32091 Point Place | Oceanfront LAGUNA BEACH | $5,795,000 Staked out in the 1930’s as one of the prime oceanfront residential locations in Laguna Beach and architecturally lauded by Sunset Magazine in 1950’s, this very special property has not been available for purchase since 1971. Located on the point of what was to become south Laguna Beach’s Point Place, the privacy and locale provide glimpses of life in the early years of this vibrant artists’ community. The home commands a sweeping view of sand, whitewater, and coastline on three sides visible from all rooms of the home, save the powder room. Considered a key historical asset for the area, exterior and interior design elements are largely original evoking a marvelous mid-century vibe. Multiple exterior terraces expand the living spaces in the mild California yearround climate. Steps from the home lead directly to the sands of Thousand Steps Beach and Paradise Cove. Very few are fortunate enough to live along the beautiful Laguna coast, and only a handful of the few may call a rare property like 32091 Point Place their own. 32091PointPlace.com

RICHARD MACDONALD A Body in Motion
A self-taught sculptor and global sensation, Richard MacDonald has produced a body of work that has completely revolutionized contemporary figurative sculpture. Though his monumental 26-foot bronze piece The Flair was installed at the Georgia International Plaza in Atlanta for the 1996 Olympic Games, MacDonald’s influence can be felt right here in Laguna Beach. With works on display at Dawson Cole Fine Art, MacDonald has worked tirelessly to connect with the Laguna Beach community as an artist as well as a teacher and philanthropist.

“Cradled between mountains and the sea, Laguna offers (us) a sense of place quite unique to California,” Wayne and Faye Baglin remarked in a recent interview. Residents since 1969, the Baglins reside in a charming three-storied Laguna home brimming with art on every floor … with additional art in storage. ... Their love of Laguna, the ocean and the beach extends to their art collection, and the warmth of their personalities is reflected in the warmth of their art. Seascapes and landscapes dominate, with still lifes, figuratives, abstracts and whimsies rounding out the collection.

CUNNINGHAM and HAIGHT
A Partnership Forged in Canvas and Paint
They call their combined artistry Duets, and indeed they are a finely tuned pair. Stephanie Cunningham and Betty Haight have been making art, not music, together in a unique way, as visitors to the Sawdust Festival and the Festival of Arts, as well as a slew of collectors, will attest. Begun in 2003, their collaboration does not involve sharing one canvas but instead producing separate, individual paintings that they join together.

