Addressing the forum conducted by Republican Youth th Association on Jan 26 , he cited the challenges in front of the youth of our layout to identify the basic problems of people living in the layout and finding a solution. With the aim of beautifying the city and bringing down defacement of public property, the BBMP has taken up a special drive of painting walls with pictures of historical monuments and events. The paintings reflect the State's vibrant culture. It also educates the people about keeping their environs clean. Locations with high pedestrian and vehicular movement have been chosen. The majority of the paintings are of important tourist destinations, sculptures and historical events. More than 50 painters have been identified to beautify the walls in each zone. The initiative began on August 15, and more than 40 roads have been completed so far. Yusuf Arakkal, a renowned artist, comments that while the idea behind the project is commendable, the civic authority is going about it the wrong way. “These paintings are not going to last for long. A year later, they will begin to look uglier. The BBMP does not have the funds to use the right kind of materials. Instead of painting the walls of the city with crass images, the civic authority could instead have just painted them all white and penalise those who deface the walls,” he said. He said that ideally the BBMP should have involved artists, talented art students and citizens before going ahead with the project. “It is a project that has gone all wrong,” he added.

If you visit Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus, you will find red-and-yellow cycles sailing around you. That's the initiative of the IISc campus, one which our cycling community particularly likes. Every year, outgoing students dump the cycles that they use while here...and the present students had the great idea of painting them yellow-andred, and allowing anyone to use them on the campus! If you see a red-andyellow cycle anywhere in the IISc grounds, you can use it to cycle around, or to your destination within the campus....and just leave it there. The cycles are thus scattered all over. The colouring, of course, prevents them from being taken off the campus. This creative way of dealing with both the problem of abandoned bikes, and people's transport around the campus prevents any further pollution of one of the green spaces of Bangalore.

MIND WORKS-20 SELF – LIMITING EXPRESSIONS By UK Athikkal ---------

G a n d h i a n Thoughts

sin the the e te Ha d lov er. an sinn

John is an able and sincere executive. But he wants to play a safe game whenever he undertakes to complete a task by a particular schedule.Whenever he is asked to complete a task by a particular date, his standard reply is “I shall try”. He could have instead considered various aspects of the job and accepted the responsibility by a reply, “I shall take up and complete the task”. Which one of the above two replies could have motivated him to take up the work in right earnest and engage his full capability to complete it successfully? The answer to this question is obvious. Starting an activity with an “ I shall try” attitude doesn't provide one the energy and enthusiasm required to start and execute the task satisfactorily. But the standard comment by young executives is—“By accepting the schedule I shall be liable to be questioned if the task is not executed in time.” This attitude reflects lack of faith in self and the system and readiness to take risk. During training sessions I generally demonstrate the distinction between two expressions of “trying” and “doing”. A pencil or pen is dropped on the floor. One of the participants is asked to try to pick it up. Without realizing the implication of the usage of the word “try “he may pick it up from the floor. He is then

reminded that he was not asked to pick up the item but only to try the same. Suppose you are invited by your friend to attend a particular function which you are not very keen to attend. But your modesty doesn't permit you to reply that you will not be able to participate. The standard reply on such occasion is that you will try to attend. The words that come out of you reflect your thoughts on that issue. Usually we don't think of “trying “as a state of not achieving. We often “try” to get things done and then wonder why we don't achieve them. By removing this word from your vocabulary, you become a Doer, not a Trier. You can then say you are DOING something, or are in the process of doing it; which then tells your brain that you are being proactive and succeeding in what you are doing. Good number of people has a unique and passionate idea for a business. But very few actively pursue it. That is, because most people have doubts and fears reflected by their expressions like – “ I don't know if it will work” “I don't know if I can actually do it” “I don't want to take the risk and find out the hard way” “I don't know where to start” “I don't have the skills”. From the above examples one can conclude that our internal dialogues and expressions go a long way in deciding whether they help to make or mar the fulfillment of our dreams in life.

One of the greatest men in the history of India is unarguably Mahatma Gandhi. His pacifist philosophy brought one of the world's great powers to its knees. He proved that violence is not the only road to change. The way he gave shape and character to India's freedom struggle is worthy of a standing ovation. Trace his rise to power and fearless campaign of truth, non-violence and noncooperation with injustice that

defeated the British Empire in the documentary Mahatma Gandhi – Pilgrim of Peace which runs for 45 minutes. Biographers offer insight into his surprising personal life, while historians explore his remarkable accomplishments. Hear from his grandson, Arun Gandhi, and, in a rare interview, the Dalai Lama reflects on Gandhi's incredible life and enduring legacy.

SHORT STORY - Part 2

Kaun Banega Leader By K. Kalyan

---------Ramaji's son and family took a real financial lift because of his grandson Ramana who made his fortune as a software engineer. All those years of Ramaji yielded him nothing great besides becoming a family man to enter into the new century. Many of his colleagues who often praised him for his active participation in freedom struggle are now dead and gone. A letter written to him personally by Mr. M.K. Gandhi, the father of our nation, still lives in his cupboard almost for more than half a century. Ramaji showed it to people umpteen times but he is the one who read it many a times. Folding and unfolding made the letter more th dilapidated. While studying in 10

NOVICE COOK Mor Rasam Ingredients Tomato - 1 (chopped) Turmeric powder - 1 tsp Rasam Powder - 1 tsp Salt to taste Watery Buttermilk - 1 cup Oil - 2 tsp Mustard seeds - 1 tsp Fenugreek seeds - 5 Curry leaves - few Asafoetida powder - pinch

Jan 31 - Feb 06, 2010 standard, Ramana intelligently photocopied the letter, framed it and hung it on the wall saying, “Grandpa, show it on the wall and let them read if interested.” It was a courageous move by a young student and Ramaji started liking Ramana. Before considering him as an engineer, he is a pretty good human being with all the will and courage to make headway in life and career. He is a witty character with the make of religion, morality, truth and sincerity ingrained. Above all, he is intelligent enough to identify and accept the amount of righteousness prevailing in the world he is living. He is not a mere techie who subdued his intellect to the unorthodox culture predominant among the modern generation. He patiently listens to his grandfather and analyses later to discover meaning in them.

Hockey World Cup: What is in Store for India? India: As the world's 12 top nations get ready to converge in the Indian capital next month, the question asked is: Will the Indians be able to produce their best at home? The Indians seem to have lost the skills to synthetic turf and are struggling to adjust to the skills of speed hockey, invariably not being able to last out 70 minutes. India last hosted the World Cup 28 years ago in Mumbai. After winning the World Cup in 1975 in Kuala Lumpur, India were expected to do much better than they did.
