NOTE
FROM THE
PUBLISHER Hello Loafer Readers! Its Bristol Baby! Race week is here and I hope everyone is as excited as we are. Nascar on dirt sounds like such fun and I can’t wait to attend. I know the main race is on Easter Sunday this year but Bristol Motor Speedway is having an Easter celebration starting at 4:00pm led by Chris Tomlin, Max Lucado and Gary LeVox. Look inside for a story from my interview with Gary! I hope everyone that attends has a wonderful and safe time! Is Spring really here? It is so hard to tell with the weather going back and forth. One day its 30 and the next its 80. Who can keep up?! Let’s hang in there for the warmer weather. Inside this issue you will find local folks running for local offices. We will not tell you who to vote for but I urge you to do your research and get out there and exercise your right to vote. Thank you so much for your support and keep picking up those Loafers! Have a great week!

Real Talk with Gary Levox By: Lisa Durbin I was lucky enough to have a conversation with Gary Levox and what a nice gentleman! This Ohio born Buckeye has spent most of his adult life bringing music to our radios. After more than two decades with one of the most awarded country groups, Rascal Flatts Gary is now a solo act pursuing a lifelong dream of preaching gospel through music. Inspired by his Mamaw, Gary has always had a desire to bring us Gospel music but was never able to find the time while being the lead singer of Rascal Flatts. He was raised with a solid foundation of faith and has kept that alive in his family with his wife and daughters. When I asked Gary about raising kids he said “I just don’t know how anyone can get by without the Lord as their foundation.” When he isn’t on tour he spends his days with his family farming, hunting and just being outdoors. This amazing talented singer reiterated to me more than once that nothing was more important to him than his Lord and his family.
Both of his daughters have taken an interest in music but one is currently being a caregiver where she feels led to be serving and the other is loving on her horses. Gary supports their love of the music industry but says they understand it is a long road. I asked Gary if he has thought much about what his music has brought to people and he told me many stories of fans letting him know all about that. Songs that have soothed people during sickness or grief, their favorite music used at their weddings and so many other heartfelt stories. It was nice to hear that someone as famous and talented as Gary
Levox realizes that music is therapy and so helpful to people during the good and bad times. Gary is looking forward to being in Bristol this weekend and he will be part of the Easter celebration before the Nascar race on Sunday. He said he was excited to be singing the National Anthem as well. Even if you don’t normally listen to Gospel music I would strongly urge you to listen to his album One on One. Now more than ever we could all use a little gospel while jamming to some amazing music that Gary has always brought to us with his distinctive voice. Gary Levox’s tour begins this month!
for “Never Forget,” and LeVox’s daughter Brittany joins the family business on “While I Wait.” Then, with the reflective “All I See,” country-rap firebrand BRELAND helps the superstar keep his eyes on the ultimate prize and LeVox and MercyMe mix California pop and sunny spirituality on “A Little Love.” LeVox also recently released “We Got Fight,” featured as the coveted end credit in Netflix’s new film The Ice Road, out June 25. Along with bandmates Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, LeVox founded Rascal Flatts in 2000, and they went on to enjoy one of the most successful careers in modern country
music. Infusing the genre’s traditional sound with massive pop hooks, rock showmanship and faithful positivity, they scored 17 No. 1 singles and sold over 23 million albums, while also selling more than 11 million concert tickets and earning 40+ awards-show trophies – making them the most awarded country group of the last decade. The group celebrated its farewell with TWENTY YEARS OF RASCAL FLATTS: THE GREATEST HITS in 2020 as well as a sentimental radio hit together with the reflective “How They Remember You.” LeVox will continue to pursue a career as a solo artist.
About Gary Levox: After 20 years as front man to one of the most influential groups in Country history, Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox is embarking on a solo chapter that combines two of his biggest passions – music and faith. With his debut Christian single “The Distance” (Big Machine Records/Capitol Christian Music Group), the Ohio native unveils the empowering first taste of that mission, delivering an epic expression of the power of belief that’s tailor made for the COVID-19 era. Grounded in the Flatts legacy, but clearly existing on a different sonic plane, the track features an exhilarating mix of LeVox’s stratospheric vocals and high energy instrumentation, encouraging fans to never give up – and it’s a message he knows by heart. “The Distance” is one of five songs on LeVox’s debut solo collection ONE ON ONE (Big Machine Records), which includes multiple compelling collaborations as LeVox leans on his “congregation” to explore his new purpose. GRAMMY-winning Jonathan McReynolds offers a testimony of gratitude

