glvlng back to the city we call home

by: Denise Quinalty

Shawnee is a city of which to be proud! While many of us show this pride by supporting local sports teams or contributing to an array of fundraisers, we often forget about working for the good of the city itself, the place many of us call home. Financial contributions are not always possible or convenient and many times money is not what is needed to make a difference. Giving back in more active ways is sometimes overlooked. With a little team effort, however, one local group is showing us how to rebuild Shawnee in the areas of economy, ecology and equity. Sustainable Shawnee, our local chapter of the Oklahoma Sustainability Network, began in 2005. Today, the organization is made up of about 40 active members with a president, a vice president, a secretary, a treasurer and a past president serving in leadership roles. Shawna K. Turner, 2009 SS president, said members are all volunteers who contribute in various ways. While the group’s focus is on local foods, water conservation, recycling and environment awareness and education, they work with local businesses to promote community involvement. The overall goal of SS is “to engage and involve the citizens of Shawnee on these issues. Turner explained that many members serve on one of three standing committees—Water Conservation, Recycling and Environmental Education. “Others contribute their time to specific projects such as the Annual Local Foods Dinner or event recycling activities, she said. Sustainable Shawnee is a big advocate of event recycling. In the past, Turner said civic groups and other organizations have asked for help in designing recycling programs for events such as the Junior Service League’s Ragin’ Cajun Dinner, Shawnee’s summer youth baseball

program and the downtown art and wine festival. To help with the event recycling program, the Junior Service League provided a grant for the purchase of easy to use recycling bins that can be set up quickly and moved from one location to the next. Turner said SS hopes to make the equipment available at even more upcoming local events. “We hope to work with Shawnee High School in 2010 to place recycling bins at the football games, Turner said. “It takes a lot of education because people are used to throwing everything away without a thought but we hope young people will lead the way in an overall societal behavior change. We hope to continue outreach to civic groups and their members who are active in many aspects of the community. Organizers pay a refundable deposit of $100. In return, they are given five specialized plastic bags with a Secure Lock Feature. Extra bags are available for $1 each. Turner hopes the ease of use of the equipment will encourage groups to consider recycling at their functions. Aluminum cans and plastic bottles will most likely be the focus of the recycling campaign, but Turner said the final decision on what will be offered at each event will be up to organizers. “We would like to see recycling available at all major city and expo events as well as the major sporting facilities. While this likely will not all be accomplished in 2010, we’d like to work towards the goal, Turner said. Also this year, Sustainable Shawnee looks forward to reaching out to local restaurants with the Farm to Restaurant program. The idea is to encourage independently owned restaurants to serve fresh, locally grown produce and meats. In this way, local farmers and ranchers benefit by hav-

MAKING SENSE OF

ing an outlet for their crops. Restaurants benefit with lower shipping prices. Consumers benefit by knowing where their food is grown. Shawnee’s economy receives a boost as consumers are able to buy from their friends and neighbors. In this scenario, everyone wins. Also new this year is the message, “Water: Use it Wisely, which the organization will share with fourth graders at Sequoyah school. The plan is to teach students how clean water makes its way to their homes. Sustainable Shawnee will use money from a grant awarded last year to help fund this program, which will include conservation methods that youngsters and their families can practice daily. In the coming year, Sustainable Shawnee will be promoting conservation to civic groups, businesses, city government and the public through presentations, billboards and other forms of mass communication. Turner said the group’s education committee works with teachers and college students in an effort to prepare and present age-appropriate information. SS has also created a curriculum on sustainable living that is available to schools in the Shawnee area. Sustainable Shawnee, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is always on the lookout for volunteers. The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at University Baptist Church. Dues are $25 a year. Turner said the group attempts to address issues that are important to a wide range of Shawnee residents, so new ideas and approaches are always welcome. For more information, visit sustainableshawnee.org or contact Shawna K. Turner at lpaz232@gmail.com.

