Community

In case you didn’t notice it’s crunch time... If you’re reading this, it must be December and you’re starting to feel that anxiousness some of us feel this time of year. Some of that may be a direct correlation of the age old habit of procrastination or the knowledge that this time of year is filled with a lot of activity related to or associated with Christmas. All of which means you’ve got a lot of stuff to do. Never fear, you can do it all right here in Shawnee and we want to help you out by offering a few suggestions to help you ease the stress that some experience this time of the year. We think you should begin this holiday season by taking a few minutes to visit your favorite beverage provider. As coincidence would have it, many of them just happened to be mentioned in this very magazine. Whether it is a cherry limeade or a specialty latte your looking for, we are pretty certain you can get what you need to keep your thirst quenched as you scurry about. If your focus happens to be on gift acquisition, consider the wide range of things you can purchase in our fair community. As I was glancing at just the ads in last month’s Shawnee Outlook, I noticed that I had so many choices, which made my list much easier. Need a gift for a sports fan or something for that special meal, or even a specialty gift? Check the ads and learn about some places that you might not have considered before. It might just surprise you what they have in stock. As I spent more time looking at what these advertisers offered, I thought about getting a gift for my significant other that might be out of the norm for an old codger like me. What about something from one of the stores that offers some pretty nice selection to ease her day like a spa package or getting her nails done or a opportunity to have that family portrait done, which I never seem to remember? I’m fairly certain a gift certificate to

6

have some new carpeting or flooring installed would also be a well-received gift. Or possibly some gifts tied to the culinary part of our lives would be appreciated as well, especially if they have a unique made right here in Shawnee connection. Speaking of that, if your are really inclined, you can actually find gifts that allow you to use your creativity and make your own handmade pottery piece, that will certainly become an heirloom for generations to come. In fact there are so many choices that makes it easy to find just what you are seeking from reducing our energy costs and consumption, figuring out our insurance needs, to getting fit at the gym. Certainly we shouldn’t overlook visiting one of the many health providers who will help us with our medical needs as well. We even noticed some of the advertisers were even offering things to make our animal best friends look their very best this holiday as well. And while we try to do it all, give everyone what they want, rush to get that pizza, yogurt or special gift, we simply cannot forget the entire reason for all of this, which is the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior. And wouldn’t you know it, I even found that in the magazine as well. Who knew, that they had it all? Peace and Goodwill to all and Merry Christmas Shawnee.

TURKEY SPAGHETTI? Happy Holidays! Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas is just around the corner. Dinner menus are once again being planned and will no doubt include another nicely Roasted Turkey. According to the National Turkey Federation Americans consumed 48 million Turkeys for Thanksgiving and will serve up another 22 million Birds for Christmas. I wonder how much is consumed in one sitting compared to the grazing that occurs over the following days? I love the Holiday dinners - but after Day 2 - I am definitely ready for something a little different. If you have a little Turkey meat leftover here is a great recipe that is easy to make, tastes great, and the kids will love it.

• 4 cups diced Turkey meat • 1 medium yellow onion • 1 medium bell pepper • 1 pound Velveeta cheese • 1 can original Rotel • 1 small can sliced mushrooms • 1 small can sliced black olives • 1 pound Spaghetti • 1 can cream of mushroom soup • Salt, Pepper, and Parmesan Cheese Cook 1 pound of Spaghetti, rinse well, drain and set aside. In a microwave proof bowl, combine the Velveeta cheese, Cream of Mushroom soup, and Rotel. Microwave on high for approx. 2 minutes mixing thoroughly halfway until the cheese is melted and ingredients are well blended. Chop the Onion and Bell Pepper and saute with butter until tender. In a 9 x 14 inch greased Casserole dish add the Spaghetti, Mushrooms, Onions, Bell Peppers, and Turkey. Mix lightly. Pour the Cheese sauce over the Spaghetti and mix lightly. Top with Black Olives and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Salt and Pepper to taste. Cover with foil and bake approximately 20 mins at 350 degrees or until it starts to bubble. Set on a cooling rack for 5 minutes, remove foil, serve, and enjoy! Being home for the Holidays is something we too often take for granted. Please keep all of our servicemen and women in your thoughts and prayers throughout this Holiday Ken Stafford is Season. Working Together, Sharing God’s Love

