leading up to the UCF game.

Leipold said Monday he’d like to expand this rotation even further if he can. Wisconsin transfer tackle Logan Brown has been injured and hasn’t played since Illinois, though, and “we’re not quite there yet” with KU’s younger tackles, Leipold said.

Defensive line

What projected as perhaps the single weakest position group on the team has transformed into an unexpected strength, highlighted by Minnesota transfer Austin Booker, who is tied for the Big 12 lead with five sacks. Even with his emergence as a game-wrecker, though, KU has had success with exactly the by-committee, rotational approach it planned to use from the opening days of fall

camp. In fact, KU leads the conference in sacks at 18.

It’s a good thing for the Jayhawks that they’ve already given snaps to so many players because their depth is about to be tested. Both Hayden Hatcher and Jereme Robinson, the named starters on each edge, sustained injuries late in Saturday’s game and did not practice Monday. That will mean plenty more time for Dylan Brooks, Patrick Joyner Jr. and Davion Westmoreland, who are all fairly unproven but have shown flashes in limited action.

The defensive tackles haven’t been quite as flashy but have generally done well clogging up rushing lanes, led by Colorado State transfer Devin Phillips. That said, Texas and UCF, with dramatically different personnel and offensiveline play, both managed to run on the Jayhawks, which doesn’t bode well given the talented running backs they have left to play on the conference schedule.

Linebackers

The biggest revelation of this group has been that it is even deeper than imagined. KU knew it had a skilled top four with Rich Miller in the middle, Taiwan Berryhill Jr. on the weak side and Craig Young as the Hawk, plus JB Brown as the first man off the bench. Brown got plenty of shine with Berryhill hurt, coming off the edge as a pass rusher against Illinois, forcing a fumble at Nevada, then tallying nine tackles at Texas.

blocked two punts this season, one for a safety, and forced a fumble.

Top first-year transfer Houston dual-threat quarterback Donovan Smith is no stranger in the Big 12 after accounting for 29 touchdowns in 23 games the past two seasons at Texas Tech. In his first season for the Cougars, Smith is second in the Big 12 behind Gabriel with 302 total yards per game.

Most surprising team West Virginia (4-1, 2-0) is the only team other than Oklahoma without a Big 12 loss. While that includes only two conference games, the Mountaineers have a four-game winning streak since a 38-15 loss at sixth-ranked Penn State to open the season.

Most surprising player

Like his quarterback, Houston sophomore

receiver Samuel Brown began his college career at another Big 12 school.

The West Virginia transfer’s 34 catches match Texas’ Xavier Worthy for the most in the league, even though the Cougars have played one fewer game. Brown is the Big 12 leader with 6.8 catches and 103.6 yards receiving per game.

Most disappointing team TCU was the national

Berryhill had a breakout game of his own Saturday with eight tackles and a sack against UCF.

But the Jayhawks have to be encouraged by the progress of players like backup linebacker Cornell Wheeler, who’s stacked one good performance atop another, highlighted by his interception against Texas. Jayson Gilliom, a converted safety who missed all of last season due to injury, also made an impression this past Saturday when he tracked down UCF quarterback Timmy McClain on the sideline for a big loss. Defensive coordinator Brian Borland showed the team Gilliom’s reps on blitzes in practice and in the game as a shining example.

There’s still some work to do for this group to tighten up in coverage, as BYU tight end Isaac Rex exposed some weaknesses in that area (not to mention the two wide-open touchdowns for UCF tight ends on Saturday). And the linebackers were responsible for many of the missed tackles against Texas, though that seemed a bit of an aberration.

Cornerbacks

Cobee Bryant was at one point Pro Football Focus’ top-rated run defender in the country, produced KU’s most exciting play of the season when he leveled BYU’s Parker Kingston for a game-opening fumble return touchdown and has generally locked down opposing receivers. The rest of the unit has been more boom-or-bust.

runner-up last season, making the four-team College Football Playoff after an undefeated regular season in coach

Sonny Dykes’ first year.

The Frogs (3-3, 1-2) opened this season with a home loss to Colorado, then had a three-game winning streak before losing their last two games. And now quarterback Chandler Morris is injured.

Hottest seat West Virginia coach Neal Brown likely has to keep the momentum going. He is 26-26 overall in his fifth season. The Mountaineers play Thursday night at league newcomer Houston (2-3, 0-2) and Dana Holgorsen, the coach Brown replaced at West Virginia.

