Ceramics at Night The Magic of Art in the Making

STORY BY: SABRINA DEDEK AND DAKOTA GANGE

While in the ceramics department at the Benton Center, you can find artists creating. Students finishing their projects and learning to master techniques with clay. Taught by Renee McKitterick, ceramics at Linn Benton Community College is a way for students to produce creativity and therapeutically manipulate clay.

In the soft glow of the evening light are ceramic students out at night. With their ideas and tools alike, working at the Benton Center is a delight. Pinching and carving, these students' works are all but alarming.

As an academic advisor, I’m privileged to hear stories of what students want to achieve; What you know, what you don’t know, and what you want to know. In the Advising Center at LBCC, there are 3 areas we focus on: 1. Advising. Our motto - “We Advise. You Decide”. The concept is simple. Advisors share knowledge and experience, listen to your goals and give you advice on what makes sense for your education plan. Then you apply all this to your real life, daily desires, various balancing acts of jobs, family, sleeping in or whatever is needed for your health and well-being. So we’re on your side, but you choose the direction and speed. 2. Counseling, Wellness, Well-Being. Working with community partners, there are counselors available 24/7 to help you out. Call the Advising Center 541-917-4780. Monday through Friday, there are counselors on the Albany campus for urgent appointments (note that there may be a 15-20 minute wait.) Also, you can schedule an appointment ahead of time for counseling. Wellness discussions are also readily available. 3. Career Services. Researching possible careers, measurements of strengths and talents to match with possible jobs. Career skill-building resumes, job interview practice, career fair

and Career Exploration classes to more deeply consider all of the above. The search for knowledge - It is not a direct line. Yes, there are some folks who know exactly what they want to achieve by going to college. Many more folks have an idea, and then fill in the pieces as they travel along the college road. What helps you know what? Think about what works best for you for studying, for time management, for test taking. We know what works for us. Whether or not we admit it, we know where we need help or support. It’s just hard to ask for. And then there’s the perceived risk of asking a “stupid” question. What does “remote,” “virtual,” “online,” “hybrid,” “ F2F.,” mean? Related to classes). There is no such thing as a stupid question. You ask because you don’t know. So reach out to your advisor. Ask questions. So what if you don’t know what. We’ll figure it out together.

Roadrunner Explorers Takes Flight LBCC’s Co-curricular Gears up for Oregon Adventures

STORY BY LEAH BIESACK agenda. Bring your bestie, or go solo and meet

The school year is off and running, gathering some speed as we see Week 4 sitting pretty, just around the bend. You’re likely getting a little more settled as the schedule kinks get ironed and the time management gets dialed. What about the fun stuff, though? In case you’ve heard otherwise, let me set the record arrow-straight — LBCC isn’t strictly business. Need proof? Cue: Road Runner Explorers. Roadrunner Explorers is the co-curricular where adventure and social interaction get swirled in with seasonal fun, then topped with a sprinkling of Oregon history (not the textbook kind, I promise. Yawn, am I right?). Monthly excursions may include coastal trips, local hikes, city ventures, geographic wonders (geographic wonders, you guys!!), historic sites, and flower fields (crossing my fingers for the tulip festival in Spring.). Not into the hike, but excited for the marine science center? No sweat (literally)! Jump on the trips that work for you, skip the ones that don’t. The goal is to bring students (and faculty) together to have some fun outings outside of the academic environment, and outside of a strict

a new bestie. Anyone can join Roadrunner Explorers, and get this, you can bring your friends and family on these adventures! In fact, it’s encouraged! Because safety rules, the Explorers have implemented some safety rules. Members will be responsible for providing their own transportation to/from outings, as well as money for food, entry fees, and largerthan-life souvenirs. Don’t forget to pack those masks! Or just use the dirty one on the floor of your car. If you’re interested in joining, click the link to become an official member, then check out the list below of the upcoming adventures. Next outing is this Saturday, October 16th. It’s all sorts of festive, so you won’t want to miss it! Get signed up, then go find the Great Pumpkin. Click Here Still have some questions? Feel free to contact the advisors of Roadrunner Explorers: Beth Lyons: lyonsb@linnbenton.edu, Skye Wheeler: wheeles@linnbenton.edu

