editors note
Hello to you readers and picture perusers. I am excited to introduce the new edition of our magazine. I firstly have to apologise to my Nana for the rude words on the front cover, sorry Nana. When we had a team meeting for this edition we were talking about how boring magazine content can be and we thought we should try to do things a little differently, poke fun at the monied megalomaniac fashion mags, so with that in mind, we have done it our way. Flick through to find our own restaurant reviews, namely the three local chicken shops. We don’t usually run adverts but in this edition we have made exceptions and my my my who wouldn’t want what is advertised within these pages and much more. Enjoy it, hope you like it, if not, well……never mind. Gemma Shiel Lazy Oaf Creator, Director and Designer.

PIZZAS BY THE SLICE AND MARGARITAS ON THE ICE
D O O Photography : Alec McLeish
16
OPENING IN NOVEMBER 2012, DALSTON’S VOODOO RAY’S PIZZA PLACE HAVE TAKEN LONDON BY STORM SERVING UP PIZZA-BY-THE-SLICE TO CROWDS OF HUNGRY CUSTOMERS INTO THE EARLY HOURS. INSPIRED BY THE SLICE CULTURE IN NEW YORK, THEY DISH UP AN ARRAY OF DELICIOUS PIZZA TOPPINGS COMPLIMENTED WITH DIPS, DESSERTS AND FROZEN MARGARITAS. WE TRAVELED TO THEIR KINGSLAND HIGH ST. RESIDENCE TO HANGOUT WITH CO-OWNERS DAN BEAUMOUNT AND MATT TUCKER AND GENERAL MANAGER ELLA ROBERTSON TO TALK PIZZA TOURS AND CHEESE WARS.
17
So which of you guys wears the pizza pants around here? Dan: Ella! She keeps this place running, we just come in hang out and eat pizza. Where did Voodoo Rays come from and why did you set it up? Dan: We opened in November last year. Ella: But it’s been in your brain for a lot longer than that! Dan: It was an idea that evolved over time between us; me, Matt and the other Dan. Matt: The other Dan (who couldn’t make the interview) initially came up with the idea, which we thought was a bit ridiculous but once we started to think about it a bit more, we began to think no, this is actually an amazing idea. We went out to New York and spent some time out there researching and eating a stupid amount of pizza!
02 : BOLLOCKSTE
We just went to New York and we couldn’t get enough of the slice culture. One slice - one dollar it’s perfect! D: I think the real tipping point was when we went to New York and immersed ourselves in the slice culture realising how far you could go with quality, originality, combinations and the service. We met a guy called Scott Weiner out there who runs a blog called Scotts Pizza Tours so he gave us a private pizza tour, which completely opened our eyes to the possibilities of pizza. M: He’s like our pizza guru, basically. D: When we got back we had a pizza epiphany and set the wheels in motion, showing that you can take such a simple idea; dough, sauce, cheese and toppings and specialise it as far as you’re willing to go. Yeah that’s why we love you guys! We love pizza and we love trying all the new flavours and toppings. D: I think pizza is the perfect vessel for experimenting with flavour combinations. E: Yeah, we did a banana and bacon slice!
We know that feeling!
D: Did we?
M: We do a slice called the Full Moon Slice which we only serve after midnight; it has bacon dust and Japanese mayo. It’s nice when people come in early in the evening and they really want it.
E: For a bit, it was hit and miss, but you have bacon and banana pancakes, it’s not that weird. When you opened was there a learning curve for your customers with the by-the-slice service? M: I think it’s taken a while for people to get their heads around it; they can just come in late at night and grab a slice and go. A little bit like getting a kebab on your way home. E: But much higher quality! D: Yeah it was a learning curve for us too but I feel like we’ve met each other half way. They’ve learnt how to make the most of us. Yeah once you go slice you can’t go back! You must have some pretty regular customers now? D: We have some pretty regular two-slice customers that you’ll maybe see at the beginning of a Saturday night. They got their hair did, they’re all looking nice getting something to eat before they go out. E: But then we see them again at 2am not looking so nice. We call it the pizza sandwich – pizza, party, pizza.
What’s your fantasy topping combo? D: Roland 909 Drum Machine Pizza. A drum machine pizza, some slow roast 808’s and a little bit of deep fried 909. M: Don’t forget some cheesy synth. We’re guessing you guys are pretty big on music, we’re liking the Guy Called Gerald reference in the name! M: Thanks, we actually emailed him telling him we named our pizza place after his song. He’s come to visit a few times he even signed our light switch! D: Yeah and downstairs we’ve got the club, Dance Tunnel. E: It’s great - you dance, you come upstairs, eat some pizza and we send you back down to dance again. D: Carbs and cardio basically. E: Maybe some frozen margaritas too!
18
voodoo rayse
Can we get any previews of new combos you’re working on? M: Our chef’s been working on a salt beef slice. D: Yeah and the pulled pork one. E: And a dessert slice, the sweetzza. D: I just want to say we’re really lucky with our kitchen team. They’re amazing. The kitchen is like the Voodoo Ray’s engine room and they’re always at full throttle. E: We pretty much hire a bunch of pizza fanatics. Did it take a long time to track down all these pizza freaks? E: Before we opened I interviewed over one hundred people for the ten positions we had to fill. These guys thought I was crazy, but we’ve still got all the original line up. Lazy Oaf are deffo pizza freaks, we once sang Call Me Maybe to a pizza boy in New Orleans at 2am, have you ever experienced any crazy pizza behavior from staying open so late? E: Well our entire staff each have some fans, at least one. There is one girl she has a lot. D: She get’s serenaded on a nightly basis. Being open till 3am it does get pretty musical in here sometimes. E: I do have to be a little bit mumsy sometimes in here, keeping people off the tables and out of trouble. One night we put on Common People by Pulp and a girl got on the table and did an amazing dance routine! When she finished the whole place erupted with applause. Quick fire time! Which cheese would win a fight, mozzarella or parmesan? D: Parmesan is harder!
Pepperoni or salami? D: What’s the difference? E: Ask the chef? Chef: Pepperoni is a type of salami. Salami refers to all the air cured sausage meats. Stingray or Thunderbirds? Dan and Ella: Thunderbirds! Stingray or Toadfish? Dan and Ella: *look confused* From Neighbours…? D: Was there a Stingray in Neighbours? Wasn’t he called Stonefish? E: What is neighbours?

