BAMFORD CHAPEL Mission/Vision Statement MISSION TO MAKE KNOWN THE GOOD NEWS OF THE LOVE OF GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST
WORSHIP We believe as a congregation that our worship should be wholehearted and meaningful as we join together in praise and thanksgiving to God. In response to God’s love, we wish to express our joy, to open our hearts to God’s voice and to respond to His word.
LEARNING Recognising our need to learn of God and from God, we seek to provide an environment within which learning and teaching can take place. We would want to enable each person to accept God into their life and to have the ability to discuss and share their faith with all.
PASTORAL We are joined together in our faith by the Holy Spirit. As a loving fellowship we wish to deepen and extend our care for each other encouraging everyone to use their gifts, as they are enabled by God, to show tenderness and compassion in a spirit of humility.
MISSION/SOCIETY We accept that we are called to make Christ known in our community at Bamford and in all other places. We would wish to influence others by example and comment, accepting that God will speak through us as we maintain a relationship with Him. We recognise the need for the Church to participate in all aspects of the life of the world, and proclaim God’s will, as it is revealed to us.

Message from the Manse “Seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary” As we continue with our themed services in the year of Seeking God’s Vision for the Church we begin a new series in April. It is following the post-Easter Lectionary Readings under the heading of Seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary. The services will follow passages that chart the spread of the Gospel from Jerusalem following the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the morning services we will explore passages from Acts and in the evening service from the Gospel of John. I want to encourage us in these months to be people of prayer; people seeking God’s Vision for us as the church. Friends I cannot stress 2
enough the need for us to be listening to God and seeking where He is leading us. Sometimes we can be so busy and programme driven that we miss the still small voice of God. The last thing I want us to do as a Church is to miss God’s prompting; to miss what He is saying to us as His people, His Church. I want to draw your attention specifically to the Ignite Day that is taking place here at Bamford Chapel on the 13th April (see more detail in this magazine) It is a day that is open to other URC churches in the area and in the wider Synod. Will more people come that from Bamford Chapel? Who knows - But I want to ask you to give serious consideration to coming to this event. It will be an opportunity to hear more about the person and work of the Holy Spirit. For the Holy Spirit is a vital person of the Trinity. I know we have heard a lot about Seeking God’s Vision and some of you may be thinking: “What on earth is he going on about and why aren’t we seeing much in the way of what this vision is?” In one way the answer to the question of what God’s vision is - is simple: It is to grow into mature followers of Jesus and to make Jesus known to others. In other words: To grow the Church and the Kingdom in the name of Christ through the empowering of the Holy Spirit. If the first question is “what is God’s vision?” the second has to be “how do we implement God’s vision?” I want to stress that the important issue is that it is not my vision as the minister; or the vision of the Elders. It is God’s vision for God’s church. In the coming months we will be exploring some themes of stewardship as part of seeking God’s vision. You may be asked for your input in preparation for and as a part of that process. I hope and pray we will all engage in that process so that together we will be one in longing for, and working towards, the growth of the church as we proclaim the Good news of Jesus Christ and deepen our faith and trust in him. Your servant in Christ, Richard. 3
News of the family Concerns are expressed for Ray and Auriel Atkins and the wider family, Alistair Linden and family, Joan Warner and her sister Sylvia Preston, Muriel and Ian Sturrock, Eric Bradbury and Don and Wyn Schofield. Sid Hazlehurst has had a spell in hospital and is now recovering at home, Joy Carter, one of our Luncheon Club members has had an eye problem recently. Pat Gate and Diane Davies are both recovering in hospital following surgery. We pray also for Peter and Dot Craig form Norden URC as Peter is seriously ill. Margaret Ogden recently conducted a memorial service for Lydia Wright`s daughter, Anne, and also the funeral service for Lily Grundy, who died aged one hundred and six years. Our thoughts are with Lydia and with Lily`s family at this sad time. We pray for Margaret Riley and her family as they mourn Margaret`s husband Fred, who died peacefully in the Hospice this week. Margaret and Fred attended St Vincent`s Church, but Margaret is a loyal committee member of our Ladies Fellowship at Bamford Chapel. Ruth Watson now has a date for her Ordination at Worsley Road and Patricroft pastorate. It will be on Saturday 7 th September at 2pm. This will give her time to complete her dissertation by mid August. Members of the Bible Study group look forward to reading the completed dissertation as Ruth has used some sessions to provide material for her studies! Pray also for the visit of the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir, in May. Offers of beds for the choir members are trickling in very slowly. Please think about having one or more of the young people on the weekend of 24th/25th May. If you are unable to host students, 4
please put the date of the concert, 25 th May in your diaries and come and support this event.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all our friends at Bamford Chapel for their concerns while we have both been 'under the weather'. Sheila has recovered from her fall and thanks once again to Linda Peacock for her help and first aid. Sheila and Gordon James.
Thank you for the love and support that was given to me during my illness and operation, also the many cards received and the wonderful flower arrangement. God Bless Blanche Swann

