The Farmer's Market located downtown Albany, Oregon, on SW 4th Ave and SW Ellsworth St is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vendors come to provide vegetables, fruits, flowers, honey, meats, treats, and many others from local farms and businesses.

Families and pets of all kinds are welcome.

Each year has a theme. This year was a celebration of Jeepers Creepers. The Haunted House is a charity event and will be benefiting local food banks as well as the Morningstar Grange.

creative and chaotic, and this makes her laugh.

Pre-pandemic, I worked in the Albany Advising Center office, or at the Health Occupations Center (HOC).

My primary job was to • listen, • lean my head on a lap, • turn my head sideways with a cute little ear flip, • do tricks for treats

Now I get to lie on the bed and watch squirrels, birds and an occasional deer out the window. I share the “office” with my pal, Cauldron. He’s new to advising so he does not quite get the whole “education and personal growth” thing. He prefers play, pestering and prancing.

What I’m learning from the “home office” is how important communication is and the words that are used. My two legger spends a lot of time on the phone or computer. You cannot smell a person by through these machines. Sometimes you don’t even get to see a face. It seems really, really important to use specific words. My favorite 4 letter word is “walk”.

I hear happy tones in voices on the phone, and sometimes sad or confused voices. I think my two legger is a good listener. And she seems to do

a lot of dancing with her fingers on the desktop. Sometimes I have to chew on her shoes to get her attention.

Mostly, I like having company at home and I get lots of short walks, but I really miss all the people and smells at LBCC. There are no squished french fries on the floor at home.

Cauldron:

I knew Fenway would take up all the writing space! I like our home office because there are so many more papers to shred. I also like to walk across that keyboard thing and watch how the screen changes. And the two legger throws socks at me. Haha.

The Show Must Go On LBCC Slowly Reintroduces Sports Back to Campus

STORY BY: HIKARI KAWAI Linn-Benton Community College sports are up and running with exceptions and guidelines to follow due to COVID-19 and for the general safety and health of everyone.

Sport’s Director Mark Majeski said that there will only be practices for

now with the women's basketball and volleyball, and men’s basketball and baseball. LBCC is following NWAC’s developed guidelines for COVID-19.

Competitions will not be happening any time soon, with the possibility for competitions starting in February.

Regardless, the student-athletes are excited to get back into it and actually be able to meet physically. Before any of the in-person practices started, they

Andrea Barnhurst Describes Her Experience Being Blind in a Pandemic

My mom, Andrea Barnhurst, is a woman who is blind in this pandemic.

When asking her a few questions over the phone, she says that she's coping okay with this pandemic. It's stressful, but she's doing the best she can. It's hard and challenging because people don't really understand that her guide dog doesn't know how to social distance nor what the marks mean on the floor.

She hasn't been in a situation where people are treating her any differently than when the pandemic wasn't around. The only difference mentioned is that people aren't helping her find things she needs in the stores. Now they just point and say, "It's over there.”

What's getting to Andrea is the lack of socialization and the fact that she can't recognize anyone she knows in the masks. It's also hard trying to wear glasses with the masks due to the fact that they get foggy all the time.

She fears going into a store alone with the struggles of social distancing, her depth reception gone, and the lack of exposing her guide dog, Bali, in stores.

She also finds there's less people around when walking outside with her guide dog. The outside feels like indoors with the amount of people.

are catching COVID-19, getting exposed to someone who has COVID and not knowing it, and then exposing others.

She feels like she's losing her independence because she can't go to stores and places like she did. She always needs her daughter or husband to drive her there. She worries about the lack of activity level with her guide dog when the numbers get higher. She worries about her friends and family more than herself when it comes to COVID-19.

She feels that there is a different energy in the air when she's walking with her guide dog. She doesn't exactly know what this energy is, but she can tell that Bali is feeling stressed and concerned just

by holding onto the leash.

Andrea explained how it's not easy trying to figure out where people are in the stores and maintaining social distance guidelines is hard with her and the guide dog. Wearing masks makes her senses different from what they used to be.

