PROJECT Project Overview The project is the derived interpretation from Italo Calvino’s Invisible City towards Govan. As part of my interpretation and imagination of Govan on the thematic group of City and Desire. I see Govan as a city of the past and crave for immediate gentrification and revitalisation. A forgotten town that was once strived for its ship building industry. The idea of proposing a Fun Fair/ Themed Park in Govan are based on trying to create instant population density, trigger economy growth and job opportunities around. A series of analysis and understanding the relevancy of the funfair to the Govan context were carried out to formulate a building typology that fits to the context of the masterplan development of the vision of embracing the culture and encourages economic and population growth of Govan.
MASTERPLAN DEVELOPMENT The Design Context The masterplan proposal addresses development at the central spine of Govan with ambition to reconnect the east and west side. The masterplan aims to progressively replace the existing sheds and decommisioned rail line that disconnectes both side. The graving dock falls under the development that strteches further to the west from the spine. the proposal manifest to redevelop the central spine and re-envision a new riverside skyline that echoes the vibrancy of the new development at the futher west, SEC Armadillo, BBC, etc.

DESIGN MANIFESTO Graving Dock Masterplan Development The design aim to develop Graving Dock as a central hub for leisure and entertainment that could become the new economy and social catalyst to Govan. The masterplan are set to deliver an attrative, accessible and active public domain which will promote further growth and increase the vibrancy of Govan as a place to live, work and visit. The idea of creating a distinct place and identity built on the instrinsic and historic qualities of the site. The dockyards will be key in design principles. The Central Hub comprising of the temporal nature typologies; fun-fair, drag racing grandstand, rave/music institution could act as the urban catalyst for social and economy.Such spaces could function to hold variety of events of different scale from a wedding ceremony to regional Govan Fair to even International Events. The local economy could benefit form these constant fairs and events held from the entertainment hub as it creates seasonal draw of population into Govan. The typology and design responds to the current situation in Govan where Govan are in desperate need for re-densification and new economy strategy after the deterioration of ship building industry.

PLANNING STRATEGY Planning Challenges and Design Strategies The context of Graving Docks draws a huge challenge in planning and design development. A masterplan development that covers of a large site, with a huge historical background that the Graving Dock was once the core for economy and social development of Govan. Apart from the historical context, Graving dock lies rather distant from the proposed “ Masterplan Spine”. The connection with the proposed masterplan “central spine” proved to be a challenge. The design strategies that was established during 4A “ To Care” design development. 1. Community reconsilation 2. “Event” nature building typologies 3. Forming a riverside promenade connecting to the “Masterplan Spine”

7. Establish node and urban edge.

TYPOLOGY ANALYSIS Local, Regional and Global A comparison of the relevancy of the typology to the site context on the basis of local, regional and Global scale. It was identified that the biggest problem in developing a Theme Park in the Graving dock are a challenge due to the size required, and often themed park isolates itself from the community and often are often sit further away from the City. Local - Glasgow Garden Festival 1988 Temporal Themed Park development that was held neighbouring the Graving Docks attracted nearly 4.3 million visitors over 152 days. Regional - M&D’s Scotland Theme Park Permenant amusement park that are located further from the city centre, sit within the suburbia of Bellshill. A single operator amusement park that isolates itself with the surrounding demotes the engagement of community . Global- Euro Disney, Paris Euro Disney attracts more that 49 million visitors in the year 2016. One of the major economy contributor to the economy of the city. Island development destructs the community and capitalistic movement.

THE THEME PARK ALTERNATIVE The design seek for the alternative to a typical theme park developmet as often theme parks were developed on a relatively large site, suburbian context and often single operator. Such development impose challenge to the context of Graving Dock with its historical legacy as core for social and economy drive. The design opted for a more community based typology and the travelling fairground fits perfectly within the context. Historically, Glasgow was regularly used as base for the fairground bussiness. The bussiness used to have a steady growth in demand for such entertainment in the past. Social skeptism and increased complexity in applying permit for such events are threatening its existance. This situation provides the oppurtunity for designing Fairground Hub at the Graving Dock as a central hub for leisure and entertainment that are operated by the community instead of global capitalistic operators.

DESIGN INTENTION A FUN COMPLEX
The design aims to challenge the idealogy of typical amusement park requiring large area of land for operation and often isolative to its surrounding.
Permeable Assesibility
The idea of introducing travelling fairground operators as alternative into a building as typology fufills the ambition of creating a space of amusement that could be the economic generator of Govan and a more community based solution than privately owned single operation. The solution also creates opportunities of fairs to be enjoyed on a permanent basis for the community rather than a temporal event. The design also aim to simplify the process of venue hire process for the travelling communities. Often proved that venue hiring within Glasgow city are becoming more complex and expensive.
Multi-ownership
The design also ambition to allow “Lots to be apply on individual basis. This allows the travellers flexibility for operation as they could apply to operate individually rather than in group.
MASSING PROCESS
The Site.
Moduled floor plates to accomodate program change.
Ramp for caravan vertical accessibility.
Platform Connection into dock.
Builiding form to accomodate program volume.
Fair rides inhibits the building.
Parameter service core provide maximum internal freedom.
Formation of edge to the plaza.
Canopy roofing.
THE FUN COMPLEX KITS OF PART The idea of kits of part modulor follies developed during 4A “To Care were carried forward and evolved as servicing cores spaning across the perimeter of the building, functioning as core for circulation and servicing components. Pre-fabricated structural frame, floor and roofs were designed to be easily assembled and dismantled to accomodate change space, events and fair rides. This allows larger fair rides to punch through from one floor to another.

TRANSPARENCY

4. Horizontally expressed clear polycarbonate tubes.
2. Corrugated plycarbonate sheetings.
5. Multitoned horizontally expresed clear polycarbonate tubes.
3. Vertically expressed polycarbonate tubes.
6. Double glazed : Polycarbonate sheets and mutitone tubes.
Material Justification Transparency are key in developing the faรงade for the building. Imagined the building as a large machine with fair rides mechanism and organic floor alteration as the moving parts within the building, exposed and expressed. With its transparency, fair rides are visible within the glazed barrier forming an opaque wall along Govan road. Visitors can witness glimpses of the vibrant interior operated by the fellow travellers within. Lights of the fair rides pulsating from within to the external forms the faรงade of the building. Thus, creating visual draw and excitement even before entering the complex. Simple clear curtain wall does not do justice to the building as fairground were never a symbol of supremacy but rustic and robust expression. The building could be better expressed with multi-toned polycarbonate sheets or even tubes spanning horizontally across the building to express the dynamic length of the complex.