the HORIZON CHASER and HIS HANGOVER HOUSE Richard Halliburton in Laguna Beach
28 LagunaBeachARTmagazine.com
American adventurer Richard Halliburton rides on an elephant. About 1930. Chivasso. Italy.
written by Grove Koger
By the time he visited Laguna Beach for the first time in 1930, Richard Halliburton was already a famous man, his handsome face and exciting books familiar to millions of readers here and abroad. Rather than settling down
sensibly after graduating from
Princeton, Halliburton had traveled around the world and published an
irresistibly readable account of his trip as The Royal Road to Romance in 1925. The book recounted such exploits
as crossing the Atlantic by freighter, climbing the Matterhorn and the
pyramid of Khufu, taking a midnight
swim in the reflecting pools of the Taj Mahal, and so on, all on a shoestring
budget. When questioned, he gave his occupation as “horizon chaser.”
Hungry for just such colorful fare,
Jazz Age Americans kept the book
on the best-seller lists for three years. Interest abroad was so great that it was translated into 15 languages. Then in The Glorious Adventure, published in 1927, Halliburton
retraced the supposed route that
wily Greek warrior Odysseus had
taken home from the Trojan War. New World to Conquer found Halliburton
in Central America (where he swam
the entire length of the Panama Canal) and points south, while The Flying Carpet took him around the world
again—this time in an open-cockpit biplane.
LagunaBeachARTmagazine.com 29
Written in a dashing style,
Halliburton’s stories thrilled a
generation of armchair travelers and inspired quite a few real ones. But
were they true? Well, mostly. As he himself put it, he liked to “splash a little red paint” over the more humdrum aspects of life.
By 1930, however, some of those
humdrum aspects were catching up
with Halliburton. He had grown tired of the increasingly difficult struggle of making money to finance more
adventures that he would then write up in order to make more money. In search of a retreat, he rented a
bungalow in Laguna Beach, and in the process discovered a community that one of his biographers, Gerry Max,
has called “a weary rover’s dream.” Halliburton was so taken with
Laguna that he hit upon the idea of building a house there, although it
would be some time before he found the right spot. The moment came
one morning while he was taking a horseback ride south of town with
Paul Mooney, whom he had met in 1930 and who was to become his
companion as well as his writing
partner. Intrigued by a trail at the mouth of Laguna Creek Canyon,
they rode up to a narrow ridge from
which they watched the surf breaking several hundred feet below them. Aliso Canyon stretched away on
the other side of the ridge, while the
majestic San Gabriel Mountains rose in the distance.
Shortly afterward Halliburton
bought a lot on the ridge, and in time commissioned a friend of Mooney’s,
an ambitious young architect named William Alexander Levy, to create a
house for him and Mooney. Inspired by the site, Levy designed a flat-
roofed, three-story structure in the International Style to be made of
reinforced poured concrete. However, the slopes of the ridge were so steep 30 LagunaBeachARTmagazine.com
that the workmen had to carry most of the materials up on foot, and the concrete itself had to be mixed and
poured entirely by hand over a period of 42 hours.
Halliburton called the dramatic
structure Hangover House—
ostensibly a reference to its position
hanging over the edges of the ridge,
although of course the name lent itself to other interpretations.
Sadly, Halliburton was able to
spend only a few short months in his new home, for he was preparing for yet another jaunt—a voyage across the Pacific from Hong Kong to San
Francisco on a Chinese junk named
the Sea Dragon. Three weeks into the
voyage, however, the Sea Dragon was
caught in a typhoon, and the ship and its crew were never seen again.
“When my time comes to die,”
Halliburton had written years earlier, “I’ll be able to die happy, for I will have … experienced all the joy,
pain, thrills—every emotion that
any human ever had—and I’ll be especially happy if I am spared a stupid, common death in bed.” In the years that followed
Halliburton’s disappearance, his
books also vanished from the scene, but now they’re back in print in
attractive new editions, allowing more generations of readers to share in the horizon chaser’s exploits.
Hangover House itself passed
into the hands of Halliburton’s
grieving parents, who sold it to
Wallace and Zolite Scott in 1942. By
the time their daughter died in 2010,
however, what architectural historian Ted Wells has called “one of the best
modern houses in the United States” was in need of renovation. Now the property of a new owner who has
modernized it, Hangover House still stands guard over the South Laguna coast. l

Innate Inspiration A Look into the Works of FERDOS MALEKI
from the tree of Life 36X36, mix medium encaustic 32 LagunaBeachARTmagazine.com
written by Kimberly Johnson
Inspired by the mystic words of 13th century poet Rumi and suffused with the ethereal qualities of the natural world, the creative visions of Iranian-born artist Ferdos Maleki are born. Maleki’s career began as an honest and humble extension
of her own creative needs—a desire to produce environmentally
conscious three-dimensional pieces while exploring her interest in aspects of the natural world around her. There was no emphasis
on the value of her talent or the amount of time she spent on her work, just a longing for creative gratification.
Maleki has been intrigued by nature for a long time. “My
work is a lot about nature—seeing nature and understanding
nature. … I’ve seen all of these elements in nature and I’ve wanted to incorporate them in art, and finally it’s happened.”
Much of Maleki’s work—which utilizes plant materials,
beeswax and color pigment—closely resembles the textures and patterns to be found on a walk through the sprawling land of a city by the sea. As we all know, artists draw upon a foundation of inspiration that feeds into the execution of their craft; every
childhood experience plays into the formation of that story. Maleki was born on the Caspian coast of Iran and raised predominantly by her grandmother, and her tastes and musings reflect the essence of her values and her culture.
It was her grandmother who introduced the young woman to
the musings of medieval poet Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, and

