FROM THE
PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! Happy St Patrick’s Day! I hope you are going to wear your green so you don’t get pinched. Do you have plans to wear green and celebrate? How about that March snow?! I read about an old wife’s tale that if you save some of the melted snow from the first snow in March that it can be used to relieves burns and skin issues. Have you tried that? I have some of the melted snow and I am anxious to see if it works. I burn myself all the time in the kitchen. April will be here before we know it and I hope Spring is here to stay and we get no more snow! I love Spring and Summer. Our Family has been crazy busy moving into our house that we have been building for the last 2 years. So much work! Building a house is worth it in the end but it is a lot of work and stress. I hope everyone has a great week! Thank you for your support and please keep picking up The Loafer.
Love, Lisa Durbin Publisher
IONA’s music is a unique, acoustic weave of the traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany (France), the Isle of Man, Asturies and Galicia (Spain), as well as their transplants in America. Blending songs, dance tunes, and aires into a rich and stunning tapestry, their style is outstanding in an arena where these traditions are seldom intertwined. The Pro-Art Association welcomes IONA on Saint Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17th at 7:00 PM at Lee Theatre in Pennington Gap, and to kick off the weekend, Friday, March 18th at 7:00 PM at the Jettie Baker Center in Clintwood. Conceived in 1986, IONA was the musical offspring of lead singer, bouzouki, guitar and bodhrán player Barbara Ryan and wind section, Bernard Argent. With fiddler Jim Queen (banjo and vocals as well), percussive dancer and singer Marsha Searle, and Leigh Oben on guitar, bass guitar and double bass, IONA has become the leading Celtic group in
the Mid-Atlantic region.

Patrons of the East Tennessee State University Martin Center for the Arts will enjoy what the performing band has called the “closest to ABBA you’ll ever get.” ABBA – The Concert plays Saturday, June 11, at 8 p.m. and will feature many classics, including “Waterloo,” “Mamma Mia,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “The Name of the Game,” “S.O.S” and “Voulez-Vous.” Tickets for ABBA – The Concert: A Tribute to ABBA go on sale Friday, March 11, at 10 a.m. at ETSUMartinCenter.org. “They are by far the best tribute band performing the hits of one of the best pop bands ever,” said Unratedmag.com. “Keep up the great work and thank you for the music.” For well over a decade, 21st Century Artists Inc. has been presenting its ABBA tribute show throughout North America, known as ABBA – The Music, ABBA – The Concert and ABBA – The Hits. The U.S. tours have sold out at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Highland Park in Chicago and Wolf Trap in Virginia, in addition to the group’s tours around the globe. “We can’t wait to see folks dancing in
the ETSU Martin Center aisles, to ABBA’s timeless tunes,” said Jennifer Clements, executive director of the Martin Center and University Events. “The level of joy these songs bring just can’t be quantified. This dazzling ensemble plays year-after-year at many venues because ABBA’s music and positive energy never grow old.” ABBA – The Concert features, as expected, all the sparkle and iconic costumes, as well as the sound of the original ABBA. “The acclaimed cover band ... looks and sounds just like the original foursome,” Unrated Magazine said. “The packed venue (in Ravinia, Illinois) enjoyed a night of ABBA’s greatest hits performed flawlessly.” Other ABBA standards will include “Fernando,” the tear-jerker “The Winner Takes It All,” “Does Your Mother Know” and other fan favorites from the Swedish group’s songbook. Abba – The Concert is not affiliated with the original ABBA or “Mamma Mia.” For more information on ABBA – The Concert, visit abbatheconcert.com. For more about the Martin Center or to purchase tickets, visit

Ly la h This sweet nine year old senior cat is Lylah. Lylah has been at The Bridge Home for 5 YEARS. She has been overlooked by potential adopters for a very long time. We would love to find her a home. Lylah is laid back, affectionate, and loves attention. She gets along with other cats and is healthy. Lylah is now at the Bristol
VA PetSmart, where we hope she will get more visibility. If someone would take this girl home, it would help two cats, as we would be able to bring in another from our lengthy waiting list. Lylah has been spayed and is current on her vaccinations.

