Founder: Bill Williams

Hello Friends!

Another year is about the close her doors. I can’t believe how fast 2024 has happened. We voted in a new (kind of) president and our area saw a devastating flood that claimed lives, homes and businesses. Everyone at The Loafer is praying for all of the victims of the flood and their families.

November is a time to be thankful and in spite of the hard times our area has faced lately I do believe we have plenty in which to be thankful. I would encourage each of us to remember that and to do what we can to help out our neighbors in any way we can.

We are very proud to bring you this year’s issue for the holidays. Our theme this year is “Hometown Christmas”. I absolutely love the feel of local small town holiday traditions. I know that shopping online is very easy to do but I ask…………actually beg of you to please shop local as much as possible. These small and family owned businesses need you much more than those large big box stores.

I pray that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and a very merry Christmas! Let us remember the reason for the season.

Thank you for your continued support!

Kick off the Holidays With a Festive Cookie Recipe Exchange

When we think about the holidays, a lot of the special moments we remember most fondly from years past involve sharing food with loved ones — from festive cookie exchanges to the scents and smells of familyfavorite dishes and desserts, to warm beverages on cold nights. That’s why McCormick is dishing up these cooking tips for creating special moments:

• Incorporate seasonal herbs, spices and seasonings like sage, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon and nutmeg into your cooking and baking to provide longlasting fresh flavors, vibrant colors and appetizing aromas.

• Use ready-to-make dry recipe mixes, such as turkey or brown gravy, to easily create perfectly blended flavors for sauces that elevate your holiday meals.

• Rely on extracts like pure vanilla and peppermint to enhance the flavors and aromas of holiday treats.

This holiday season, the McCormick brand is also going on a virtual quest for the best holiday cookie recipe through the McCormick Cookie Quest contest. If you have a winning cookie recipe, consider joining in the fun. Official Rules and entry instructions can be found by visiting: mccormick.com/cookie-

quest-terms-and-conditions. [NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Starts 11/19/24; ends 12/8/24. Sponsor: McCormick & Company.]

In the spirit of the virtual cookie recipe exchange, McCormick is partnering with famed bakery Milk Bar and its rule-breaking, award-winning founder and CEO, Christina Tosi, to create and share Milk Bar x McCormick Candy Cane Pretzel Bark Cookies. On Dec. 4, which is National Cookie Day, select Milk Bar locations in New York City, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. will give away these scrumptious cookies to the first 100 customers, while supplies last. The limited-time cookie will also be on sale at select locations starting on National Cookie Day through December 31. And as part of the collaboration, McCormick and Milk Bar are also sharing the recipe, so you can make these delectable cookies at home!

Ingredients:

• 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened

• 3/4 cup granulated sugar

• 1/2 cup light brown sugar

• 1 large egg

• 1 teaspoon McCormick Pure Peppermint Extract

• 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract

• 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt

• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 cups white chocolate chips

• 1/4 cup plus 3 tablespoons McCormick Candy Cane Sugar, divided

• 1 1/2 cups mini pretzels

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray two half-sheet pans with no-stick cooking spray or line with parchment or silicone baking mats. Mix butter and sugars in large bowl with heavy spatula for about 2 minutes until well blended. Add egg and extracts, stirring until combined and fluffy, about 1 minute.

2. Mix flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda in medium bowl. Add dry ingredients to butter and sugar mixture, stirring just until combined. Stir in white chocolate chips, 3 tablespoons of the Candy Cane Sugar and mini pretzels, mixing until evenly blended.

3. Place remaining 1/4 cup Candy Cane Sugar in medium bowl. Use a 1/3-cup measuring cup or 2 3/4-ounce cookie scoop to portion dough into balls. Toss dough balls in Candy Cane Sugar to coat and place 2 to 3 inches apart on prepared baking pans.

4. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, until edges are golden brown. Cool completely before serving.

Tip: Can’t get your hands on McCormick Candy Cane Sugar?

Increase McCormick Peppermint Extract to 1 1/2 teaspoons, stir in 2 tablespoons of red colored sugar along with the chocolate chips, then use 1/4 cup red colored sugar to roll cookies before baking.

“The holiday season is all about sharing. That’s why we’re so excited to share one of our favorite holiday cookie recipes and encourage creative bakers all around the country to do the same,” says Giovanna DiLegge, vice president of Marketing, North American Consumer at McCormick.

Johnson City Welcomes Holiday with Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony

Johnson City invites the community to usher in the holiday season at the Candy Land Christmas Grand Tree Lighting Ceremony. The festivities are set for Saturday, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at King Commons, 112 N. Commerce St.

The celebration will begin with a special musical performance by students from Lamar Elementary School. Following the performance, City officials and attendees will join together for the countdown to illuminate more than 180 uniquely decorated Candy Land Christmas trees, including the community tree. As in previous years, King Commons and Founders Park will be aglow with holiday cheer. New for 2024 is the addition of decorated trees lining Main Street, the Buffalo Street pocket park, and along the path in Majestic Park.

