amamurthy Nagar: Karnataka Minister for Wo m e n & C h i l d Development Umashree inaugurated Vijaya Bank's allwoman branch at Ramamurthy Nagar. It is the first bank of this kind in Bangalore. Basavaraj Byrathy, Member of the Legislative Assembly and K.R Shenoy, the Bank's Executive Director were present on the occasion. Vijaya Bank extended several Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives at Ramamurthy Nagar. As a first measure of CSR initiative, the bank adopted a girl child to support her education till her graduation.

angalore: A series of blasts and terror attacks occurring in the major metropolitan cities in the country re-instate the shaky administrative capacity of India. Add to this the public loss of life and property caused due to natural calamities like flood and earthquake. There have been reports that many important documents and data have been lost in such cases, which can do a great harm to the interest of India and its citizens. Bangalore, being one of the soft targets for militant forces, is now gearing up to the looming danger of further attacks. It is set to get its 1st blast-proof building by next year. Probably, this is just the beginning where the country would rise up to the necessity of such buildings to protect its data.

designed to be 50 mm thick and will have a blast-proof 'C' rating. On an overall, this huge campus will have an expanse of 6,25 sqm and with a storage capacity of 6 peta bytes with 4,000 servers. Keeping the flood factor in mind, the engineers have designed to elevate it to 2.1 meters from the ground level. It is also earthquake resistant. Bangalore is under Zone-2 on the earthquake sensitive scale; however, the data centre is being built for the Zone 3 level, which would be a lot safer. The building will be green too. Besides meeting global standard on safety and security, the structure will be a green building compliant with L e a d e r s h i p i n E n e rg y a n d Environmental Design gold rating.

industry as well as consumers. Lowering of VAT rates would have boosted morale of industry, he added. Mr Crasta welcomed the proposals
In a statement here, Mr J Crasta, Co-chairman, ASSOCHAM Southern Regional Council welcomed the decision to reduce Cess on diesel. This, he said would give some relief to industry as well as consumers. Mr Crasta further said that industry was anxiously looking towards Chief Minister in the hope of getting some relief in VAT rates. L e a v i n g t h e VAT structure untouched will put industrial units in the State at a disadvantage vis-a-vis their counterparts in adjoining states where VAT rates were relatively lower. Mr Crasta added that it would be difficult for the State to collect budgeted revenue from VAT during the rest of the financial year. At the same time burden will remain on
to establish Textile Park at Yadgir and Granite Park at Chamrajnagar. He expressed hope that the Government would put in place a mechanism to ensure timely implementation of these proposals. Mr Crasta also welcomed grant of Rs 100 crore for Solid Waste Management. However, he said, it
was important that the administration garners will deal with waste management in a scientific manner. Welcoming the proposals for establishment of new educational institutions including 4 medical colleges in the State, Mr Crasta urged better management of existing institutions so as to make optimum use of existing resources. M r C r a s t a welcomed special steps proposed to be taken for betterment of Bangalore. He however called for better civic management to improve quality of life in the city. He also urged upgradation of civic infrastructure in other Tier II and Tier III cities. Mr Crasta also welcomed proposals relating to interest free and subsidised loans for farmers. He expressed hope that this would ease credit availability for farmers.

Exhibition portrays the journey of Indian Railway
B
angalore: On the occasion of completing 160 glorious years of the Indian Railways, South-Western Railway organized a weeklong photo exhibition showcasing rare moments of the railway journey and putting it on display. "Railways has progressed immensely reaching to every doorstep in the last 160 years. We have portrayed the journey of the railways by displaying rare photographs from all these years," said Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) Sandeep Mehra. The photographs were put on display after a careful selection and consideration from the archives of Indian railways so that the railway fans can have close look at it. More than 100 rare photographs were displayed in the exhibition, reviving the nostalgia of passengers with ancient trains, engines and political dignitaries like Mahatma Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi making their journeys. The photographs were divided into different varieties and according to the era. Visitors taking a look at the Indian railways journey praised the immense progress made by the railways. Railway's initiative had been very good. Earlier, there were only carts and most people had to travel by foot. The invention of railways made life easy. A huge difference has come in the railway of ancient times and now. The initiative of railways had been very good.