“As a retired Criminal Court Judge who served Washington, Carter, Johnson, and Unicoi Counties for 16 years, to say the least, I became quite familiar with a lot of lawyers, including the three candidates for General Sessions Judge, Part III. Without question all three are fine folks. However, in my opinion Johnathan stands out with the right mixture of transparency, character, and legal competence you want to see in a courtroom. Many of you have seen the difference a good Judge can make, and I believe Johnathan can make that difference. He will make you an excellent Judge.”

“I’ve worked alongside Johnathan in the Court system for many years. He is exactly the type of person that our community needs as a Sessions Court Judge. Johnathan will bring judicial leadership and the ability to bring others in the community together as we expand the recovery courts and move toward a residential recovery court in East Tennessee. He has the expertise and experience of knowing the problems children and families face and how they impact our region in a larger scale. Johnathan will be a true asset to the people in our region.”

An important and treasured part of childhood for many people was the “Schoolhouse Rock!” segments they watched during the Saturday morning cartoons. Featuring iconic songs such as “I’m Just a Bill,” “Interjections!,” “Conjunction Junction” and “The Preamble,” these energetic short segments have entertained and educated generations of children. Now, Theatre-at-Tusculum is bringing these and several other songs from this beloved series to the Behan Arena Theatre at Tusculum University for six shows in April. “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.,” directed by Beth Schnura, will feature a cast of 27 from ages 8-18, along with the talents of the Theatre-at-Tusculum staff and community volunteers. Schnura grew up watching these segments, so this production is a labor of love. “These songs are a part of many people’s lives, and it helped them get through school,” said Schnura, who also serves as director of Tusculum Arts Outreach. “It was education in a fun format. Children might not have even realized how much they were learning by watching these beautifully crafted segments. We are thrilled to help people relive that special time in their lives and introduce these songs to anyone who

might not have experienced them.” The musical is about a school teacher named Tom who is preparing to teach his first day of school. He is nervous and second-guessing why he entered the profession because he fears he will not be well received. “He decides he has a few minutes to sit back and watch television, and ‘School House Rock’ starts to play,” Schnura said. “He begins to watch it, and the characters come out of the television. They give him a pep talk, letting him know he has all of the knowledge to teach – in part because of what he learned as a child from ‘Schoolhouse Rock.’ They let him know he can use that information to teach his students.”
said Wayne Thomas, dean of the College of Civic and Liberal Arts and executive director of Arts Outreach. “We are proud to contribute to the region’s quality of life and encourage people to support these upcoming six shows and consider an additional donation so we can continue our tradition of arts excellence.” “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” performances are April 21, April 22, April 29 and April 30 at 7 p.m. and April 24 and May 1 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17 for anyone 12 and older, $15 for audience members 60 and older and $5 for children younger than 12. Those who want to attend can obtain tickets by calling Arts Outreach at 423-798-1620 or emailing Jennifer
Hollowell, director of Tusculum’s Center for the Arts, at jhollowell@tusculum.edu. Seating is general admission. Theatre-at-Tusculum is under the auspices of Arts Outreach and is supported in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission, Hearts for the Arts, a Walmart Inc. local community support grant as well as many generous donors and volunteers. Additional information about Theatre-atTusculum and Arts Outreach programs is available at http://arts.tusculum.edu. To learn more about the university, please visit www.tusculum.edu.
Schnura said anyone who has watched the segments will be ready for what transpires in “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” She said the performances will bring the cartoons to life in a fun way using a lot of bright colors. The cast will have some interaction with the audience, and those in the seats will have some opportunities to sing along at certain moments in the show. “This is an outstanding production and another example how Tusculum University provides high-caliber entertainment to the community at extremely affordable prices,”
Cast members of “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” rehearse in the Behan Arena Theatre.

