Brooklyn Rider Friday, October 4, 2019, 8 p.m. Hailed as “the future of chamber music” (Strings), Brooklyn Rider offers eclectic repertoire in gripping performances that continue to attract legions of fans and draw rave reviews from classical, world, and rock critics alike. For this performance Brooklyn Rider will perform their new project Healing Modes. The healing properties of music have been recognized from ancient Greek civilization to the field of modern neuroscience and expressed in countless global traditions. The slow movement of Beethoven’s Opus 132, a ‘Song of Holy Thanksgiving From a Convalescent to the Deity in the Lydian mode,’ is among the most profound expressions of healing in the string quartet repertoire. This autumnal masterwork is presented in its entirety alongside five compact new commissions which explore the subject of healing from a wide range of historical and cultural perspectives. Composers include Reena Esmail, Gabriela Lena Frank, Matana Roberts and recent Pulitzer Prize winners Caroline Shaw and Du Yun.

Tine Thing Helseth, trumpet Friday, February 28, 2020, 8 p.m. Norwegian trumpet virtuoso Tine Thing Helseth is as much at ease playing Bach or Haydn as she is with works well beyond the instrument’s comfort zone, including arrangements of songs by Puccini or the Beach Boys and marches by Fritz Kreisler and tangos by Piazzolla. Praised for her “astonishingly outstanding intonation” by Gramophone magazine, Helseth’s intensity and enthusiasm have earned her the kind of rock star status most classical soloists dream of. Following her 2013 BBC Proms debut performance of Matthias Pintscher’s Chute d’étoiles with the BBC Scottish Symphony, Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth has rapidly established herself as one of the foremost trumpet soloists of our time, garnering critical praise for her soulful, lyrical sound and collaborative approach to music-making.

Miguel Zenon Quartet Saturday, November 9, 2019, 7:30 p.m. Multiple Grammy Nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often-contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered as one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation, he has also developed a unique voice as a composer and as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Latin American Folkloric Music and Jazz. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenón has built a distinguished career as a leader, releasing eleven albums under his own name. In addition, he has crafted his artistic identity by dividing his time equally between working with older jazz masters and the music’s younger innovators—irrespective of styles and genres. The list of musicians Zenón has toured and/or recorded with includes: The SFJAZZ Collective, Charlie Haden, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, David Sánchez, Danilo Pérez, The Village Vanguard Orchestra, Guillermo Klein & Los Guachos, The Jeff Ballard Trio, Antonio Sánchez, David Gilmore, Paoli Mejías, Brian Lynch, Jason Lindner, Dan Tepfer, Miles Okazaki, Dan Weiss, Ray Barreto, Andy Montañez, Jerry Gonzalez & The Fort Apache Band, The Mingus Big Band, Bobby Hutcherson and Steve Coleman. 7

Tigran Hamasyan Trio Friday, May 1, 2020, 8 p.m. Pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan, potent jazz improvisation fuses with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. He’s one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists of his generation. A piano virtuoso with groove power, Tigran’s latest adventurous project is 2017’s An Ancient Observer, his second solo album, his eighth overall as a sole leader, and his sophomore recording for Nonesuch. (Overall, this is his eighth recording as a sole leader.) Conceptually, An Ancient Observer is a poignant album focusing on the art of observing. Tigran’s career has included an impressive number of accolades, including top piano award at the 2013 Montreux Jazz Festival and the grand prize at the prestigious 2006 Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition. One of his earliest albums, 2008’s New Era, was championed by one scribe who wrote that “with more seasoning and a calming maturity not driven by merely showing off, Hamasyan is certain to elevate his art to a top tier of jazz and world music expressionism.”