M: I was a jock, like totally stacked and I had all the girlfriends; guys were scared of me and teachers kissed my butt. It was awesome almost like a twisted dream...I was actually just really awkward.
M: People only like me for playing music, but no one would come say hi to me unless they have seen me play before. What animal wouldn’t you want to get into a fight with? A: A liger or a bear. M: Yeah a lion or any big cats! At school were you a teachers pet, class clown or that rebel who hangs behind the bike sheds?
Mikaiah: I play music with my brother in a rock band, we love art and making things. Anaiah: I drum in our band!
A: I was just the weird kid, really eccentric.
What is your worst habit?
Have you ever got yourself into big trouble?
A: Sometimes leg shaking or chewing with my mouth open.
A: I once got taken home in handcuffs for knocking over a temporary fence with a forklift, although that was left at that.
M: I find myself forgetting how to do stuff; I need to stay on top of my things. Just life in general…
And what did you do to get yourself out of trouble?
What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?
A: I did the right thing and admitted to it, although the police were being total jerks and overusing their power, losers.
M: Unfortunately I’ve done a few dangerous things in my life so far,;one of them would be jumping into crowds and stage diving.
Tell us a secret... M: I like mangos a lot.
A: I did a giant stage dive at a French festival, and I mean it was huge, you know how big festival barriers are?
A: I sometimes dance in my room by myself.
What skills would a girl have to impress you? M: Pretzels.

A: If they had extensive knowledge about Star Wars and the extended galaxy.

