This month we take you around to some Sweet Spot(s). No matter what your relationship status, or whether you are a party animal or a homebody, there’s something inside for you. This month has brought some new, fun stuff to do before and after Valentine’s day, and since love abounds, nobody has to be bummed about the official day coming on a Thursday: we’ve got things to do all month long (queue Lionel Richie … all night long, all night … all night … All night long)! So, shake off those winter blues as you head into February full steam ahead as spring is on the horizon, according to our furry friend, Punxsutawney Phil! With the inside scoop and slightly warmer temps you’ll be able to shed unwanted clothing and show a little more skin as you primp and prime at the Golden Nugget’s spa for Valentine’s Day. If V-Day isn’t really your thing and you still want that tingly, hot and spicy feeling, but don’t have the cash to get to NOLA for Mardi Gras, hit up Lola’s Louisiana Kitchen for some Cajun flava. PAST EVENTS MLK Parade

On the same day President Barack Obama was inaugurated for a second term, those around the country and Las Vegas celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The 31st annual parade was held on Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. and had an estimated headcount of more than 18,000 onlookers as Gov. Brian Sandoval, school children, parade dancers, and fire trucks made their way through nine blocks up Fourth Street in the downtown area between Hoover and Ogden avenues. Following the parade was the MLK Dream Fest event which provided food, cultural vendors, and car show entertainment for the entire family.

State of the City Speech

Hey downtowners! You were featured in Mayor Carolyn Goodman’s annual state of the place talk (State of the City Speech) on Jan. 10. Optimism abounded and abated the worries of these hard times we’ve been through, and downtown is playing an important role. She’s quoted saying, “We are in rebound here in Las Vegas, believe it or not. […] We’ve already created a solid social and residential base in downtown Las Vegas.” Goodman cited that “cutting-edge green action” and the construction of the new city hall and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts among investments in several buildings and businesses downtown have not only created construction jobs but also captured the attention of visitors and tourists. She also spoke of several future projects (e.g., the pedestrian bridge that will connect the Smith Center and Main Street — imagine walking over for a show after dinner), and somewhere in there she mentioned our boss. You heard it here first, folks: Goodman seemed to acknowledge that by participating in downtown we are participating in the larger community of Las Vegas and driving recovery in more ways than one.

Downtown Trivia Night

Downtown Trivia Night had its one-year anniversary on Tuesday, Jan. 29. The Beat was packed to the seams with some of the brainiest folks in the community, all competing for amazing prizes but mostly bragging rights! The night started off with free food from The Beat and amazing beer specials. First place winners walked away with free bottle service and VIP table from Insert Coin(s). Second place wasn’t too bad either, with the team nabbing box seats at the Smith Center. Organizer Augusta Scott was quoted as saying, “I can’t believe it’s been a year since we started. We probably had four teams on our first night. Tonight we had 19 teams with over a hundred participants. It really takes a team to pull this off every two weeks. I want to thank my team of volunteers, Greg, Jim, Lauren, Vanessa, Veronica, Stevie, Vincent S. and Vincent Q., without their hard work this would not have grown to the levels we are seeing today. I also want to thank our amazing sponsors in the community. Insert Coin(s), The Beat, Le Thai, Uncle Joe’s Pizza, DCR, Mob Bar, Coterie and DTP. Without their generous support we wouldn’t have the great prizes and venue we have today.”

The Stitch Factory Opening

The Stitch Factory, a coworking space created for designers, officially launched its business on Jan. 17 with a grand opening event at 300 N. Las Vegas Blvd. The event’s theme was inspired by 1940s-era clothing which added fun to the evening’s vibrancy. Throughout the night, inspiring fashionistas/fashionistos enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, varied musical performances, and a ceremonial fashion show. The new space allows designers to work on their collections through the use of industrial machines, dress forms and working tables as well as offering design and makeup classes to those with an entrepreneurial spirit.

Catalyst Week? What’s that?

