LAYOUT TALK Memorable Events In 2010, the date of the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda is on January 6 as per traditional Hindu calendar. According to the English calendar or the generally used Indian Calendar, Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863.His concluding address in Chicago, Sept 27, 1893 can never be forgotten. The following extract is worth reading often: “Much has been said of the common ground of religious unity. I am not going just now to venture my own theory. But if any one here hopes that this unity will come by the triumph of any one of the religions and the destruction of the others, to him I say, "Brother, yours is an impossible hope." Do I wish that the Christian would become Hindu? God forbid. Do I wish that the Hindu or Buddhist would become Christian? God forbid.

Swami Vivekananda in Chicago, Sept 27, 1893
The seed is put in the ground, and earth and air and water are placed around it. Does the seed become the earth, or the air, or the water? No. It becomes a plant. It develops after the law of its own growth, assimilates the air, the earth, and the water, converts them into plant substance, and grows into a plant. Similar is the case with religion. The Christian is not to become a Hindu or a Buddhist, nor a Hindu or a Buddhist to become a Christian. But each must assimilate the spirit of the others and yet preserve his individuality and grow according to his own law of growth. If the Parliament of Religions has shown anything to the world, it is this: It has proved to the world that holiness, purity and charity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world, and that every system has produced men and women of the most exalted character. In the face of this evidence, if anybody dreams of the exclusive survival of his own religion and the destruction of the others, I pity him from the bottom of my heart, and point out to him that upon the banner of every religion will soon be written in spite of resistance: "Help and not fight," "Assimilation and not Destruction," "Harmony and Peace and not Dissension."

MIND WORKS-15 Transforming Self By Prof UK Athikkal ---------
When we look around and observe carefully, it can be noticed that every one of us spends our precious time and energy in trying to change behavioural pattern of other people whether it fetches desired result or not. Whether at home, at the work place or at the public place we get in the habit of observing others in a judgemental mode. Then, we tend to arrive at our own conclusions and start providing our suggestion and ideas whether it is desired by the other or not. In our preoccupation to change others and change the world we often forget to think of self and make efforts to bring positive changes within self. “What is the meaning I am attaching to events and situations?” “How far my core beliefs and value systems influence in forming these perceptual patterns?” Is there any need for me to self- introspect and assess my own thoughts and feelings?” Such questions and self-talks help us to look inward and initiate self change. For this effort to be successful, one needs to cultivate open ness in their approach and attitude. Start seeing issues and situations in three different positions. First position from the
point of view of “Self”, the Second position from the point of view the “Other” person and the Third position from the point of view of a “Neutral ”or “Observer” position. The more fully and completely we can do that, the more we will enhance our own ability to maintain a resourceful thinking process. As we use these processes, we will increase our mental flexibility and hence the ability to deal powerfully and positively, a variety of people and situations. How do we take the other person's (Second person) point of view? In order to understand this process clearly we need to realise what happens when we take “Self” position? The mind operates in it's own body, operates on it's own belief systems, values and experience. Now similarly if one can get into the other person's backgrounds, belief systems and values in their imagination, they can easily get into their perspective of the situation. Similar is the process to get in the third position perspective. The above process of getting in to different perspective positions helps us to understand and appreciate other's point of view. This is a very useful process when we need to negotiate personal or business issues or resolve serious conflicts. This is part of the leadership resources and awareness of these skills and practice of these thought processes enable us to lead a richer and resourceful life.

Novel Holmes for the Modern Age
PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Sherlock Holmes movie is an adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective character. In this adaptation, the Arthur Conan Doyle character is turned into a slightly crazed superhero, an autistic detective savant, in an action movie. Robert Downey, Jr. who plays the lead role has given a commendable performance. This movie is all about action and adventure. Jude Law portrays the role of Sherlock Holmes' stalwart partner, Dr. Watson. The movie starts with the intervention of the famous detective and his companion in a human sacrifice ritual conducted by
Lord Blackwood played by Mark Strong. The entire plot is based upon an interesting adventurous ride which involves three of these characters. A first-rate action adventure movie that provides a near perfect example of how to redress an aging genre franchise for a new audience. Sherlock Holmes is a solid, enjoyable film with a fun score, a great use of sound and environment, and a trio of confederates you will want to know more of. Religion is the manifestation of the divinity already in man. Swamy Vivekananda

Health Champagne to Keep your Heart Fit!! Drinking two glasses of champagne a day is good for yo u r h e a r t a n d b l o o d circulation. Champagne increases the availability of nitric oxide, a molecule which controls blood pressure. It is able to induce these effects because it contains polyphenols, plant chemicals from the red grapes and w h i t e g ra p e s u s e d i n champagne production. When you drink champagne,

these polyphenols get absorbed into the blood stream where they are able to act on the vascular (circulatory) system. Specifically, they appear to slow down the natural removal of nitric oxide from our blood, meaning that it will have a longer time to act on blood vessels and so improve the flow of blood around the body. High nitric oxide levels in the blood, as a result of drinking champagne, can have beneficial effects, because as well as increasing blood flow, it may help decrease both blood pressure and the likelihood of blood clots forming, said a Reading varsity release.