Mikaiah Lei, 20, and Anaiah Lei, 16, are two brothers from Los Angeles who come together to play music as part of their band The Bots. With Mikaiah on lead vocals and guitars and Anaiah on drums, the boys have been writing, recording and performing fastpaced rock music for over four years running around playing concerts and festivals worldwide. Lazy Oaf were lucky enough to catch up with the boys on the UK leg of their tour and we are excited to have them as the face of our Winter Men’s Lookbook. We teamed up with mutual friend and photographer Dan Wilton who documented a day in the life of The Bots eating pizza, playing video games, skateboarding and doing all the things young fun chaps like to do on their day off.

Tennesse Chicken This is the spot. Went here nearly every day for 3 months when I was interning. It’s crispy and pretty cheap, plus they’ve got nice indoor seats for taking a (cheap) date.

4 wings outta 5
Chicken Cottage These we’re okay. Not too greasy but not crispy or spicy enough for me. But they’ve got the best chicken logo by far. 3 wings outta 5
FCKF Chicken Nah good. So greasy and all boney, kinda spicy but the grease was too much. They were way cheap though 8 hot wings for 2 quid. That’s good value for that amount of cholesterol. 1 wing outta 5 only for the pure value
Lazy Oaf’s creative and fried chicken fanatic Jake Grear test drives London’s finest chicken joints. We feel like chicken tonight.

Your photos always have a real documentary feel about them; do you think it’s important for your photo shoots to tell a story? Yes of course. So many shoots these days are unrealistic and it looks that way. I feel that photos look better when the subject is on a mission, doing something or
just chillin like real friends would. As a photographer and stylist, how does it feel to be in front of the lens in these photos? I don’t mind being in both positions. A few years ago I wouldn’t have felt as comfortable as I do now. I’m actually starting to really enjoy being in front of the camera. It’s fun!
Where can we see more of you and your work? I have a few shoots coming out this fall with SHK magazine and Junk Magazine. Other than that watch out for me at VICE Magazine doing fashion, where I work full-time.
San Fransisco born, New York City bound photographer and stylist Miyako Bellizzi took her favourite designs from our Autumn Collection on a racy night out in the Big Apple with her girls. Taking a break from behind the lens, Miyako struck a pose alongside her homies Ashley Smith and Ellen Virgona. Damn girls you’ve got it going on.

Looks like you had a good night out? Yeah it was a boss night out. Ashley (blonde) and I are roommates, and it was our friend Ellen’s last night in America so we decided to do this shoot all together to keep it fun! We just hung out, got some food, went on a mission. We found a school that was open and took a bunch of pictures.
how do we join your gang? I’m hella chill! As long as you chill we’ll vibe. I’m probably the most mellow chick you’ll ever meet. I don’t have problems with anybody, let’s all be homies!

TOP DOGS PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEONN WARD
02 : BOLLOCKSTE
For nearly three centuries London’s Battersea Dogs and Cats Home have been rescuing our favourite four-legged friends either reuniting lost cats and dogs with their owners or working hard to find them brand new, good quality homes. We got together with Lazy Oaf lookbook photographer, and fellow dog lover, Leonn Ward to take an extra special tour of Battersea’s Dogs and Cats Home and meet some of their top dogs. As expected, we fell in love time and time again and we had a hard time leaving empty handed. When speaking about her love for dogs, Leonn said “I can honestly say I love every single dog equally no matter how they act or what they look like. Dogs are brave, when they’ve been through a bad stage in their lives, they get up and carry on and will still wag their tail when something comes along and makes their day. This is why Battersea Dogs Home plays such a massive role especially in London. It allows the dogs to become the dog they are suppose to be and even more importantly, it saves their lives.”