Catalyst Week was a series of talks Jan. 24-26 meant to inspire and educate listeners. Four to five people were slated to speak each day, which began at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Downtown Project Construction Zone trailers (158 S. Seventh St.) and wrapped up Saturday, covered topics such as learning to handle rejection and turning it into an opportunity, reimagining the future, and entrepreneurial aspects, including how to give back through this spirit. The first Catalyst Week took place in November, and with another successful run in January, keep your eyes peeled for the next one by going to the Downtown Project’s website.

Fried Chicken Night at eat

Yum! The finest, freshest breakfast and lunch joint in downtown Las Vegas also does dinner, but they only do it once a month! Chef Nat has been hosting a very special all-you-can-eat fried chicken and fixings night at eat. It only happens once a month, and you have to figure out the date on your own (it’s very hushhush). But if you are lucky enough to get an invite, don’t pass it up. It is a BYOB event and a relaxed atmosphere with a set menu of mashed potatoes, braised greens, mac & cheese, cornbread, biscuits, and, of course, fried chicken. If that wasn’t enough, the meal was topped off with some of the best banana pudding I have ever had. To say this meal was finger licking good is an understatement; I wanted to lick the whole table!!

Despite the unseasonably cold weather, hundreds of Zapponians and their guests embarked on an adventure to the Old West, also known as Bonnie Springs Ranch. This year’s Western theme had a range of cowpokes dressed up in their finest boots, blue jeans, and lots and lots of flannel. With several activities including karaoke, dancing, and photo booths at various saloons, an ace-high night was had by all. And nothing says “Western” more than shooting shots … of alcohol with your closest compadres!

UPDATE: CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT Wow, can you believe it is already 2013? Can you believe that we will be moving to our new campus THIS YEAR!?! A lot has been happening since our last campus update, so we wanted to bring you up to speed on some of the exciting things that we’ve been working on. Construction We are happy to report that the construction of our new campus is on time and on budget! Our construction crews have been working diligently on our new home and have completed demolition and the construction work needed to rebuild the infrastructure of the building. As it currently stands, we are on track to open in October. It will be here before we know it! The Move We’re starting the week-by-week planning of who will move when. Our goal is to start moving teams the first week of September and finish by early October. That’s more than 200 people per week! We aim to do this with as little disruption as possible, so we’ll be working with teams over the next two months to build a plan that works for all of us. Stay tuned! Furniture We’ve been working closely with our interior design team on selecting furniture for all of

the cool spaces that we’ll have at our new campus, and part of this furniture selection process has been focused on our new desks. That’s right, we are all getting new desks when we move downtown! If you’ve been hanging around the Henderson offices, you’ve likely seen a few of these trial desks set up in the old 6pm area as you head to the Bistro in 2280. These desks are open for you to use, so feel free to take them for spin, kick those proverbial tires, and let us know what you think. There is a link to a short survey on each of the six desks.

LEED Certification Zappos is pursuing LEED certification for our new home as part of our commitment to sustainability. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is essentially an internationally recognized standard for environmental friendliness. There is a long list of requirements that need to be met in order to obtain LEED certification, and Zappos is currently on track to be LEED Silver certified! Photo Studio Our new Zappos photo studio is coming along quickly! We’ve selected a location (just over a mile from our new campus), construction is well under way, and we have a planned occupancy date of Feb. 14 … Valentine’s Day.

COMMUNITY The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada is moving from its mere 6,000 square feet of space to a completely renovated building, of 16,000 square feet, on the corner of Maryland Parkway and Lewis Avenue, dubbed The Robert L. Forbuss Building. Administrators of The Center looked for two years before deciding on this location, which they hope will create better visibility and an easier access point in the community and bring the neighbors in. The new digs will feature free Wi-Fi, freshly baked bread every morning, a sports court, outdoor and indoor seating areas, a cafĂŠ and a health & wellness center. While the grand opening of The Center in its new location wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be until April 6, these folks sure could use a helping hand moving in. Neon Museum and Boneyard The Neon Museum preserves and exhibits classic Las Vegas neon signs. The museum’s collection consists of both restored and unrestored signs, mostly housed in the Neon Boneyard in downtown Las Vegas. Many of the restored neon signs, which can be found along the Fremont Street Experience and Las Vegas Boulevard, are also part of the museum’s collection. Real Results Boot Camp

