It's Just a Walking Distance to Realise - World Sight Day 2009
Kundalahalli: Sankara Eye Hospital, Bangalore, in association with Rotary International District 3190 and Sightsavers International, organised a walkathon at Cubbon Park on October 8, 2009. This is to bring into focus the issue of gender inequity in access to eye care. Of the 45 million cases of blindness reported globally, 67% of this population comprises of women and girls. Fortunately, 80% of blindness is either avoidable or preventable and simple, corrective measures such as ensuring that women account for at least 65% of all cataract surgeries can help drastically reduce this number. Mr. S Nagendra, District Governor, Rotary International District 3190, and J Crasta, President, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce & Industry also participated. Many men walked blindfolded to show the importance of participation of both sexes in resolving this issue. This is a story of Easter island which is situated about 3000 km away from South America. It is named so as it was discovered on a Easter Sunday of 1722. It is only 50 square km in area. The interesting aspect of this island is the presence of mysterious giant stone statues called Moai 37 feet tall weighing upto 85 tons which are found all over the coastal area of the island. The original inhabitants were of Polynesian stock who came there as early as 318 AD. When they arrived, the island was richly covered with thick forest and had a variety of fauna. Because of plenty of food sources the population grew rapidly and gave rise to a great religious culture. Soon the resources dwindled and could not keep pace with the growing population. The island could not sustain itself. The tribal inhabitants used the forest trees as fuel for construction of houses, boats and as rollers for transporting the great stone statues. By 1400s the forests were lost and the rich soil eroded. Dolphins disappeared, and they began eating birds and then lizards. The birds disappeared. Famine hit the inhabitants and soon chaos reigned . They could not escape as they did not have wood to make boats and capture fish. Rival clans fought each other and the population dropped drastically and a complete civilization soon perished. The once thick forest is today barren, and thus within centuries the islanders by their way of life destroyed the island. This story is a metaphor of how a civilized society should not behave if it wants to sustain for ever. But alas! No one knows whether mankind will ever learn a lesson from this story or from any of the umpteen stories and facts staring openly at the face today.

India: When Buddhism was spread to China in the first century, many Indian scholars and monks travelled to China. India and China had relatively little political contact before the 1950s. The Hindi-Chini bhai-bhai slogan was prolific. Until 1959, despite border skirmishes and discrepancies between Indian and Chinese maps, Chinese leaders amicably had assured India that there was no territorial controversy on the border though there is some evidence that India avoided bringing up the border issue in high level meetings. Despite lingering suspicions remaining from the 1962 Sino-Indian War and continuing boundary disputes over Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh, Sino-Indian relations have improved gradually since 1988. Both countries have sought to reduce tensions along the frontier, expand trade and cultural ties, and normalize relations. Since 2007, relations between India and China remained cool. But there is now a developing hysteria about our heading for war with China, or more precisely, about China planning to attack India. As Pakistan has tense relations with India, Kashmir's state of unrest serves as a natural ally to China. The reason for the tarnished relationship between India and China is India's focus on domestic political survival rather than its national interests. India develops a strategic relationship with the United States and at present China does not like the actions of U.S in South Asia. By now India should have been able to match Chinese military capacity by spending more per cent of GDP on defence and be firm in policy, attitude, and words. India fails to take full care of national security and work for peace and good neighbourliness.
Each well-grown tree yields 15 to 30 Kg nutlets equivalent to 2.5-5 Kg oil. The oil is largely used in the preparation of bakery products in Central America. In India too it can be used in the manufacture of vanaspati, vegetable oil and/or margarine. The oil is free from bad cholesterol. It can be also used for industrial purposes in the manufacture of biofuels, soaps, detergents, lubricants, varnishes, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals etc. The oilcake being rich in nitrogen (8%), phosphorus (1.1%) and potash (1.2%), is good organic manure. The shells can be used in the manufacture of particle board, activated charcoal or as fuel.路The fruit pulp, rich in sugars (about 11%) can be used in the preparation of beverages. The pulp along with leaf litter can be economically used in the manufacture of Vermicompost. The bark and leaves are medicinally important. The wood is generally insect resistant and is used in the preparation of quality furniture, toys, in match industry, as pulp (in paper making). MIND WORKS – 5 What Happens when We Think in Negative Terms? By Prof UK Athikkal -----Worrisome thoughts- What do we attempt to do when we are in a state of worry? We are in fact creating images of negative happenings such as failures, sickness, missed opportunities, etc. Repeated thoughts of worry create repeated images,sounds and feelings of such negative happenings in our mind. This results in reinforcements of such impressions in our subconscious mind. We need to bear in mind that subconscious cannot identify positives and negatives separately. Images created in the mind, whether it is intended for fulfilment or otherwise are treated in similar manner. The process tries to get those situations manifested in real life. For example, when a person X worries about falling ill due to an attack of swine flu, images of such state of illness are created in her mind. The more one worries on this possible situation, such imaginary imprints get reinforced. Since our mind and body are m u t u a l l y s u p p o r t i ve , t h e b o d y cooperates with the mind and tends to assist the onset of swine flu for the person. Now let us take the case of another person Y who firmly believes that her body is immune to swine flu, those positive thoughts and corresponding i m a g e s g e t r e i n f o r c e d i n h e r. Correspondingly her body is capable of offering more resistance to the attack of swine flu. Hence the chances of falling ill due to swine flu for this positive oriented person is far less than for the person who is negatively oriented of her health.