Beautiful Mess

by: Shea Moore I’m that girl. The straight A student who always got made fun of for being “too serious.â€? Type A. OCD. Overly formal and socially awkward. Well, look out, Shawnee, I’m letting my hair down! One pin at a time. Everyone has a story. Allow me to share mine with you. Here goes. I was young and naĂŻve, sure, but I was also in love. Over four years ago, I married my best friend, Rhea. Oh believe me, I know what you are thinking: “Rhea and Shea, how cute! It rhymes!â€? Yes, God does have a sense of humor. Six months later, we were signing the papers that made us official first-time homeowners, having no clue what we were getting ourselves into. Rhea had a great job as an airplane mechanic and we lived a “normalâ€? life for a couple of years. Then came a time when we were both looking for some change. I wanted a baby; he wanted the military. So, we compromised, of course! While on the rocky rollercoaster of trying to conceive, we researched different branches of the military. We decided the Guard was the best fit because it would pay for college and allow Rhea to keep his regular full-time job. In April 2009, Rhea enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard as a combat medic. See, he wanted to go infantry, but the fuddy-duddy in me begged him not to. Instead, he carries an extra twenty pounds. At the end of June, we got an absolute positive that I was pregnant and two weeks later, he shipped off to Army Basic Combat Training. The next several months were chaotic as my husband made his way through Basic and AIT (Advanced Individual Training) to become both a soldier and a medic, the ultrasound revealed a high-risk pregnancy, and the news was announced during Christmas exodus

White’s

that Rhea’s unit was set to deploy early 2011. Merry Christmas. After months of shots and three bouts of preterm labor, our son, Kendrick, was born full-term on February 26, 2010. My husband came home from AIT a week later. It was a bittersweet moment as daddy met son in the Passenger Pick-up/Drop-off section just outside the Oklahoma City airport. Come to think of it, that was better than meeting at the Baggage Claim. Over those eleven months between training and deployment, we semi-settled in to “one weekend a month, two weeks a yearâ€?—plus all the extra predeployment training and Rhea’s regular more-thanforty-hours-a-week job—and dove into the wonderful world of parenthood. We watched as our newborn grew into a toddler. Then a week before Kendrick’s first birthday, we said good-bye. Now I’m the temporarily single mom to a twenty-month-old. My life has become a whirlwind of tearful good-byes, joyful reunions, and the anxious waiting that takes place in between. This is not the life I planned. On the day we got married, I thought I would never be lonely again. Little did I know I would become a military wife with many a lonely night. I still wish for that white-picket-fence kind of life, but I’m learning to enjoy the ride. I’ve made new friends along the way, invaluable women who are on this ride with me, always there to lend an ear‌or hand me another glass of wine. Rhea and I have grown in ways we couldn’t have imagined, our marriage ultimately strengthened. And then there’s the pitter patter of ornery little feet, like music to my ears. I love this beautiful mess.

unny days in Oklahoma seem to be the key for bringing avid motorcyclists out in droves. However, for Shawnee’s Redeemed Riders, great weather isn’t the only reason they ride. Redeemed Riders is local chapter #768 of the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA). Every holiday season the Redeemed Riders rally with Helping Hearts Ministries of Harrah to benefit underprivileged children. Michael Talbott, of Redeemed Riders, explained, “As a CMA chapter, our main mission is to be there for bikers but it’s not our only mission. At Helping Hearts our desire is to help children have a wonderful Christmas,” said Talbott. For 21 years Helping Hearts has brought joy and hope to children and families during the Christmas season. Helen Rudek, volunteer and spokesperson for Helping Hearts shared the heart behind Helping Hearts, “Times are difficult right now and there’s

