Just off I-81, only ten minutes north of Bristol, Tennessee, and two hours northeast of Asheville, North Carolina, is Abingdon, Virginia. Easily accessible from many metro areas, this has been described as one of the coolest small towns in the country. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia, it combines historic charm and proximity to spectacular outdoor recreation. Abingdon’s history includes stories of battles, from Revolutionary times to Civil War times and more. Its outdoor adventure includes some of the most scenic and exciting driving trails for motorcyclists. This year, that combination will provide the perfect setting for two amazing art exhibits. Art lovers, motorcycle enthusiasts, and students of history will all be amazed when the William King Museum of Art (415 Academy Drive, Abingdon, Virginia 24212; 276-628-5005) hosts The Long Rifle in Virginia and The Open Road: The Art of the Motorcycle, which will
both be on display from June through September this year. With its six galleries and frequently changing exhibits, the museum is considered the premier visual arts center in the region. It is known for its quality exhibitions ranging from contemporary regional art to fine art from all around the world. It is also home to the Betsy K. White Cultural Heritage Research Archive, which documents the rich decorative arts legacy of the region, work that is reflected in two cultural heritage galleries, which celebrate that legacy. This year, two amazing and unusual traveling exhibits will be highlights of the William King schedule, providing an excellent opportunity for both first-hand experiences and an amazing retrospective for those who love to explore history or hit the open road. The Long Rifle in Virginia, April 1, 2022-October 31, 2022 The long rifle was an essential piece of equipment on Virginia’s
frontier during the 18th century settlement period. Its longer barrel and rifling technology made it highly accurate at long range and particularly suited to the woodland landscape of western Virginia. Its manufacture was possible with hand-operated tools by local gunsmiths, who made it with native woods and often applied decorative embellishments. This exhibition will feature approximately 40 guns by known makers, selected for their decorative value. The Open Road: The Art of the Motorcycle, June 16, 2022-September 18, 2022 This exhibition is a retrospective of the art, design, and history of the motorcycle. A visual timeline will feature the history and design of the motorcycle, from the controversy of the original make and model to present-day designs from United States brands. It will investigate the use of motorcycles in World War I and World War II and explore how
the motorcycle culture has evolved to the biker culture that we know today. Featuring motorcycles that are artfully crafted in their designs, viewers can expect to see a multitude of motorcycles including street bikes, off-road bikes, dual-purpose bikes, and vintage bikes. In Abingdon, the lodging is as eclectic as the history. The Martha Washington Inn and Spa (150 West Main Street, Abingdon, Virginia 24210; 276-628-3161), along with a variety of other lodging options, give visitors a complete array of accommodations to fit any need. For more Abingdon adventure, a visit to VisitAbingdonVirginia.com offers online itineraries, a full list of restaurants, and more. There is also a summary online of current and upcoming exhibits at the William King Museum of Art.

The play demonstrates the importance of working together to affect change and specifically how non-violent protest was used to combat the cruelties of segregation. Set in 1961, fifteen years after the Supreme Court outlawed segregation, bus lines and cities throughout the south continued to enforce a rigid system separating black and white citizens. The freedom riders, both black and white Americans, decided to travel together on buses that crossed state lines, purposefully disregarding the hateful segregation practices that were commonplace. The unforgettable heroes and the facts behind the important events portrayed in Freedom Riders are essential to a full understanding of the civil rights era and American history. Mad River Theater Works is an acclaimed touring ensemble that creates vibrant and evocative plays with music for families and young audiences, based on American history and folklore. Founded in 1978, Mad River presents original productions that explore traditional stories in a unique and innovative style.