UPCOMING EVENTS Oct. 16, 10:00 - 11:00 AM — Greens Bridge Gardens Fall colors. Pumpkin patch. Small town. This would be the easiest way to turn your Dawson’s Creek dreams into a reality. (Dramatic love triangles will not be provided.) Nov. 13 — Newport Hatfield Marine Science Center Rainy season will be kicking off by then, so best to book some indoor getaways to save your sanity! Plus, science is cool no matter which way you slice it. (Reservations strongly recommended for this one.) Dec. 11 — Silverton Christmas Market What better way to celebrate the end of the term than a little trip to a European-inspired artisan market where all things are cozy and bright (no, really, they say they have millions of Christmas lights)? Grab your friends, do some holiday shopping, and snap a couple shots with Santa.

members a bit better, so here’s the inside scoop on the folks who make this whole operation run. The Commuter team is looking forward to a great year of top-tier reporting, writing, and photographing. And we’re thrilled to make your acquaintance. PHOTO: DAKOTA GANGE

Hello friends! My name is Dakota, and I’m the Editor-In-Chief here at The Commuter. It’s my second year working in the paper; last year I served as the Student Voice Editor where I gained lots of experience publishing all things student related. This year I am so excited to be in my current position, where I can continue to show off the great work of my team, students, staff and faculty of LB, and the surrounding communities. I am here to give tribute to you and your world. In my home life, I am a new mother; I have a perfect baby boy, Phoenix (“Nix”) - my greatest creation yet! My significant other and I are loving the parent-life. I also have two fur babies; a sweet pitbull and a boxer puppy who are so precious to me. I enjoy anything outdoor or music related. The beach, hiking, rocking out to live music, and traveling are how I like to spend my time.

PHOTO: LEAH BIESACK

Hey all, I’m Leah, the Arts and Entertainment Editor at The Commuter! This is my third term as a weekly contributor at our LBCC paper, writing on restaurants, movies, books, and humor, as well as covering local happenings and resources at LBCC and in the greater Willamette Valley. I’m an English major with hopes of making my way into the short-fiction world, or into the editing realm. When I’m not churning out articles and getting technical with grammar, I like to read, take my naughty rescue puppy for walks, and make greeting cards. I send a lot of mail.

My name is Avery Leon-Castillo and I'm a journalism major. This will be my first year at the Commuter and I am the Student Voice Editor so feel free to send in anything you'd like to share in future editions! I enjoy writing and photography, but most of all being with my cats, Lego and Teacup.

I traveled to Italy and Greece this past summer, and it was a beautiful experience! Additionally, I really enjoy spending time with my friends, investing in stocks, working out, listening to music, and writing. My latest hobby has been learning more about fixing cars.

This past summer I served as the Corvallis Knights Team Photographer. After I finish my AS, I plan to attend a university to complete my BS in film production. In my spare time I enjoy deepening my relationships with people and doing fun activities with my OSU college ministry, Epic.

Hi my name is Sabrina Dedek. I’m a student here at LBCC in Public Health, soon to transfer to OSU thanks to the guidance and brilliance of my advisor. I’m a mom to an amazing and clever 4-year-old daughter. I am a photographer and business owner of Bellatrix Photographic, specializing in portrait photography. I’m overjoyed to be a photographer for The Commuter -- seeing my pictures published is a living dream for me. I hope to capture news and events relevant to the unique and diverse student base at LBCC.

PHOTO: REBECCA FEWLESS

Rebecca is my name and design is my game. As the Commuter’s layout designer for the last four years, I’ve had many opportunities to put my talents on the front burner. I lay out each and every edition for The Commuter, make covers when needed, create the ADs, and occasionally work long hours to pull everything together before the deadline. When not designing, I’m working another job to make ends meet or simply doodling to ease my busy brain. If I somehow find more than five minutes of free time, I can be found snuggling my many animals and spending some much needed time with my partner.

Queer

Folk! STORY BY AVERY LEON-CASTILLO

In lieu of celebrating National Coming Out Day, which was this Monday, there are a few awesome queer people worth mentioning.