IF THERMAL AND HYDEL POWERS HAVE ISSUES, CAN WIND BE FAR BEHIND? If thermal and hydel powers have issues, can wind be far behind? B a n g a l o r e : Wi n d energy commerce is one of the fastestgrowing and economic energy sectors in the world. However, the wind resource is governed by the climatology of the region concerned and has large variability in location and season. The Indian wind energy sector has seen a rapid trajectory growth during the past few years owing to policy incentives and support from the ministry. The wind power industry is, however, going through a transition, as the government withdrew some of the financial benefits the stakeholders had earlier and due to issues like transmission, land availability and revenue instability plaguing it, the official noted. As a result, the industry growth in the last fiscal (2012-13) when the combined installation of wind power projects declined by 50
percent from the previous fiscal
(2011-12), hampering investor confidence in the market. For securing maximum output of power using a given type of wind electric generator, an assessment of the wind resource available at any prospective site is essential. Estimation of wind power potential is based on data of the wind frequency distribution at the site, are collected from official meteorological data. The
analyses show that coastal and dry arid zones in Karnataka have good wind potential. When the data already shows results in favour of a resourceful wind energy, the government is acting at a slower pace in tapping wind energy. However, the MPs from coastal states are planning to meet on July 13 to come up with an action plan on the development of wind energy and challenges facing the industry. The meeting will be the first of its kind held on challenges in the wind energy sector to initiate policy dialogue and parliamentary interventions. Organised by Climate Parliament, a global network of parliamentarians promoting renewable energy, the two-day meeting will discuss the document on the development of wind power during the current 12th Five Year Plan. Issues of coal linkages faced by thermal power plants and environmental clearance issues haunting hydel power projects, wind energy will be the focus of the state in future.

Toppers missing in CET counselling?
B
angalore: Computer science turns out be be a neglected subject by students when comes to CET. This year. The first round of CET counselling reveals that students are in favour of core engineering courses. This is generally considered to be a poor turnout with only 50% of the rank holders turned up to avail the seats at the counselling. Is it because many students are planning to opt for reputed deemed universities for higher studies? It is a real surprise. The seat allotments are available in the KEA website. This year more students are vying for mechanical engineering. Surprisingly, students are keen on agriculture studies and the counselling shows that most of the seats in agriculture are filled unlike in the previous years. The option of paying fees through online has been introduced for the first time this year. About 3500 seats are remaining to be filled in the next round of counselling.

ITC to try its hand for a zero garbage city
B
The joy of Rithu and James grew endless for the day, Their mind recalling their teacher in a stray. The classroom lessons were all the more grey, With ducks and swans winning their way, Amidst the lilies and lotus spread away. And the whisper of the cuckoos on the books Will soon come alive. The father and mother had a delight For children are their grace, While their car was on the race.
angalore: The ITC Ltd extended its 'wealth out of waste' programme to Bangalore by roping in ragpickers and civic workers to make the city greener by cleaning up its garbage. "As ambassadors of the programme, rag-pickers and civic workers will get at least Rs.3,000 more per month to sustain their livelihood by collecting garbage in 10 civic wards across the city
Breaking for a lunch was their aim, With no sign of a lake in their way. And father becomes reckless on the way; “Will you make it soon” asking the driver by the way. The time had a lapse meanwhile, And nothing could be done worthwhile, But being in the car moving away. Tea, biscuits, fun and frolic held sway To keep the spirit level high, While the driver was busy hunting a lake. With no lake in sight, A bystander came to their relief. To keep their dreams alive, Directed the driver a mile away And through his finger right away. With the car coming to a halt, Everyone made their way, In search of the lake in sight. With surprise on the wait. They looked agape; high and above An 18-storied building. The children looked in awe While father was puzzled, Adjusting his spectacles in disbelief. “Wherefore, here?” whimpered the mother. “Yea. Very much here, under, Beneath was a lake not today Green and lush that day” Replied the bystander gallantly.

