NOTE

FROM THE

PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! Thank you all so much for all of the amazing snow pictures you sent to us on social media. We love using them! The snow can cause issues but it sure does make pretty pictures for everyone. How does sledding work in your family? My kids have a big hill in the neighborhood they like to use for sledding. When they get done they take off their snow bibs in the garage and run in to sit by the fireplace while I make hot chocolate. How are those new year resolutions going for everyone? Are you sticking to them or have you given up? I haven’t made it to the gym yet but I am shooting for next week. We will see how that goes. Please contact us for any of your advertising or social media needs. We appreciate every single one of you and the support you always give us. Please bundle up during this cold weather and do what you can to keep your family healthy.

Enter the most unlikely setting for a circus, a factory. One where the workers are acrobats and the machines are circus props. Welcome to Birdhouse Factory! The Pro-Art Association presents Las Vegas based circus troupe Cirque Mechanics for a one-of-a-kind performance on Sunday, February 6th at 2:00 PM at the Wise County Performing Arts Center at J.W. Adams Combined School in Pound, VA. Behold a contortionist perform on a turntable powered by unicyclists. Witness the trapeze artist flying high thanks to the spins of an acrobat inside a giant gear-like wheel. Marvel as the trampoline wall artists defy the laws of physics by virtually flying and walking on air. Giggle at the antics of the characters, dazzle at the acrodancing, and enchanted by the story of laughter, love, flight, and birdhouses. Cirque Mechanics, inspired by modern circus, finds its roots in the mechanical and its heart in stories of American ingenuity, wrapped in circus acrobatics, mechanical wonders, and a bit of clowning around. Birdhouse Factory toured the United States and Europe for ten years inspiring and entertaining

audiences and critics. The New York Times found this circus show “exceptional, evocative, ... and engrossingly entertaining.” Birdhouse Factory was inspired, in part, by the masterful industry murals of Mexican-born artist Diego Rivera, the outrageous illustrations of cartoonist Rube Goldberg and the slap-stick humor of Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times. While these inspirations make Birdhouse Factory artful, nostalgic and funny, the true essence of the show comes from the circus. This is a simple story of daily life in a “widgets” factory circa 1935, where workers are brought together by the most unlikely of events, a bird accidentally injured by the main steam boiler. The accident and caring for the bird brings the workers closer and inspires them to break away from the efficiency and monotony of the assembly-line mentality and display their true inner talents and abilities. In the process, they use their bodies and machines to build birdhouses in a less efficient albeit joyful and soulful way. Birdhouse Factory delivers a timeless message of hope, camaraderie and the power of the collaborative human spirit

when presented with adversity. Although conceptualized prior to the pandemic, and inspired by the Great Depression, Birdhouse Factory addresses the challenges faced by industry and workers during unprecedented times. The story is one of imaginative recovery, where humans create magic when working together towards common goals. General admission tickets are $15 at the door, and all children and students are free to attend. Pro-Art season tickets will be honored for this performance. Season tickets can be purchased at proartva.org, in person at any show, or by calling 276-376-4520. To help reduce the spread of Covid-19, patrons are required to wear a mask for the duration of the performance. Pro-Art partners with a variety of venues, therefore individuals with mobility issues are encouraged to call or email the Pro-Art office to make arrangements for parking. For evolving conditions related to the global pandemic, inclement

weather, or similar unforeseen circumstances, patrons are encouraged to visit proartva.org or call 276-376-4520 for up-to-date information. Pro-Art’s mission is to promote the arts and expand accessibility to cultural experiences for residents and students in Wise, Lee, and Dickenson Counties and the City of Norton. For more information about planned performances, please visit proartva.org. You can find the Pro-Art Association on social media @ProArtVA. Pro-Art is supported in part by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as the Slemp Foundation, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, and Mountain Empire Community College. If you have any questions, please visit proartva.org, call the office at (276) 376-4520, or send an email to pro-art@uvawise.edu

