Fooling All the People All the Time! Domlur: People in India have begun living with corruption as if it is a normal practice. Not that they do not resent it but seem to feel that when the topmost leaders are part of it, they know there is probably no remedy. Mr Kuldip Nayar took part in the workshop to talk on 'Is Indian Democracy in Danger?' at the Bangalore International Centre. Kuldip Nayar is a veteran Indian journalist, syndicated columnist, human right activist and author, noted for his long career as a leftwing political commentator. He was also nominated as a Member of the upper house of the Indian Parliament in 1997. India has been astir because one scam after another has tumbled out of government's cupboard. The democratic system and relatively free media in the country have instilled confidence among neighbouring nations that once the bandwagon rolls out from Delhi, they too would be able to jump into it, without losing their entity, to fight against corruption in their own states.
The Lokpal bill has been meeting the same fate for the last 42 years. The governments, mostly those of the Congress, have found one pretext or the other to see that there is no legislation which may force rulers or their cohorts face justice. Even when the Lok Sabha had passed the bill and the Standing Committee of Parliament discussed it, the government blinked and had the house adjourned on the other pretexts. This time it was the same drama but with a little more twist added to the script. Jaitley, who was a vociferous opponent so far, too went along with the government. So did the BJP. Festive Season to Push up Demand for Essential Commodities B angalore: Pr ices of essential commodities like sugar, edible oil, milk and its products may see a sharp rise at the retail level in the ensuing festive season because of a combination of factors, mainly including shortfall in rains in many parts of the country, an ASSOCHAM study forecasts. Consumers are likely to feel the pinch of rising food prices in the upcoming festive season, as shortage of
rainfall in growing areas with high demand could push up prices further. In the 2012-13, sugar production is expected to be lower at around 25 million tonnes as Maharashtra and Karnataka have received very less rains so far this year.
