LMH Health Cancer Center expansion and renovation update LMH Health will soon begin expanding and renovating the Cancer Center. Major efforts are expected to launch in February 2024 as design and construction teams work to create an environment that cultivates healing and focuses on a patient-first experience. The Cancer Center renovations are planned to be finished in 2025. The research and planning for the design of the new Cancer Center was a collaborative process among doctors, staff and architects. Earlier this year, the center selected a remodel team which consisted of physicians, a nurse navigator, treatment nurses, front office staff and the pharmacy manager. This team worked alongside architects to create a plan for the clinic that would best satisfy the needs of patients and visitors while making the center more efficient for staff. The team focused on creating a design for a healing environment that aims to improve patients’ overall sense of well-being and hopefulness. A healing environment can accelerate recovery, reduce stress and anxiety, shorten hospitalizations, reduce medication use and lessen pain.

“It is important for all aspects of the clinic to be represented in the decision-making process,” said Jodie Barr, DO, an LMH Health Cancer Center physician and member of the remodel team. “We molded everyone’s ideas together to create a functional, efficient clinic.” The team visited other cancer centers and researched which features would be the most beneficial. They brought their ideas to the architects who understood the vision and enhanced it further. The architects had them think from patient perspectives through interactive activities to ensure the easiest patient experience possible. —continued inside

Recognition like this one serves as a reminder of how equity is necessary in everything we do at LMH Health — from translation services to the yearly Summer Leadership Academy you will read about in this issue — that speaks to our purpose to be a partner for lifelong health.

This honor is also due in large part to you — our donors and community members. Your generous contributions and support help us elevate healthcare for all people in Douglas County and beyond. As I reflect on the award, I am reminded of the words of founder Elizabeth Watkins, “no person shall be excluded on account of race, or physical, social or financial condition.” We are confident in our future because of your role in it. We could not do this work without you — and with your continued support, our non-profit, safety net hospital will continue to be one of the very best for years to come. In gratitude,

Cancer Center expansion and renovation update Continued from front page “The architects brought in sample materials for us to feel and walked us through the hallway as if we were patients,” said Dr. Barr. “A lot of thought went into patient flow to ensure the patient experience is as easy as possible.” With the new design, there will be considerably more space in patient rooms and hallways. This will allow for a seamless experience for both staff and patients at the Cancer Center. The new design will allow room for new technology and different services to be added such as a full-time dietitian and comprehensive survivorship care. As the population of cancer survivors continues to rise, there is an increased need to provide cancer survivorship care. The LMH Health Cancer Center team partnered with the Masonic Cancer Alliance at the University of Kansas Cancer Center and created a comprehensive survivorship care plan to give to patients at their first appointment after treatment has ended. The survivorship team also provides a detailed care plan, outlining everything a survivor needs to do moving forward. The survivorship team continues to meet with survivors through the weeks, months and years after treatment to help make sure the survivors stay on track in all aspects of their health. Patients don’t have to travel far from home to receive exceptional cancer care. The LMH Health Cancer Center is an accredited, multidisciplinary cancer treatment center committed to providing patients care in a comfortable, healing environment. In order to ensure the space fully reflects the quality of the care provided therein, the Cancer Center will undergo a variety of aesthetic changes and additions including: • Family lounge • Healing garden • More natural light • Waiting room expansion • Computer screens in each patient/consult room • Open atmosphere for seamless patient experience

“We want to give patients the most comfortable environment to heal in during difficult times,” said Jill Jordan, practice manager for the Cancer Center. “For some, that means a shorter walk to their room or more natural light during treatment. There are a variety of things that can help patients heal faster and with the new design, we will have something from which every patient can benefit.” The project will cost approximately $11.5 million. The LMH Health Foundation is grateful to have received more than $6.5 million in philanthropic support from community members and foundations and continues to accept donations. “The Cancer Center has the physicians, programs and technology to provide healthcare that’s not only exceptional for a community hospital — it’s among the best anywhere,” said Rebecca Smith, LMH Health vice president of strategic communication and LMH Health Foundation executive director. “This expansion will ensure our facilities reflect the extraordinarily high level of care provided here.” Jordan said the community’s commitment to LMH Health is clear. “We are committed to the local community and through the donations, we can see how committed the community is to us,” Jordan said. “We would not have been able to make many of these changes without community support.”

2023 Summer Leadership Academy

For the fifth year, LMH Health welcomed local high school students to participate in the Summer Leadership Academy. The Academy gives students with an interest in healthcare a jump start on careers in healthcare administration, medicine and allied health. In collaboration with Lawrence Public Schools and the LMH Health Foundation, the LMH Health Summer Leadership Academy is a paid eight-week program that provides opportunities to students from all backgrounds. This one-of-a-kind experience allows students to learn through mentorship and hands-on training while establishing a relationship with the local community. Erica Hill, director of health equity, inclusion and diversity at LMH Health, and director of finance and strategic initiatives at the LMH Health Foundation, led the development and implementation of the Academy and oversees the program each year with support from Nicole Olson, LMH Health Foundation assistant. The program offers students an opportunity to explore what healthcare has to offer in a nurturing and supportive environment. At the conclusion of the Academy, each student receives a $1,000 scholarship to invest in their post-secondary success.