Her family is worried for her more than usual. What she is doing differently to keep her and her family safe is to wear a mask in public, work remotely, when she goes into a store she doesn't touch everything, washing her hands frequently, and minimizing her time in the stores.

Majeski also said, “The bottom line message has been: we need to do the things that are expected of us so we can keep everyone safe… We have asked them (studentathletes) all to do their part when they are not on campus. We’ve begun to repeat the mantra, ‘If we stay safe, we can keep playing.’ ”

The coaches are now doing daily symptom checks with everyone.

And teams are now practicing set up in modules/ or smaller groups at a one time, with no two teams practicing in the same area at the same time. However the setup and how things are managed will depend on how practices are being done may change in the future.

A few of the student-athletes on the women's basketball team said that they were really excited to even be able to practice again. Though there will be no competitions they are grateful to have the opportunity to finally be practicing.

Throughout the summer many of the sports teams were doing zoom meetings

so they could get to know one another as this is a new year with new studentathletes. Women’s basketball head coach Jerod Gibson also said that he is excited for this group because of the chemistry of this team, and though they were not able to meet in person till recently.

The head volleyball coach, Jayme Frazier mentioned that this year they are really motivated to play again and finally getting the chance to get back into shape. She said, “this group is athletic and we have much more depth. We have players who can play two positions well which may come in handy as we will have to adjust constantly through these months ahead. We are all staying optimistic and keeping our sights on a healthy competitive season and a strong successful academic year.”

The baseball team has been seen practicing outside on and off, whilst the men’s basketball team also practicing typically after the women’s basketball team is finished or in the mornings.

LBCC has a Safety Committee whose goal is to identify and eliminate risks on our campus, and to prevent accidents and illnesses through the involvement of employees, managers, and students in an effort to provide a safe and healthy place to both work and learn. A "Safety Suggestion Box" is available to provide a way for you to communicate your safety concerns, hazards spotted, and suggestions for promoting safety.

Sonic the Hedgehog became a huge success in the early ’90s and became Sega’s mascot. Logically, a sequel was in the process. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was being developed by both Sonic Team (which was in Japan) as well as the Sega Technical Insitute (in the US). Yuji Naka, the creator of Sonic and the lead programmer of Sonic 2, had to travel between these two locations many times. One day, as he was waiting for his flight to Japan, he came up with a game that centered around flying. The character designer of Sonic, Naoto Oshima, loved the idea and they, along with Sonic Team, brainstormed ideas on how it would work. They decided to have it take place in dreams and development of the game began after the release of Sonic & Knuckles in 1994. On August 20, 1996, “NiGHTS Into Dreams” was released in the US for the Sega Saturn. The game received a ton of praise. Levi Buchanan from IGN even said this, “If you have a Saturn and its without NiGHTS, your collection is woefully incomplete.” So, is the game what dreams are made of? Or is it a NiGHTmare?

I’ll be reviewing the Steam version which contains both the original Sega Saturn version and Remastered. I will be reviewing the original Saturn version. so you may not experience the same issue I had.

When a human sleeps, their dreams take place either in Nightopia or Nightmare which are the two halves of the dream world. Wiseman the Wicked, the ruler of Nightmare, is draining the energy of those who sleep to conquer the two halves of the dream world and eventually the world. He creates Nightmaren monsters to accomplish this including NiGHTS and Reala. NiGHTS, however, rebels and is

Meanwhile, in the real world, in a city called Twin Seeds, two teenagers are going through a rough time. Elliot Edwards, a basketball player, and his friends are challenged by another group of players and face a huge defeat. Claris Sinclair, a talented singer, auditions for a singing role on stage but she gets stage fright during the audition and does horribly. When the two slept that night, they ended up in the Nightmare side of the dream world. The two escape to Nightopia and find out they wield the rare Red Ideya of Courage which is the only type of Ideya Wiseman cannot steal. While in Nightopia, they free NiGHTS who tells

them about Wiseman and his goals. Elliot and Claris team up with NiGHTS to stop Wiseman, recover the other colors of Ideya, and return balance to the dream world.

