Bright orange and shiny red leaves, fluorescent green lawns and blustery winds. Does it sound like fall? Do you like fall? Are you one of the millions of people who struggle with SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder? Do you see the colors of fall or are you more aware of the ubiquitous grey and ever earlier dark evenings? Impacts of SAD are more common in the Pacific Northwest than in the Rockies or Southern states where the average days of sunshine far outweigh us. Western Oregon is not known for its sunshiny fall and winter. Or even spring, for that matter. SAD is a type of mood disorder, commonly seen as depression, arising during the winter months in the northern hemisphere. SAD is caused by a disturbance in the circadian system of the body. For diagnosis and treatment plans for SAD, schedule an appointment with a medical professional. The following information comes from the Mayo Clinic and National Institute of Mental Health. Common Symptoms ► Feeling depressed on most of the days, during the season ► Reduced energy ► Loss of concentration and interest in activities ► Trouble sleeping/oversleeping Self-care ► Keep your house well lit ► Sit closer to bright windows both at home and in office ► Take a walk outside each day ·► Exercise regularly ► Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, tai chi and meditation The above strategies can help when you have a SAD diagnosis, or if you’re sad because it’s fall and grey, wet and cold. Another recommendation is spending time under/next to a full spectrum
light. The LBCC Library has a “room of requirement” where you can drop in (space limited) to have a quiet space, do yoga or turn on the full spectrum light. A few other ideas for positive distractions to beat the winter blues: ► Planning time to get away to sunny spots (Central Oregon, Northern California, or to another sunny place). ► Changing your environment -- even if it’s not to someplace sunnier. Check out a new city, explore a new trail or visit a friend. It can be helpful to focus and engage in a different environment. ► Talking with friends, family, roommates or social media connections. It can be for social connection or, as I’ve written before, a “healthy whine.” Sometimes you just need to complain, kvetch, caterwaul, swear, exclaim or bitch and moan. “This sucks. I’m tired of being cold. I hate walking through puddles. My shoes are always wet.” I gotta admit, this is part of how I cope. I feel a bit better after acknowledging how much I detest wet socks and damp smells. ► Eating nurturing foods, like hot soups. ► Practicing meditation. Yep, meditation pretty much has a positive place in any daily health routine. If you haven’t tried it, I double dare you. If you can take even 5 minutes every day for a week, I guarantee you’ll notice a difference in your ability to self-reflect, slow down and be connected to your mind and body. If you absolutely cannot sit still for 5 minutes, you can also try a walking meditation. Be well, be warm, be kind.

Facing Your Fears Darryl Bellamy Jr. Gives a Zoom Presentation About Overcoming Your Fears and Becoming Your Best Self bad days,” and “Consider the source [of my
STORY BY fear] and if I should listen to it.” AVERY LEON-CASTILLO Bellamy had multiple activities for zoom Last week LBCC had a very special guest speaker host a zoom workshop geared towards helping one face and overcome their fears. Darryl Bellamy Jr. has traveled the country. His goal? To inspire students to be their best selves. Bellamy shared some insight into his past and how he overcame his fears, and said multiple times that his goal is “not fearlessness, but more fearless moments.” Tangled in a motivational energy, he used many different visual and audible additions, and he included multiple personal anecdotes from his past and from conferences he’s held in the past. A dubbed important experience in his life; While in his junior year of college at the University of North Carolina, Bellamy ran for class president. He and his team lost the election, and “it didn’t matter.” “The dots will find a way to connect,” Bellamy says. SLC Executive Assistant, Danae Fouts, shares their favorite Bellamy quotes; “Failure is an event, not Permanent,” “If you are here, then you have made it through 100% of your
go-ers to participate in, including sharing “DTWG” in the chat when something someone related to was heard, which stands for “damn that was good.” It was clear that Bellamy is not one to mince words; he had many prompts that aimed to make the individual feel vulnerable. In one prompt, Bellamy asks the audience to share a time when their worst-case scenario didn’t come true. LB student and SLC Campus Outreach Director,Will Shields, was the only one to speak up; “I imagined that when I applied to be the SLC Outreach Director, I imagined I would have to get out in public and socialize face to face with a bunch of people, and that’s not the position. I mostly run our social media presence, and I’m glad I applied.” In an activity about sharing fears, Bellamy says, “the more we’re able to share, the more you're able to identify what those [fears] things are.” Check out his book, ‘Waking Up Chase: One Student's Journey to Awakening His Potential' at www.goodreads.com/book/

THE SHINING - 1980
FRIDAY THE 13TH - 1980
Crystal Lake's history of murder doesn't deter counselors from setting up a summer camp in the woodsy area. Superstitious locals warn against it, but the fresh-faced young people -- Jack (Kevin Bacon), Alice (Adrienne King), Bill (Harry Crosby), Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) and Ned (Mark Nelson) -- pay little heed to the old-timers. They then find themselves stalked by a brutal killer. As they're slashed, shot, and stabbed, the counselors struggle to stay alive against a merciless opponent. RENT ON: Amazon Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and YouTube ($3.99)
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to cure his writer's block. He settles in along with his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and his son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), who is plagued by psychic premonitions. As Jack's writing goes nowhere and Danny's visions become more disturbing, Jack discovers the hotel's dark secrets and begins to unravel into a homicidal maniac hell-bent on terrorizing his family. WATCH ON: HBO Max RENT ON: Amazon Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and YouTube ($3.99)
SCREAM - 1996
Wes Craven re-invented and revitalised the slasher-horror genre with this modern horror classic, which manages to be funny, clever, and scary, as a fright-masked knifewielding maniac stalks high-school students in middle-class suburbia. Craven is happy to provide both tension and self-parody as the body count mounts - but the victims aren't always the ones you'd expect. RENT ON: Amazon Video and Apple TV ($3.99)
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - 1984
In Wes Craven's classic slasher film, several Midwestern teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a disfigured midnight mangler who preys on the teenagers in their dreams -- which, in turn, kills them in reality. After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by her and her friends' parents may be the key to unraveling the mystery, but can Nancy and her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp) solve the puzzle before it's too late? WATCH ON: HBO Max RENT ON: Amazon Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and YouTube ($3.99)