Hello my fellow riders, hope you are enjoying the warmer weather. Please be safe and keep your knees in the breeze. I thought maybe this week it would be nice to give a brief history lesson on Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Childhood friends William Harley and Arthur Davidson are the ones to credit for the creation of Harley Davidson. The two friends had an early fascination with bicycles and in their spare time worked on prototypes for motorcycles. Then in 1903 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the creation of their first motorcycle came to life. They worked together on the prototype in a 10-by-15-foot shed. They immediately began working on a newer and more modern bike. A new prototype featuring a bigger engine was completed in 1904. This model participated in motorcycle racing at State Fair Park in Milwaukee. The first production bike, the Harley-Davidson Model No.1 was released in 1905 and was very similar to the first two bikes produced. The company was producing complete bikes on a limited basis. The first Harley-Davidson dealer was Carl H. Lang of Chicago, who sold three of the five bikes that had been built in the backyard shed. The first Harley-Davidson factory was built in 1906 on Chestnut Street in Milwaukee, where the company produced 50 bikes that year. The company was officially incorporated in 1907. By this time, Arthur’s two brothers, Walter and William Davidson, had joined the initiative. In 1917, about 50% of Harley’s sales went to the U.S. armed forces for use in World War I.
The first Harley-Davidson motorcycles for public sale were built in 1903. What is believed to be the first production Harley resides in the lobby of the Juneau Ave. offices. This price was $200.00. What a far cry from the cost of a new Harley today. The most popular models are the Sportster, Dyna Glide, and Soft Tail. Fun Fact as to why a Harleys are nicknamed Hogs: There's a reason Harleys are called "hogs." The name "hog" is synonymous with Harley-Davidson bikes, and though you might expect it to have something to do with their imposing, hulking size (or sound) in reality, the nickname was adopted because Harley racing team member Ray Weishaar owned a piglet, which became the team's mascot.

Top o’ the mornin’ to ye’ lads and lasses! It’s the week of St. Patrick’s, one of my favorite spring holidays. If you’re anything like me, you’re ready for a little more green in your life, mostly in the form of money and blossoming plant life after a long, cold winter. So this week, I’m filling you in on all things Patty adjacent. For starters, did you know this holiday wasn’t always just an excuse to pinch people and drink Jameson and Guiness until your eyes cross? The holiday actually began as a feast to honor the real Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Although he was born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave, and while he managed to escape, he eventually returned to convert the country to Christianity. By the time he died, he managed to establish numerous monasteries, churches and schools and many legends arose about the man, including that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland. Eventually March 17th was designated as the official day of religious services and feasts in St. Patrick’s honor. That’s right, the drunkest holiday in the world originally started as a religious celebration. You can think the backbone of this country, aka immigrant workers, for making the event what it is in the US
today. Cities with large Irish populations, particularly in the northeast, began staging elaborate celebrations in the mid-1700s. Since it falls during Lent, folks began using it as an excuse to take a break from all the restraints and abstinence leading up to Easter, hence the debauchery that now ensues. The biggest celebrations across the country occur in Boston, New York City, Chicago and Savannah, GA. The rivers are dyed green and there are parades followed by drinking and eating Irish fare. I’ve personally attended Savannah’s St. Patrick’s bash, and it is basically like Mardi Gras, except everyone is wearing green. If you’re brave enough and your liver can handle it, I highly recommend checking it out for yourself…RESPONSIBLY! So what are some fun ways to celebrate the holiday here? Why with food and drink in your own home of course! Whether you’re enjoying a tame night in or hosting a party for many, yummy cuisine and beverages with Irish roots are always a welcome addition. The most well-known dish is probably corned beef and cabbage, but apparently it’s actually not that popular in Ireland. Regardless, it’s delicious and I have the perfect recipe. This one is simple, takes only 10 minutes to prep and is done in the slow cooker, meaning you can enjoy the festivities without slaving over a hot stove! Corned Beef and Cabbage
Chop 1 large onion into chunks and scatter in the bottom of slow cooker. Place a 3-4lb corned beef brisket on top, seasoned with salt and pepper, and dust with accompanying seasoning packet, then fill slow cooker with 6oz of beer (Guiness is preferred but any will do.) Fill the rest of the way with 2-3 cups of water until beef is almost covered. Add 3-4 garlic cloves and 2 bay leaves. Begin cooking on low, and at the 3 hour mark, add 2lbs of peeled and quartered potatoes and 2 large chopped carrots. About 2 hours prior to serving, add 1 small head of cabbage, cut into wedges. Remove beef once it’s tender, usually between 8-10 hours total, and let it rest about 15 minutes before cutting. Serve with remaining cooked ingredients in the crockpot. Of course I recommend imbibing in an Irish stout with this meal, Guiness being the obvious choice. However, if you’ve never had Murphy’s, I highly suggest it! Irish stouts, while seemingly heavy and calorie-laden, are actually quite light. You get a great deal of bang for your buck with these black beauties, most of which have a lower ABV than tasteless light beers, and only 100-120 calories per 8oz pour! If you’re in the mood for dessert in liquid form, there’s nothing more festive for the holiday than an Irish Breakfast shot. The ingredients seemingly do not go together on any planet, but when mixed together, they taste
by Kathie Scalf
exactly like a yummy pancake breakfast! In a standard shot glass, fill halfway with Irish whiskey (Jameson or similar), then fill the rest of the way with butterscotch schnapps. Using the smallest sip of orange juice as a chaser, take the shot then follow with the oj; you’ll swear you just had breakfast at IHOP. Garnish with a strip of bacon to really add to the effect! However you choose to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day, make sure you do it responsibly. Don’t drink and drive, don’t be stupid. And don’t drink too much green dye in your beer because it will tear your stomach apart. You can thank me later as I’ve witnessed this firsthand as a bartender. Happy St. Paddy’s, and let’s all hope for the luck of the Irish for spring 2022!
XO - Kathie