The Downtown3rd Farmers Market has become an integral part of downtown Las Vegas. The biggest indoor farmers market showcases local Las Vegas farmers as well as including lots of fresh produce from California. First Friday is celebrated in the Arts District of downtown Las Vegas. The hub is on Casino Center Boulevard in between Colorado Street & California Street with an extension on Third Street & Colorado Street. First Friday has been extended to include the Fremont East district with live activities and music in Get Back Alley behind Beauty Bar and The Griffin. First Friday celebrates young and established local artists. There are food trucks galore and music on three stages with over 12 live bands. Located on Las Vegas Boulevard at Ogden, Siegel’s Gold Spike is a small boutique hotel and casino that bills itself as “friendliest casino in Vegas.” The casino bar is located next to the sports book on the first floor. Price Point: For Real? My friend and I ordered two 16 oz. well drinks and received a bill for $7. As much as I like to see and be seen in some of downtown’s swankier establishments, I’m an even bigger fan of saving money. Plus there’s special employee pricing, so check the Wiki. Ambiance: Minimal Although the Gold Spike has recently been renovated, I don’t think there was much love shown to the bar. The area is a good size and there is plenty of seating, but the ambiance is pretty limited. Think of your favorite neighborhood bar — that one in your hometown where you scored your first underage beer and where Dad went to catch a game once in a while. Yeah. It’s like that.

I wouldn’t make a special trip downtown to drink here, but the Gold Spike is a great place to begin a Friday night of barhopping and a convenient spot for happy hour after a day at the Carson office. Entertainment: Make Your Own Fun! Our bartender was polite about the coupons we had and happily made us our Pineapple Upside-Down Cake cocktails, and she wasn’t overly chatty. Since the weeknight crowd is thin, our only entertainment was conversation and the NBA game playing on the televisions over the bar. If mingling and/or people watching is your preference, definitely check this place out on a Friday or Saturday night. Pitfalls: Size Matters Since the Gold Spike is a boutique hotel, the casino itself is pretty small. The hotel offers free valet parking Friday−Sunday, and there is an extremely petite parking lot next to the pool, but Zapponians will probably find it more convenient to park in the Stewart garage next door.

A Louisiana Kitchen

Upon entering Lola’s, the first thing I noticed was the Cajun music playing. I haven’t spent much time in New Orleans, but the two things that I loved most about NOLA were the food and the music. Lola’s hits both of these on the head with authority. We started off with an order of crab and artichoke dip as well as a plate of oysters. Before I could even get my camera out to take a picture, the oysters were just about gone, and my fiancé was digging into the crab dip! We ended up getting an order of hushpuppies as well since they were highly recommended. I had a side salad with dressing made in-house with a vinegar base. I almost licked the salad bowl; that’s how great this dressing was. Seriously, it’s some kind of wonderful!!!

Their house bread is made and frozen in New Orleans and shipped to Las Vegas. It’s lightly glazed with butter and toasted to perfection. We ordered different entrees, and all were equally amazing. Seafood gumbo, spicy jambalaya and grilled salmon were some of the delightful dishes at our table. I had a burger and some of the best fries I have ever tasted. They were lightly salted and super yummy! Dessert was chocolate cake à la mode and fresh coffee. Our bill came to $105 for four people … Not bad!! The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was fabulous!

He Said, breakfast: One of the reasons that I love breakfast so much is because it’s usually so cheap. El Gaucho doesn’t disappoint in this category with breakfast items (in hearty portions) ranging from $4-7. I highly recommend their breakfast wraps. Where I grew up, Chorizo flavoring was a big deal, and the Chorizo they use here lives up to my high standards. In addition, I’ve heard only good things about their other breakfast wraps. Plus, they serve breakfast all day, which is key for sleep-lovers such as myself.

lunch: Not gonna lie, I usually get breakfast for lunch when I come here since it’s so good; however, on this trip I decided to try that day’s $6 special — a steak burrito. I was underwhelmed to say the least. The flavor was pretty bland, and the presentation lacked. Also, the wait time that my compadre noted in her review made that experience an even bigger letdown.