Scott’s Space

letter by: Scott Bartley

Hello friends! I hope you all had a festive holiday season! One thing I do love about the holidays is getting to see old friends. Over Thanksgiving I got to spend some time with one of my longest and dearest friends, Alex Greenwood. Alex came to see us, along with his lovely wife Stephanie, and their beautiful little girl Caroline. Alex, in addition to being one of my oldest friends, is also an accomplished Public Relations man and author. Anyhoo, we were discussing my articles, and I told him how I would love to be able to get more feedback. Alex, being the genius PR man, said “Why don’t you just set up an e-mail address for your articles?” So I did! If you would like to comment on any of my articles, or perhaps even give suggestions of what I could write about, e-mail me at scott. space@hotmail.com. However, if you think I stink as an author, please don’t write- my tender ego probably couldn’t handle it. By the time you read this, December 31st will have come and gone. This year’s New Years Eve was significant, because my wife and I celebrated our 15th Wedding Anniversary on that date. Fifteen years! I can’t believe she stayed married to me for 15 minutes! Because of these wonderful years together, I want to dedicate this entire article to her, and what she means to me. Those of you that know me know that I’m not a gushy, sappy, lovey-dovey kinda guy. So I feel that by making this my Love Letter to Cindy, maybe she’ll know somewhat how I feel about her. The story of Scott and Cindy goes way back. We actually started at OBU together back in the fall of 1986. And I believe we even had a class together

our freshman year. I remember thinking “Man- who is that smokin’ hot babe?” Of course, not being the ladies man, I made no effort to talk to her. It wasn’t until years later that I actually got to know her. I left OBU a few years later to move to Hollywood and become a famous actor. (We all know how that turned out.) So when I came back to OBU in 1991, Cindy was working as an Admissions Counselor. And her younger sister, Lisa, was a student there. I got to know Lisa through mutual friends, and I’m sure we wasted much time together sitting in the GC. Well, one day in the fall of 1992, Lisa and I were talking about her sister. Lisa told me that Cindy was single, and not currently dating anyone, so I should call her up and ask her out. It took me a while to actually work up the nerve to call her, because I didn’t really know her. (Cindy swears that back when we were students together, she and a group of friends came to my apartment one time to study for something. I have no recollection of this, but I’m sure it happened, because everything she says is right.) So in January of 1993, I called her up and asked her out. On our first date, I pulled out all the stops. We went to see a movie at the theatre where I worked, so we had free admission. I also brought my own bags and cups for free drinks and popcorn. And we saw the Jack Nicholson movie Hoffa- nothing says romance like Hoffa. I did buy her a cup of coffee at Deem’s Bean Scene afterwards, so I did shell out a little cash. For some reason she liked me, and we continued to date. But about three months into it, I started the typical immature-boy-freak-out, and I broke up with

her. And unlike many couples who break up, we actually became pretty good friends after that. We were friendly for about a year, and then I said one day- “Do you want to date again?” Against her better judgment, she said “OK”, and we were a couple again. For a few months. Then I graduated (finally!) and moved to Arlington, Texas to get a job. We kept in touch over the summer, and we arranged for her to come down and visit. During this time, I was miserable, and decided on a bold move- I was going to propose. So I put on my big boy underwear, bought a ring, and when she came down, I took her to dinner, and asked for her hand. Her immediate response was not really what I expected- she kept saying “Are you serious? Are you serious??!!??” And then she said she’d have to let me know. GREAT! But she did decide the next day, and she said “Yes”. We got married six months later on New Years Eve 1994. These fifteen years have been incredible for me. I can’t imagine another person that I would have wanted to spend my life with. She really is my greatest friend, and the one I want to share everything with. We’ve shared a lot over these last 15 years, some good, and some bad. We’ve seen career changes, gone exciting places, and added members to our little family- my beautiful girls, Sabrina and Marilyn. We’ve also lost some loved ones during this time- our twin boys, and Cindy’s dad, Dr. Robert Todd. But the majority of this time has been wonderful. Cindy- I love you, I’m so happy you agreed to be my wife. These fifteen years have been great, and I can’t wait to grow old with you. Just try and be patient with me, OK?