ETSU Theatre and Dance to Present ‘Straight White Men
theloaferonline.com February 15, 2022
14
The recent Broadway hit “Straight White Men” will make its regional premiere Feb. 17-20 at East Tennessee State University’s Martin Center for the Arts. Presented by the ETSU Department of Theatre and Dance, the show will be performed Feb. 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. in the Bert C Bach Theatre. “Straight White Men” is written by Young Jean Lee, who was the first Asian American woman to have a play produced on Broadway. The show opened Off-Broadway in November 2014 and was later produced by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago before opening at Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre in June 2018. The show tells the story of three brothers who have gathered at their widowed father Ed’s Midwestern home for Christmas Eve. Jake is a recently divorced banker, Drew is a writer and professor, and Matt, a Harvard graduate, has just moved back home with his dad. While the holiday begins with cheerful trash-talking, pranks, takeout Chinese food, and other
Christmas rituals, the mood shifts when one of the siblings shows his emotional vulnerabilities, leaving the rest of the family debating what his true problem really is and what should be done to help him. Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis by Lorie Ann McReynolds When I was a little girl, I remember my parents talking about arthritis. My mom’s feet and back would hurt because of it. For my daddy, it was his hands that were stricken with the pain. I never knew the extent of their discomfort. I
never knew the depth of the hurt. Until now. In 2002, at age 31, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). RA is where my immune system, whose job is to protect my body, actually produces something that attacks my joints. It causes swelling, indescribable pain and joint damage. I am sure I had it many years before I was diagnosed but didn’t realize what it was. When the RA would hit my upper body joints, it would make things like getting dressed difficult as the area where the afflicted joint was would become useless, difficult to move and lose its strength. The lower body joints would make walking difficult as putting weight on that leg would be nearly impossible. I have been prescribed many medicines over the last 20 years. Some worked very well, and I would be in remission. Others I think my body would get used to and over time would become not as effective. With my current treatment plan which is 2 pills a day and a biologics injection once a week, I have been in remission for years only with an occasional “flare up” as they are called. But in the last couple of months, the flare ups have been more frequent. I am sure when I see my Rheumatologist soon, he will change my treatment plan.
As much as RA affects the joints, it also affects the mind. It is very hard not to be able to do what I used to do. I must take things slower now. Be more cautious of how I am walking, what I am lifting. When a flare up affects how I walk, it draws attention to myself, which is something I detest. Also, I have to accept help from others. On the other hand, I am very blessed that God surrounded me with people who love me and are willing to help me. I am thankful for them even if it is still hard to accept the help. So, if you know of someone who has RA, be patient with them. They don’t mean to be difficult. They don’t mean to cancel plans right before an event. It is hard for them to commit because they don’t know when a flare up will happen. They don’t mean to be downhearted. They are struggling with the memories of the active person they were and trying to find a balance with the person they are now. So, tell them it is okay. While you don’t fully understand what they are going through, you are there for them in whatever way they need you.

Tri-Cities Faces and Places Celebrating the people and places of our community! ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
As I’ve stated many times throughout my tenure here in the Loafer, self-love is the best love. Regardless of your relationship status, being kind to yourself should be of the utmost importance. And as the queen of self-care, the week of Valentine’s seems like a great time for a little solo pampering. Whether you’re happily coupled or fiercely single, it’s high time to treat yo’ self to the good life. Allow me to give you a guide to goodness at any budget. Even if you’re balling on a budget, you can still enjoy an evening of indulgence without breaking the bank. For less than $50, you can give yourself a spa experience in the privacy of your own home. The first step in self-care is isolation and it also doesn’t cost a cent. If you live alone like me it’s as simple as kicking the dogs out of whatever room you’re occupyingor shipping them off for a weekend at grandmas. If you’re not the sole human tenant of the household however, it can require a bit more planning. So look ahead and choose a convenient time to ask your significant other to enjoy an evening with friends, or to take the kids out for dinner and a movie. Set up a sitter, put the pets in their crates-whatever you have to do to make sure you get at least a couple hours of uninterrupted quiet time. Next, turn your phone on airplane mode; no calls or notifications going in and out. Kick on some relaxing music. All streaming
platforms have “chill” or “spa” music channels that will serve to soothe and unwind, but feel free to crank up whatever music makes your heart feel full. Start running a hot bath or shower with all the doors shut so the room gets steamy and warm. Then add a fizzy bath bomb or essential oils, light some candles and dim the lights to a relaxing ambiance. Just before you’re ready to crawl in, pour yourself a drink. If you imbibe in something with a little octane, a $15 bottle of prosecco or Willamette Pinot Noir makes a great companion, but feel free to craft a cocktail or crack open a cold beer if that’s what tickles your fancy. If you don’t drink, a hot cup of organic tea is just perfect as well. Now sit down and relax. TJ Maxx sells great face masks for around $5, or just enjoy reading a book or some magazines that have been collecting dust on your shelves. Once your water starts to get cold or your feet start to prune, wrap up in a warm towel or robe straight from the dryer, slather yourself in your favorite scented lotion and prepare your favorite meal. Whether it’s takeout from your favorite Chinese hole-inthe-wall, a pot of macaroni, or a gourmet meal from scratch, the point is to treat yourself to something so yummy it feels sinful, complete with dessert. Finish off with something sweet; a $3 box of brownies and a carton of ice cream can go a long way! Enjoy your meal while watching your favorite show or movie and savor your last moments of freedom. If you’ve got a bit more money to
spend, upgrade this experience by booking a stay at a hotel or Air BnB and reservations at your favorite restaurant. Many people are intimidated at the idea of dining alone, but I’m here to tell you it’s one of my favorite things. For me there is no greater experience than being able to chow down with reckless abandon, without the pressure of worrying about food in my teeth or if I’m using my chopsticks correctly. If you’re not comfortable taking up an entire table, cozy up at the bar. You’re guaranteed to have an opportunity for conversation there. But there’s always the option of room service as well. There is nothing more selfindulgent than a silver tray full of food delivered directly to an oversized fluffy bed. You can also book yourself a massage, facial or mani/pedi at a local spa, which will offer a wide variety of services at every price range. A stay at the Carnegie in Johnson City presents a one stop shop for food, drink, relaxation and accommodations without ever stepping foot out of the building. Finally, if you’re lucky enough that money is no object (due to being financially sound or having saved enough in your rainy day fund) there is no better time than the present to sweep yourself away for a solo adventure. Book the longest vacation you can afford to a place that brings you joy and hit the road alone! There should be no guilt tied to taking time away for yourself once and awhile. Go to an all-inclusive tropical resort, spend a long weekend skiing the
by Kathie Scalf slopes before the season is over, or backpack your way around Europe for a couple of weeks. Wherever you end up, a solo vacation should be centered around feeding your mental well-being and personal growth. Nurturing yourself should have no financial bearing. Regardless of your tax bracket, sexual orientation, relationship status or age, we ALL deserve love. And the best love comes from you, to you. Valentine’s Day is so focused on telling other people how much you love them; in the days following, how about concerting the same amount of effort toward showering yourself with the same attention and affection? Nothing feels better than making yourself Queen or King for the day, so treat yourself with the same care you want to give to other people. You won’t be disappointed.
XO - Kathie

