Bangalore: In the wake of devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan that affected nuclear power plants, there is a call for a moratorium on nuclear energy in India. Every common man is afraid of nuclear energy and safety measures followed. But this comes as a disappointment for nuclear scientists. Prof C N R Rao, Chairman of Prime Minister's Science Advisory Council condemned the call for a moratorium on nuclear energy in India. Prof. Rao is of the opinion that there should be a review of safety parameters of all existing plants and extra care taken while setting up new plants. Nuclear Energy is going to be a landmark development for India for energy generation. Once if everything is carried out as per the proposed, it could dramatically reduce India's dependence on conventional power and further reducing as much emissions of as 70% to that of conventional power. Instead of investments huge chunks of money in nuclear energy and having Nuclear pacts and policies, we need to have something like UK's “The No Money for Nuclear movement”. Some of the cuts it already made are as below: £83 billion in cuts over the next four years £4.2 billion from the education

capital budget, a cut of 60% £4.8 billion from the communities capital budget, a cut of 74% Nuclear energy will benefit from carbon pricing and emissions trading regimes, this in spite of the fact that nuclear is not renewable, not sustainable and higher carbon than any other renewable if the full life cycle carbon is taken into account. Nuclear does not deserve any environmental subsidy. Nuclear energy is a controversial subject. If only handled with very strict regulatory measures regarding safety and maintenance, it can be a good alternative to the conventional means of energy. In India we have six nuclear power plants and 20 reactors. India is one of the top countries having more nuclear power plants. To develop industrially we need more energy no doubt. In Japan there are 55 reactors and eight of them are already closed due to disaster. Thousands of people are suffering due to the recent disaster. Do you think that all our reactors are really safe? How can a common Indian believe that the reactors are safe? In this situation, is it safe for India to depend more on Nuclear power energy in the future? More debates are yet to take place in the near future that would answer many questions lingering in the minds of many Indians.