Call me today about our full line-up. (Auto. Home. Life. Retirement.) Stephanie Sales (405) 275-5520 4331 N. Kickapoo Shawnee

Three Generations Strong

by: Mindy Wood

Rising Star Gymnastics

Debbie Hoag, owner of Rising Star Gymnastics, is excited about Shawnee’s future gymnasts. Ralph and Debbie Hoag moved here from the East Coast two years ago to start a ranch for their horses and are now located in the Coca-Cola building where they opened their gym August 17th. Hoag, former competitive gymnast, owned a gymnastics company for fourteen years. With nearly forty years experience, Hoag is certified through the USAG (USA Gymnastics), taking students from beginner to advanced, levels one through ten and from bronze through platinum in the United State Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs. Hoag is a professional member of the USAG, the organization responsible for running the Olympics. Beyond trampolines and tumbling, Coach Hoag teaches the kind of gymnastics Americans enjoy on TV. “I teach artistic and rhythmic gymnastics or ‘real gymnastics.’ Artistic gymnastics is the high bars, pommel, parallel bars, floor exercise, balance beams, uneven bars, rings, vault and then rhythmic gymnastics is the ribbon, the hoop, rope, clubs, and the ball.” According to Hoag, gymnastics begins with conditioning the body. “You have to teach skill progression and parents sometimes don’t understand why their child isn’t learning a back handspring the first lesson. Safety is first. Until a child is stretched and strong enough to do that move, I will not do it. I teach the skills the right way, in an order where children learn it safely.” Hoag offers a Junior Olympics program for parents who prefer a recreational approach to the sport but will soon offer competitive teams as the program grows. As for training for an Olympic medal, that depends on the parents. “Training for the Olympics is a seven days a week, six or seven hours a day commitment. That’s a big commitment for busy families so right now we’re focusing on the JO program which is how all the elite gymnasts begin.” In addition to the obvious health benefits, Hoag says gymnastics gives kids a head start on life lessons and improves their skills in other sports. One parent who also had her child in soccer got feedback from the coach. “His soccer coach noticed a difference in his performance and asked what other sport he was playing. When he found out she had him in gymnastics he told her to keep it up. I’ve heard parents tell me things like that many times. ‘Gymnastics training does carry over to other sports.” Admirers of the sport also notice it comes with some risks. Flipping, flying and twisting through the air, fearless gymnasts are upside down in mid air. Getting them to that point means overcoming fear, building confidence, and reaping the benefits of hard work. “When they have to work through that fear now while they’re younger, they’ll get through those moments in life when they’re older. We like to think in the gymnastics world, ‘start here and you can go anywhere.’” They also learn how to get along, work together and set goals. Priceless lessons for life in the real world. Rising Star Gymnastics offers recreational classes to students 2 to 18 years and birthday parties. For more information or to check for openings, contact the office at 273-1068 or online at rsgymnasticsok.com.

Westchester Development

When David Little decided to make his way in life he was barely seventeen. Like many ambitious young men in the 1940’s, he sought a brave new world with almost nothing. He left his parent’s farm in an old car and a brown paper sack for a job working in construction for his uncles in Oklahoma City. He learned the construction business and developed exceptional skills in his trade. When he came to Shawnee, the community took notice of his efficient craftsmanship and he started Shawnee Construction Company. Today it is Westchester Development, a third generation business that spans commercial and residential real estate with Westchester Real Estate and Management Company, home design through L& L Design, foundation repair with Westchester Foundation Repair, and more. David’s sons, Mike and Bryan Little, run the day to day operations of the businesses. Mike’s son Matthew Little works in the estimation department. Mike Little grew up working alongside his father David and uncles who invested their lives in their business and their community. They built most of the new housing additions since the sixties and Mike remembers his dad built the first public housing addition in Shawnee followed by housing for the elderly and other community projects. His family follows that tradition of community investment in partnerships with the local housing authorities and organizations like Project Heart, Youth & Family Resource Center, Faith Seven and South Central. While they develop all across the state, their primary focus is Shawnee. They are responsible for the development of Northridge, Smoking Oaks, Highland Farms, Harbour Estates, and more recently Unity Health Center’s new office park, and The Timbers. Mike, his brother Bryan and uncle Bill Little own The Timbers, Inc., an addition meeting new needs in the community. “We have a lot of single women, young married couples, people from OBU and St. Greg’s who wanted smaller but nice, new homes but at a lower price. People are excited to find out they can still buy a new home in the $130’s,” said Mike. While Mike admitted that business is good in spite of a tough national economy, he noted that a third generation business doesn’t come easy. “My dad was always positive about Shawnee and taught us how to ride out the ups and downs; and why it’s important to do a good job, hire quality subcontractors, and pay our bills on time. We’ve never had a lawsuit or a lien filed against us. We strive to be consistent.” Mike said they are proud to be a part of Shawnee’s generous and growing community where good old Oklahoma principles are alive. “Shawnee is a wonderful place. We’ve been fortunate here and hopefully we’ve added to the community as well.” Mike Little remains optimistic about Shawnee’s future and certain that the same opportunities his dad enjoyed sixty years ago are here for the next generation.