CRAIG ROBERTS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MILLS
52
Are you going to tell us who? The actor Alex Pettyfer, the guy who looks like an Abercrombie and Fitch model from Magic Mike. Someone asked me if I had ever walked out of any films and I said ones with him in. It was actually a joke he’s a good actor… So you weren’t a rebellious teen then? No I played Xbox for the majority of my upbringing and watched films.
He first graced our screens in the cast of
CBBC’s The Story of Tracey Beaker aged just 13 and really won our hearts as the lead in the British coming-of-age film Submarine. He’s since starred in a string of music videos and TV series, most recently Being Human and Skins and will be sharing the big screen with Seth Rogen in Neighbors releasing in Spring ’14. We chatted to Wales born, London based actor, writer and director Craig Roberts, 22, about social media, Subway and Slim Shady. What are you up to at the moment? I’m writing a TV show for Sky, it’s about three kids and their dad is going to London for the weekend and there’s a dark twist. Then I’m doing a thing called End of the Fucking World that is a comic book turned into an online series. I’m also directing some music videos. Talking of music videos, we saw you in that one where you’re dressed as a human candle with Winona Ryder for The Killers? Whoa! Yeah that was cool, it was directed by TimBurton he is amazing. Winona was so good we need more actresses like Winona. I feel like no one matches up to Winona Ryder and Christina Richie in their hay day. I really looked like Uncle Fester in that video, which is not good! We read you’re going to be in a film Seth Rogen next year? Yeah I’ve just got back from shooting it in LA. It’s called Neighbors, it’s about a fraternity moving into a sub-urban town, it’s crazy. I play a guy called Ass Juice, I’m wearing a crop top for most of it. And what about Seth Rogen? We love Seth. He is so clever and so funny and always stoned. Zac Afron is also in it, he has crazy abs.
What clique were you in at school? Well I was in the kids TV show called The Story of Tracey Beaker and ordinarily I think I would have got bulled but because I was on television, the hardest kid in school took a liking to me and I joined that group of cool kids. I never talked, I just tagged along. In Skins your character Dominic has a pretty full on office job, have you ever had to do a 9-5? No I have never had a proper job. I want to, I’d like to work in a cinema or something, like Screen on Green in Islington, I always envy the people who work there. We understand you are a big Eminem fan, why do you love Slim Shady? Because he is a genius and he doesn’t give up. He’s about 40 years of age now and he still won’t let anyone be better than him. He has such a big fan base that the music industry couldn’t turn him away, he’s like Elvis for rap. He’s also a great actor, he needs to act more. Would you ever want to be a rapper? I tried. I recorded a few tracks but I don’t know where they are. I’ll be out of a job if they came out, like that guy from Coronation Street You started acting young, a lot of the US child actors seems to go insane in their twenties, why do you think that is? I think Disney is very intense compared to CBBC. In Hollywood there is a lot more of a party scene and they get put into that at any early age. Miley Cyrus needs some help, more so then Amanda Bynes I’d say. Talking of Amanda Bynes, what do you think about social media? As an actor do you feel a certain pressure to have keep up? No, I’m not told to do it, I don’t see a need for it. I am on Twitter, I don’t promote myself though I did go through a stage of slagging people off on there.
We just saw you in the new series of Skins, were your teen years anything like the cast of the show? No nothing like that, that’s why I am in the adult, more slow-paced version because I don’t think I would have fitted into the drinking alcohol and taking drugs.
53
And Facebook? I had to leave Facebook because people were just posting pictures of themselves and telling me what they were doing. It didn’t make any sense to me. You know that there is a fuckyeahcraigroberts Tumblr right? That’s a sign you’ve made it. Oh yeah? I have a fuckyeah page? I’m gonna check that out. Hope it’s not just loads of me from Tracy Beaker. How do you know about Lazy Oaf? Because I was directing a music video for a band called Nimmo and the Gauntletts and they were wearing Lazy Oaf for it. I have a few Lazy Oaf items from the Batman collection Ah yes Batman, if you had to play a super hero who would it be? Spiderman. It’s the one I could play because you don’t have to have an incredible jaw line; you just put a whole outfit on. It’s the one that geeks can play. You were in a film called Submarine, what is your favourite sub from Subway? Apparently they are called subs because of they’re shaped like a Submarine. Is that why it’s called Subway? Really? I don’t know if I believe that. I’d pick Steak and Cheese with loads of olives. 6inch or foot long? 6inch, as a meal deal with crisps and Coke. Twitter / Instagram: @CraigRoberts10