Maleki spent years meditating on his words. “I remember reading

[among his observations] something to this effect: ‘Every single thing in
the universe can communicate and we can hear— if we are ready, we are all connected.’ For years now,
I have held on to this thought and
cherished its possibilities while living and making art. I hope my work will instill a voice of abstraction,
portraying texture and tones that mimic the journey of nature’s wonderment.”
Rumi himself was born and
lived in the same land as Maleki,
albeit many centuries earlier. As it so commonly does, however, art
has transcended space and time to
inspire. Through her grandmother’s encouragement, as well as the iridescent words and imagery
provided in her upbringing, Maleki was able to thrive. 34 LagunaBeachARTmagazine.com

migdio Vasquez, the pioneering artist behind
nearly two dozen iconic Orange County murals, died August 9, 2014 in Newport Beach from pneumonia. He was 75 years old. A painter as well as a muralist, Vasquez was famous for his vivid depictions of barrio life and the working class. Vasquez developed an interest in art
at a young age and, inspired by Mexican artist Diego Rivera, devoted his talents to illuminating the everyday moments and ordinary faces within his Latino
community. His photorealistic portraits of immigrants, day laborers and poor
families did what no other Chicano artist had done before: place an unfamiliar— and even controversial—spotlight on
the Latino working class in one of the
wealthiest counties in the United States. Vasquez was born in 1939 in
Jerome, Arizona, but his father—who
worked for the Phelps-Dodge copper
mines—relocated the family to Orange,
California, the following year. The young
man started out as an artist making comic books that mirrored his father’s stories from the Mexican Revolution. Vasquez
attended Mater Dei High School as well as Orange High, and took his first art
classes in the 1950s. He eventually went on to attend Santa Ana College and
earned his master’s degree from Cal State Fullerton, where his thesis project was the creation of an 85-by-65-foot mural

A Body in Motion

Working with models rather than photographs allows Richard MacDonald to capture nuances of life and spirit in his sculptures. Nightfall, Half Life, 2010 LagunaBeachARTmagazine.com 45

A
self-taught sculptor and global sensation, Richard MacDonald
has produced a body of work that has completely revolutionized
contemporary figurative sculpture. Though his
monumental 26-foot bronze piece The Flair was
installed at the Georgia International Plaza in Atlanta for the 1996 Olympic Games, MacDonald’s influence can be felt right here in Laguna Beach. With works on display at Dawson Cole Fine Art, MacDonald
has worked tirelessly to connect with the Laguna
Beach community as an artist as well as a teacher and philanthropist.
A graduate of the Art Center College of Design,
MacDonald spent the bulk of his early career working
as a freelance commercial illustrator, gaining particular experience in the sports illustration arena. In the early 1980s, sensing the decline of illustration in the face
of new digital media, MacDonald broke away from 46 LagunaBeachARTmagazine.com

One of MacDonald’s great skills is in capturing athleticism and grace in motion, as in Sissone, 2009
in the collections of Hillary and Bill Clinton, Dean Koontz, Tony
Robbins and Luciano Pavarotti. Famed author Tom Wolfe has been
quoted saying that MacDonald is “one of those rare artists who can feel the body in motion from the inside out.”
Beginning with a study, MacDonald moves on to a maquette,
and then to variations—starting with an eighteen-inch mold—that will eventually become large-scale sculptures produced through the “lost wax” process. MacDonald uses professional athletes
and dancers as live models, constantly striving to understand the
human body more fully and, as a spokesperson for Cirque du Soleil recently put it, to “create imaginative metaphors of the human
psyche through representation of the body.” For the Royal Ballet
School piece, for instance, he has been working regularly with the school’s principal dancers to capture their most realistic physical and emotional characteristics. He has flown back and forth from
London almost monthly throughout the past year working toward the piece’s completion.
Though he has found worldwide success, MacDonald’s roots
remain solidly in Southern California, particularly Laguna Beach. Feeling that the first galleries in which his work was shown were not letting him express himself as an artist, he opened his own
gallery in Carmel in 1993. Shortly thereafter, his son—who goes
by the first name Rich—opened the second Dawson Cole Fine Art