Skylor’s

Journey by: Mindy Wood

“You’ve got to do something now or he’s going to end up on medication for the rest of his life,” warned Skylor’s doctor. The results from the blood work were bad all across the board. His mother Jamie was stunned as she tried to force out thoughts of her son on permanent medication or worse, a premature heart attack. But she couldn’t. It was a wake-up call. It was time to take a hard look at his lifestyle. He was only eighteen but the weight her son steadily gained each year put him topping the scales at 300 pounds. “Exercise was not a part of his lifestyle whatsoever,” said Jamie. “We tried different kinds of diets like everyone else does but finally it was my husband who got us started when he said, ‘Jamie

we’ve got to get him moving.’” Skylor loved video games. In fact he was a ten hour day gamer, so gradually his parents cut him back to one hour every other day. Having a few goals helped him accept a new way of life. Skylor always participated in Special Olympics but instead of running around the track he was forced to walk because of his weight. Next year he wanted that to be different and he was willing to make the sacrifices. Jeff signed Skylor up for a membership at the YMCA and showed him the ropes. A former athlete in college, Jeff knew how to eat properly and exercise. “He put Skylor on the treadmill at first for forty-five minutes and then showed him how

“His doctor was just amazed and she was so proud. He has a clean bill of health and that’s the biggest gift.”

to use weights,” said Jamie. “I think one of the biggest things that helped him were the TV’s in front of the treadmills,” said Jeff. “He would get lost in what he was watching and could have walked for hours as long as he was into something.” Next came the adjustments in his diet. Jamie admitted that also brought dynamic changes to their home. “Jeff knew how to eat right but I did not. It was hard because when Jeff was home we ate right but when I was home with Skylor we didn’t. It wasn’t consistent and I had to make changes and educate myself. You think you know how to diet but it’s about changing your life. I went out and bought all the Biggest Loser books. I taught myself how to eat six small meals a day and incorporated it into his lifestyle.” Things are never as simple as they are planned

to be. Switching from burgers and fries to turkey and whole wheat seemed to take the joy out of eating at first. “As a mom, I still looked at him as my baby. I felt like I was depriving him. I resisted Jeff on Skylor’s diet at first and he had to make me understand that I wasn’t depriving him, I was helping him. We were keeping him from a heart attack.” They also found ways to keep foods Skylor liked such as pizza. “He still eats some of the same things, just healthier,” said Jeff. “I make pizza with whole wheat crust. We just made it better for him.”

Skylor also learned to apply what his parents were teaching him. “We took him to restaurants and let him make the choices. We would ask him, ‘what’s the better choice?’ That’s how he learned to make better choices and he also knows how to eat six small meals a day.” Jamie credit’s her son’s drive to succeed to faith as well. “Faith has been a huge part of this. I had to pray that God would give Skylor the endurance. I asked Him to give him the drive to do this and for Jeff and I to be encouraged to help him stay with it.” With his eating habits under control and his dramatic increased daily activity, the pounds