children in the community that don’t have anything. We don’t want them to go without at Christmas. With help from the Redeemed Riders, Faith Riders and other motorcycle groups, we’re able to use more of our funds to buy food for the families. The motorcyclists have been a godsend,” said Rudek. Since 2002, Redeemed Riders have helped organize the Helping Hearts Toy Run that raises money, provides toys and food for families in the Harrah community. Annually, the first Saturday of November, various events such as a live auction, Bike Show, Car Show, and a Marble Run bring motorcyclists and car enthusiasts from all over Oklahoma. Unwrapped toys or cash donations are the required entry fee into each event. Multiple items are donated to the auction with all the proceeds going to Helping Hearts. This year’s ‘big ticket item’ was a Harley Davidson quilt handmade by a Helping Hearts volunteer. It sold at auction for $315. www.shawneeoutlook.com

During a Marble Run, bikers ride to different checkpoints and draw one marble out of a bag containing different colored marbles. Each marble’s assigned value is placed on scorecards. At the end of the Run, the person with the highest score wins. Each marble represents a significant meaning to the Redeemed Riders. “As a Christian motorcycle group, we want to share the love of Jesus with everyone. Before we announce the winner, we tell everyone the meaning of the marbles; Black for sin, red for the blood of Christ, white for cleansing from sin, green for growing in spiritual life with Christ and yellow for heavens’ streets of gold, said Talbott. This year’s winner received the $100 cash prize donated by the Banc 1st of Harrah. The spirit of Christmas is paramount in the Harrah community demonstrated by the various ways they’ve helped local children have a memorable Christmas. “We’ve

had Sunday school classes and different grades at the schools that decided on their own they were going to collect canned goods for this. The Harrah post office has been gracious to have their mail carriers pick up nonperishable food items that residents placed by their mailbox. Several

We also give each child a pair of mittens or gloves, said Rudek. In keeping with Christmas tradition, stockings filled with candy, small toys, books and movies are given to each child under 12 years old. “We have over 400 children on our list for this Christmas, said Rudek. “Pulling all of this together is worth it when you see the difference you’re making. We’ve had parents hug us and tell us they wouldn’t have had a Christmas without us. We’re so thankful to the Redeemed Riders, the Faith Riders and all the Christian bikers who help make this possible. They’ll never know how much we appreciate them. According to Talbott, “This is what CMA is here for. There’s nothing else like it when you know you’re helping someone. It seems the greatest reward is for those fortunate enough to look into grateful eyes and hear heartfelt thanks for the efforts from a community who loves people.

“The parents may choose two toys as well as clothing for each child. We also give each child a pair of mittens or gloves, businesses have donated money and food to help us give to those with the greatest need this time of year, said Rudek. Families experiencing financial hardships within the Harrah school district are confidentially referred to Helping Hearts. A Christmas store is set-up in a host church and invitations are sent to families to come ‘shopping’, at a scheduled time in early December. “The parents may choose two toys as well as clothing for each child.

att and Amber Howard couldn’t believe it. Matt had finished his time in the military, Amber graduated from St. Greg’s University with a communications degree and to their amazement, they were pregnant after trying for seven long years. Taken by surprise at three months along, they happily prepared for the due date, a baby for the holidays. The last few weeks she was on bed rest and everything seemed fine but just two days before the due date, her final check up quickly became a nightmare. “I was having a hard time breathing. Since I had asthma when I was a kid, I didn’t think anything was wrong. I knew how to calm down my breathing but from the hospital parking lot to the doctor’s office, I could barely breathe,” said Amber. Dr. Alsap sent Amber and Matt to labor and delivery at Unity Health where they surmised she had Preeclampsia, a deadly condition that can kill both the baby and the mother. Nurse Jacklyn Cantrell and Charge Nurse, Hope Whitney, were immediately concerned. In respiratory distress, her oxygen levels were low and her blood pressure was rising; but,