program. He taught his first course there this past summer, and has since been asked to serve as Co-Chair of the Sculpture Department.
MacDonald partners regularly with Dawson Cole Fine Art to benefit
charitable organizations in Orange County such as the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation, and when it comes to his philanthropic endeavors in the arts, he is particularly passionate about serving children. He has worked with organizations such as the Free Arts for Abused Children program and the
Boys and Girls Club of America. He donated money for an arts wing for the
Boys and Girls Club in Monterey, and continues to devote himself to local and statewide programs that help connect underserved children to the arts.
MacDonald’s legacy will live on not only in galleries, homes and the
monumental installments he’s created around the world, but also in the life
of a very important admirer: his grandson. Eleven-year-old Dawson Cole, for whom Rich and his father named their Laguna and Carmel galleries, spends
his summers working as an intern for and apprentice to his grandfather in his studio. And just like his grandfather, he is showing early potential.
A true body in motion that seems never to rest, Richard MacDonald—just
as in his depictions of athletes and performers—is at the peak of performance in this moment. l for more information www.dawsoncolefineart.com

From the Collection of
Faye and Wayne Baglin written by Debra Leitner photographed by Tom Lamb

“Cradled between mountains and the sea, Laguna offers (us) a sense of place quite unique to California,” Wayne and Faye Baglin remarked in a recent interview.
Residents since 1969, the Baglins reside in a charming
three-storied Laguna home brimming with art on every
floor … with additional art in storage. Upon climbing the
stairs and walking through the welcoming, open doorway, you immediately feel at ease. Sunlight pours through the windows, a breeze gently billows the curtains and the
distant sound of the beach drifts in through the windows. The Baglins are youthful, tan, gracious and relaxed. Their love of Laguna, the ocean and the beach extends to their art collection, and the warmth of their personalities
is reflected in the warmth of their art. Seascapes and
landscapes dominate, with still lifes, figuratives, abstracts and whimsies rounding out the collection.
The first artwork Faye and Wayne purchased together
was from a small gallery in the French Quarter of New
Orleans in 1966, the year they were married. Painted by Colette Pope Heldner (1902-1990), the scene reminded
them of the view from the porch of their first home. That is how the Baglins started collecting and how they continue
to collect today. They choose art that feels familiar and that speaks to them.
One of their newer acquisitions is by local artist April
Raber. The two had admired April’s work for years, but it
took a particular painterly, impressionist seascape to spark a deep connection. The painting’s soft pink, purple and blue palette and its ethereal quality spoke to them. The

explains, “Collectors can respect and take pleasure in an artist’s work, but they are just not ready to buy. However, the day will come.”
Many of the scenes and stories depicted in the Baglins’ collection
have a Laguna Beach connection. Drying Nets, a drawing of a Breton
scene by early twentieth century Laguna artist Edgar Payne, is the most historically significant work they own.
Self-taught painter and local surfing legend Patrick Tobin was a
dear friend of the Baglins, and also shows up in their collection. With
their loose brush strokes, deep colors and impasto application, his plein air California and Mexican scenes are highly prized. Taken from our world too soon, Tobin is greatly missed by all who knew him. 60 LagunaBeachARTmagazine.com
Another artist in the Baglins’ collection is
Jacquie Moffett. A winner of numerous awards,
she has been exhibiting at the Laguna Art Fair for 46 years and is collected throughout the United
States. Moffett studied under famed water colorist Roger Armstrong, several of whose paintings the Baglins own, as did Donald Storm Case, a close friend and another artist represented in their collection.
Though Wayne owns an independent real
estate business in Laguna, he and Faye spend
commitment to his community. A supporter of
the Festival of the Arts since 1981, he is a board
member and past president. He is also chair of the
Laguna Beach Alliance for the Arts and has served on the Laguna Canyon Foundation board. Along with her many social activities, Faye is chair of
CAP, the Community Art Project, a 16-year-old public nonprofit organization dedicated to art
education and the acquisition of public art for the city of Laguna Beach.
The Baglins often buy art at charity events,
much of their time in public service. As mayor of
art festivals and galleries. Wayne explains, “When