I was very surprised to see such a modern coffee & espresso menu. They use Illy — which is actually really good gourmet coffee and espresso. Continuing with my drink sweet tooth, I ordered a white chocolate mocha (reasonably priced at $3.50, and you can get them to go). While it wasn’t quite on the level of a Grouchy John’s, it was still well worth the price. They’ve also got some nice bottled beer and liquor choices for those looking for something more … adult.

The hole-in-the-wall feeling combined with the close proximity (literally steps away from the Carson office), great prices, and delicious breakfasty-goodness was enough to offset the long wait time and underwhelming steak burrito in my mind. I’ve gotten “Gauched” several times, and my overall experience has always been well above average. Stick with vthe breakfast wraps & sandwiches, coffees and empanadas, and you’ll be more than happy you did. Well, as long as you’ve got some time to wait for them. ...

breakfast: Confession time: I don’t like eggs. That means that breakfast places in general don’t do a thing for me. The breakfast potatoes here are solid, and both the pancakes and French toast are crispy and delicious, but they’re not really my thing. This church-turned-restaurant has limited staff, so wait times are typically high, regardless of your party size. If you’re in a hurry it’s best to call ahead for pickup.

lunch: I’m a fan of the hot sandwiches here, particularly the Hot Pastrami and the Rueben. For $8.95 you get a large sandwich served with fries or a garden-variety, iceberg lettuce salad. You may want to note that there aren’t too many healthy options here, and the few that are offered are pretty uninspired. Lunch here is best when I’m not counting calories.

extras: The varied menu includes everything from diner favorites to traditional Argentinean fare. Homemade empanadas are available in a variety of flavors for just $2 as are a variety of pastries — including an insanely delicious Dulce de Leche one — which are $1.

overall rating: I like the food here, and the coffee is outstanding, but the lack of healthy options and the speed of service take it down a few notches for me. I’m happy to “get Gauched” if I have loads of time or someone offers to call in my order for me, but I wouldn’t make a special trip.

SPA SHOW Right upstairs from the hustle and bustle of the gambling floor at the Golden Nugget, the chatter of its visitors, and whizzing traffic of Fremont Street, is Courtney Taylor’s oasis-like play space. Referring to herself as “the spa girl,” Courtney hails from New Jersey via UNLV’s hospitality college, has opened several spas in Las Vegas, and is on the board of the Las Vegas Spa Association (LVSA). She’s been the spa director at the Golden Nugget for five years. Courtney and her team go through boxes of products and see what works. Each treatment on the menu is unique to the spa.

The reception desk is nicely decorated, but then I walked into the actual spa lobby. All mirrors and mirrored doors, this space operates as a central hub to different areas of service. Quiet workers swiftly going here and there and in and out from behind what seemed like the walls were like ghosts. There’s no need for a do not disturb sign here. All employees speak in hushed voices and pleasantly calm rhythms, and as I was guided from one therapist to another I felt a bit as though I had entered some kind of dreamland where my fuzzybrained head had only to find the next warm place to lie down and relax again. Head, shoulders, knees and toes: Organic Soothing Massage The organic aromatherapy massage was a real treat. Attention to detail was what set the experience apart. Each massage room is equipped with a sink, and the therapist washed his hands before

beginning. As an additional perk, this made his hands warm, and that made me happy. The pedi: Red Velvet Pedicure I’m the kind of girl who looks for a deal — the last time I had a pedicure at a real spa was for a special occasion in 2008. But the $20 joints have their drawbacks … like club toe. I like a French manicure not because it has “French” in the name, as if I would suddenly become très chic if I got one, but because it’s supposed to look clean, pretty, and elegant in an understated but touch-of-glimmer kind of way: i.e., the little white line is supposed to be little, not thick — thick results in an awkward set of hugelooking toes. Lisa, my pedicurist, finally got it. I think I’m sold on paying the extra little bit of money to get it right and get something that lasts. Continued on page 31

WDOWN The Golden Nugget Has a Little Gem (Part II) By Michael Boley Okay, guys. Before you go bashing spas and thinking it’s all girly to get your nails done, try this logic on for size. Every man wants to look their best to attract attention from the same or opposite sex. Whether this constitutes frequent haircuts, beard trims, or even manscaping, you want to look suave from top to (possibly waxing your) bottom … And what better way to take care and pamper yourself than hitting up the spa? With so much to take in, the Golden Nugget truly customizes its smorgasbord of amenities and packages to its male customer base.