We therefore need to monitor the nature of our thoughts on a daily or hourly basis. The moment we realize that we are under a negative spell, make a conscious decision to change the nature of thoughts to a positive one. Create positive images of the happenings you desire to bring about. Resist from discussing situations that can create negative orientation in our flow of thoughts. Create a group of friends who can help each other in this regard to create positive energy around us. We need to be fully aware of the benefits that can be derived from such process in our daily lives.

What is BT brinjal? Bt brinjal is a transgenic brinjal variety created out of inserting a gene (Cry 1Ac) from the soil bacteria Bacillus Thuringiensis in Brinjal. This is said to provide the plant resistance against the fruit and borer disease affecting it. According the Mahyco, a subsidiary of Monsanto, the company which is going to sell Bt brinjal, millions of farmers would be benefited and the fears of human health being affected is unfounded as per their research. The Union and Environment Ministry has given a green signal despite the fact that 3 members of the genetic engineering approval committee have voiced their dissent. But environmentalists, homeopaths, scientists are all against the Bt brinjal crop. Homeopaths say that the genetic modification would bring in new mutation thus destroying the natural gene pool from where they obtain their medicines. They say it nullifies the principle of homeopathy. Eminent scientists report the death of cattle and goats in the region of Bt cotton cultivation. Caen university has branded Bt brinjal unsafe for human consumption. The tests on mice have proved that they suffered sterility, high infant mortality, stunted growth, stomach and intestinal lesion, liver and kidney damage, organ damage at cellular level and internal bleeding. In India, cattle fed on Bt cotton fodder and oil cakes have suffered infertility, reduced milk yield, bloody dysentery, excessive salivation, bloated stomach and have also died painful deaths. Ex health minister Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss publicly protested the introduction of Gm crops after going through the research findings available to him. The farmers of All India Kisan Sabha fear that the seeds and therefore Indian agriculture, would come under the control of the MNC companies who might later charge exhorbitantly to sell them to the farmers.

Novice Cook - Kancheepuram idli Ingredients 3 cups Boiled rice ¾ cup urad dhal 1 teaspoon pepper ½ teaspoon cumin seeds Little asafoetida 4 green chillies ½ bunch coriander leaves 1 cup grated coconut ¼ teaspoon ginger paste Oil /ghee-50 grams Salt to taste
Procedure Soak Rice and urad dhal, grind them separately and mix them after adding salt to taste. Allow the batter to ferment overnight. Add pepper powder, cumin seeds, asafoetida, cut green chillies and coriander leaves in the morning. Add grated coconut, Ghee/oil to the batter and mix well. Steam in the idli mould for ten minutes and serve hot with coconut chutney.
SCRIPTURE Rangoli- The Art of Floor Decoration Rangoli is one of the earliest evidences of painting in India. The earliest record of rangolis, are in the puranas and has been referred to as one of the 64 arts. According to a legend which is recorded in a treatise called Chitra Lakshana, a king and his kingdom were in deep sorrow due the demise of the death of the high priest's son. Everybody prayed to Lord Brahma for his life. Lord Brahma was so moved by the prayers that he asked the king to paint a portrait of the boy on the floor, so that he could bring back life into the boy. The king did likewise and Brahma breathed life into the boy and the boy regained his life filling joy in the kingdom. And thus came into life the art of floor painting. Art in India is a form of worship. It is a practice and part of the spiritual process. Day does not begin for many Indians without Rangoli in the entrance of their houses. It is a way of welcoming goddess Lakshmi. During Diwali in Gujarat any of the 1001 variations of Lotus is drawn along with motifs of swastika and conch shells depicting and welcoming Goddess Lakshmi. from rice flour as rice was the sign of prosperity. Turmeric was used to draw outlines, along with earth and vegetable dyes on a floor hardened with cow dung. Today templates of designs are also used with cylindrical instruments called kuzlal in south India. In the modern day as floors changed materials have also changed to zinc oxide and paints but not the tradition.
Diwali and Pollution Last year in Gurgaon and Delhi people burst less crackers. Sources said that when the pollution level was checked it was lesser than the pollution in 2007. The suspended particulate matter was 832 microgram per metrecube as compared to 978. The level of sulphur dioxide also was down from 49 to 36 and nitrogen oxide from 77 to 67. Sound pollution had also decreased. These facts show that the future is not so bleak. There are the gen-next eco kids. Some children from Mumbai last year campaigned against crackers. They said “The adults don't get it, they are spoiling our future”. Some of the best quotes of children are “Burning crackers burn money”. “Burning crackers burn India”. They also stressed the point that it increases child labour. One child said he has seen his father who is an asthmatic patient suffer more during Diwali. Another child described about how his dog could not bear the sound from the crackers. They said “Teach the parents. Make them aware of the damage they cause to the environment”. The doctors also complain about the increased casualties during Diwali. At a time when the world is in the grip of one calamity after another, and when many companies are spending crores investing in green technology and world leaders are bargaining hard over who should reduce global warming, each patriotic Indian should, with equal enthusiasm take positive steps towards life in the same way we cheer for the Indian cricket team.
