INTENSIFY IGNIS THE NEW FRAGRANCE

01 SKETCHES/IDEATION

FORM

The form of the bottles follow a simplistic design, experimenting with both angular and curvatious forms, before developing the latter. The addition of a swept helix around the body of the bottle adds another layer and sense of depth to the bottle, whilst the softly blending indents create additional visual aesthetics.

BRIEF

Create a fully developed model of a perfume bottle based on the diffuser provided. The design must demonstrate an understanding of the 3D modelling of complex forms, which will require proficiency in surface modelling. The surface model will then need to be developed to a representation of the proposed manufactured product.

FUNCTION

The perfume bottle has been designed for men, combining feminine and masculine styles together as one. In perfume bottle design, form is often won out over function, with modern perfumes designed not exclusively for the scent, but with the bottles that carry it. However despite this I have tried to incorporate both functionality and form into my design.

STYLE

The style of the ďŹ nal design depicts that of a wine decanter. With a narrow body and wide voluptuous base, the design infers maturity and sophistication. This results in a visually stunning concept, with the viewers attention immediately drawn from the top of the bottle to the bottom.

01 THE MARKET

01 SURFACE MODELLING CURVATURE ANALYSIS After developing a ďŹ nal concept for my perfume bottle, I then used Solidworks to build up a prototype using surface modelling. To create the model, I used a series of splines and boundary surfaces of which I analysed in great detail in order to achieve true curvature continuity. From this I was able to create a ďŹ nal assembly model where I considered appropriate material thicknesses, clearences and manufacturing assembly methods.

01 BRANDING/ADVERTISING

PACKAGING After developing my design using surface modelling on Solidworks, I created a range of packaging displays for both sets of perfume. It was important that when developing the packaging for ‘Ignis’ and ‘Glacies’, it must promote the product successfully, communicating the products exact styling and function through typography, colour and other visual aids.

02 THE PROBLEM BRIEF

Design and develop a smart city app that enhances the experience of Smart City Living. The concept must be app based and address a clearly defined need or opportunity identified through user research.

PERSONA / AIDEN BOYLES

RESEARCH SCENARIO

MIND MAPPING

I am researching the current experiences of arranging a flat share for young professionals in order to design a smart city app to enhance this experience. I accompanied him to a flat viewing in Birmingham, in an attempt to understand the issues and complications that may arise when looking for a flat share with other occupants.

PAIN POINTS

Aiden was unable to book a viewing directly from the app/website. Aiden was provided with inaccurate directions. The agent was late to the viewing, making Aiden late to work. As the viewing took place, Aiden was introduced to current occupants, however was not able to get to know them as well as he would have liked. This frustrated him as finding appropriate occupants is just as important as the location and price of the flat.

PERSONAL DETAILS

Aiden is a young professional, currently living outside of Birmingham, in a house with his family. His job often takes him all around Birmingham, not always working in the same place each week. Although he is now financially independent, Aiden is looking to share a flat with other occupants to reduce renting costs. He looks forward to living in a more social environment with people of similar interests.

GOALS

To find an appropriate flat available in the required location, within the specified budget. To find a shared flat with occupants of similar interests and age, without worry or stress. Finding the balance between the desired location/budget and the type of occupants. To book and attend a flat viewing without the hassle of the tenant or agent being late. To meet and get to know potential occupants with ease.

INITIAL WIREFRAME SKETCHES

02 DEVELOPMENT/USER TESTING WIREFRAME DEVELOPMENT From my user research, I was able to develop a series of initial wireframes for my proposed app. When creating the wireframes I considered elements such as the visual interaction and global navigation on the screens. By starting with the global navigation structure, I then designed and addressed the more detailed elements of the screens. The incorporation of global navigation will not only improve and aid usability, but provide consistancy within the app.

‘POP’ PROTOTYPING

After developing my initial wireframes, I then used POP prototyping app to physically test my screens. This is an incredibly useful tool as it allowed me to watch and analyse how the user directly interacted with my app. I was able to gain positive feedback allowing me to develop and perfect my screens, before creating the app on Axure.

