The company

In 1925, Timoteo Martini, the father of the company's current president, founded “Lampadari Martini,� a small artisan company specialised in the production of lighting fixtures, in Milan. In over eighty years of activity, the company has turned into one of the most important industrial groups of its sector, namely the Martini Illuminazione Group. The latter comprises Martini S.p.A (founded in 1971 at Concordia sulla Secchia in the province of Modena), Sames S.p.A. (acquired in 1995 and transferred from Moncalieri to the current production plants) and, since 2006, Sothis (a company specialised in the production of decorative STRASSŽ chandeliers). The Martini group conducts high level research in terms of product design, construction-related aspects and monitoring of fixture lighting performance. This activity allows for implementing a vast array of products in a variety of applications, from indoor lighting in offices and workplaces, commercial environments, hospitality structures, places of worship and museums, to outdoor applications such as urban and street lighting. The Martini Illuminazione Group production plants cover a total area of 21,500 square metres and house some 170 employees. Thanks to the extensive experience of a large team of architects and lighting designers, for several years Martini has been offering assistance in the design and development of lighting schemes, from the preliminary research phase up to the

selection of single products and lighting engineering calculations. The requirements of each project are always carefully assessed, so as to verify the actual impact of light on a given environment and ensure compliance with the standards governing every installation, whether indoor or outdoor. Martini Group designers implement specific software programmes for lighting engineering calculations, in order to offer solutions that assess the various types of products and light sources for improved performance control, comfort and energy saving (as in the case of LED products for exteriors) resulting from each architectural light scene. Recently, the company strengthened its lighting engineering design centre in Milan, while showrooms opened in Rome, Moscow and St. Petersburg as part of a constantly evolving project. All the fixtures are designed to be used in conjunction with the most advanced light sources, such as halogen, fluorescent, metal halide and sodium vapour lamps, with particular emphasis on LED technology; moreover, the fixtures are subjected to an ISO 9001 certified quality control process, which includes tests and checks in the company's in-house laboratory. Special attention is also devoted to ensuring compliance with the regulations in force in all relevant countries, and in assessing and certifying the technical and lighting features of the products.

The company

The products are designed using the most advanced modelling and threedimensional prototyping software, in accordance with ISO EN 9001-2008 quality system procedures. A group of in-house technicians designs and develops reflectors using special software programmes that allow for verifying the accuracy of data to achieve maximum energy performance; the calculated values are then verified through laboratory testing.

Research and development

The departments are created in accordance with the most up-to-date logistics criteria, and are structured so that components and semi-processed parts can be rapidly located through barcode management. Specialist staff are continuously trained to ensure high reliability and quality levels throughout all processing phases. The processes are supported by semiautomated and automated equipement that allows for reducing the manufacturing times for lighting fixtures. Furthermore, at the end of the line, full functional tests are conducted on the finished product.

Web communication

The need to satisfy a variety of customer requests has led to an evolution in the Martini company philosophy: specifically, the layout of the company website has been configured so that any visitor may access the products in the most complete way possible, before any direct contact takes place with the company. The website is subdivided into detailed sections dedicated to product groups, projects, technical data, drawings, the company's parallel activities, events and newly-released products. The website is easy to consult, thanks to the initial interface with a menu that guides the user to the relevant area in a quick, intuitive manner without missing any important information. Each section is outlined in detail to improve its initial impact and to complement the graphic illustrations, thereby facilitating the

data assimilation process. In the download section, which includes brochures and catalogues, it is possible to download 2-D and 3-D diagrams, photometric data, technical specifications, installation instructions and lighting engineering calculation programmes. A qualified team ensures that the website is constantly up-do-date by entering data in real time and adapting the structure to marketing requirements.

Milo design: Lapo Grassellini

The product of technological and aesthetic research, Milo is a ceiling-mounted track spotlight equipped with a LED light source. Attention to detail coupled with the use of high-quality materials are reflected in the highly advanced technological systems implemented on Milo: the fast cooling heat extraction system ensuring long-life of the LED lamp, the cylindrical aluminium body, the anti-glare ring made of plastic PPS material and frictionlock adjustment along the horizontal or vertical axis.

Body The spotlight consists of an element created through an extrusion process and a control gear compartment created by means of mechanical laser cutting and bending processes. The front rings housing the LED optical assembly are made using PPS plastic material, which is able to withstand high temperatures. The ceiling-mounted track spotlight is equipped with an adapter for installation on Euro standard three-phase tracks.

Track-fitted spotlight with long-life LEDs thanks to the Fast Cooling technology: a system based on direct and rapid heat extraction. Certain environments require recessed ceiling fixtures so as to conceal the body and control gear, while at the same time ensuring correct illumination. To fulfil this requirement, the Sax 80 recessed range has been extended; the fixtures fit the M50 lamp and long-life LEDs for improved efficiency thanks to the Fast Cooling technology, a system based on direct and rapid heat extraction.