other if there was anything of interest. We both must love it, or we won’t buy it.” They rarely miss a Thursday Art Walk in Laguna,
and believe that art walks are an excellent way to get to know the artists and galleries.
A wry and playful Sandra Jones Campbell dinner scene in the
Baglins’ dining room elicits a chuckle from all who view it—as
does her Cindy painting. Wayne explains that everyone who lives in Laguna Beach is familiar with Cindy. He gently describes her
as an eccentric local with a penchant for dressing in costumes and carrying colorful umbrellas. (The community’s caring residents

Cunningham and Haight A Partnership Forged in Canvas and Paint They call their combined artistry
Duets, and indeed they are a finely
tuned pair. Stephanie Cunningham and Betty Haight have been making art,
not music, together in a unique way,
as visitors to the Sawdust Festival and
the Festival of Arts, as well as a slew of collectors, will attest.
Begun in 2003, their collaboration
does not involve sharing one canvas but instead producing separate, individual paintings that they join together.
Cunningham paints dreamlike,
sketchily rendered landscapes, and
Haight somewhat elongated, abstracted
figures--women for the most part. Both paint in oil, and their palettes play to each other, running the gamut from muted yellows, greens and grays to livelier hues.
Haight’s figures tell their stories
which Cunningham invents and that

“Like a new beginning,” reads the tag,
“everything looked fresh and clear after the storm passed and the sun came out. Whatever challenges lie ahead she was ready to face the day.”

“We meet at Betty’s studio,” chimes in Cunningham; “it’s tidier than mine.” After exploring several
possibilities, combining one painting with, say, several others, they reach consensus. Only then is the final work—two conjoined canvasses
signed by both artists—presented to the world.
the collector
John Cunningham, Stephanie’s husband of 54 years,
does the joining as well as the framing, both of which play an important part in the finished product. “John is really
the patient one, sometimes waiting hours until we make up our minds,” says Haight, who adds that sometimes they change their minds in midstream.
The effect of the combined canvasses is earthy,
somewhat rough–hewn, as the frames are made of
repurposed wood, often weathered and scarred but
retaining traces of its original paint and embellishments. The two artists have collected the pieces over the years
from the torn-down cottages once found downtown and in the Big Bend section of Laguna Canyon.
Haight’s style recalls the Bay Area Figurative
Movement, a school of painting that shows the figure in various stylistic permutations--details given or omitted,
lines many or few, faces articulated, suggested or omitted altogether. To add even more visual intrigue, Haight—a collage enthusiast and gatherer of found objects—
embellishes her bare canvas with one or more layers of
colored or textured paper that she then paints over until
only a hint of pattern remains. Cunningham tends towards motifs that can be interpreted as forests in the distance or the foggy outlines of city skyscrapers.

This year’s 6”Squared at the Randy
Higbee Gallery brings together some of
the finest artists in the United States. As
Higbee points out, his own works—like
those of so many of his Southern California colleagues—are plein air, but the artists
represented in the show paint in a wide
variety of styles. Most have never exhibited in Orange County at all.
Given the logistics of moving large
pieces of framed art across the country, Higbee knew that it would be hard to
arrange a large show with large pieces. He also knew that many potential exhibitors
already had obligations to existing galleries and collectors, making it difficult to get works from them.
But what, he wondered, if he asked
for small, square paintings that would be
top-notch paintings for a reasonably small investment. And they would be small enough that anyone could now own a
masterpiece by one of the finest realistic
artists in the United States—artists whose paintings adorn magazine covers and
whose works are sold before they are even completed.
Higbee says that he doesn’t know of a
larger show in the United States, and that past sales have been spectacular. He and
his staff have hung 600 to 800 pieces each year for five years in a row, and during each of the last two shows they’ve sold
more than 180 works. Collectors have been purchasing multiple paintings—some as
holiday presents for loved ones and others as special gifts for themselves.
Artists buying other artists’ works

why so many small gems have been added to so many collections.
