EMPOWERING MUSICIANS for the 21st century

Our students experience both a worldclass conservatory of music and a leading college of liberal arts and sciences. Together, Lawrence University offers the ideal learning environment for today’s aspiring musicians.

I T S TA RT S W I T H A M I N D S E T:

Music and the liberal arts are a powerful combination.

World-class musicians should also be world-class thinkers.

Today’s musicians need to be cutting-edge musicians.

Passion and profession can coexist.

Musicians need to be smart, agile, innovative, collaborative, and entrepreneurial— inside and outside the world of music.

The 21st century needs 21st-century musicians.

CORE MUSICIANSHIP Building core musicianship is at the heart of everything we do. At Lawrence, private lessons, ensembles, music theory, musicology, and keyboard skills are combined with rigorous training, intellectual discipline, and creative artistry. These courses will push a music student to perform exceptionally, think analytically, read critically, speak convincingly, write clearly, and create passionately. From the classroom to the rehearsal room, our faculty are dedicated to helping you reach your full potential as a musician, scholar, and human being. They will encourage, push, and empower you to reach beyond what you might even expect of yourself.

C R E AT I V E I M P U L S E We integrate improvisation, composition, non-western music, and deep listening throughout our Conservatory curriculum to help you become a creative, flexible, collaborative, and adaptable musician.

PERFORMANCE REIMAGINED

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is critical to the Lawrence Conservatory experience. To reach your full musical potential, you must also expand intellectually to nurture the creative, multidisciplinary, and flexible mindset you’ll need to succeed here and in your life after Lawrence.

If we want today’s audiences to deeply engage with music, we have to redefine the rules and be willing to step outside the confines of tradition. The Lawrence Conservatory’s innovative culture is to re-think every aspect of performance, from venue to presentation, to create the most compelling live performances that we can.

ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET To own your musical life and stand out from the crowd, you will need to be innovative, passionate, original, collaborative, and fearless. We’ll help you hone this mindset through coursework that combines groundbreaking creativity with high-level business acumen and expansive internship opportunities.

RECORDING AND P R O D U C T I O N A RT S Recording and production know-how are critical skills for today’s musicians, no matter what kind of music you’re making. Hands-on coursework, multiple recording studios, and support for student recording projects provide every Lawrence musician with opportunities to take their musicianship to the next level.

M U LT I - M U S I C A L I T Y Expand your musical vocabulary with offerings in jazz, songwriting, contemporary music styles, and a full array of world music ensembles, including Balinese gamelan, Ghanaian drumming and dancing, Cuban drumming and singing, Brazilian Samba, and Mariachi. Speaking multiple musical languages will prepare you for today’s world of music, where versatility, collaboration, and cultural awareness are highly valued skills.

SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT At Lawrence, we are always asking how our music-making can be a catalyst for positive change in our community. Through innovative community outreach programs, unique ensemble tours, and strong institutional commitment to making positive change through the arts, our Conservatory students learn how to be forces for good here in Appleton and throughout the world.

EVEN THOUGH A LIST OF EMPLOYERS GIVES A SENSE OF WHERE OUR GRADUATES WORK, IT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER THE AWESOME FREELANCE AND ENTREPRENEURIAL OPPORTUNITIES LAWRENTIANS HAVE CREATED FOR THEMSELVES.” Brian Pertl ’85, Dean of the Conservatory of Music