Lil Nas X is a Black gay man who had his claim to fame in 2019 for the well-loved song “Old Town Road.” He also came out in 2019 and has since been the center of much controversy. However, he is still an inspiration to many, many people as such a young Black artist who has won many awards and has multiple top-chart songs. He recently released an album, “Montero” which is his real name, and the album has been the topic of conversation for many people since it came out September 17. PHOTO: SABRINA DEDEK

This year the annual festival was compressed into a drive-through event that filled many bellies and brought smiles to those who attended. PHOTO: SABRINA DEDEK

The name Angelica Ross might not ring as many bells, but she is a transwoman who has been in many award-winning shows including “Pose,” “American Horror Story: 1984,” and “American Horror Story: Double Feature.” Not only is she a great actress but Ross is also a self-taught computer programmer and, in 2014, founded TransTech Social Enterprises. The company was made to be a nonprofit to help trans people train for jobs in the technology industry.

If you’ve seen “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” then you’re probably familiar with the character Theo Putnam, played by Lachlan Watson. Lachlan, who is just like their character in the four part show, is nonbinary. They are a budding performer who has been in other shows such as “Nashville” and “The Ultimate Life.” We have yet to see more from them! Not every queer person has an epic comingout story. Many have yet to come out! We all celebrate our queerness differently, but knowing about a few people who may be like you who are visibly successful can help you grow and understand your differences. You can also find other people part of your community who might help you discover a new part of your identity!

The Sweet Side of Second Street Corvallis’ Kell’s Coffee Is Home to All Drinks Creative, All Treats Unique

STORY BY AVERY LEON-CASTILLO Are you ever craving a specific type of coffee that is not only well-made, but also unique? Are you looking for a different shop to try that offers a little more than just coffee alone? Well, I know the perfect spot. Not only is the food and drink at this shop super yummy, but it’s also extremely reasonably priced! No more spending $11 at Starbucks for a medium coffee and pastry! Kell's Koffee is in downtown Corvallis, right on Second Street. This place has been around for a while, but not many people know about it yet. The man who runs this little shop, Dillon Kell, makes some crafty and creative beverages, and utilizes some recipes he learned from his home of Hawaii! Reviews from his shop say that Dillon is very sweet and sociable. “Dillon, who runs the shop not only makes one of the best lattes I have ever had… he was surely the

kindest soul serving up coffee I have ever met.” says one reviewer on Resturantji. Most of the reviews are similar to this, saying that Dillon talks to people “as though he knew them personally.” Kell’s has a huge variety of flavors. The little poster on the window of his little

shop boasts flavors ranging from miso to Nutella to lavender! The shop owner also does pre-orders of poke bowls and spam musubi on Saturdays. During the summer, he was selling Hawaiian shaved ice which was extremely popular and what many have said is some of the best in Oregon. Pastries in the regular rotation are Dillon’s butter mochi, as well as his chocolate peanut butter cookies -- both recipes are native to Hawaii. This shop has keto and iced options for all drinks. Kell’s hours are 10am-4pm, Wednesday-Friday, and 12pm-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. You can reach the owner through Instagram @kellskoffee or by email at Kellskoffee@gmail.com (He responds in a timely manner!). Better yet, take a stroll downtown for a unique treat and chat in person! PHOTOS: KELL'S KOFFEE

Butter Mochi - a Hawaiian dessert, similar to Japanese mochi, but it is more of a baked vanilla cake-mix version. It tastes like an American Blondie or a brownie. Poke - a Hawaiian meal that originated from early Polynesian people; it’s essentially a simple dish made with chopped raw seafood like tuna, octopus, or mussels. They’re marinated with soy or sesame sauce and mixed with onions and rice. Spam Musubi - a snack that was originated in Hawaii during WW2. It is similar to a Japanese snack called onigiri which is packed rice with some salmon, pickled plum, or tuna inside or on top, then wrapped with nori, which is seaweed. 'Ten Rings' Nabs a Near Five Stars