it was worse than that. “I started trying to find the baby’s heart beat. Normally if I have a hard time finding it, it’s because the baby’s moving but I couldn’t feel any movement,” said Cantrell. “I picked up only her heartbeat, which sounds different than a fetal heartbeat. I was so concerned, I sent for Dr. Jennings.” On call at the time, Dr. Jennings assessed the situation carefully. “When we put an ultrasound on the mother usually anyone can spot the heart rate because it’s the only thing moving. The baby may move a little bit but the heart just sits there and pumps so it’s easy to spot. It was obvious I couldn’t find a moving organ like that. I found the chest cavity and the chambers of the heart but it was still.” Baby Colin Howard was gone. Amber’s grief gripped everyone in the room. “She kept saying, ‘I knew I wasn’t meant to have a baby,’ and she told her husband, ‘I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I can’t have a baby,’” Nurse Whitney remembered. “Most of the time I can remove myself until after we’ve cared for the mom but I had to leave the room.” Dr. Jennings said, “It’s a sinking feeling and something you never get calloused to. It was devastating.”

After calling in the family with the news, Matt texted his mother, Nancy Althof, returning from Texas. “He said, ‘we lost him,’ and I immediately started a prayer chain like you wouldn’t believe.” Unity Chaplain Larry Sparks prayed with the family as the medical team turned their attention to a mother far too unstable to deliver. “The safest thing for the mother in most cases is to deliver and the mother recovers in a few hours. We didn’t have a few hours, she was too critical. Her blood pressure was at stroke level and a c-section delivery was the fastest way to take the stress off of her body,” said Dr. Jennings. As quickly as possible, within thirty to forty-five minutes, the surgery was underway. “Immediately after we delivered the baby, I saw him spit fluid out of his mouth and thought, ‘did anybody else see that?’ Then there was no more movement and I though it was a reflex of some sort,” said Dr. Jennings. He ordered the baby’s vitals be checked

continued from pg. 17

and the room stood still. “I put my fingers on the cord, said Nurse Whitney, “and it was a pulse, a good pulse at 120-130 and it was real regular. Dr. Jennings and his team erupted in tearful hope. “I screamed, ‘WE HAVE A PULSE, WE HAVE A PULSE!’ said Whitney. “We all started crying and shouting, ‘COME ON BABY, COME ON!’ He came around quickly and we took him to the nursery. In the waiting room, Rev. Sparks and the family were asking God for a miracle when Dr. Jennings, who had less than an hour before delivered horrifying news, announced to the family that they had their son back. “I was still so emotional, said Matt. “I was upset about the baby but worried about her. When he came in, I couldn’t believe it but I hugged him. As they wheeled Amber out to ICU, the family stopped them and told her Colin was alive. Amber, still anesthetized, remembered something she heard. “Someone said, ‘she’s going to flip out when she finds out he’s alive,’ I think I started fighting at that point. And fight she did. After a rapid six hour recovery,

she was holding her baby. “I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t believe it until I saw him. It was obvious to everyone that heaven had touched earth that day. “From a logical standpoint I told myself that I must have missed the heart rate, said Dr. Jennings. “But there were other people in the room who saw the same thing. If the heart rate had been low enough that it wasn’t easily visible on an ultrasound, it was a good thirty minutes before we could get her ready for the c-section and the baby would have passed away in the meantime. I believe in miracles and I’ve had some close shaves but never anything like this. Weighing in at 5 pounds, 5 ounces Colin is completely healthy. “It was the best and worst day of our lives. We have a lot to be thankful for, said Amber. “It makes you wonder what God has in store for him. How rare it is that the tragic and miraculous, that utter despair and overwhelming joy should light upon humanity in a single hour. Stories such as these inspire wonder, hope, and faith in the unseen reality of heaven. One thing is certain: the Howard family will enjoy an unforgettable ‘baby’s first Christmas’ this year.

