Smith Center All-Star Opening Night On March 10, 2012, the Smith Center for the Performing Arts raised the curtain on an All-Star line-up that included Neil Patrick Harris, Jennifer Hudson, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Mavis Staples, Pat Monahan, Joshua Bell, and a host of others.

Corporate Challenge Opening Ceremony closes East Fremont Live bands, BBQ, executive relay, torch lighting, it all went down last month. Don’t forget to congratulate our Zappos team on winning Gold in the executive relay.

The Las Vegas City Hall complex consists of an eleven-story tower with a three-story circular wing surrounding an open plaza. The wedge-shaped tower is clad in marble and glass and considered a good example of 1960s modernist design. The original eleven-story central tower was completed in 1973. An addition was completed in 2003, which included a three-story surround to the central tower. The addition includes additional office space, a parking deck, and a sky bridge to connect the parking deck to the structure. The addition won the American Institute of Architects Nevada Citation award in 2003.

The City Hall workspace will be designed to inspire and accelerate collaboration and serendipitous interactions between employees. As a design challenge we consider the workspace to include primary workspaces, collaboration areas, the outdoors and the larger community. If we're successful we'll create an adaptable and collaborative workspace that allows employees to be mobile.

DOWNTOWN 3rd Farmers Market

Ecomom CEO Jody Sherman says that what sets ecomom apart from other mom-targeted commerce sites is its expert curation, with an editorial staff culling eco-friendly and healthy products.

The Downtown 3rd Farmers Market, which launched March 9, showcases both Nevada-grown produce and the selections of “intuitive forager” Kerry Clasby, who travels the California coast picking up fruits and vegetables and delivering them to farmers markets and chefs in California and Nevada.

“Everything that goes in, on, or around a growing family is available and every product has been deeply researched and evaluated against over 70 separate criteria — focusing first on ‘is it healthy and safe’ then ‘is it useful and cost effective,’ “he says. The site offers anything from diapers to nail polish to parents who want healthier product options for their children.

Wearing an apron and a straw sun hat, Clasby darts around the market, chatting up customers and purveyors, stopping for a drink at Grouchy John’s coffee truck, teasing friends and doling out samples of giant white carrots, kishu tangerines and more.

Why move to Las Vegas?

“We’re going to have more, and more, and more,” she says, surveying the inaugural market. And one week later she already does.

“Because I hate the beach,” Sherman joked. He added that he sees the financial benefit of fewer taxes. But he also foresees the benefit of other tech/Internet-driven companies populating downtown, allowing them to share and feed off one another.

That’s good for business, he said.

“Tony’s vision for downtown is exciting,” he said. “This area is ripe for redevelopment, and having an anchor like Zappos is going to draw a lot of young companies to the area.”

Downtown 3rd is actually an indoor market inside the empty bus terminal building next to the Mob Museum on Stewart St. The building has sat unused for two years, according to Clasby, and Mayor Caroline Goodman donated the space to the nonprofit market, held every Friday from 9am - 2pm.

With long indoor aisles under shiny copper ceilings, a round central kiosk and covered outdoor sidewalks that stretch away from the building, the space seems made for a market.

FUN FACTS DID YOU KNOW?

Fremont Street was the first paved street in Las Vegas.

Fremont Street dates back to 1905, when Las Vegas itself was founded. Fremont Street was the first paved street in Las Vegas in 1925 and received the city's first traffic light in 1931.

Fremont Street also carried the shields of U.S. 95, U.S. 93, and U.S. 466 before the construction of the interstates.

7 Questions with Mayor Carolyn Goodman ~ What will you miss the most at the "old City Hall"?

A: The old City Hall was where all of the amazing projects that are now coming to fruition got their start. Many important decisions and discussions occurred in the council chambers at 400 Stewart Ave. For me personally it will always have a special place in my heart because that is where my husband went to work every day for 12 years, a place where all of his fascinating memorabilia came to rest and intrigue visitors, and of course a place I really enjoyed occupying for the brief first eight months of my tenure as mayor. ~ What are you happy to leave behind from the "old City Hall"?

A: I certainly won’t miss the broken blinds or rattling air conditioning in my office. ~ What is the coolest thing about the "new city hall"?

A: The new City Hall benefits all of our constituents by reducing the energy costs that the city pays thanks to the building’s sustainable design. City Hall created more than 1,800 jobs during construction and is part of our overall economic development plan for the city. Convenience is another benefit that the new City Hall offers, as the building is located in close proximity to the courts and other government buildings. It really is a building that our residents can be proud of. The hand-in-glove aspect about the building is that it clears the way for Zappos to move into the old City Hall. This is a perfect marriage that is just beginning, a real public-private partnership! ~ The "new city hall" is beautifully lit up at night. What is the story behind the amazing lights on the building?

A: The LED lights on the outside of the building are quite spectacular and add to the overall uniqueness of it. We are the city of Las Vegas and we should have a City Hall that represents our great city and the people who live here.

Around the world Las Vegas is known for being the Entertainment Capital of the World and for its neon lights.

Thus I like to think of the lights on the outside of the building as a small ode to our fabulous city of Las Vegas.

~ Be honest; is Oscar jealous he didn’t get to move into the "new City Hall"?

A: I am the one who really felt sad for him. He’s been a brave old soul that he could not occupy the office he and Howard Elkus designed specifically for “the mayor.” The mayor’s area comes replete with a magnificent office, a pressconference room, a reception area and a balcony designed for an occasional cigar and celebrations with dignitaries who visit our fabulous city. The views are extraordinary and Symphony Park is the focal piece along with the Frank Gehry designed Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Brain Institute. Luckily for Oscar, he has a pretty good relationship with the current mayor so maybe he’ll get a chance to visit the balcony for a cigar now and then. ~ The Smith Center just opened; what show are you most looking forward to seeing?

A: The Smith Center is a remarkable and grand structure easily comparable to the finest theaters and performing arts venues in the world. Growing up in Manhattan, I was immersed in culture as a necessary part of life, so I am extremely excited to be awaiting the debuts of Broadway shows, ballet, opera, orchestral groups, performers, jazz musicians, soloists and others as they visit our city to perform. ~ Any final words of advice for Zappos team members as we get closer to moving into our new home?

A: My advice is to continue to build on the momentum and the great energy that has been started downtown.

Use your ideas, imagination and creativity to help push this city to be all that it can and should be. You are part of today and all of the tomorrows doing just that, and I have all the confidence in the world that you will be an enormous driving force in the city of Las Vegas for years to come. Welcome to the city of Las Vegas!