Due to the combination of hunching over my screen at work and occasionally hitting the gym, this is exactly what I needed. The Sports massage is custom-created with various oils to target tired muscles and relieve stress points of dead tissue. With a dark backdrop and soothing surround sound music this hour-long rubdown had put me in a dazed relaxation. The massage therapist was extremely considerate and did not impede my session with chatter — which, let’s be honest, limited convo’s are at the top of all of our lists.

Having never been to a spa, one would anticipate the environment to be similar to a typical massage therapy/nail business. However, upon walking into the welcoming lobby I was greeted by my male concierge who directed me to the men’s passageway of bliss. At this point I was given water, moccasins, and a thick, cozy robe before being shown into the lounge. Taking in my surroundings I noticed the area was Hugh Hefner’ed out with leather armchairs, an LCD television, Jacuzzi, and a wet and dry sauna. The only thing missing was a box of Cuban cigars.

Next was the Gentleman’s Facial. As a person that uses the same face wash each morning, I was hesitant to have additional soaps lathered on in fear of skin irritation or breaking out, but was willing to give it a shot. The cleansing, which again lasted a full hour, had several aspects to it. The soaps and moisturizers massaged within smelled intoxicatingly fresh as well as what I assume were vegetables placed over my eyelids. Other stages included vapor steaming, hot and cold towel placement, plucking of blackheads and whiteheads, and the infamous head massage. This combination of facial treatment had put me in a Zen state of mind I did not want to relinquish. No aftereffect of skin irritation or breaking out was had.

As part of my day’s spa package, I was treated to the Sports Massage and Pedicure along with the Gentleman’s Facial … Something every guy should do. Here’s my POV:

Head and shoulders above the rest: Absolute Pearl Brightening Facial Since, as I’ve pointed out, I’m usually not down to spend a lot, I’ve never tried a facial. It just seemed like too much hard-earned cash to pay someone to lather my face with cucumber cream (I can do that for ten bucks myself). After this spa treatment, I am a facial convert. First, Jessica, my spa artist as I’ve taken to calling her, blasted me with steam and removed my make-up as I lazily sat back on the heated massage table (talk about pampered). The whole time I wondered exactly what kind of vegetable was covering my eyes, but it turned out they were cotton rounds soaked in ice-cold water. Next was a lathering involving several steps followed by an exfoliation and then more slathering and lathering. A face massage (yes. a face massage), and neck, shoulders, arms, hands, and scalp massages followed all as I basked in the moisturizer, warmth, and nearly fell away to sleep. Attention to detail, which is very nearly core value number 11 for me, is apparent throughout the spa. Here I was, standing near the shower after being massaged ten different ways, slathered, lathered, clipped, painted and lotioned some more, looking like medusa gone all wrong, standing there, wondering how I was going to put my clothes on without ruining them with all this (lovely) gunk on me. A hair tie so I could take a quick rinse would have done the trick, but I didn’t think to bring one. Alas, there was an assortment of baskets with courtesy items in them, including one with hair ties. The showers are stocked with shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash, fresh, soft towels and personal one-time-use bath mats. Everything was so very clean and professional, but the ambiance was that of a splendid home bathroom where everything you need is at your fingertips — no need to haul everything back and forth. And for shy ladies, there is even a changing room. I say, it’s super easy to get downtown and try out this experience for yourself, so what are you doing sitting here with me? Get on the phone and schedule yourself some spa time so you’re fresh on Valentine’s Day, or any day!

The Sports Pedi was the next and final stop on the tour. My feet are definitely no Lloyd Christmas, but could have used some sparkle. As I sat in the personally controlled massage chair with my feet resting in warm water, the pedicurist went at it. Each foot was scrubbed for dead skin followed by a relaxed lathering of creams. My nails were clipped, buffed, and polished to perfection and looked amazingly better than before. Added Bonus: my toenails are snag-free when putting on socks! In conclusion, guys, there’s nothing wrong with pampering yourself at the spa. You already groom yourself at home, so release those bad toxins and leave the Golden Nugget looking and feeling even more mansome than you already are.