Year after year I attempt to see most of the movies nominated for Oscars Best Picture, but I never see all of them. My track record for the films nominated this year is a bit better. One of the films nominated is "The Power of the Dog". This film is described as a "western psychological drama", so if you expect this film to be the typical shoot-em-up western then you are in for a let down. To me this is a family drama that happens to be set on a ranch in 1920's Montana, with New Zealand standing in for that western state. The film is based on the Thomas Savage 1967 novel of the same name, and I'm surprised it has taken Hollywood this long to adapt the novel to film. The film stars the always dependable Benedict Cumberbatch as Phil Burbank, who runs a ranch with his brother George (Jesse Plemons of "Friday Night Lights" fame). When the brothers are on a cattle drive they stop at an Inn where Geroge meets and falls in love with widower Rose (Kristen Dunst), the owner of the Inn who lives there with her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). The two brothers are very different in temperament, with the highly educated Phil often berating his brother and others with his volatile temper. Meanwhile the less-educated and

quiet George shows kindness to others and is often at odds with his brother. To say Phil is a lessthan-savory character is putting it lightly. When George and Rose are married, he brings his new bride back to the ranch where she is met with a steely coldness by Phil, who feels she has taken advantage of the family's wealth. With her new wealth Rose is able to send Peter to college to study medicine and surgery. Phil, along with the other ranch hands, constantly belittle Peter, and their actions toward her son and herself have driven Rose to drink heavily. George does everything he can to help Rose, even bringing in a grand piano so she can play like she did at a movie theater. After the piano arrives, Phil taunts her with his expert banjo playing while she struggles to retain her piano playing skills. In fact, one evening when the governor arrives with his wife for a dinner party, Rose freezes at the piano and is unable to play, further fueling the tension between her and Phil. When Peter returns home from college for summer break, he is taunted, but eventually Phil warms up to him and takes him under his wing in order to teach him horseback riding. With Phil and Peter becoming closer, Rose worries that he will be a bad influence on her son. Her worries do not deter George, as he feels Phil can help Peter better become the man he needs to be in order to eventually help on the ranch. Despite Peter and Phil's budding friendship, Rose remains at odds with her brother-in-law for the entire film. The film has a shocking ending, but at least three of the characters are left happy as the story closes. The film contains breathtaking cinematography, and director Jane Campion ("The Portrait of a Lady") takes full advantage of the beauty of New Zealand, with breathtaking vistas at every turn. This film is up for
Best Cinematography and in my opinion will battle "Dune" for the Oscar. As for the actors, the tension in the film between the actors cuts like a knife, and three of the actors, Cumberbatch, McPhee and Dunst are nominated. Campion is up for Best Director, and she may just take Oscar home. The film brings home the fact that bullying never ends well and often leads
to psychological damage for all involved. "The Power of the Dog" is a haunting film that proves Westerns need not all be about gun fights at high noon. Now playing on Netflix and in some theaters. (Rated R)