Mabee-Gerrer Museum Exhibit

The Nativity by: Tina Julich

“Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel.” Matthew 1:23 In our lives today we are accustomed to having almost-instant access to entertainment and information and can hardly imagine a life without it; news and what we consider important events are shared and forgotten in the blink of an eye. Contrast this to a time when news and stories were spread largely by word of mouth, and limited by the storyteller. Much of the art from those times was created to tell the narrative of history as artists condensed the information down into a work that would tell the viewer a story. One of the most popular and recurring stories shown in art has been that of the Nativity, the birth of Christ. The Nativity can include artworks depicting the Annunciation, where Archangel Gabriel tells Mary she is going to bear a child, to the birth of Jesus, to Mary, Joseph and Jesus fleeing into Egypt. Throughout history, the nativity story has been a popular theme in art perhaps because it shows the human side of Christ’s birth and God’s promise to send His Son to earth. The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is

showcasing an exhibit of original etchings, engravings, and woodcuts depicting the Nativity this holiday season. Over 30 artworks by 18 different artists will be on display from December 9th through January 22, 2012. All aspects of the nativity are seen in this exhibit. To make a print, the artist cuts a design into a plate made of wood, metal, or another material. The plate is then inked and paper pressed against the plate by hand or by a press. When the paper is pulled away from the plate, the image created by the artist is revealed. These woodcuts and engravings are collectively known as etchings, as well as the print that has been created from them. The etchings in this collection are primarily from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with the oldest one dating back to 1495 by Albrecht Dürer. Other artworks included in the collection are by Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, and Annibale Carracci, while some of the artworks are unsigned. Albrecht Dürer is considered the master of 16th century German graphic arts. He is known for his architectural drawings, and his beautifully detailed engravings. Rembrant, while well known as a great painter,

was also a master at etching, and is perhaps one of the greatest printmakers of the seventeenth century. Other artists such as Reubens and Carracci are better known for their paintings so this exhibit gives us a glimpse at another side of these artists. This collection of etchings is on loan to the museum by Emile Mathis of the Mathis Gallery & Conservation Framing of Racine, Wisconsin. “This is a great exhibit to show family and friends,” says Delaynna Trim, Curator of Collections at the museum. “All other exhibits will be open as well. The museum is open every day except Christmas Eve and Day, New Year’s Eve and Day; and is also closed Mondays,” she added. So, take a break from the modern day world and step back to a time when art was created to tell a story of long ago, a story of the Nativity. It is a wonderful way to spend a few quite moments of time contemplating the true meaning of Christmas.

Quilting on the rise

by: Mindy Wood

Home spun from the heart, pioneer women from dusty by gone days made quilts and sewed just about piece of clothing for their families. Pictures of women in rocking chairs, draped with fabric and needle in hand by a hearth remind us of simpler times but you might be surprised that the modern woman is making time for this art once again. Despite the economic slow down, quilting has increased by 9% since 2006 according to a study by Quilts Inc. Google’s search insights show that quilting blogs have increased in popularity by 5000%, with internet searches for quilting gifts up by 70% and quilting services up by 90%. That’s quite a jump in interest but it comes as no surprise to Caryl Hennen, owner of Blue Cabbage Quilting Studio in Tecumseh. “I taught my girls to sew when they were little but they didn’t show much interest until they got to college. They’re into organic, doing things in a conservative fashion like recycling. I think young people around the high school and college age are into quilting but also crocheting and knitting are really making a big come back as well. Shawnee’s Spinning Spools Quilt Guild is also seeing renewed interest, whose club ranges in age from thirteen to thirties who work alongside senior quilters with decades of experience. “They help bring a fresh perspective so you don’t get stuck in a rut, said President, Laurie Meyers. “A lot of the newer ones our younger quilters are doing are bright, fresh, and they make you feel

