A Little of Buddha and an Ocean of Hope Darima Daribazaron

Domlur: In modern India, humans distance away from the ethical discipline, compassion and sublime wisdom, and more so from the teachings of Buddha. Buddhism contributed significantly to other religions especially to Hinduism. The founder of Buddhism, Buddha meaning 'enlightened' founded Buddhism in the 550 BC with noble thoughts and principles. Hinduism was quick to absorb the essentials of Buddhism and grew naturally. In other words, it is correct to say Buddhism replenished Hinduism with its lapses during its long journey. On May 27 Buddhists all over the world will celebrate Buddha Jayanthi, or

Buddha Purnima, or Saka Dawa in Tibetan - the day that commemorates Lord Buddha's birth, Enlightenment and Parinirvana is one of the most important Buddhist festivals, reminding people of the abovementioned principles that can free one from life's dukha and lead to ever lasting happiness and peace. Being a good doctor is more than academic excellence AECS Layout: When claims and complaints against doctors in general are growing in many places, Dr. Gopala Krishnan of Aayug's Multi Speciality Clinic (AECS Layout) has earned the trust of patients. His success can be ascribed to skilful diagnosis, understanding his limitation and referring patients to the right super specialist. Being a good doctor is more than academic excellence. His right attitude, aptitude, character, commitment, demeanor and above all, a heart of service has moved him to his newly constructed building. His dream of a full fledged hospital with more facilities and medical equipments is not far away. “It would happen in an year's time.” says Dr. Gopala Krishnan with confidence. Many doctors prefer to be a super specialist. There is a paucity of talented general physicians to serve the huge population of our country. Dr. Gopala Krishnan is of the opinion that frequent power cuts are real hindrances. Big hospitals bear the brunt of power cuts. Patients' meals are delayed, the quality of drugs such as insulin and

immunisation agents that need temperatures maintained at certain levels is being compromised. With regard to security in AECS Layout Dr. Gopala Krishnan says people are vulnerable to all sorts of thefts including chain snatching. “I have seen chain snatching with my own eyes in the layout.” says the doctor. He suggests for more private security men in the layout to prevent any mishaps. It is possible only if the people of layout united. Presently, the people in the layout are not united in their thoughts and opinions thereby giving room for miscreants to enter. We must take steps on our own instead of believing our government .

Established in 2001 by Mr. Tulsi Ram Reddy, a retired Revenue inspector BBMP, this holy spot has a temple for Lord Shanishwara and one for Lord Hanuman. The statue of Lord Hanuman is carved out of a single huge stone (Ekashila), the tallest in India measuring 29 feet. “This statue is even bigger than Lord Anjaneya in Namakkal.” says Mr. Tulsi Ram. Another unique aspect of this

temple is the Navagraha idols, each of which is made of large stones along with their consorts. There is enough space even to perform pradhakshina around each one of the navagrahas. An idol of Annapoorneshwari has also been installed in the premises. Every Saturday the temple if found with full of devotees and Annadhanam takes place on a large

Justice Endorses Presence of Corruption Bangalore: Karnataka Lok Ayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde says that corruption is widespread in all professions. According to his experience, corruption is not confined to bureaucracy and politics alone but has spread its wings to all professions. He said, people spend Rs 15 Crore to Rs 20 crore for getting elected to the Lok Sabha, and Rs five crore to Rs 10 crore to become a legislator. Justice Hegde regretted that despite implementation of the latest pay commission and increasing the

salaries of bureaucrats, considerably, corruption has not been removed and in the medical profession also, the ''human aspect'' was missing. ''In my 60 years in the profession, I have understood that corruption is an incurable disease. The main cause is the society which fails to differentiate between wealth accumulated by one legitimately or illegally. We should teach a lesson to those who are corrupt, by ostracizing them,'' he added.