Happy Easter everyone! If you celebrate the holiday then I’m certain your upcoming weekend is going to be full of family fun like mine. While I don’t necessarily share the same religious views as most that honor this event, I still love the celebration and fellowship with family and friends. The focus on outdoor activities and ham rolls really seals the deal and might make Easter one of my favorite holidays of the year. I’ve taken on the role of chef in my little family unit and considering I spend 99% of my time cooking for only myself, a large meal can seem a bit daunting. But thankfully over the years I’ve honed my craft and have curated what I consider one of the best hams you’ll ever taste. It’s both sweet and savory, feeds a crowd, and requires very little hands-on prep. Lucky for you I’ve decided to share my secret recipe in case it might be your first time cooking for the holiday or you’re just looking to mix it up a bit this year. Behold.... Kathie’s Fantastic Ham! 1 10-12lb spiral ham 2 cans of pineapple rings in juice, drained 3C sugar 2C water 1/4C grainy country style Dijon mustard For the glaze (I always make the night before, but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days):
Bring the pineapple rings, sugar and water to a boil in a large saucepan. Reduce heat and simmer for 60-80 minutes, or until it has reduced down to about 4 cups. Transfer to a large bowl and after it has cooled, stir in mustard.
since there aren’t any children involved, I try to set up fun adult oriented activities in the backyard that make you feel a bit like a kid. Badminton, croquet and kickball are all super fun for any For ham on day-of: age group, and especially fun Heat oven to 325 degrees and put watching middle aged people rack in lowest position. Remove attempt things they might not all packaging and glaze packets from ham and discard. Place ham have done in awhile. After we’ve in roasting pan and pour over half all gotten our fill on Easter dinner of the glaze, sticking pineapple rings between spiral slices. Bake and games, I light up the firepit uncovered for 1.5 hours, then and everyone can relax with a baste with rest of glaze, tent with beverage and some foil and continue baking until thoroughly heated. I typically let music and just enjoy each other’s mine go about an hour and a half company. to 2 hours total. Serve by drizzling individual slices with glaze and While this might not be pineapples from pan. “traditional” it has become MY That’s the total recipe for the main family tradition and one that I look dish of the meal. While the ham is baking down below, you’ll have forward to every year. Regardless plenty of time to whip up hearty of the origin of a holiday, I see side dishes like garlic mashed no problem with celebrating potatoes, 3 cheese macaroni, sautéed green beans and deviled special moments with your eggs on the stovetop. Lastly, nearest and dearest. Life doesn’t don’t forget the rolls! You’re going always have to look like a Norman to need something for all those Rockwell painting to be valid or delicious ham leftovers! enjoyable and usually the best Easter is the perfect holiday to kick hungry guests out of the memories come in unexpected house while you’re busy preparing packages. Whatever your reason the meal. Weather permitting, it’s for the season, I hope you have a great time of year for outdoor activities. When I was a kid, my a wonderful weekend with an favorite thing to do was to dye abundance of food and happiness. Easter eggs then hunt for them See you guys around the yard. Afterward my cousins and I would have next week! egg fights, where we would try and crack one another’s eggs by tapping them against each other. Now that I’m older and