SEARCH RESULTS

SEARCH FILTER

Haven uses a global navigation bar at the bottom and top of each screen allowing the user to navigate between different features of the app, wherever and whenever they desire. The bottom bar contains a ‘Main menu’ , ‘Home, and ’My profile’ navigation. The top bar contains a ‘Back’ arrow, the title of each display screen and a ‘Settings’ navigation icon, allowing the user to quickly and effortlessly adjust the settings of the app.

VISUAL DESIGN

Haven follows a simplistic design, consisting of a minimal, colourful back drop, of which the app is displayed on, using a blend of these torquise shades to create the ultimate visual experience. Each icon is rendered individually, using shadows to develop a sense of depth within the app. Haven is designed to be used on Apple IOS devices.

02 FINAL CONCEPT

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Sociable - “Meet new people while achieving a common goal” Haven allows the user to search and discover new people with similar interests and lifestyle. The filtering search system and search results display reflects this principle, displaying a friendly, sociable interface. This allows the user to immerse themselves within the app, feeling connected to the people they match with. Minimal - “Simple and easily understood for stress-free use” Haven follows an incredibly minimalistic design, relying on the clarity of its interface in order for the user to navigate through the app successfully. All finger gestures are kept to a minium, using either a press or swipe to operate the entire app. Practical - “Effective and successful in solving a real city living problem” Haven offers an incredibly practical interface, allowing the user to navigate through the app logically. Using a simple display layout with the number of icons, buttons and colours kept to a minimum, the user is able to apply a rational method for using the app. Convenient - “Provides minimal interaction for the user in the persuit of their goal” Haven’s interface has been designed considering the principle of convenience; something that is absolutely fundamental in all great apps. Efficient - “Reduces the cost and time required compared to the current system” The simple steps in order to navigate through the app is both time efficient and functional, taking the user to their end goal as quick as possible.

DEVELOPING/PROTOTYPING

03 SKETCHES/IDEATION

1. DESIGNING THE WIDGET & MOULD TOOL I began the project by first conducting some rapid sketches of my widget, developing a final concept and brand, before designing the mould tool. The mould tool was altered and developed several times before achieving a final concept with the aid of CAD software. The cavity blocks and inserts were designed and then further re-designed to achieve full feasibility for manufacture. Using both CAD and rapid sketching to develop my concept was very beneficial.

2. TRANSFERING SKETCH PROPOSAL TO 3D CAD SOFTWARE After developing a final concept, I was then able to use CAD software (Solidworks) to build my mould tool and simulate the injection process, analysing in particular the polymer flow within the mould, as well as the weight of the widget and the volume of shrinkage that may occur. When happy with my design, I then created a set of engineering drawings for the mould tool ready for manufacture. It was important that these drawings were complete with a full set of dimensions, tolerences, notation and details where required. 3. PROTOTYPING USING THE CNC MILLING MACHINE After producing a full set of working engineering drawings, I then used Solidworks’ built in CAM software to program the machining of my mould blocks. From this I was able to generate a set of code and a set up sheet, which I used to create a blue foam model prototype using the CNC milling machine. The simulation time for each block was approximately 30 minutes. When machining the blue foam prototype, the tool changes were all conducted manually, increasing manufacturing time. When machining the final aluminium mould tool, the tool changes will be conducted automatically within the XYZ milling machine.

MACHINING

DEVELOPING/PROTOTYPING

BRIEF

Value Brand Functional Promotional

Design a functional polymer ‘widget’ that is intended to be given away to promote a particular brand/product. In addition, the widget must use a donar part from an exisitng product to provide a functional requirement and/or upcycle the part. It must also have more than one part that fits together to meet a functional requirement. Design and manufacture an injection mould tool to inject in order to create the promotional widget.

03 MANUFACTURE/MACHINING CNC The mould blocks were created using the CNC milling machine, with the HTML files produced in HSM works. We simulated the cutter paths in Solidworks before manufacturing. This was an effective process allowing us to trial run our design without wasting material.

MILLING Each insert was manufactured using the vertical milling machine. This was the most suitable method, as it provided us with the highest degree of accuracy, allowing us to meet tolerences.