Before you dis package mixes, try my twist! By Mandy Crispin

Start to finish: 1–3 hours Ninja Choppers: 30 mins., Relaxed Lollygaggers: approx. 1 hour

Serves 4 Make the *fondue recipe on the back of the Parma Rosa® Pasta Sauce Mix package in one pot and combine all other sauce ingredients in a separate pot to start.

Ingredients:

light cream 1 box rigatoni pasta

1 package Knorr® Parma Rosa® Pasta Sauce Mix

1 cup milk

½ cup light cream

2 tbsp. vodka (*optional)

¼ cup grated parmesan cheese

¼ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

In separate pot:

1 can cream of mushroom condensed soup

Optional:

½ can of water

½ can crushed tomatoes

(to be added to soup)

½ –1 diced red bell pepper

2 minced! habanero peppers (*optional but recommended — warning these are hot)

Diced carrots, Freshly cut broccoli, Diced chicken

Directions: If you are making diced chicken and steamed carrots and broccoli, work in the process of cooking those, separately, at any point depending on planned total cook time; note that it is better to let the sauce sit on low heat (stirring often) for a while (recommend at least one hour) once it’s complete so the flavors melt together.

First combine cream of mushroom condensed soup, half can of water, half can of crushed tomatoes, and red bell pepper *add habaneros at this step. Set on low heat.

Blend Knorr® Parma Rosa sauce mix, milk, cream and vodka in small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low, then stir in cheeses. Simmer, stirring frequently, until cheeses are melted and mixture is thickened, about 2 minutes.

Combine the two pots; stir often; allow habaneros time to melt into the sauce (you do not want to bite into a raw piece); salt to taste.

At the plating stage, I like to place rigatonis, dress with sauce, top with diced chicken, and ring around the steamed veggies.

What else is in your background? I’ve always been a retailer since I was in high school. After school I started managing stores, for the most part luxury goods stores … Giorgio Armani, Gucci, most recently Loro Piana, and I oversaw a couple stores for them. After about five years with Loro Piana I was laid off, and I was at the point in my career where I could move on to the next thing. When I first got to Vegas, I was exploring neighborhoods, and I was in downtown and thought ... it’s so cool. But 10 years ago there was no Juhl, no SoHo, no Newport Lofts, I couldn’t find what I wanted downtown, and I thought, “someone needs do something,” … and now I’m part of that someone! I started researching businesses, and I knew it was going to be downtown, but I didn’t know what it was going to be. When did you realize you wanted to open your own candy store? Sometimes people ask me, “Did you always want to have a candy store?” Really, no! I always wanted to be downtown and have a business. Why downtown? Where else would it be? I don’t want to be in one of the monster casinos. The thing I love about my shop is I’m right on the street, and I literally, every morning, go outside and sweep the front porch like back in the day. I go out and sweep up the leaves like I’m in a metropolis city like New York. It just feels like I’m part of the community — I know the neighbors, and the neighbors know me. It just feels so different, and you just can’t get that in Summerlin. You can’t get that in Henderson. That doesn’t exist; it only exists downtown. How long did it take you to find your location? I worked with a real estate friend who grew up here, and she has a lot of ties to the community. We looked at a couple of spaces, but none of them were quite right. I’m always driving, checking things out, looking at neighborhoods downtown, especially because it’s changing so quickly now. I was driving by the space, and I just saw it. So I parked, got out the car, peeked in the windows, took a couple pictures of the exterior, sent them to my agent and asked her to work on it and see what ISSUE 11