REVIEW BY

STEVEN PRYOR

@STEVENPRR2PRYOR

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After being delayed earlier this year due to concerns of the novel coronavirus/ COVID-19 pandemic, this film has finally seen release and crafted another strong origin story for the franchise and proves to be another successful experiment in Phase 4 for Marvel Studios. The story follows Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) as he tries to find his place in the world and confront his family history by facing his father Wenwu Xu, aka The Mandarin (Ken Leung). Crossing paths with both his aunt (Michelle Yeoh) and his childhood friend Katy (singer/actress Awkwafina); Shang-Chi must decide to continue the steps laid out before him or forge his own path as the

rightful heir to a fighting style based around an artifact known as the Ten Rings. The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (who previously worked on smaller-scale dramas such as “The Glass Castle” and “Just Mercy”) shares many similarities to early films with Jackie Chan in the lead role. On a budget of $150 million, a host of creative action set pieces ensue in this modern-day martial arts fantasy. From an over-the-top fight inside a bus in San Francisco to an escape from an underground fighting ring in Macau, the film’s 132-minute runtime contains a myriad of exciting martial arts duels; all leading to a climactic final battle between ShangChi and Wenwu Xu. One admitted issue with the film is its pacing- not so much for the length of the film, but several stretches of exposition could have been reworked to f low a bit better. That said, the

film is another admirable experiment in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, building on the success of the standalone “Black Widow” film and a host of TV spinoffs on Disney Plus earlier this year (their next film, “Eternals” is slated for November 5). With the film handily shattering the Labor Day weekend box office record, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is a martial arts spectacular for Marvel and is definitely recommended for fans from all corners of the Pacific.

Pokémon UNITE Still Delivers POKÉMON UNITE

REVIEW BY

STEVEN PRYOR

PUBLISHER: The Pokémon Company DEVELOPER: Tencent Games/TIMI PLATFORM:Nintendo Switch (Coming to iOS and Android September 22) ESRB RATING: E10+ MY RATING: ★★★☆☆

@STEVENPRR2PRYOR

(Note: This review is based on the most recent build of this game available as of this writing. Some features may be dif ferent depending on which version you’re playing.) “Pokémon UNITE” is the latest spinoff in the long-running “Pokémon” franchise, developed by Tencent Games and their subsidiary TIMI. Though not the disaster many fans were worried about upon its initial reveal last year, the game is a f lawed; but ultimately decent title among the many entries the series has spawned. The game is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) title in the vein of games such as “League of Legends” and “DOTA 2.” Taking place in the Aeos Island Archipelago, you take control of a selection of Pokémon to engage in team-based matches. Rather than the tower defense that other established

MOBA titles have, gameplay involves combating opposing Pokémon to collect “UNITE points;” which must then be banked in rival teams’ goals. Whichever team has the highest score at the end of a 5-10 minute match wins. Even if a player of the game has limited knowledge of MOBAs; the game is thankfully a solid entry point with plenty of variety for longtime Pokémon fans. Old favorites like Pikachu and Charizard share the battlefield with newer monsters such as Greninja and Cinderace (with more to come in future updates). The game has bright and colorful

sports roundup: Roadrunners Win 12th Straight; Defeat Clark 3-0 VANCOUVER, Wash. — LinnBenton defeated Clark 3-0 Friday night to remain unbeaten in NWAC South Region play. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22, and 2514. The Roadrunners (19-2 overall,

9-0 NWAC South) host Chemeketa Wednesday, Oct, 13 at 6:30 p.m. It will be Linn-Benton's "Dig Pink" night and all gate receipts will be donated to the Side-Out Foundation to support breast cancer research.

graphics, and though the framerate is typically higher on home mode than portable/tabletop mode for Nintendo Switch; the experience is fortunately quite stable for the most part. That said, the game has f laws that keep it from reaching the heights of the series’ best spinoffs (such as “New Pokémon Snap” from earlier this year). If you are a relative newcomer to MOBA games, some Pokémon have higher learning curves than others; and some actions such as blocking goals can be tricky for new players. The game also has an array of microtransactions to acquire

Pokémon and gear; marking a huge temptation to spend real-world money on an otherwise free-to-play title. Still, the game admittedly has potential to grow from this point. Early adopters can get access to the lightning-quick Zeraora; and the Switch version will have crossplay and cross-progression with the upcoming ports on Apple iOS and Android devices. Though the title doesn’t excel at this stage of release, “Pokémon UNITE” is in league with other mobile spinoffs; so it’s at least worth trying at this time.

with 11 kills and Kennedy Kantola and Eva Buford had seven kills apiece. Taya Manibusan chipped in six kills to go with a team-high 14 digs. Zaley Bennett recorded 19 assists for the match.