“We are thrilled to welcome residents and visitors to this cherished event that brings the community together and officially marks the start of the holiday season in Johnson City,” said

Main Street Director Lindsey Jones.

“The sight of sparkling trees lighting up our city is magical.”

This year, the Grand Tree Lighting Ceremony coincides with Small Business Saturday, emphasizing the importance of supporting local businesses as holiday shopping begins.

“Pairing the tree lighting with Small Business Saturday is a great way to celebrate community spirit,” Jones added. “It’s a perfect time to enjoy the lights and support the many wonderful shops and restaurants that make Johnson City special.”

The Candy Land Christmas trees are decorated by local businesses and non-profit organizations, showcasing the creativity and holiday cheer of the community. New this year, the Johnson City Junior Council — comprised of selected area sophomores and juniors — will vote for their favorite tree. In addition, Candy Land Christmas will continue the tradition of a People’s Choice

Award. Online voting will take place Nov. 30-Dec. 15. The first-place winner will be awarded a complimentary tree for the 2025 Candy Land Christmas.

To vote, visit: www.johnsoncitytn.org/treevoting.

The decorated trees will remain on

display until Jan. 5.

The Candy Land Christmas event is made possible by the generous support of Bank of Tennessee, BrightRidge, Appalachian Maid Services, State of Franklin Healthcare Associates, and TownView Senior Living.

Social Sentiments

Startling Social

Imagine checking your notifications and seeing that someone has viewed a video you posted. This person is not only not following you, they have you blocked. So how were they able to see your video? A burner account (an account that is only used for the purposes of viewing profiles that person would normally not have access to) allowed access to your profile and everything you've posted.

Using a burner account can often leave a trail. For instance, if you post a TikTok video on Facebook and someone views that video, TikTok will reveal the account information for that viewer. Comparable to snapping a twig in the forest while trying to hide, liking or viewing a post that you should not normally have access to will eventually get you caught. After you have been caught, the victim tends to feel less safe.

Someone is constantly watching and the victim now feels on constant alert. The victim may never know why the other person feels the need to know every single detail about their life. Social media profiles are used to create connections, but the person being stalked would rather not connect with you. Minding your own business and letting them live their life instead of chomping at the bit for their next post will serve you well.

Internet users should never have to live in fear. Placing them in a situation where they have no idea what they can do to stop trouble from finding them puts undue stress on an undeserving person. Before you click on that profile, consider the impact your actions will have on them and how easily you will get caught. What will you say when confronted about your actions?

My adventure with The Loafer has come to an end. This was a decision I did not take lightly, but after much thought I feel it's time to exit stage left. I will never forget the day my friend Bryan Stevens, now the Editor of The Erwin Record, asked me if I was interested in writing a movie review for The Loafer, as the original owner, the late wonderful Bill Williams, was needing a movie reviewer. I jumped at the chance and the rest is history. My column was originally called Screen Scenes, but in addition to writing about movies, I also covered television, local actors, FanBoy conventions, and even the return of the ETSU Marching Bucs. Due to writing about more than movies, I decided a name change was in order, so I chose Pop Life, after the Prince song, as I felt the name covered all entertainment genres. My very first review for

Pop Life

The End of an Era

The Loafer was "Batman Returns," so that reveals how long I have been part of this publication. This wonderful gig even led to appearances on WJHL-TV as part of their early morning show discussing the latest movies.

As a movie fan, I always took the approach of wanting to like a movie before the theater darkened instead of waiting to "pick it apart." More often than not, I always found something good, except for a glaring few instances, to like about the movies I viewed, and never wanted to be called a critic. I prefer movie reviewer, and still do. Of course, like many movie fans, there are certain films I will never forget seeing on the big screen for the first time when I began this column."Jurassic Park," "The Lord of the Rings" film series, and "The Dark Knight" are just three examples. When 2020 rolled around, none of us expected to be quarantined due to the COVID pandemic, which closed movie theaters. The fact I no longer had access to one of my favorite places was frustrating and heartbreaking. However, streaming new movies and television shows was a life saver until theaters once again were able to open. The pandemic had a huge impact on theaters, and I encourage you to return to cinemas if you still haven't. There is

still nothing like sharing a cinematic experience with friends and strangers that you just can't get at home. I want to thank previous Loafer owners Luci Tate, Kimberly Dawn Wilson Santucci, and current owner Lisa Durbin for allowing me to do this column, and to JB Forrester for making

Pop Life look good. Over the years, I hope you have enjoyed Screen Scenes and Pop Life, and thank you for your support. I chose the art this week to reflect my first review in this publication. As always, see you at the movies!

The Diary of The Twelve Days of Christmas

Hello friends and loved ones! In the many years I’ve been writing for The Loafer I have tackled the subject of the Christmas season time and time again. However, in my opinion, I do not think I ever did anything better on the subject than this piece that you’re about to read, which is appearing again in this column this season for the first time in years. A very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all.