Abracadabra

I remember reading books about Houdini and others and trying out little tricks as my younger brother watched. But alas my dreams of standing on a stage as the lights flashed around me with the young female assistance moving around the stage detracting the audience while I performed my illusions was not meant to be. After all, I grew up in cash hollow, a spot on the map that looks like a bug stained, so I did the next best thing. I began writing and I created my own prestidigitator (my favorite word by the way) in one of my novels. Although I could try and talk Lorie into letting me try the cutting in half trick on her, I mean what could happen? Oh she just said no, so never mind. In today’s world everything is revealed via the internet but I believe you

should still look up some of the great prestidigitators and be taken away for a moment by the skill and technique of some true show people. Snow, Bah, Humbug or is It? by Lorie Ann McReynolds I am my mother’s daughter. Which means, she disliked the snow and I now dislike the snow. I didn’t always have this distaste for the white, fluffy stuff. As a little girl, I loved it. Snow was my friend when it would cancel school for the day or sometimes for the whole week. But as a grown woman, I think about the calamities that it can cause. Car accidents, trees falling, downed power lines, and being stranded on the interstate. Those are all fears of mine. Especially now being on my own. However, when I see the snow now, it

does recall some good memories. Again, as a young girl, I loved snow days. My sister and her family lived beside me and my parents. My sister and my niece would walk up to our house, and we would play a little bit outside in the cold wonderful; winter wonderland of the rolling white mounds of ice. And then when we would get too cold, we would come inside and be greeted with the smell of macaroni and tomatoes. My mom made the best macaroni and tomatoes. Something I have yet to achieve, I can never make mine taste like hers. We would fill our bowls to the top. Then add a little butter and pepper to it. It was like a feast. After we ate, we would play games all day. UNO, Trouble, and Rummy to name a few.

were made because of it. I also need to remember that sometimes God calms the storm. But other times, He lets the storm rage and calms His child. So maybe it is a humbug now, but as a child and for children everywhere I am sure it is still a magical wonderful place when the world turns white overnight and early in the morning when school is called off the mittens and coats are hurriedly put on. Then the reminders begin, “don’t track that snow into the house.” Please enjoy one free audio review copy of Geronimo his tale by him, now available on Audible. Those snow days are some of my best memories. So, when the beautiful, white, sparkling snow starts to fall, I need to remember that wonderful memories 2RLZ6PHFTAADP

.If I could have chosen any profession growing up I would have been a stage magician. I always found that form of entertainment exotic and fascinating. My generation magician grew up watching David Copperfield, incidentally I had just finished his book on the history of magic and I was enthralled from beginning to end. However, my favorite magician was Leon mandrake. Not only was he the inspiration for Lee Faulk’s wonderful Mandrake the Magician he just looked really cool, the top hat, the tuxedo, the pencil mustache and the cane. In fact I went trick or treating one year as mandrake, and yes I was a child when I went.

You just spotted a controversial status update from a major brand and noticed it has gone viral. You imagine getting a ton of traction from other users of that platform if you respond, but is your input on the update worth the response?

the public unless your business is directly impacted by it. Free speech applies, but that does not mean the consequences of that speech are free of repercussions. Your brand could be irreparably damaged by one comment.

The answer will almost always be no…unless the controversy directly impacts your brand or industry. Inserting yourself into a conversation that does not directly impact you could have negative results for your company.

Silence is golden in controversial situations and can mean the difference between repeat business and a negative reputation. Think about the consequences on your brand before you make a decision to speak on an issue that does not directly impact you or your business.