she found. The building was built in ‘64 and there’s that great old mid-century brick outside on the façade … . I knew I could infuse the look with a more modern space, so that appealed to me. Tell us about your candy shop! The store – I wanted the product to really shine, so I used very little color. Now when you look at the space you see these great pops of hot pink, but the candy itself is backed in white. All the fixtures are white, the walls are white, the floors went dark grey, and we laid a new floor on the old concrete floor. I wanted the space to be really minimal and for the candy to really speak. The fixtures have clean lines, there’s very little embellishment, and the candy itself is in the glass jars and really becomes the focus. Product – I call them categories. I have five or six categories. One that was really important to me [was] to pay homage to the neighborhood and the building … so a lot of the candies in the store are retro candy you just can’t find anymore. Can you name a few vintage candies? The oldies – Chick-O-Stick, Zaggnut, GooGoo Cluster, then some old ones for the early 1900s. I think 1918 is when Idaho Spud came out. If you had been to Idaho you know Idaho Spud, but most of the country doesn’t. I did research in finding very unique candy that would bring back memories. The gummies – I wanted to appeal to kids and adults. … I did my best to find some real unique ones like gummy army men and the peachy penguins. Some of those have become the best sellers because they’re unique. The taffy – I didn’t realize how much I love taffy until I started selling taffy. I have 20 flavors, and I rotate out a couple of them once a month, so I’m always getting something different. The taffies are awesome — chewy and sweet. Some unique flavors are maple bacon, frosted cupcake, and buttered popcorn.

CULTURE: NEW BUSINESS - SWEET SPOT CANDY SHOP

Most people have an interesting story of how they came to live in Las Vegas … I was working in Dallas, Texas working for Gucci; my background is luxury goods. Gucci asked me to move to Las Vegas, and I honestly had been to Las Vegas maybe once when I was a kid and never since then. It wasn’t really on my radar; it wasn’t my town, so I thought. So, without hesitating, I said yes! It was almost 10 years ago. Vegas has been awesome for me, and that’s what got me here.

The gourmet chocolates – I work with a manufacture in northern California and they’re extraordinary! These are some really, really beautiful chocolates: some caramels, covered nuts, some fruit chocolates. They are really beautiful and elegant. Retro sodas – In glass bottles! I searched high and low … because there’s nothing like a soda out of a glass bottle. I don’t have Coke; I don’t have Pepsi. I don’t have any of that common stuff. I have five or six different flavors from the Popshop, originally from Southern California; Big Red from Texas, which is a real sweet cream soda; Bubble Up, even older than 7-UP

and is a lemon lime soda; and I’ve got unique flavors like peach, strawberry, and all the grapefruit flavors. Share the pink dog. Why the pink dog? Why not be a pink dog? I need there to be a mascot. I’m a goofy guy, and I wanted there to be some whimsy … and that dog has been great because people want to take their picture with [it]. Do you have a favorite candy store that inspired you? There is a couple I took a bit of inspiration from: one in San Francisco called the Candy Store, and they’ve got a really clean aesthetic; they also use the glass containers. Mine is much more interactive. If you come into Sweet Spot Candy Shop, you scoop your own candy … and can mix things together and get a little bit of everything, and then the next time you come back you really know what you want. There’s another store in Phoenix called Smeeks. That store is a cool candy store, but it has a lot of other stuff. I didn’t want to do all the novelties and the toys, but that store has a little bit of edge to them; it has a cool vibe. Did you eat candy as a child? I had strict parents. My father was a physician, so if there was candy in the house it was dark chocolate, and that was pretty much it. What’s been a lot of fun for me is seeing the response of my customers who see something they remember as a kid and that for me is brand new. I’m enjoying [the candy] for the first time, but they are enjoying it again after years of not having seen

it. Outside of your own efforts, what else is inspiring you about the current movement downtown? I don’t even know where to start. I’m trying to absorb all the projects and everything that’s happening, but it’s hard to keep up because there is so much. I don’t have one source to go to for information, but I’m constantly trying to see what’s going on. Tell us where you are located. The shop is on Las Vegas Boulevard. I’m right between Garces and Bonneville, directly across from the Graceland Wedding Chapel. Do you have any words of advice for Zappos employees as we transition downtown? I would say explore. When you get on foot and start walking around, you find little hidden gems. Like I said before, I don’t find one place to get all my information. I have to absorb from different places, and over time we’ll all learn where to go for what we’re looking for. Dear Peeps: I won’t say I Told You So. But …

Now y’all may have read about the flu vaccine being about 62% effective. This rate refers to ALL age groups, including the very old and very young — groups that typically don’t mount good immune responses from the vaccine. The efficacy is higher in the majority of folks, and sometimes if it doesn’t prevent flu it at least lessens the symptoms. In any case — unlike in the condom industry — a 62 percent rate of protection is MUCH better than zero percent. At least, that’s what my high school math teacher keeps telling me (I was held back … A LOT).