good. They have a lot of respect for the older ones and they don’t hesitate to ask for help. The older women are happy to help them and they’re not condescending. They share a common bond and it almost closes the age gap. Why so much interest now? “It seems like in our fast paced world, people are missing the human connection, said Meyers. “You can spend as much as you want and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Most people have sewing machines but you can sew the pieces by hand. Hennen agreed. “People are finding out it’s an affordable hobby. You don’t need a top of the line sewing machine and technology has also made it less time consuming for the work that’s maybe not so fun like cutting out all the pieces. Quilting seems to be an obsession, maybe even a culture of it’s own. “It’s an obsession that goes with an obsession for fabric, laughed Meyers. “You hear them talking about their stash. I work at Hancocks and they come in and buy fabric and tell me, ‘oh it’s just for my stash. Someday I’ll use it but not today.’ For Hennen, it’s about relaxation and creative satisfaction. “I think it’s just fun. For me it’s always been relaxing because you have to focus just enough to take your mind off of everyday things but not so focused that you get a headache. For most people it’s getting the project done. It’s kind of your own idea because you’re picking the patterns, the colors and you’re not sure what it’s going to turn out to look like. That’s part of the

excitement to see the end product to see if it’s better than the original or how different it is.â€? Quilting has also broadened to include table runners, table cloths, purses, wall dĂŠcor, tree skirts, and more. “They’re not just quilts for beds anymore,â€? said Meyers. “If you’re a quilter, you can probably find a way to quilt anything just because you like to do it. You can do anything you want and it’s really not that hard. There aren’t that many rules.â€? Meyers said quilting is often a connection to the past. “A woman who lost her daughter when she was a teenager came in and wanted to make a quilt out of her daughter’s clothes. It had been fifteen years and she’d finally gone through her clothing. People have made quilts out of their grandfather’s plaid shirts. I’m saving my granddaughter’s shirts and will give them a quilt when they graduate. I can remember seeing a quilt my grandmother made and remember a dress she’d made for me or a shirt. It really connects you to the past.â€? Perhaps the best answer for this trend really does lie in the past. “It used to be more of a chore than it was recreational. They had to do it but it was something they enjoyed,â€? said Hennen. “You see that in the antique quilts. If they were just making the quilt for a bed, just for durability alone they wouldn’t be as beautiful as they were.â€? For more information, visit shawneequiltguild.com and bluecabbagequilting.com

Building Windmills. Building A Legacy. Windmills have dotted the rural American landscape since the 1800’s. While the latest innovative windmills seek to harness the power of the wind, traditional tower designs serve a simpler and sometimes nostalgic purpose. For one Shawnee businessman, maintaining these fan-type windmills isn’t just a hobby, it’s part of a legacy. Carl Packwood, President of Vision Bank in Shawnee, Oklahoma, began building, repairing and maintaining windmills when he was just seven years old. “My papa, Cleo Edwards, worked in the oilfield for many years but had to quit for health reasons. Having been raised in the depression, he didn’t like sitting around, so he had to do something. He was at the old Ben Franklin store, on Independence, talking with the owners about options for their well besides an electric pump when Papa suggested they use a windmill. Since windmill construction is somewhat similar, to building oilfield rigs, he used that experience to build his first windmill for their well. I remember laying the towers out on the driveway and painting them for him,” said Packwood. This experience was only the beginning and by the time Packwood was 20 years old, his 70 year old grandfather was “working circles’ around him. Packwood chuckled, “I worked every summer with him and by the end of summer, I could keep up with him pretty good. He believed in hard work and

good, clean living.” Originally, windmills were used for grinding grain, powering saw mills and pumping water. According to the Windmillers Gazette, “between 1850 and 1970 over six million small mechanical windmills were installed in the U.S. alone.” With a rate of six to eight gallons per minute, traditional windmills don’t have the capacity to irrigate farmlands and are mainly used to water livestock. “A lot of farmers use windmills for this purpose because it’s an efficient way to get water to the surface. There’s nothing like fresh water for livestock,” said Packwood. Packwood currently services windmills in the Shawnee and Edmond areas. While some of those windmills are for decoration purposes only, others are used to make life a little easier. “It flows into a stock tank filled with goldfish and then flows into his pond. In this kind of heat it won’t keep the pond full but it will keep it from going completely dry,” said Packwood. As the years went by, Packwood literally followed in his grandfather’s footsteps. “I eventually learned to do anything my papa did. My brother and I did the climbing so my papa didn’t have to go up the towers. There were times he’d do it himself because he couldn’t wait for me to get out of school. He was still climbing windmills when he