I work for an independent restaurant group, which means we are not part of a chain. Our owner has the high end steakhouse I work for, plus two more less costly ventures, but that’s it. Considering the entire restaurant only holds a little over 100 people max, our staff is very small – 12 people total between servers and bartenders. Working with the same group of people over 30 hours a week really creates a family dynamic; we share laughs, commiserate over crappy guests and sometimes if it’s busy or someone is having a bad day, we might get snippy like a real family. Most of the time no one gives it a second thought, but occasionally someone gets their feelings hurt.

addressing an issue head on, directly engaging others about a dispute. To be a healthy, mature adult means mastering the art of confrontation in a respectful way. Being able to effectively use your words to convey a message and resolve differences is an essential skill; if you can’t communicate through differences without getting upset or just ignore issues like they don’t exist you can’t fix them. And it’s not just having the ability to confront others; you have to be able to confront your own demons in the same manner to conquer them and grow. I know a lot of people who struggle with issues from addiction to weight problems to finances simply because they refuse to acknowledge their own crap so they can fix it. It’s Last week a co-worker who I considered true what they say in AA – the first step is admitting you have a problem, one of my closer friends, as we have aka confrontation. communication and hang out outside of work hours, snapped at me because If you’re someone who gets I unintentionally jumped in front of him uncomfortable at the thought of directly while he was waiting for a computer. Once they’ve aired their grievance, then take your time to respectfully counter with your own response. When"The Matrix" was released in 1999 (!) the movie could best be described as trippy cool. The film featured a special effect movie fans had never seen before and star Keanu Reeves in awesome sunglasses and a long black coat. The film proved to be such a success two sequels followed in 2003. Why it has taken Warner Brothers so long to bring a fourth film to the series is anyone's guess, but we now have "The Matrix Resurrections" for fans of the film series to enjoy. For those who have no clue about this series of films, it follows the story of the technological fall of humanity. As in a lot of stories in science fiction, artificial intelligence created by mankind has become self-aware and led to a race of machines that imprisoned mankind in a virtual reality system, called the Matrix, to be farmed as a power source. On occasion some of the human prisoners break free from the system, and because they are considered a threat, are pursued by artificial intelligence inside and outside of the Matrix. Keanu portrays Neo, who along with other humans, including Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss), have been trying to free humanity from the system in all the films while being chased by the guardians of the Matrix. The latest film

occurs sixty years after the events of "The Matrix Revolutions" and follows Neo who has been living an ordinary life under his original identity of Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco where he is a video game developer basing games on his faint memory of being Neo. However his life is about to change when a new version of Morpheus (a character who tries to help save humanity played in this film by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) offers him the infamous red pill which will reopen his mind to the world of the Matrix, which has become an even more dangerous place since the previous films. Once he is open to the Matrix, Neo joins a group of rebels to fight a new enemy. His actions set the stage for another amazing adventure within the Matrix and some trippy (that word again) segments during the course of the story. Neo is reunited with his friend Trinity, who when he initially meets her, is a married mother named Tiffany. The two eventually are fighting the evil machines and team with a group of rebels which include a character named Bugs (Jessica Jenwick), a glue-haired gunslinger with a White Rabbit ala "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" tatoo. As in the other films, this new effort goes in and out of reality so many times it makes your head spin, and you never know from moment to moment what is the real world or the Matrix world, but that's the fun of these movies. This is really the type of film you really need to pay close attention to, less you become even further confused than you might already be. While I have never been a huge fan of these films, I have enjoyed watching them, and I even dressed as Neo one Halloween. As most people who know me are well aware I am not a huge fan of the acting "talents" of Reeves, but he is perfect in this role as he is in his "John Wick" series. To me Reeves

is an actor who needs to carefully choose his roles (check his "acting" in "Bram Stoker's Dracula" where he nearly derails the film). Reeves aside, the latest film in the Matrix series takes full advantage of the update in special effects since 2003 and is full of eye candy. The film features several actors of note including Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff, both of which appear to be having a blast in their respective roles as villains. As I mentioned earlier the story

being set 60 years after the last film is well explained. "The Matrix Resurrections" is yet another tale of artificial intelligence attempting to take over or eradicate mankind. In closing I encourage you to always be polite to Alexa. Now playing in theaters and for a limited time on HBO Max. (Rated R)