Bex design: Lapo Grassellini

An extremely innovative recessed adjustable fixture offering three main advantages. The positioning range is superior to that of any other product on the market, as Bex can be rotated from -30째 to +90째 around its vertical axis. This allows for dirrecting the light beam perpendicularly to the surface on which the fixture is installed. Its design remains minimal, as the two vertical and horizontal position locking rings have been integrated into a single component. This elimination of one ring also means that the fixture is very compact. Bex therefore offers complete versatility and may be used in any type of environment, regardless of its style. The Saturno recessed spotlight offers a highly flexible solution for the lighting project and is ideal whenever accent lighting is required. Two special devices located inside the fixture allow for directing the light beam towards single objects or surfaces. With its minimalist design featuring sober, rigorous lines, Perla is the ideal recessed lighting fixture for solutions where light takes centre-stage. Available in the 160 and 105 versions, the fixtures can be installed flush or with a visible decorative bezel. The fixture is equipped for housing M50 or M11 lamps with long-life LEDs, thanks to the Fast Cooling technology - a system based on direct and rapid heat extraction.

Stilis night cycle customisation

The patented H.E.L.S. (High Efficiency Light System) device allows for programming the power levels of all lighting fixtures in the system and incorporates both the positioning system and diffuser screen, while complying with the luminance values specified by European legislation with fewer LEDs compared to products of the same category currently available on the market.

Operation The electronic power board mounted on the fixtures allows for two distinct operation modes: - In the first, which implements a PLM communication system, a control box housing the system's "logic" is installed on the electrical control panel: all the fixtures receive information as determined by the programme. - In the second mode, no additional elements are included and the fixtures perform a self-adaptive programme based on an algorithm; the latter is able

to determine the time of the year and approximately calculate the time periods of reduced light emission. The control box located on the system's electrical control panel includes a weekly timetable programmed with the dawn and dusk times relative to the latitude; based on these times, the system will turn on/off and dim according to the different energy saving profiles.

Control box-fixture communication Communication between the control box and the fixtures occurs through the line's PLM, while the control box interfaces with the appropriate control station via GSM or GPRS. The control box transmits collected data to the control station on a regular basis; the server then analyses the data and makes it suitable for querying. The system's settings can be modified from the remote station, accessible through browser, without having to physically access the control box.

In the event of a malfunction or anomaly, the system immediately transmits the circuit's data and the number of the fixture causing the malfunction. The programming of the reduced light emission periods through the control box in the electrical control panel occurs by selecting among programmes that are preset by the remote station, via GSM/GPRS communication; the software contains the same selection of pre-set profiles, in addition to a custom profile where the exact reduced output times and percentages of reduced light emission are set.

Selva design: Martini Staff

Selva is the ideal spotlight for uniformly illuminating large surfaces and for grazing light illumination, even up to significant heights, thanks to the light beam emitted by the 48 LEDs comprising the fixture. The doublehinge base enables the lamp compartment to rotate horizontally and to tilt backwards or forwards, while the fixture can be either floor or ceiling mounted. Thanks to the use of intelligent technology, the light scenes can be directly controlled from the fixture's display or, alternatively, through dedicated software programmes with the DMX512 interface.

Body The caps are made entirely of metal and are available in either sandblasted stainless steel or grey varnished aluminium. The stainless steel version is highly resistant to abrasions and can be used for lightweight drive-over applications, while the aluminium version is walkable. Inside the fixture, the cartridge housing the wiring and LEDs is completely embedded in resin to resist weathering and can be easily replaced. A kit for performing a sealed electrical connection is supplied with the fixture.

Fermo is a wheel stop designed for use in residential environments or public areas. It is extremely sturdy thanks to the steel bar and cast iron bases. The poles are made using S235JR steel and are hot galvanised in compliance with the EN40-4 standard. They are finished with a satin-finish grey polyester powder paint coat. For poles up to 5.5 m above the ground, the terminal board slot measures 132Ă—38 mm. For poles over 6 m above the ground, the terminal board slot measures 186Ă—45 mm. LED technology

HISTORY In 1907, Henry Joseph Round discovered the electroluminescence effect. The first red luminescence diode (LED) was developed by Nick Holonyak Jr. only in 1962. In 1971 different coloured LEDs - green, yellow and orange - were introduced. Diodes with highly efficient emissions in the green and blue wavelengths were only introduced in 1993. This step paved the way for obtaining white light. Indeed, 1995 saw the introduction of the first white LED, obtained through luminescence conversion.

Currently, technological improvements make the LED a highly performing light source that is suitable for a wide range of general illumination applications.

LED technology

TECHNOLOGY The acronym "LED" stands for Light Emitting Diode and defines a diode capable of emitting light when a minimal amount of electrical current flows through it. The diode consists of semi-conducting material arranged in a layered structure. The operating principle of LEDs is based on the electroluminescence phenomenon caused by the emission of photons in the visible range. Luminescence is generated when a P-N junction polarises directly. Applying voltage to the LED generates a flow of current that is directly responsible for the luminescence. Unlike common incandescent lamps, whose filaments operate at very high temperatures and are characterised by significant thermal inertia, LEDs emit cold light. The LED was conceived as a coloured light source. The colour of the light emitted depends on the diode: if the mineral composing the junction is gallium arsenide, red light is emitted, whereas gallium phosphide is the mineral responsible for the emission of yellow or green light. As a result of the production process of semi-conductors, the major LED manufacturers (Lumileds, Cree, etc.) classify LEDs into groups (BINS) based on Colour, Luminous Flux, and Operating Voltage; consequently, depending on the relevant manufacturer, each LED bears a label that identifies the light source according to these 3 parameters. With regard to White LEDs, an interesting aspect concerns the apparent colour of light: from a commercial perspective, companies commercialise Cool White, Neutral White and Warm White products.