and segregating them for recycling," ITC's food division chief executive Chitranjan Dar said at a function ahead of the third anniversary of the 'National Recycling Day' July 1. Involving BBMP in the novel initiative, the pilot programme will cover all sections of society spanning households, offices, shops, schools, malls, hotels and hospitals. "The programme will also cover post-consumer FMCG waste, which has become a major source of litter across the city. The civic corporation will provide dry waste collection centres in each ward to segregate wet garbage by its staff," Dhar said. The $7-billion company will also train rag-pickers and civic staff on segregating dry waste and sorting it into categories like paper, plastic, glass and metal for recycling.
"Each household, shop, office and other collection centres will be given durable polythene bags to collect the dry waste. Rag-pickers and civic workers will be paid market price for the quantity of recyclables they collect daily," Dhar pointed out. The programme seeks to generate awareness in the public about the reduce-reuserecycle approach and inculcate the habit of source segregation, which is in line with the company's sustainable natural resource management. The programme seeks to protect environment by improving green cover, reducing landfills and enhancing ground water quality for restoring hygiene and providing cost competitive raw material to paper, plastics, metal and glass industries. According the company's estimate, if 30 percent of daily garbage containing recyclables is separated at source across six cities, about 10,000 tonnes of raw material can be generated daily for paper, plastic and metal industry. "The value generation can be Rs.50 crore daily if recyclables are recovered from towns and cities across the country," the company said in a statement here. Lauding the pilot project, BBMP commissioner M. Lakshminarayana said the programme was in line with the vision of making Bangalore a zero garbage city. "It is essential to educate people and inculcate the habit of segregation of waste at source," the commissioner said.
The healing practice of mudras Bommanahalli: The Universe is composed of five elements, earth, air, water, fire, and ether. Similarly our body is also a union of five elements which is represented by our five fingers. Hand mudras regulate these five elements in our body. The fingers representing five elements are: the thumb for Fire; the index (Jupiter finger) for Air; the middle (Saturn finger) for Ether or Space; the ring (Sun finger) for Earth; and the pinky (Mercury finger) for Water. Mudras in general are actions of hands and fingers that can be performed at any time in any way, like sitting, standing, walking or travelling. So there's no need to devote a special time to perform a mudra, but the maximum benefit is by doing it in sitting posture, especially in sukhasana (easy pose), vajrasana, or padmasana. If you have constriants of time you can even perform them in installments. A 3 day workshop is organized at regular intervals by Oshodhara. This time it is organised in Bangalore under the guidance of the state co-ordinator Shri Osho Yashi Ji, by Yoga Acharya Shri Dr. Romesh Puri. He will teach various mudras to bring back the balance of that element and cure many diseases such as diabetes, obesity, asthma, arthritis, thyroid, etc. For more details, contact Mr. Harpreet at 9880388609.

Are we immune to filthy water? Domlur: “Drinking more water may be an inexpensive and painless way to safeguard our health.” This may not be acceptable in the case of people living in Bangalore. Mr. V Balasubramanian, former Additional Chief Secretary, GOK had questioned Dr Chidambaram, who is in charge of Microbiology Lab of Public Health Institute, as to why there has been no outbreak of any kind of epidemic due to the contamination in Bangalore. Dr Chidambaram replied, “People of Bangalore have developed immunity as they have been drinking it for 10 years.” Are you shocked for having drunk contaminated water for several years in Bangalore? The Department of Mines and Geology came out with an alarming report in 2011 which said that, 52% of bore well water in Bangalore is nonpotable, stated Balasubramanian. The reports also mentioned that 27% of this water contains Escherichia Coli. Public Health Institute studied 1,428 water samples collected from all over the city, both Cauvery water and bore well water, and found that 59% of the samples contained E.Coli and maximum level of contamination was found at developed areas. This is because the sewage water in pipelines that run parallel to drinking water pipelines percolate into potable water due to leakage, and thus contaminates it. Escherichia Coli is one of the dangerous
bacteria that are present in the nonpotable water that Bangalore consumes. It will infect intestine leading to severe diarrhoea and loss of excess blood and other problems. While addressing a public gathering at Bangalore I n t e r n a t i o n a l C e n t r e , M r. Balasubramanian cautioned people that infection by E. Coli cannot be treated by any regular diarrhoea courses as it will aggravate the bacteria. Lack of access to c l e a n water and sanitatio n kills children at a rate equivale nt of a jumbo jet crashing e v e r y f o u r hours. E. coli O157:H7 is one of hundreds of strains of the bacterium E. coli. Although most strains are harmless and live in the intestines of healthy humans and animals, this strain produces a