You never know when you’re going to find your new favorite movie. I want to clarify that I’m not taking about favorite movie of all time, but a movie that becomes one that you click with almost immediately and realize you want to spend more time with. I can’t recall a more joyful experience I’ve had watching a movie as of late as I did back in January when I sat down with a new blu-ray of the almost lost 1983 film “Get Crazy.” When you think of a lost movie what comes to mind? A movie from the silent era which no known print exists of? Perhaps an early sound film where all we have left are small fragments of it, not the entire film? What if I told you there was a film from 1983 that was, at one point in time, lost? I’d like to share with you the curious saga of Director Allan Arkush’s “Get Crazy,” which after being lost and almost impossible to see for close to 40 years, has been restored and brought back to life. Arkush is best known for being the director of “Rock ’n’ Roll High School,” the lone motion picture to star the seminal punk rock band The Ramones. Arkush has been a devoted music lover his entire life and in many ways “Get Crazy” is something of a spiritual sequel to his beloved “Rock ’n’ Roll High School.” Inspired by when Arkush worked at the famed rock venue The Filmore East, “Get Crazy” is centered around the New Year’s Eve celebrations at

the Saturn Theater, owned and operated for many years by Max Wolfe. Tonight is going to be the biggest concert of Max’s long career, but it’s under threat by his own health and a scheming record producer who wants to bulldoze the theater and turn it into an office complex. Inspired by the films Frank Tashlin made with Jerry Lewis, Looney Tunes, and a healthy dose of Mad Magazine, “Get Crazy” is a joyful, absurd, manic comedy. Oddly enough, because the film is locked into taking place on New Year’s Eve 1982 it makes the film perhaps play better now than it did the one weekend it was in a theater.
DVD and blu-ray to much anticipation and excitement. They even found two music videos to promote the film that was made for MTV but never aired. Those are included on the disc as well as a commentary track from Arkush and a full-length documentary on the making of the film where nearly all the cast and crew have fond memories of making this movie.
music. The best one is Lou Reed playing a character who sends up both his image and that of Bob Dylan.
“Get Crazy” is an absolute blast from start to finish and I do not recall the last time I watched a movie with such a smile on my face the entire time. Though it’s very much a film of its time and tip-toes around being in the vein of the sex comedies that I could spend an entire column telling were popular in the early ‘80s, this is a film you about the film’s cast, but here are the fast bullet points. We have a young Daniel whose time has come. I’ve been telling Stern as the fresh stage director in charge almost everyone I know that they need to see this movie, and now I’m telling you. of the night’s show, Ed Begley, Jr. as the evil record producer who wants the Saturn, The film’s legend was indeed true. It’s a and Malcolm McDowell as an English rock gem that’s been lingering for far too long in You read that right, I said “The one a studio vault. It may just become my new star still on the top of his game. There weekend it was in a theatre.” If you’ve seen are also parts played by musicians that New Year’s Eve tradition. Mel Brooks’ brilliant “The Producers” then pay off better the more you know about See you next week. you know that it’s centered around two Broadway producers who realize that they can make more money with a flop than a hit. Allan Arkush lived the real-life version of this with “Get Crazy.” It was financed by a fly-by-night company that intended to tank the film on purpose to keep the money raised. The film played for one weekend at a theater in Los Angels, then disappeared. Though Arkush made the film in the four-channel Dolby Stereo process, a one-channel monophonic VHS release came and that was it. Arkush has tried for years to get the film out again, but due to that shady company that produced it the movie’s ownership has changed hands so many times that at one point when he went looking the original negative was missing. On a separate occasion, the negative turned up, but the soundtrack elements to the film were missing. The film has had a small, but very devoted cult audience who have insisted that it’s one of the great comedies of the 1980s. Right before the pandemic, Arkush got the news he had long been waiting for. A phone call from home video label Kino Lorber said they had found “Get Crazy” in the vaults of MGM, the negatives, the soundtrack, everything needed to restore and remaster the film for a modern-day release. Arkush was involved in every step of the way to bring “Get Crazy” back out into the world, using the mastering process to tweak the colors of the film to get the supersaturated “Looney Tunes” vibe he always intended the film to have. In December the film was released on