Seven participants were selected for this year’s Summer Leadership Academy: • Alex Brinker, junior, Lawrence High School • Autumn Beach, senior, College and Career Center • Brandon Sikes, senior, Free State High School • Jaelizza Garcia, senior, Free State High School • Maxx Krause, senior, College and Career Center • Naomi Porter, junior, Free State High School • Steven Duan, senior, Free State High School

Great team, great results for knee replacement For more than 45 years, Scot Hoffman has been in love with running. One of his favorite things to do is to get up in the morning and run as far as he can. However, all of the training miles that Hoffman put in — up to 40 or 50 a week — wore on his knees and “beat them to a pulp,” so it wasn’t a surprise when the pain began. He’d put up with the pain for several years before turning to orthopedic surgeon Adam Goodyear, MD, and the team at OrthoKansas for help. “Scot was having a lot of pain and had a lack of mobility,” Dr. Goodyear explained. “It was clearly affecting his activities of daily living and his quality of life.” Dr. Goodyear used the MAKO robotic arm to perform Hoffman’s total knee replacement. The MAKO has been proven to facilitate a shorter hospital stay, typically less pain and quicker return to function. The surgery went smoothly and Hoffman was discharged from the hospital later that same day. He was amazed by the experience. “Everyone had told me the horrors of knee surgery and I’d continued to put it off because I was afraid of the recovery time,” he explained. “I went in, got it done, woke up in recovery and never looked back.” A few short weeks after completing physical therapy for the first knee, it was time for Hoffman to have his other knee replaced. He checked in at the Lawrence Surgery Center, located at the LMH Health West Campus, for the operation. “The West Campus was superb and I got great care there,” Hoffman said. “I had a great experience and went home the same day. There was a little more pain but it wasn’t anything that bothered me or kept me up at night. Dr. Goodyear had told me that no two knee replacements are the same.”

Patients turn to the team at LMH Health OrthoKansas for expert care that’s not only exceptional for a community hospital — it’s among the best anywhere. The clinicians and staff provide convenient, collaborative and innovative care all under one roof, providing the ability to get treatment close to where patients work, live and play. “Every time I came out of physical therapy, I walked a little faster, a little straighter. I’ve been able to do things I hadn’t been able to for 15 years,” Hoffman said. “The quality of service, from the nurses to the anesthesiologists and doctor, I didn’t have one complaint. I’m so fortunate to have the team at OrthoKansas by my side.”

YOUR GIFTS AT WORK

Improved biopsy methods with the purchase of an additional colposcope make it easier and faster to determine if a patient has cervical cancer.

Ongoing support for an oncology nurse navigator helps patients through care with expertise and compassion.

Art and health have once again united on the LMH Health Main and West Campuses with the return of the Healing Arts Collaborative gallery exhibitions in August. The Healing Arts program, made possible through a collaboration between LMH Health and the Lawrence Arts Center, emphasizes healing, wellness and increased engagement among patients, families, staff and community by placing art throughout LMH Health facilities. The artwork gives patrons the opportunity to imagine, meditate and escape from the reality of being in a hospital. The program’s continuation is made possible by a grant to the LMH Health Foundation from the Kansas Creative Arts Commission. The grant allowed organizations to restart the project at no cost to the health system. “I am very excited to have art hanging in the hospital again,” said Allison Koonce, LMH Health community outreach and engagement supervisor. Koonce wrote the successful grant on behalf of the LMH Health Foundation. “It will brighten many days at LMH Health and be beneficial for just about everyone.” The Lawrence Arts Center will select and work with local artists to cultivate artwork for the exhibitions, which will rotate four times each year. The team will display artwork that engages, calms and provides an opportunity to learn or explore. LMH Health will identify and provide spaces most visible to the public to install local artists’ work. Currently, patients and visitors can view the artwork on display at the LMH Health Main campus located just outside the gold elevators on the first floor and at the LMH Health West campus on the second floor in the café.

Donors like you make great things happen at LMH Health. Recently, your gifts have helped make these possible:

Purchase of a blood analyzer allows for more automation and less manual pipetting by staff, improving efficiency and enhancing patient safety.

Comfort carts provide food and refreshments for families of patients in need of palliative care.

Transportation for senior patients now is available from the Senior Resource Center for Douglas County to LMH Health.

Low-intervention birthing suite provides new option for expecting mothers

Pregnant mothers seeking a low-intervention birth experience have more options than ever before. Those who want to deliver their babies without medication in the safety of a hospital setting have another option available — the low-intervention birthing suite at LMH Health. “We recognized a need in the community,” said Lara Rivera, a certified nurse midwife with Lawrence OB-GYN Specialists. “This suite gives women the opportunity to have the low-intervention birth experience they want with the safety net of a hospital in the background.” The low-intervention suite offers a comfortable setting for labor and birth. The suite is larger than the other rooms, providing more room to move around and ample space for a birthing chair, which encourages upright positioning and mobility during labor. Like all of the birthing suites at LMH Health, a Jacuzzi® tub provides comfort to patients who are laboring. LMH Health is able to provide the birthing suite thanks to the support and generosity of donors to the LMH Health Foundation. Donor funds supported the purchase of new linens, a refrigerator, lighting and other necessities to make the suite feel more like home than a hospital room.

Having the birth experience that you want is important. Whether you choose continuous fetal monitoring and an epidural or follow a more natural path, the team at LMH Health is committed to helping you achieve the birth experience you desire. Maintaining a sense of control was important for Kelsey Kayser. That’s one of the reasons she opted to have low-intervention births at LMH Health. “I wanted to feel in control as much as I could and feel what was going on with my body,” she explained. “I felt like having an epidural would put me in a position that would increase my risk of having more intervention, even leading to a C-section if I couldn’t feel how I was pushing.” “We have the best of both worlds at the hospital. We’re able to provide low-intervention care and also provide that emergency care, if needed,” explained Cindy Weidl, director of maternal child services at LMH Health. “When there are problems with a home birth, there can be critical time lost getting to the hospital but if you’re here, those go more smoothly and faster, making it safer for both baby and mom.”