Vol. 4, Issue 46
severe illness. Infection often causes severe bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps; sometimes the infection causes non-bloody diarrhea. In some p e o p l e , particularly children under 5 years of age and the elderly, the infection can also cause a complication c a l l e d hemolytic u r e m i c syndrome, in which the red blood cells are destroyed a n d t h e kidneys fail. About 2%7 % o f infections lead to this complication. Hemolytic u r e m i c syndrome is the principal cause of acute kidney failure in children, and most cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome are caused by E. coli. Hemolytic uremic syndrome is a life-threatening condition usually treated in an intensive care unit. Blood transfusions and kidney dialysis are often required. Even with intensive care, the death rate for hemolytic uremic syndrome is very much likely. What has led to this situation and who is responsible for water contamination in the city? The mindless infrastructure planning has led to depletion and contamination of ground water. The city is already drawing 140
6
MLD water from Cauvery, while the actual limit is 90 TMC. What is the solution then? You will be out of breath if you are told about the practical solution to get out of this water contamination problem. Rs. 26,000/- crores is required to change the present water pipeline and also to address the water scarcity problem which means every house will have to spend more than Rs. 85 per KL of water. This is the only way to resolve the current problem according to Mr. Balasubramaniam. When the people are already in the midst of fighting inflation, how eager will they be to spend about Rs. 85 to 95 per KL against the subsidized rate of Rs. 9 per KL being paid currently. The city's lakes have been disappearing at the same speed with which the city's population is growing, remarked Balasubramaniam. He said, “You cannot restore a lake by building fences or parks around it. Unless you divert the sewage water, lakes cannot be restored.” The 850 kms of Storm Water Drains that are constructed to divert the excess water from one lake to another are carelessly encroached, destructed, blocked by bus stations, railways, stadiums, golf clubs, big IT parks and apartments. Thanks to Bangalore International Centre for arranging a Panel Discussion on “The Critical Water Situation in Bangalore – The Way Forward” on Friday, 21st June, 2013. The lead discussant was Mr. V Balasubramanian. The other Panelist was Mr. Gaurav Gupta, Chairman, BWSSB. The discussion was chaired and moderated by Justice M N Venkatachalaiah, Former Chief Justice of India.
I could go over the typical remove a skin with duct tape or fingernail polish and they do work but can be painful. Instead, in this article I am going to focus on herbal remedies to treat skin tags. The upside to herbal remedies is that they are less invasive than other "fast" remedies. The downside is that they take a little more time and consistency in order for them to work.... Tea Trea Oil- Tea tree oil works very well for removing skin tags as well as moles. In fact, tea tree oil is used on various skin disorders. To use this all you need is a little tea tree oil and a cotton ball. Soak the cotton ball in the oil and apply it directly to the affected area. Do this once or twice daily for up to 4 weeks or until the skin tag vanishes. Castor Oil- Most of you are too young to remember castor oil but this oil was used on a wide variety of common ailments and can be taken both internally and externally. The good news is that you will be using castor oil as an external ointment (I still shudder whenever I think of drinking that stuff). Here is what you will do. Take a little baking soda and mix it with the castor oil to create a paste. I suggest you add some citrus oil as it will stink Continued to page 7