starting melting away. Skylor starting seeing results and enjoying some short term goals. “He’s always wanted to fit into Jeff ’s clothes so along his journey he would say, ‘let me see if I can fit into your jeans yet!’ Slowly he has fit into his shirts, shoes and almost the jeans,” said Jamie. “He went from an XXXL shirt to an XL and from a 52 inch waist to a 36,” said Jeff. He lost a hundred pounds. The most encouraging results for Skylor was the day he won second place for running the track in Special Olympics earlier this year. Students and teachers from Meeker who had not seen him in a year were awed by his dramatic weight loss. “That was a big deal to be able to accomplish that,” said Jamie. “We’re so proud.” Jamie said the best results came from the doctor’s office. “His doctor was just amazed and she was so proud. He has a clean bill of health and that’s the biggest gift.” As for Skylor, he is continuing to reach for more goals with some extra confidence. He is working part time and received his driver’s permit. When asked about how he feels today, he said, “I feel like a superstar.” Everyone in his life agrees he looks like one too.

Lonnie McDaniels understands the word determination. In fact, those who know him might say he lives and breathes it. By day, McDaniels works the lunch scene at Paul’s Place. By night, he works the dinner crowd at Santa Fe Cattle Co. Before, between, during and after shifts he is a professional boxer and a dad to six-year-old son Trace. McDaniels lived in Washington state and in Ponca City before moving to Shawnee in 1990. After graduating from Shawnee High School in 1993, he attended Oklahoma Baptist where he played baseball. McDaniels went on to play Frontier League baseball with the Springfield Capitals in Illinois for a short time. Despite his experience with the bat, what really stuck with McDaniels since childhood are the gloves—the set of boxing gloves his dad gave him as a kid. He started training in 1999 and in 2005 began competing in Toughman tournaments, single-elimination competitions in which competitors wear 16-ounce gloves and headgear. McDaniels made a name for himself, going 14-1 with 9 knockouts and winning two Toughman titles in McAlister, one in 2005 and the second in 2007. In May of 2009, McDaniels achieved another milestone. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business from St. Gregory’s, showing that his sense of determination extends into more than one area of his life. One day, McDaniels would like to combine the degree he worked so hard to earn with the sport he loves so much. He hopes to open a sports bar and grill complete with boxing memorabilia. He would also like to have a gym where he could introduce the sport and discipline of boxing to local kids, but first, he has something to prove. In June of 2009, McDaniels began training with Vernon Woodward of Thunder Boxing in McLoud. The two decided it was time for McDaniels to take a big step in his career, moving from the semi-pro world of the Toughman to professional boxing. This change would mean using 10-ounce gloves and no headgear. Instead of tournament-style, fights would

now be scheduled one at a time and be four rounds long. “Anyone can fight and say they’re pro,” McDaniels explained, “but it takes hard work to win. You can’t go in expecting to win and not put any work in.” He said the time for him to make his move in the world of pro boxing is now as prime time for men in the sport is between the ages of 30 and 38. As a 34-year-old, he has roughly four years to make his mark and achieve his ultimate objective. “My main goal is to be champ,” McDaniels said. “I want my son to look up to me—to say ‘my dad went back to school and got his degree and is now the champ.’” Another motivating factor to going pro is power. The boxer explained that, even if an opponent is outpointing him in the ring, he has the power to turn the fight around with one punch, which his record confirms. “People aren’t staying in the ring with me for very long,” he said. >

continued from pg. 17

And he is not being cocky. McDaniels made his pro boxing debut at Paradise City Club in Oklahoma City last October. He and his opponent were the main event for the evening. The fight lasted one minute and twenty-eight seconds and ended with a TKO—the technical knock out of the opponent— meaning the referee determined he could no longer protect himself from McDaniels’s punches. While he fights, McDaniels said he is always thinking and he is always aware. After all, he said, that is why the sport is called the “Sweet Science.” A boxer has to be able to study his opponent, take a hit once or twice and then learn how to react, especially at this stage of the game when the level of competition is going up. McDaniels said his will to win overcomes any lack of skill he may face. “I feel anxious before but once the bell rings, I don’t feel anything,” he said. “I’m concentrating on winning. The rush for me comes after the fight. That’s what I love about boxing—the accomplishment and hard work show in the ring.” Woodward believes McDaniels has the will and the determination to go far in the world of boxing. To make sure he has every opportunity to achieve his dream, McDaniels trains hard every chance he gets, which includes mornings, evenings and between jobs. He runs the airport track several times a week,

