Welcome Home!

School Zone: LVA students focus on the year ahead As the first day of the 2013-2014 school year approaches for students of the Las Vegas Academy, the excitement of attending a new school builds within incoming freshmen like Lexi McEachen. On the other hand, seniors mirror the thoughts of Shaina Lescano, realizing that they will soon start another chapter of their lives in nine quick months. No matter the grade level, students of the Academy hope to achieve all of their goals this upcoming school year. For McEachen, the road to being a student at the academy has already been paved. Her sister was once a student of the academy, and her aunt a teacher. "Of course there is pressure to continue," she says of the tradition, "but I welcome it. I saw how much my sister enjoyed [it], and I would be delighted to follow in her footsteps." McEachen, like all LVA incoming freshman, had to audition for her enrollment over the su mmer, and although the process can be nerve-racking and highly stressful, she advises any potential student to remain calm. "It's only as hard as you make it," she says. Already prepping for sophomore year, Amy Smith got an early head start and completed her su mmer reading assignments, which will help keep her grades on track. For Smith, participating in pageants and competitive dance outside of school will have to be balanced with staying active in the academy’s theatre and academic classes. "Use your time wisely and stay organized," she says to incoming freshmen. In order to maximize the experience, she advises new students to "be friendly, make new friends, and, of course, have fun." Ethan Snow gears up for his junior year, supposed to be "one of the hardest years in school." As Snow advances into another grade level, he leaves behind a few words of advice to incoming sophomores by saying, "Don't procrastinate. Just don't. You'll be happier." On a lighter note, Snow says, "A new school year also means a new style," as back-to-school shopping is something most students look forward to. Shaina Lescano is looking for her last year of high school to have "the right a mount of oomph to it ... A challenging, but not overwhelming, year." With her eyes focused on her drea m college, she is willing to give 100 percent and come out on top. "Junior year is a super important year to colleges. So make it count," Lescano says to the students who have gained the title of "upperclassmen" and have taken on bigger responsibilities. This upcoming year also brings challenges to academy teachers and administration personnel. Now with 20 years of existence and recently achieving the national Outstanding Arts School Award, the standards are set at an all-time high. Nonetheless, students and parents alike find confidence in LVA’s educational progra m, knowing its students are in great hands.

If you’re unwilling, or are just physically unable, to curb your food truck cravings until the next Vegas StrEATs festival (btw, it’s Saturday, Sept. 14), you no longer have to thanks to the City of Las Vegas. Yup, that’s right! Just like the glory days of when food vendors pulled the parking brake in Corporate Circle, dropped their fryer basket in sizzling hot oil, and cranked out pounds of food through a sliding glass window, that nostalgic lunchtime feeling is back, baby!

STREET EATS

On Aug. 1, the downtown area began a pilot program which allows licensed mobile food vendors to operate on public streets for longer periods of time. This new initiative brings in 15 different trucks stationed at three locations that will operate on a rotating basis, conforming to a reserved time and date schedule. Where are these nosh sessions, you ask? And how far do I have to walk, you say? Well … The places: 100 Bonneville Ave. (near the Bonneville Transportation Center), 1 Lewis Ave. (behind City Hall), and the 400 block of S. Third Street (in front of the Regional Justice Center). The walk: all within one mile. So, hours before you get hangry, you can determine what, where, and when your favorite vendor is serving up their signatures by checking out www.lasvegasnevada. gov/foodtruck or following #dtlvfoodtrucks on Twitter. According to the website, the application (built by Code for America) uses real-time data from the newly installed electronic parking meters, so it can know exactly which truck appears, and when. So, combat those nasty tummy grumbles by not waiting to be seated. Instead, walk right up, place your own order, and get on the go faster than you can say “double patty with extra mayo!”

If you stop by Inside Style, you will see Jill Ableman working in the design laboratory and atmosphere. Having lunch with Marc Ableman, CEO of Inside Style and president of the 18b association, this past summer involved his two lovely daughters lounging on the couch in their “living room” (part of the beautifully decorated showroom) and picking from a plethora of food. The conversation was relaxed and focused. As a “concerned neighbor,” Marc waxed on issues such as what it means to “live richly” and what it means to have a thriving and growing arts district in downtown Las Vegas. He said, “Artists are always the true entrepreneurs, the true creators in society.” He doesn’t judge art as simply canvas and paint but revels in the idea ideology. He says that couture is not reserved for brands we all recognize, but instead asks us to understand that couture starts somewhere; that somewhere is here. Accessible and unique wares from clothing to art and antiques to interior design and movie theaters slash galleries adds a dimension to our city likened to world-famous destinations such as Venice Beach and our very own Strip, only with a little heart and humankind behind it. The Arts District’s members’ belief in A piece of glass in a frame at a friend’s house reminded Marc of going to Laguna Beach with his dad, and it made him feel “rich,” never mind the bank account and the numbers: getting such items from local artists brings a personal connection. A personal connection with an artist may cost you a tiny bit more from your pocketbook (and not as much as the couture giants will), but Marc asked, “If you go travelling are you going to look for something authentic or go to the mall and get just what you need?” To have a few select pieces that provoke emotion will help you to live a rich life in terms of, as he says, “If I’m having a bad day, I pick up a book and put a little Chet Baker on, and that’s really what art should be. I think as a society we have diminished the importance of art in our culture from a healing standpoint and a well-being standpoint.” Think Randy Newman: “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” Don’t live on processed cheese peeps. Dare to live richer. Here’s my advice: Don’t be afraid to explore. Enrich yourself. Live richly.

Hey Zeeps. Here’s the buzz feed. In this section we’ve tracked down some stray cats. They don’t all share the same block, but they offer a wild range of dining and drinking options. With a range of choices from straight-up American to Venezuelan, Italian, Mexican and Cajun we’ve even got somewhere for you to get tripe on this list. Yeah. That’s not a typo. Tripe. Hold the “s.” There are also our most beloved and comfy dives and upscale estabs for drinks, so have a (hair)ball catting around downtown – we guarantee you’ll be licking your paws after giving this list a whirl. Don’t be a scaredy. Meow. Purr. Repeat.