Biggest injury Kansas junior quarterback Jalon Daniels was the preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year, but has played in only three of six games for the No. 23 Jayhawks (5-1) because of back issues. He was also hurt last year, when Kansas was off to a 5-0 start and got in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2009 before he missed four games with a shoulder injury. The Jayhawks face Oklahoma State this week before a bye and a home date against the Sooners.

Opposite corner Mello Dotson is tied for second in the Big 12 with eight pass breakups and made a memorable interception off a big hit against Illinois, but he also has gotten beaten deep now and then.

Kalon Gervin and Kwinton Lassiter are the only other corners to record a stat this season because LSU transfer Damarius McGhee has been out since the Missouri State game. Leipold said earlier in the year he was dealing with a back injury.

Safeties

Kenny Logan Jr. is not only the Jayhawks’ leading tackler with 38 stops, he has found himself ideally positioned for a number of pivotal plays at the moments KU has needed them most. He blew up a reverse on fourth down at Nevada to seal that tough road win. He snatched up an interception on a ball batted up by Gilliom that turned into a pick-six and reversed the momentum against BYU. He even nearly had a special-teams touchdown Saturday against UCF.

Marvin Grant and OJ Burroughs are listed as co-starters at the other safety spot, with Grant the nominal starter for the first six times in his KU career, but both have seen lots of time. Of course it was partly because Texas’ running backs were in the secondary so often, but Burroughs recorded a career-high 13 tackles in Austin.

Specialists

Trevor Wilson returned a punt for a touchdown against UCF, the first such score for the Jayhawks in nine years and by far the most momentous accomplishment of KU’s special teams this season. (It earned him Big 12 special teams player of the week honors.) Other than that, the KU specialists have been steady if unremarkable, which is certainly an improvement over last season. Seth Keller made his first seven kicks of the year before missing a chip shot late against UCF. Damon Greaves really hasn’t had to punt much at all since coming over from Australia but averaged more than 45 yards on six kicks at Texas.

IARP

a suggestion that a third former KU player, Cheick Diallo, may have received illicit payments even earlier in the 2010s, but it’s not clear to what extent that could factor into the IARP’s ruling.

Some of the charges implicate head coach Bill Self and assistant coach Kurtis Townsend. KU gave Self a lifetime contract in 2021 but later imposed four-game suspensions on Self and Townsend, as well as recruiting restrictions, ahead of the 2022-23 season. The IARP, which considers “mitigating factors” in rendering its decisions, has taken self-imposed penalties into account in several of its rulings.

KU’s is the last case the IARP will rule on before it is disbanded. The NCAA referred KU’s case to the IARP in July 2020.

SI reported that KU had its IARP hearing in April. However, the body has taken six months since as opposed to turning around a result on its usual four-month timeline.

Ultimately, the case stems from the late-2017 arrests that kickstarted the federal inquiry into corruption into college basketball.

FSHS’ Randall commits to South Dakota State Free State senior golfer Jack Randall on Tuesday verbally committed via social media to continue playing golf at South Dakota State University. Randall, the JournalWorld All-Area Player of the Year last spring, has earned all-Sunflower League honors and has

been an individual regional champion and regional runner-up during his three-year high school career. He helped lead FSHS to the state tournament in 2021 and 2022, tying for eighth individually as a freshman. In 2023, Randall was the lone state qualifier for the Firebirds, shooting 78-71149 at Sand Creek Station GC in Newton. This summer, Randall posted a stroke average of 72.30 in junior competitions, including a thirdplace finish at the Kansas

City Junior Championship in June. Since August, Randall maintains a 70.5 stroke average in competitive events.

Lawrence soccer drops late-season road game at Olathe Northwest

The Lawrence High boys soccer team dropped its road match at Olathe Northwest 4-2 on Tuesday night. After giving up a one-goal lead by halftime, the Chesty Lions (7-5-0) kept within a goal of the Ravens thanks to a goal by junior Asher

Sikes assisted by senior Colin Sandefur in the second half, but they ran out of steam late.

Over at Olathe South, Free State picked up a 4-1 road win over the Falcons. The Firebirds were led by junior Jonathan Zheng and senior Cameron Stutler, who scored two goals each. Zheng (2) and junior Nicholas Sprecker (1) also landed in the assist column.

FSHS meets LHS in the soccer City Showdown on Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at FSHS.