Intelligent cinema can also entertain us! Ship of Theseus is a 2013 Indian drama film written and directed by Anand Gandhi, and produced by actor Sohum Shah. The film explores "questions of identity, justice, beauty, meaning and death through the stories of an experimental photographer, an ailing monk and an enterprising stockbroker”; played by Aida El-Kashef, Neeraj Kabi and Sohum Shah. The film is scheduled to release in India on 19 July 2013. Reviews for the film have been largely positive. Few reviewers named “one of the most significant films to have come
out of India”. Members of the Critics' Circle, UK were invited to select and introduce a screening of “the
film that changed their life,” The president of the British Federation of Film Societies Derek Malcolm chose Ship of Theseus. Screen International commended the film as being, “Cerebral, visually stunning and completely different to anything we've seen before from independent Indian cinema… [a film] aiming at art and importance rather than mere profit.” The Globe and Mail called it “an intellectual, contemplative film”. Shekhar Kapur tweeted,
“Finally a brilliant new filmmaker emerges in Anand Gandhi with Ship of Theseus.” Anurag Kashyap called it, “The most brilliant film to have been made in India in decades. Puts all of us to shame.” Andand Gandhi is an argumentative director who wants to prove that the youth of India are not frivolous. He clearly associated re-associated intelligence with entertainment. People of today believe that if something is intelligent, then it cannot be entertaining. But Anand Gandhi has proved this notion wrong through hismovies.
Don't fallback on your warning system By S. Gopal from Jayanagar IV Block Bangalore: Most people know how to protect the heart, but do you know how to care for your kidneys? The kidneys' job is to help remove various toxins (drugs and food wastes), and expel them through the urine. As we grow older, our kidneys will also start to age. A problem with kidney disease is that majority of patients have no warning symptoms. While interviewing Dr. Elizabeth Montemayor, a nephrologist at the Philippine General Hospital we received a few tips. Here are those 10 ways to protect your kidneys: (1) Limit your salt intake - Too much salt is not only bad for your blood pressure, it's also bad for your kidneys. Many die of kidney disease, which can be partly attributed to a high salt intake and fondness for fish sauce, soy sauce, plain salt and salted fish. Even instant noodles, chips and nuts are teeming with salt. The problem with salt is that it encourages the body to retain water, and can increase your blood pressure (which damages the kidneys). (2) Don't load up on high protein foods such as meat and steaks - A high protein diet makes the kidneys work twice as hard. Pretty soon, your kidneys could get tired and some of the weaker kidney cells can die. A friendly reminder to people on a high-protein Atkin's Diet or South Beach Diet. The time-tested doctor's advice of moderation in everything will serve you well. Eat a balanced diet of rice, vegetables,
fish and fruits and you can't go w r o n g . (3) Keep your blood pressure at 130/80 or lower -- If your blood pressure is above 140 over 90, this can cause kidney damage within five years. The kidneys are said to be "happiest" with a blood pressure of 130/80 or lower. To help control your blood pressure, you should limit your salt intake, reduce weight and take medicines for high blood pressure, if needed. (4) Keep your blood sugar below 120 mg/dl -- Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney failure. A person with uncontrolled diabetes for 5-10 years may develop significant kidney damage. Consult your doctor and keep your blood sugar under control with diet, exercise and maintenance medicines. (5) Drink 8 glasses of water a day -Doctors usually advise people to take in 8 glasses of water a day, but this really depends on your age and condition. If you're sweating a lot and work outdoors, you may need to drink more than 8 glasses a day. However, if you are above 65 years of age, you may do well with just 6 glasses a day. Drinking enough water also prevents the formation o f k i d n e y s t o n e s . (6) Watch your intake of pain relievers and other drugs -- Taking pain relievers like mefenamic acid, ibuprofen and the coxibs (like celecoxib) for a prolonged period of time may cause kidney damage. Because of this, we should limit taking these medicines to only a week, or just take them as needed.
For those with chronic arthritis, try to look for other ways to relieve the pain such as using a hot water bag, pain reliever ointments, or the safer paracetamol tablet. (7) Be careful with tests and procedures using contrast dyes -Some tests, like CT Scans and MRIs, and angiograms, use a contrast dye which helps doctors delineate the organs better. The problem with such dyes is that they can cause kidney damage. To be safe, I would strongly advise you to consult a kidney specialist before undergoing such procedures. (8) Don't drink too much Vitamin C -- Excess vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can lead to the formation of kidney stones in predisposed individuals. If you need to take vitamin C, a dose of 500 mg or less is safer. (9) Don't rely on food supplements to protect your kidneys -- The above tips are so far the best tips to care for the kidneys. (10) Get a kidney check-up -Simple tests, such as a complete blood count, BUN and creatinine, and a urinalysis are the first screening tests for the kidneys. Finding a trace of protein in the urine can alert the doctor of possible kidney disease. The incidence kidney failure (or chronic Kidney disease) has doubled the last 15 years. The crisis of kidney shortage is a global phenomenon and it is worst in Asian countries. There were over one lakh patients waiting for a transplant in the United States. Two deaths every five minutes in
India due to kidney disease. One of India's well known nephrologists H. Sudarshan Ballal from Manipal Hospital says that kidney disease is a silent killer. He adds that many people get their blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked on a regular basis, but fail to get separate "creatinine test" done to detect often painless and therefore unknown kidney problems. The bottomline is that kidney diseases are expensive and difficult to treat. Let's take the necessary steps to protect our kidneys today. THREE HERBAL TREETMENTS TO REMOVE SKIN TAGS from page 6
to high heaven. Apply it to the affected area and cover with a band-aid. The typical time it will take is 2-4 weeks before the skin tag vanishes. Apple Cider Vinegar-Apple cider vinegar works very well for removing skin tags and the good news is that you can buy it in a grocery store for fairly cheap. Just like tea tree oil, you simply dab some of it on a q-tip or cotton ball and apply it directly to the skin tag. Unlike the tea tree oil, Apple Cider vinegar may cause a stinging sensation for a couple minutes after being applied. Typical time until the skin tag vanishes?....2-4 weeks. Those are just 3 herbal treatments that you can use to remove skin tags. If you don't mind waiting a couple weeks and can discipline yourself to treating the skin tag at least once a day, then these will naturally treat your skin tags from your home.

J&K in news for cricket this time
B
angalore: Parveez Rasool, who became the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to be included in the Indian team, spent his first day at the National Cricket Academy preparing for the upcoming tour to Zimbabwe beginning July 24. Hailing from Beijbehara, a small town in Kashmir, the off-spinner arrived at the NCA on Monday around 10 am as advised by legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi. He spent his time indoors at the NCA, working on his fitness with the trainers. The 24-year-old, who has been in contention for national selection for a while now after
a string of impressive performances, got the nod in the squad after the national selectors preferred to go in with a young team. The series will be held from July 24 to August 3 at Harare and Bulawayo. The decision to rest Ravichand ran Ashwin paved the way for Rasool`s selection in the senior team since he is also an offspinner. The selectors also picked the India `A` team for the tour of South Africa which also includes Rasool. He has taken 46 wickets in 17 first-class matches and scored 1003 runs at an impressive average of 38.57.