December 25

Dear Diary,

Here we are, Christmas day! My wife and I have had a wonderful Christmas! We had a marvelous meal and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. However, we're doing something different this year. We're going to roll our gifts out over the 12 days of Christmas. Should be exciting, and perhaps let that Christmas spirit last a little longer. Today I was given a beautiful pear tree, with a partridge on the top of it. The cat is having a fit over the bird, and I'm trying to figure out where in the yard to put the tree.

December 26

Dear Diary,

Today my wife gave me two turtle doves, they're getting along just fine with the partridge. I didn't really ever think I'd have any birds in my lifetime, but now I have three. They're pretty, and they sing well. The cat drools when he walks by

them. We're keeping them as far away from him as possible, I have to run to PetSmart to buy bird feed.

December 27

Dear Diary,

OK, things are taking an odd turn, more birds! Today it was three French hens— though I appreciate the number thing she has going for her, I don't know what to do with French hens. Why the French ones? What was wrong with American ones? Will they lay eggs? I mean, it would be nice to have eggs on demand. Still, all these fowl are starting to be a bit foul (I'm hilarious, dairy. Hilarious).

December 28

Dear Diary,

Four colly birds! What the hell is up with all the damn birds? Did someone tell my wife I wanted to open up an aviary? Because whoever did is DEAD to me! I am now the owner of ten birds. The checkout people at PetSmart all know me by name at this point. Today I'm going to pick up more feed, and move the birds into a shack I've built in the back. Wish me luck, diary.

December 29

Dear Diary,

Finally! NO MORE BIRDS! Instead today I was given Five Golden Rings. I have no idea what I'm going to do with five golden rings, I'm just glad it wasn't more birds.

December 30

Dear Diary,

I spoke too soon. Six Geese. Where did she find all of these things!? Was QVC having a fire sale on birds or something? I really wish she was a bit more practical in her gifting. It's not that I dislike having these birds around, they're lovely. The thing is, I'm just starting to feel a little like Tippi Hedren. I buy my wife jewelry, and she keeps on giving me the bird.

December 31

Dear Diary,

Happy New Year's Eve! We're going out to a friend's tonight for a party, I'm looking forward to it. As you could guess, today it was yet more birds. Seven Swans, who have all taken up residency in our pool. They just swim, peck, eat, swim, peck, eat. PetSmart now sells food to me by the gross. We've locked the cat down in the basement, he has that same gleam in his eyes that I do when I look at

the Waffle House menu.

January 1

Dear Diary,

Happy New Year! I'm looking forward to a fresh start for a prosperous new year. We had a great time last night at the party, I fully admit that I overdid it. So much so, that I thought I was hallucinating this morning when I looked out on the lawn and saw eight young ladies milking cows. It was very real, and today's gift. I'm starting to think this whole “12 days of Christmas” thing was a horrible idea.

January 2

Dear Diary,

My life is becoming a circus. This evergrowing menagerie now has nine ladies dancing. Birds chirp, maids milk, and now women are dancing all over the house. I'm starting to feel like a club owner. As if I found a barn somewhere full of animals and just said "Dance around it all." If I hear “Cotton Eye Joe” one more time I'm going to scream for 24 hours straight.

January 3

Dear Diary,

I think today's gift was more for my wife than it was for me—actually I think this whole gift thing is just her attempt to Gaslight me. Today it was nine lords a-leaping. Men dancing this time. You can't move anywhere on my property without running into a man or a woman, wearing a leotard, jumping around as if their life depended on it. I think I've fallen into my own personal Circ Du Soleil Hell.

January 4

Dear Diary, Eleven Pipers. That will not. Stop. Piping. You know how much I hate Renascence fairs? Well, guess what? I'm now living in the middle of one. They won't even stop at night! Who did I marry, what happened to that gal? She loved board games and Apple products, not slow torturing her spouse! I think what's far scarier, is that there was a place she could order all of this from. Do you just search for "Lords A-Leaping" on Amazon? Does that get Prime shipping?

January 5

Dear Diary,

Today is the final day, praise Jesus! I woke up this morning to what I thought was the sound of rifles being fired to finally put me out of my misery but instead was my last present. Twelve drummers. Just like the pipers of yesterday, they never stop drumming. They even followed me all the way down to the police station. Did I fail to mention that I was brought in for questioning this morning? It seems that having nine young ladies milking cows on your front lawn is a borderline violation of labor laws.

PETA has set up a protest outside my house as well, they are upset with the number of caged critters on my land. I was even on the news last night! To top it all off, this morning in my mail, I found a sternly worded letter from Oprah. Next year, I am not exchanging gifts with my wife. I'm just gonna get her a McDonald's gift card...it'll be all I can afford after the legal bills.

See you next week.