Bangalore: A couple of months before people from some areas of Bangalore yelled, “Two hours of power cut throws life into jeopardy.” Many disliked unscheduled power cuts then. Presently what is wrong with BESCOM? The days of the virtual blackout seems to be back to in the city. With the corporation election that just got over, unscheduled power cuts seem to haunt Bangaloreans to the core. To make it worse, the rising humidity is also making life tougher. Many people comment, “No current, no water, day by day the condition is getting worse and in-spite of that, the government boast themselves that they are successful in developmental works.” The concerned departments in the government blames on sub standard irrigation pumpsets (IP) and lack of metering which made it difficult to account for the amount of energy being consumed. According to reliable sources, it would take five years before the supply could actually meet the demand. The government is making only short term arrangements. So will this frequent power cut problem persist?

MIND WORKS-35 Attitudes: Evaluating the Social World By UK Athikkal

-----------

Attitudes are enduring evaluations of several aspects of the social world. And such evaluations are stored in our memory. Attitudes are learned through experience or through social learning from other persons. And also attitudes are formed through social comparison- a process by which we compare with ourselves, others. According to research studies, genetic factors also play a role in the formation of attitudes. There is growing evidence that attitudes do indeed influence behavior. Several factors tend to influence the strength of the attitude behavior link. These include (a) Aspects of the situation, like the use of social norms and time pressure; (b) Aspects of attitudes themselves , like their strengths, importance and accessibility; and (c) Aspects of individuals such as self monitoring. Attitudes seem to guide behavior through two significant ways- through careful thought when there is enough time; and through an automatic manner when we are in a hurry. Individuals experience cognitive dissonance when they notice inconsistency between their attitudes and their behavior. Dissonance is the feeling of discomfort and when people get into dissonance they are motivated to reduce it and this is done by several ways – by changing the attitudes in question; by acquiring information in support of the behavior; by means of trivialization –

May 23 - 29, 2010 downplaying the importance of the attitude or the behavior. Research studies point out that dissonance is an unpleasant state. When people have fewer good reasons for engaging in attitude discrepant behavior, they then get into greater dissonance and this in turn would exert stronger pressure for attitude change. Further, it appears that it is not necessary for persons to engage in attitude – discrepant behavior, for such effects to occur. On the contrary, merely by reminding people of certain attitudes that one holds and his or her own failure to live up those attitudes can be helpful. In short, we can change our own attitudes, by saying or doing things that we believe; and likewise by not saying or doing things that we do not believe in. These changes will positively affect the total personality of a person and would take him or her in the path of a better and purposeful life. A Little of Buddha and an Ocean of Hope (Cont. from page. 1)

In Tibet, 'the Land of Snow' as it was known in the ancient India, the teachings of the Buddha were preserved in their entirety and elaborated upon over the centuries by meditators and scholars. In the wake of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political head of Tibet, fleeing to India in 1959, the teachings of the Buddha have reemerged in India and gained significant popularity in the West. Following the footsteps of the Dalai Lama tens of thousands of Tibetans came to India during the past 50 years. Karnataka has a significant Tibetan refugee population with the biggest settlements near Mysore, Mongud, Kollegal and Hunsur. In each of the settlements refugees rebuilt monastic universities, the seats of the sacred knowledge – Sera Monastic University near Mysore, Drepung near Mongud, Gyume college near Kollegal, to name a few. At the request of His Holiness the Dalai Lama a Buddhist Meditation & Study Centre was established in Bangalore in 2003. The name of the Centre – Choe Khor Sum Ling – means 'Three Turnings of the Wheel of

Dharma' referring to the most significant teachings of Buddha Shakymuni. The Centre is meant for the study and practice of the Buddhism: regular classes on the Buddhist philosophy, various meditation techniques, guided meditation sessions as well as meditation retreats away from hustle and bustle of Bangalore are conducted by English-speaking monks from Sera Jey Monastic University. They are attended by those who are attracted to the clear-cut logic and humanity of the teachings - Indians, Tibetan students and foreigners, whose population is significant in Bangalore. Cultural events like Tibetan Film Festivals are organized in collaboration with the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of HH the Dalai Lama based in New Delhi. The Centre also organizes group tours to the pilgrimage sites. To remind people, Buddhism did not face execution from the native land. On the other hand India is proud that it has Hinduism as its major religion comprising significant contribution from Buddhism. India is also proud for giving the world a major religion Buddhism. Today countries like Japan, China, Thailand, etc. follow Buddhism.