If you are a sci-fi fan you may want to consider a viewing of "The Adam Project" starring Ryan Reynolds, who I can personally take or leave as an actor. Reynolds aside, the film has the fascinating aspect of time travel, which tends to be fun in most cases. The movie begins in 2050 where we meet fighter pilot Adam Reed (Reynolds) who steals his "time" jet in order to return to 2018 on a rescue mission. As fate would have it, Adam crashlands in 2022 where he meets his 12-year-old self (Walker Scobell), who is as annoying as his adult self. After the younger Adam recovers from the shock of meeting his older self, the older Adam enlists his younger self to help repair his jet. Adult Adam reveals to young Adam he has traveled back in time to rescue his wife Laura (Zoe Saldana) who was seemingly killed after crashing in 2018. While he is in 2022 adult Adam helps his younger self deal with the bullies he had to deal with earlier in life and is able to get a bit of satisfaction by giving the bullies a taste of their own medicine. While the visiting Adam is trying to find
Pop Life
By Ken Silvers theloaferonlineprint @gmail.com
a way to travel back to 2018 he is being pursued by Maya Sorian (Catherine Keener), a businesswoman who funded a time travel project for Adam's deceased dad Louis (Mark Ruffalo). The two Adams manage to jump back to 2018, where they see their dad and have the opportunity to interact with him as old and young Adam. While in 2018, the two Adams plan to destroy their dad's particle accelerator, which is responsible for time travel. At first Louis refuses to cooperate for fear of what effect destroying the device will have on the timestream, but eventually decides to join the Adams in the effort. When the three arrive at the location of the particle accelerator, they run into the younger Maya, who is later joined by her older self. A fight to keep the particle accelerator safe begins and the end result of the fight is quite surprising. Let me just say the ending is happy for all involved, except for one character who gets a taste of karma. I did find the storyline interesting in how both Adams react in meeting their older and younger selves. How would you react if you went back in time and met your younger self? I bet we would all try to help our younger self with advice to help with the awkward years. It would also be hard to keep from telling our younger self what is coming up in the future less we endanger what is supposed to happen. Adult Adam does give his younger self some great advice about being nicer to his Mom, especially due to the untimely death of their father. The film does have several sentimental moments that will pull at your heart strings. The actors are all fine in their respective roles, and despite the fact I often find
Reynolds annoying, he is perfect as the often irritating Adam, whose role was originally to be played by Tom Cruise. Jennifer Garner is also effective as Adam's mother Ellie. The actor who portrays young Adam, Scobell, has great onscreen chemistry with Reynolds, and their banter is a highlight of the movie. If you
enjoy sci-fi films about time travel then you may enjoy "The Adam Project", a film about how second chances can be an unexpected gift. Now playing on Netflix. (Rated PG-13)

Two weeks ago I did something I haven’t done since 2019, I traveled a sizable distance. It was a quick trip back to my old stomping grounds in Nashville. Since July of last year, I had tickets to see one of my favorite bands, Sparks, at my favorite venue on this Earth, The Ryman. Sparks were absolutely amazing, by the way. Allow me to use this as a chance to tell you to run to Netflix and watch the fantastic documentary on the band, “The Sparks Brothers,” by director Edgar Wright.

I typically keep my bathroom bag under the sink in my bathroom stocked and ready to go, so I just grabbed it and sat it out and felt a sense of accomplishment that I had achieved one part of my packing. I got some ice cream and sat down for a breather in celebration.
I rushed to the grocery store and bought extra diapers, formula, and baby powder, and then went back home and packed them up into their own duffle bag. It was when I did that I remembered that I am single and do not have children. I mean, I do play “Animal Crossing” and there is an island full of anthropomorphic animals that depend on me, but I can’t deduct them from my taxes so I suppose that doesn’t count.

At this point, I thought it seemed a bit excessive. After another three hours of work, I finally got everything down to one suitcase and my weekend bag just in case. Turns out I even overpacked a bit for the trip and in “Ah. Yes. See you next week. packed full and a mostly empty the baby!?” despite having had packed a weekend bag for that work trip, I hadn’t had to deal with anything beyond that. Suddenly, after having spent two and a half years in my house, I was drawing a blank on how to pack for a trip. I knew that I needed to take basic things, under items, soap, and that stuff. I could just try standing under the running water of a shower like I was a bunch of celery getting rinsed