Recall, dear readers, that at our August 2012 All Hands Meeting I implored everyone to take advantage of the free flu shots that Zappos was offering. We also did a free flu shot clinic in Downtown in October that was a huge success. Still, I suspect that many Zapponians thought I was like Chicken Little running around shouting about the sky falling. Well, NOW who’s little? Oh ... still me I guess. Regardless of my height, the sky IS falling. The flu season is in full effect, slamming the country into submission … Gangnam style. (Sorry, too soon?)

Las Vegas Academy: “Oklahoma!” end our senior year the way we began it … Together!” Rehearsals for the musical are usually every day after school until 6 p.m. “It is hard sometimes when it comes to academics; we have to maintain good grades in order to be in the show and that really pushes everyone to work extra hard,” says Kelley Flaherty who plays Gertie. Andrews, playing Mrs. Parker, practices his part away from school and rehearsals. “I walk around in the house with my cowboy outfit on and I rope my family. That is not a joke,” he says.

Here at Las Vegas Academy, February is a big month for us. Between the Sadie Hawkins Dance (the nontraditional dance in which girls invite boys) and the opening of the musical “Oklahoma!”, students are busier than ever. Musical mania paused on Saturday, Feb. 9 to celebrate ‘Sadies,’ themed “Love Around The World,” where couples show up to the school dance sporting matching outfits. After that weekend, though, it’s crunch time for students involved in the musical. After months of rehearsals, the production dates are set to begin Feb. 21 and go until March 9, when the performances will come to a close. “Oklahoma!” is one of the less popular musicals LVA has done in quite a few years. Before the musical was officially announced in November, students had heard that the musical would be “Chess.” “‘Chess’ or ‘Oklahoma!’? Hmmm hard decision,” says Casey Andrews, a cast member, with a hint of sarcasm. Vocal major Allison Conelly describes the musical as “a classic [that] will draw people in for ticket sales.” “Oklahoma!” was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein in the 1940s. This “Great

American Musical” is set in the Western plains at the beginning of the 1900s. It portrays a “high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys” and, like all good musicals, a forbidden love story between the two main characters. This is a special year for both the school and the musical. This year, LVA is celebrating its 20 years of existence as a magnet school and it also happens to be the 70th anniversary of “Oklahoma!”, part of the reason it was chosen this year. Students come together from all majors, the biggest groups from the theater, dance, and music departments. Auditions for the musical were held over a period of a few days, taking place months before rehearsals began, and were open to the entire school. Of the 300 students who auditioned, 10 percent — 30 students — were cast as members (excluding production team, technicians, and pit members). The cast said they enjoy having a small group of students because they all get to know each other very well and become like a family.

For many cast members, “Oklahoma!” will be their last musical at Las Vegas Academy. “I feel my time has been maximized by the opportunities I have been blessed to receive and the amount of hard work and dedication I have given to the theater department,” Ivey says. After working so hard each year, musicals are always something for teachers and students alike to be proud of. “I think the show is going to be spectacular and no one will want to miss it,” says Ivey. “Oklahoma!” opens Thursday, Feb. 21, and tickets can be purchased at www.lvacademytheatre.org. Fabulous Downtown Valentine’s Day Las Vegas is not just the “Entertainment Capital of the World,” but it is also the “Wedding Capital of the World.” With dozens of wedding chapels dotting the landscape Las Vegas has become a popular destination for couples to tie the knot, especially around Valentine’s Day. Since Nevada liberalized its marriage and divorce laws back in the 1930s, it has become a mecca for celebrity weddings, too. Pepsi-Cola magnate Alfred Steele and Joan Crawford married at the Flamingo in 1955; Sammy Davis, Jr. and Loray White got hitched at the Sands in 1958; Betty White and Allen Ludden got married at the Sahara in 1963; Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu tied the knot at the Aladdin in 1967.