I love the story in this game, especially the ending. The growth the characters have during the game is quite impressive for a game like this. My one problem is that I wish it was explained as you play the game. In order to know what is going on story-wise, you’re going to need to read the manual. I give the story a solid A. The goal of each level is to collect the four types of dream energy (White meaning Purity, Green meaning Wisdom, Yellow meaning Hope, and Blue meaning Intelligence) from Wizeman’s Ideya Capture by collecting 20 blue chips and

taking them to the capture. In order to get these chips, you simply must fly to them as NiGHTS to collect them. If you fly in a loop, all the items within that area will go to you. The more rings you go through or items you collect in quick succession, the more points you get which will help you in getting a good rank. After doing so, you will face a boss battle where you deal with one of Wizeman’s Nightmarens. I found the gameplay quite fun but unfortunately, I have a few complaints about it. The game is very poor at explaining the game’s mechanics so those who play the game blindly will be very confused about what they’re supposed to do. My other complaint is there are some portions of the game where I face extreme lag and the background becomes glitchy. Typically when I play games on my computer and I face this, I blame my computer not being powerful enough but it was running fine despite the lag. I tried the remastered version to see if I would experience the same lag and, sure enough, I didn’t. This makes me think that they intentionally kept the extreme lag to keep it accurate to the original. While I do understand this, I will have to dock the gameplay down due to this issue. I give the gameplay an A-.

The soundtrack is fine. It does have some great music that I really like such as “Dreams Dreams,” “Sowing Seeds,” and “NiGHTS,” but I feel the rest is fine.

I give it an A-. To conclude, I really liked this game. I recommend reading the instructions before playing it because you’ll get extremely confused by both the story and gameplay without it. Unless you are someone who prefers to play the original (like myself) I recommend playing the Remastered version as it’s a lot less laggy and prettier. I give the game an 8.5/10.

How on earth do you start a review on Samba De Amigo? Well, it began as an arcade machine on December 21, 1999.

A year later, Samba De Amigo, a rhythm game, was released on the Dreamcast. The game received very positive reviews. It won “Best Social/Casual/Puzzle/Family Game” in the 2000 Game Critics Award as well as “Best Console Puzzle Game” in Gamespot’s Best and Worst of the Year. In 2008, a port of the game was released on the Wii. The port of the game wasn’t as well-received as the original due to the Wii’s controls. So, is the game an amigo o enemigo? (That is probably the only Spanish joke I can come up with.)

Note: I will be reviewing the Wii version.

You play as Amigo, a maraca-playing monkey. The main point of the game is to shake the Wii remote and nunchuck (you can play with two Wii remotes if you want) in the direction of the six colored circles with the rhythm of the music to gain points. The better you do, the higher your rank gets. Characters (including your Mii) will also dance along with you as you play.

There isn’t a story in this story. There are characters like Amiga, Linda, and Rio but they don’t do much besides dance along with you. I honestly feel these characters were a missed opportunity. I would love

to see more of these characters and their background (except Linda, she makes me uncomfortable). I give the story a C+.

There are several modes you can play.

There is the Career mode where you can play several songs. As you play, you will unlock more songs and progress through the mode. There is also the single-player mode where you can play the songs you’ve already played in different difficulty settings as well as some minigames. In the minigames, you can play Guacamole (Get it? It’s whack-amole.), Strike a Pose, Volleyball, etc. The main problem with the Career mode and the minigames in general is the Wii Remote’s motion controls. The moves you make with the remote will occasionally not register. The Strike a Pose is basically unbeatable since the Wii Remote won’t let you do certain poses. The Volleyball game doesn’t require any motion controls thankfully; however, a single game of that takes forever to do (either that or I am just bad at volleyball). I can’t say much about the Multiplayer as I haven’t played much of it. So overall, while the game can be fun, the motion controls ruin it. I give the gameplay a B-.

