In this research, the evolution of Eleusis from the creation of the first industry in the region, in 1875, to the first two decades of the 21st century is examined. During this period of about 150 years the character of the city changed drastically as it was transformed from a minor village into one of the largest industrial areas of Greece.
Initially, a process of industrialization of the coastal front and its outskirts took place, until the 1970s. From that point onwards, a process of de-industrialization began, mainly of the urban fabric of Eleusis. It is then analyzed how these two conflicting processes influenced the city and illuminates the footprint they left. The area continues to grow industrially, now only on the outskirts, leaving major urban gaps in the city, due to the abandonment of old factory sites.
The purpose of this research work is to draw conclusions about how Eleusis could highlight her historical wealth and at the same time serve the modern needs of the inhabitants.