works with a heavy bag, shadow boxes with weights, spars with various opponents and jumps rope 10-15 minutes before starting anything. Woodward and McDaniels also work on different punching techniques and combinations with mitts. “You’re only as good as your shape. I’ve got to put my work in. It’s just the sacrifice I’ve got to make,” McDaniels said of the time and energy devoted to such a regimen. Trace, a student at Bethel, is helping his dad train, too. Although not yet old enough to compete in the sport, he has learned a few moves of his own and is learning to be a responsible fighter who is proud of his dad. “I feel real good,” he said. “I tell my friends he’s a pro boxer.” As a trainer, Woodward encourages repetition. He wants to go over and over combinations so that they become natural instincts. Timing is another important skill, especially when deciding what to do next and how to counter an opponent. When he watches McDaniels in the ring Woodward is thinking, “I hope he stays in control and uses the techniques we worked on.” As a promoter, Woodward explained that clubs want to host fights for boxers with a fan base so why not show a little support?

www.towfree.com

“Any local shows—come out and see them!” Woodward said. Woodward, who participated in 13 Toughmans and won three, has been training boxers for five years. He trains amateurs and a few professionals and works with boys and girls as well as adults who want to learn more about the sport. When agreeing to train someone, Woodward looks at a person’s well-being. He also looks for someone who has a desire to learn the sport and to perfect it. Woodward sees these traits in McDaniels and plans to step up his training to prepare for the next fight, which he hopes will be near the end of January. For this next match, Woodward is looking for someone with experience to compete with McDaniels in the light-heavy weight division. McDaniels said he will be posting information about upcoming fights on his Facebook page. “I’m ready for the challenge,” McDaniels said. “Turning pro at 34 seems ridiculous to some, but to me it’s about the challenge and the satisfaction of winning—putting in the hard work and dedication to accomplish a goal. I want my son to look up to his father and understand what it takes to be a winner in life. Things that come easy aren’t valued like they are when you’ve worked your tail off for it.”

Weight Loss Challenge

The applications are in, the contestants for this year’s contest determined. Although we left 18 slots open, only 12 applicants made the cut. Trainers selected their contestants carefully. They couldn’t select everyone and they knew it. Twelve excited contestants got a phone call from KIRC Radio where trainers delivered the good news just days before Christmas. Like an early Christmas present, they shrieked and cried with excitement. Maybe it was because they know this is one gift they will use the rest of their lives. This year’s contest is a whole new game with new trainers and a former contestant on board, Traci Guptill. She selected one contestant whom she will co-train under Red Team’s head trainer LaDawn Hladik. “I am so honored by this and excited about being able to share with someone else something that changed my life,” said Guptill. “I’m not the same person. I’m here to give back what has been invested in me.” For twelve weeks contestants will compete against each other and their opposing team members for a chance to win the Most Weight Lost, Most Inches Lost, or Most Body Percent Lost. Contestants will work out once a week with a free personal trainer who will track their diets and develop an exercise program suited to their needs. Each winner will receive a free YMCA family membership and prizes from local businesses. PSG Media will film interviews and team challenges and air them on the website at www.shawneeloser.com,

provided by Ministrypixel.com. The site will feature a blog from both teams, the contest moderator and a forum where contestants will share information and tips with each other and generally bash each other in good humor. Also available is the healthy living page where recipes and tips from the trainers will give viewers the opportunity to learn from the contestants. Rob Grogan from KIRC will air interviews with trainers and their clients every Wednesday on “The No Name Show” at 3 pm. Challenges will be more…well challenging! Points will be determined based on overall performance during the challenge and quiz scores based on the knowledge they retain from weekly handouts. The losing team this year will be forced to do penance for their failure to win a challenge. The winning team will decide what to dish out such as cleaning the weight room, cooking for the winners or even washing the opposing head trainer’s car. Although contestants are not voted off, if they don’t watch out they can be ousted from the program due to lack of participation, poor sportsmanship, or refusal to cooperate with their trainers. If they miss more than two appointments with their trainer or team challenges, they’re out of the game. Find out who the next contestants are at www.shawneeloser.com Stay tuned for video interviews, pictures, updates on their progress and more. The Shawnee Outlook will keep readers informed about who’s who in the contest and what’s up next for Shawnee’s Weight Loss Challenge.