Now for the soundtrack. Honestly, I am not familiar with Latin music (or whatever it’s called), but I really do like the music Samba De Amigo uses. It has songs like the “Macarena,” “Bamboleo”(my favorite), “Cha Cha,” etc. My problem with the game’s soundtrack is its lack of originality.

The game also has this style to it that is both absurd and yet charming. Some people may like the style the game goes for but I am a bit conflicted on whether or not I like it myself. To conclude, this game

is….fine. The story seems like a missed opportunity and the gameplay is ruined thanks to the motion controls. The game is saved by it’s sweet soundtrack despite it being unoriginal for the most part. I give the game a 6.5/10.

After the smash success of the “Hamilton” stage play, a filmed version of one of its acclaimed performances in October 2016 has arrived for streaming on Disney Plus. Even after the massive success of the musical, the play is a mesmerizing experience that is not to be missed.

The play’s filmed performance was originally slated for October 2021, but was instead released on Disney Plus as a result of the novel coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic. Even with a month’s subscription being a fraction of the cost of admission to one of the play’s performances, this

groundbreaking musical has come at the perfect time to find a new audience.

The story is a fictionalized account of the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton, played by singer/actor Lin Manuel-Miranda in his star-making role.

Though set in the 18th century; the play has a unique application of modern music styles to symbolize the change and upheaval going on at that point in history. The runtime may be a hearty 160 minutes (complete with an intermission), but it certainly doesn’t feel that way. The energy infused in the songs and performances is simply breathtaking.

On a budget of $75 million, the play also sports lavish production values; reflected in the choreography, sets and period costumes. Even when streaming on

your preferred screen, the play’s larger than life scale shines through to bring the stage experience home.

Whether you’ve experienced the stage play or want to see it for the first time, “Hamilton” is a historical masterpiece

that’s well worth viewing on Disney Plus.

Coming at a moment that echoes the spirit of its setting, the words of the play resonate beyond its story: “History has its eyes on you.”

Thirty-five years have passed since the release of “Super Mario Bros.” on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Since then, the title is seen not just as the one that helped rescue video games from obscurity after the crash of 1983, it helped provide the basis for a franchise that still continues today. While the milestone 35th anniversary has seen numerous games help commemorate the occasion; one in particular has proven to be a fun surprise: “Super Mario Bros. 35.”

The game is essentially the classic “Super Mario Bros.” as a “battle royale” title: as one of 35 simultaneous players, you

must progress as far as you can without being eliminated. Though the appeal of the original “Super Mario Bros.” certainly hasn’t waned; developer Arika has managed to find a fantastic way of introducing the game to more people and to put a fresh spin on a timeless classic. This title was even reportedly in development before another battle royale spinoff to a classic game; “Tetris 99.”

As a battle royale centered around “Super Mario Bros.,” the gameplay is simple on the surface; but with whole new layers of challenge. You can spin an “item roulette” with your coins, complete daily missions; and send the enemies you defeat after your opponents. A lot of the fun comes from how crazy a match can get; recalling the multiplayer modes of the original games.

Why We Need to Vote!

without flaws: as of this writing, there have been problems with cheating and hackers, as well as a user interface in the lobby that makes it difficult to log back in for a rematch or even go back to the main menu without restarting the game.

Still, the title is another great way of putting a fresh spin on a classic favorite; and is a testament to the lasting appeal of “Super Mario Bros.” Though the game will only be available to play until March 2021; it’s still an indicator that Mario will still be entertaining young and old players alike for another 35 years.

Overall, “Super Mario Bros. 35” is an ideal way to help celebrate Mario’s 35th anniversary; and a “Bowser-sized” spin on the battle royale party game. It’s definitely worth playing while it lasts.

GENDER & SEXUALITY ALLIANCE Strength in diversity! LBCC’s GSA is for students, staff, faculty and alumni of LinnBenton Community College who are members or allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and questioning community.
