igeret k’tana Shalom Kehilla, It is examination season in the Secondary School. Years 11 and 12 are undertaking examinations this week and Years 9 and 10 have theirs next week. Examinations are important as they are snapshot tests of skills and knowledge. Whilst not all of the examinations contribute to the VCE scores, just as athletes train and practise for their final races, so must we train and practise for examinations. Whilst it is traditional to wish students ‘good luck’ in examinations, when I met parents in September I reflected on the idea that ‘luck’ is very often where preparation meets opportunity. At Bialik, students have the opportunity to benefit from great teaching in a superb environment, supported by caring parents. When it comes to examinations, success is achieved by matching this opportunity with preparation. One way that parents can help is ensuring that there is a quiet and tidy space at home, away from the distractions of television, phones, games and social networking sites. We hosted a superb Continuing the Journey evening for our Kinder 4 parents, giving a taster of what is in store in Prep and suggesting some activities at home to continue the Jewish and curricular journeys of our children. Marc Light gave some tips for fostering a love of reading, which included enshrining ‘snuggle time’ every night to read, making the word ‘book’ as celebratory as the word ‘birthday’, and having a ‘turn my phone off’ ritual so that our children see how important reading time is for mums and dads. Meanwhile, to those older students taking examinations, I wish them good luck (in all of the meanings of the phrase)! B’Shalom, Jeremy Stowe-Lindner Principal

Everybody enjoyed the special day.

All donations are gratefully received and every dollar counts. For donations over $360, you can inscribe a leaf on Bialik’s Tree of Giving with the wording of your choice (this can also be done as a lovely gift to commemorate a special occasion or person). igeret k’tana Middle & Senior Schools Middle and Senior School students were intrigued to hear the story of Pawel Bramson, who visited Bialik to share his story of transforming from a right-wing antisemitic skinhead to a Chassidic Jew working as a kashrut supervisor in Warsaw. Students from both the Year 11 Religion and Society class as well as Year 7 and 8 classes, were eager to ask interesting and probing questions about Pawel’s remarkable life transformation. From all accounts, this was a powerful and moving story that carried his pertinent message in a thick Polish accent - “It is never too late to become a better person”.