Reflections

No Worries. by: Bob Searl

There was a knock at the door of the first house we owned on the first Monday morning after we moved in. I had already gone to work and my wife was doing laundry which she had hung on the clothesline in the backyard. She answered a knock at our front door, and found there a stoop-shouldered old woman wearing a faded cotton dress. Her coarse gray hair was pulled into a bun so tight that it smoothed the wrinkles on the forehead of her deeply lined face. My wife described her as a strange cross between Emily Litella and Ma Kettle. She held a long gray root in her hand. “So, do you think is a radish or a parsnip?” she asked in a thick German accent. No greeting like “hello” or “good morning.” The question was her howdy. My wife looked at the woman, then at the rootish thing she carried, and said it looked like a white radish to her, though she hadn’t seen that many and couldn’t be sure. Apparently satisfied with Debbie’s answer the lady said, “Okay. Do you have a phone number?” Deb wrote our number on a piece of paper. The lady took the paper and said, “Okay then,” and walked slowly to the house next door. Less than five minutes later the phone rang. It was the lady. “The clothes on your line out back are dry,” she said. And so began our relationship with Mrs. Martin, our first next door neighbor. Mrs. Martin wasn’t only concerned about the condition of our laundry; she was concerned about the condition of my soul.

It kind of freaked me out the first time she pointed a crooked finger at me and said in her raspy voice, “Don’t take the mark of the beast! Don’t take the 666.” She was referring to a passage from “Revelation” a book at the end of the New Testament that describes what many people interpret as the end of the world. To take the mark of the beast is to align one’s self with ultimate evil. I assured her that I would be certain not to take “the mark,” but she wasn’t convinced. “I’m a Baptist minister, Mrs. Martin,” I said emphatically, to which she replied, “I know. Don’t take the mark!” Her finger practically touched my nose. I thought reminding her of my religious vocation would help her feel better about my chances at the end of time, but apparently she thought that being Baptist made me more, rather than less, susceptible to absolute evil. No matter how hard I tried to convince her that I wouldn’t “take the mark,” she would not be dissuaded. Her mind was made up. She was committed to worrying about me. You probably know a world-class worrier, someone who excels at hand wringing, night sweating, floor pacing anxiety. Some people look for the negative like they’ll get a prize for finding it. And there is plenty to worry about: wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a sputtering economy, flaws in the BCS Championship Bowl Series process. There are at least two problems with worry. First, worry is an enormous time waster. What is worry but feeling lousy about things I cannot con-

trol or have not yet happened? I love what Mark Twain said: “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” He’s absolutely right, you know, and this is why worry is such a waste. Why spend valuable time and emotional energy fretting about things that will probably not happen. Second, people who worry can be, well…irritating. My mother, who was an especially gifted worrier, began to wonder, thirty miles down the road on our family vacation, if she had turned off the iron. These were the days before clothes irons shut themselves off. Dad assured her that she had, but all mom could think about was returning to a burned out shell. All our furniture, family pictures, and important documents would be reduced to ash. Dad said he knew she had turned the iron off, so she could stop worrying. But mom couldn’t turn off her fretting, and so, at about forty-five miles down the road dad turned the car around and drove home. The iron was off. We were not happy with mom. Had things turned out differently and the iron had been left on, we would have felt differently as well. The person who suffers most in all this, however, is the worrier. They are the ones with the knotted stomachs and sleepless nights. I know because I’ve inherited the worry gene. The thing that helps me most is to remember that life is good, and that the One who gives us life is good, and that most of the things I worry about really do not happen. I hope this helps you, too.