I must confess I never read any of the Harry Potter novels and I still haven't. Nevertheless when the first film in the series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was released in 2001 I was in line. After viewing the first film I became an immediate fan and enjoyed all the films in the series which ended in 2011. I always enjoyed the fact that having never read the novels I never knew what was going to happen in the next film, so I had a completely different perspective than my friends who had read all the novels. While they were wondering how the film versions would meet or come up short of their expectations, I was simply excited to see what would happen next. The "Harry Potter" film series was one of the most successful of all time, and fans literally grew up with or watched the characters grow up with each new film. Flash forward to 2022 and we have the excitement of

"Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Return of Hogwarts" now showing on HBO Max. The reunion celebrates the 20th anniversary of the release of the first film in the series, and reunites members of the cast. The special features the warm reunion of Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), and other cast members. The premise of the special features the cast returning to Hogwarts School, where they reminisce about their time together filming for ten years. The special also features the various directors of the films, and their unique approach to each film. I really enjoyed all the archival footage of three main stars auditioning together and you can see an immediate chemistry between them. Of special note is how Watson felt she "was" Hermione, and how when she read the books, first released in 1997, she felt the role was meant to be hers. In the special we also see the other beloved stars of the series including Helena Bonham Carter, who has a hilarious moment with Radcliffe, Robbie Coltrane, who is often very emotional about his time in the films, Gary Olman, of whom Radcliffe was in awe of, and Ralph Fiennes, who was so wonderful as one of the best movie villains of all time. The special also reveals the surprising great admiration and love between Watson and Tom Felton, who played bad seed Draco Malfoy in the series. I
also enjoyed seeing twin actors James and Oliver Phelps who were so much fun as Fred and George Weasley, and how they loved the fact that twins were featured in the novels. There is so much to talk about regarding the reunion, but I will say the best parts for me are when the three main stars are chatting about their time together, and how they will always be connected to each other and have a lasting bond. Two moments were especially heart tugging, with Watson and Grint talking, one on one, while revealing their love for each other, but making it clear their love is not romantic. The three main stars shed a lot of tears during the reunion special, and the special ends
with Radcliff shedding tears while revealing how much those who worked with him on the film series mean to him. It really is amazing to realize if you watched the films as they were released how we saw the actors grow up before our very eyes. I doubt we will ever see this again in the world of cinema. This reunion is a must see for fans of the films, and will leave you wanting to take in another viewing of the series, as it did for me. "Return to Hogwarts" is now playing on HBO Max and will show later in 2022 on TBS and the Cartoon Network. (Rated TV PG)

Anyone else a bit surprised it’s February already? Didn’t we just have New Years? Anyways, once again those cinematic bloodhounds, Warner Archive, have a release a new slate of titles, two of which I take a look at this week. Both titles are making their blu-ray debuts in brand new restorations. First up we have Warner Brothers’ grand pre-code musical “Gold Diggers of 1933,” then we head up a decade and a half to MGM for their all-star, technicolor production of “The Three Musketeers.”
The film is full of WB contract players, Warren William, Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, Ruby Keller, Guy Kibbee, and Ned Sparks. The film is of the pre-code era, so there’s a few sequences that are most suggestive and downright risqué. Pre-Code films are those films made during that window of time with the production code, which was to keep movies “pure,” was created, but not inforced. As such, this film is a absolute hoot from start to finish, a funny, engaging, and wilding amusing entertainment.

Kelly brings an amazingly athletic performance to the film, and the sword fights are really wonderful. Unfortunately, most of the film just sorta lies there and it feels like it goes on a little too long. This included four featurettes and three vintage cartoons, plus a trailer. Outside of the trailer and the cartoons, all the extras are in SD since they were made for the DVD era. A highly recommended disc for you collection.