was 85 years old,” said Packwood. With today’s windmills costing thousands of dollars for residential ones, millions for commercial ones and decorative windmills for as low as two hundred, Edwards’ legacy was one of a kind. “Papa never bought new windmills. He’d buy old ones that were messed up and refurbish them with new parts if they needed them. I remember when he rebuilt an entire windmill for someone and only charged them $2,500. Today, just the head assembly would cost more than that. He didn’t do this to make money. He did it to have something to do and to provide a service,” said Packwood. Cleo Edwards’ legacy of windmill building and maintenance may end with his grandson. However, the life lessons he taught will last a lifetime. “One thing I attribute to growing up six houses away from my grandparents and working side by side with my papa is how much I learned from him. I’m not afraid to tackle anything. I would’ve never done some of the things I’ve done if I hadn’t learned from him,” said Packwood. “Like Papa always said, Can’t never did anything.”

Reason for the Season B e n e f i t

C o n ce r t Joe Andreani

Ever since the 1970’s, music evolved to more extremes of artistic expression. Thus began the stigma inspiring the older generation’s classic response, “I can’t even tell what they’re saying,” and “turn that down,” or “you call that music?” The youngsters would frown, plead their case, or continue head banging. Probably the most misunderstood genre, today’s “Hard Core” metal music gets the same reaction out of most people over thirty but for the kids the music makes sense and even inspires goodwill. Joe Andreani’s band, Romero put together a concert to benefit two needy families and Project Safe, a shelter for abused women and children. About fifteen bands, ranging from worship, hard core and death metal, will pack the VFW hall December 10th from 3:30pm to midnight. Proceeds from the $5 cover charge and raffles for handmade jewelry and gift certificates for body piercings, restaurants, and a massage will all be donated. The two year old hard core metal group evolved from a secular band. Today, all members of the band have pledged a commitment to God and each other, to use their music to point people to Christ. They encourage listeners to trust their pain and problems to God and inspire them to face issues of the world with solutions. “They see all these problems and they want to do something to change the world but they can’t figure out how to resolve it. The answer is as simple as doing something about it,” said Andreani. They believe God is often blamed for human error. “In every concert, I publicly apologize to anyone

who has ever been hurt by a Christian who’s been a jerk and show them God is separate from that. As a teenager there was a venue called Fuzion Effect and the atmosphere was a group of teenagers who were really pissed off at the world and were there to find some peace and trust in each other. They were teenagers who didn’t trust the church because they didn’t fit the church image. I wanted them to know you don’t need to live up to man’s expectations, but to God’s expectations which is to love Him and everything else will follow. If we love God we will do what’s pleasing to Him.” Although he prefers Rockabilly and Psycho-billy music, Andreani liked the passion behind the hard core and death metal music and the general message if you don’t respect yourself, no one else will. “Hard core, as a general rule is more about being like a brotherhood but there are extreme types of metal like black metal is all about anti-god, anti-religion. Death core is all about being as much of a tough guy as you can.” They never charge to play their music, like a not-forprofit operation, so the band is supported by their own jobs or offerings that should come their way. “It doesn’t feel right to get paid,” said Andreani. “Production companies tell us we have to have money to support the ministry but I feel like if you’re really doing ministry then God is going to support you.” Toy donations are being accepted at Dead Ringer Tattoo in exchange for $10 off a piercing or $20 off any tattoo of $100 or more. Romero wishes to thank participating bands, VFW Post 1317, Dead Ringer Tattoo, the Sonic Corporation, Music Unlimited, and Abuelitas Mexican Restaurant for their contributions.

It is traditional, the week before Christmas each year on a Wednesday evening, our church goes Christmas caroling.