CNC MILL

WATER JET The donor part was created using the water jet cutter to machine an 8mm sheet of mild steel, following the 2D software. The donor part was used to provide the widget with rigidity. The water jet cutter allowed us to create a complicated part that was much too complicated to manually mill.

LATHE Each of the insert, line-up and donor pins were manufactured on the lathe machine out of silver steel. Whilst turning the pins on the lathe, we were able to achieve a high degree of accuracy allowing us to machine within the set tolerences. It was crucial that these pins were as accurate as possible, in order to secure the mould tool together and withstand the pressure from the injecting polymer flow.

WATER JET

SURFACE GRINDER The surface grinder was used at the end of the project to grind down the inserts to the correct tolerances, allowing the entire mould to sit flush together. Carrying out the process at the end of the project allowed us to improve the surface finish of each individual insert, allowing a reduction in flash.

03 FINAL INJECTION

MASS PRODUCTION THE TASK: AFTER INJECTING OUR FINAL WIDGET, WE SIMULATED AND DEVELOPED OUR MOULD TOOLS FOR MASS PRODUCTION. A TIME FRAME OF 3 MONTHS WAS SET AND WITHIN THIS TIME FRAME, WE WERE TO PRODUCE 3 MILLION WIDGETS. THE RADIAL RUNNER SYSTEM BELOW SUGGESTS HOW THIS MAY BE ACHIEVED. WITH A SIMULATED CYCLE TIME OF 9.65s FROM THE DEVELOPED MOULD TOOL; IN 3 MONTHS WE WOULD BE ABLE TO PRODUCE 3,103,832 WIDGETS.

04 THE COMPACT, VERSATILE KITCHEN AID

04 SKETCHES/IDEATION

BRIEF

Using a live hinge or hinges, design a homeware product for student accomodation that must be capable of compact storage. The predominant material should be polypropylene with the exception of fasteners and/or special purpose componentry. The size of the product should not exceed 500mm square and 300mm height when stored away.

The user enters the kitchen ready to prepare some food. ‘Chop.’ is in its primary function as a kitchen knife holder.

The user removes the knife ready for use and unfolds ‘Chop.’ into its chopping board function.

The green chopping board is selected, allowing the user to prepare fruit and veg. A red chopping board is integrated for meats.

After preparing the food , the user unfolds ‘Chop.’ and positions the silicon colander over the sink ready to wash and drain the veg.

Once the food is prepared and washed, the user pops out the used chopping boards ready for cleaning.

The user then returns each chopping board and folds away the product, making use of its compact storage design.

04 MODELLING

FOAM BOARD PROTOTYPING After developing my final concept, I used foam board to create a prototype to demonstrate the three states of use of my design. State one demonstrates the design in its primary function - a kitchen knife holder. State two highlights the product functioning as a colander. Finally, state three shows the design as a chopping board. Using foam board I was able to infer these states clearly and efficiently.

05 THE OPPORTUNITY BRIEF

Identify an opportunity for an IoT product for which industrial design and app interface are dedicated to a clearly defined context e.g. healthcare, leisure, sport, security, travel. This opportunity may be based around current needs or projected up to five years into the future. The aim of the project is to focus on the consolidation of core industrial design capability that is central to creative professional practice. A high fidelity presentation model will be required.

CONNECTED ENVIRONMENT

There is a rapidly growing market for ‘smart’ products. IoT devices are able to connect to the internet or any other ‘smart’ system, transferring/obtaining data in order to provide a function to the user.

PRODUCT PROPOSAL

A ‘smart’ irrigation device for the homeowner/grower. The product uses smart technology and motion sensors to allow the user to water, fertilise and monitor their garden/produce from their mobile phone.

05 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

05 MODEL MAKING PROTOTYPING After developing my proposed concept, I then began prototyping and modelling my product. I did this by creating a low fidelity electronic prototype and blue foam model. The electronic mock up used a series of sensors to portray how the motion sensor within the product would function. The blue foam model will give me a physical idea of the form and size of my design.