Ladies’ Fellowship For our February meeting, the Ladies’ Fellowship invited Addie and Barbara Redmond to speak to us about their involvement with Street Pastors. The first Street Pastors started in Brixton in 2003. the first Street Pastors team in Manchester was 2007. By the year 2012 there were 9,000 Street Pastors in 250 teams across the UK. 165 Street Pastors in 11 teams in Greater Manchester. Barbara and Addie first heard about Street Pastors at the Window on the World Conference, and felt God’s call in August 2009. In December 2009 they applied to become Street pastors and one year on they started training. In March 2010 they joined the Harpurhey community team. This interested me very much as I was born in Harpurhey. In June 2011, they moved to the Bury Town Centre team and graduated as fully trained pastors in October 2011, and this is where they remain doing their good work. They are out late at night for about 3 hours, whenever and are constantly helping where ever they are needed. Joan Warner is on call in case Barbara and Addie want some prayers said for someone in need. In March 2013 Rochdale will start a team in Kirkholt. The community team will be on duty from 7pm to midnight. The town centre team will be on duty 10pm to 3am. Barbara and Addie have taken several people from Bamford Chapel out with them and this seems to be very successful. 6
If I was a bit younger and fitter I would enjoy a night out with them. They have had quite a few successful accounts with some of the people they have become involved with. Everyone who was present at the meeting was very impressed at what Barbara and Addie were doing and we took a collection for them which raised £45. This was on top of the donation we gave from Ladies’ Fellowship. Carol Hartley also donated £50. Thank you very much Barbara and Addie for giving up your time to speak to us and for the wonderful work you do. Carry on and may God bless you both and the people whose lives you have helped. God Bless Margaret Entwistle

MESSY CHURCH May I say a personal thank you to the wonderful team who worked extremely hard on Sunday 3rd March creating MESSY CHURCH. The whole organisation was fantastic. So many people there giving so much pleasure to young and old. Raising more awareness of the need for fairly traded goods to be bought and sold in our world. THANK YOU from Grandma Lesley Sutton [and Grandad Peter Sutton] 8
Fairtrade Messy Church Sunday 3rd March 2013 2.30 – 5.00 pm Parents/grandparents with young children came to chapel in the middle of Fair Trade Fortnight to take part in craft activities, worship and food on the theme of Fair Trade. Bees wings and flowers were made so that children could join in the sketch in the worship part of the afternoon. Hands and feet were very much in evidence with family groups making prints of their hands and feet and hand- and feet-shaped biscuits were decorated (and immediately consumed!). These related to the “Taking a Step for Fair Trade” campaign. Fair trade carrier bags were decorated and were very useful for carrying the products of all the other activities. Decorated small clay pots were made to carry fair trade chocolate eggs and a collage of fair trade product labels was made on an arrow pointing the way to a more just world. These and other activities were tackled with great enthusiasm. In a short act of worship we sang new trade justice words to Frere Jacques and John Brown’s Body, through a sketch involving the bees and flowers and a short address, we learnt about how fair trade helps to remove the injustices experienced by many developing world producers of honey and other goods. The 80 participants sat down together to enjoy a meal of bolognaise with fair trade pasta followed by fair trade cakes and biscuits. Finally it only remains to thank all those who helped with the activities, worship and food and to apologise to those on the cleaning rota for the following week. We did our best to clean up the glitter, but it does get everywhere!

Watch Les Miserables to learn of God's grace and redemption, says priest Watching the film Les Miserables is an ideal way to learn of God's grace, redemption and mercy, says the priest-in-charge of St Mary the Virgin, Ewelme, in Oxfordshire, where one of the film's most important scenes was filmed. The Revd Jonathan Meyer recalls: "It was almost a year ago that I was approached and asked about filming part of Les Miserables in the church at Ewelme. Filming took place on 21st March, when the south porch was transformed into the residence of the Bishop of Digne. The convict Jean Valjean emerges from the door, singing the words 'and now let the story begin'. “We saw this on a crisp March day, repeated over and over again with numerous cameras, film crews, lights, gantries and a churchyard full of sound technicians. On screen we saw the contorted face of Valjean rushing forward, and the camera showing us our church digitised on to a promontory in Provence. "Most important to me was that this is the nub of the film. The Bishop's act of kindness, like the grace of God, is poured out in such a way that Valjean's life is transformed and transforms others.

When you carry the Bible, Satan gets a headache..... When you open it, he collapses..... When he sees you reading it, he faints...... When he sees that you are living what you read, he flees There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and announced to his congregation: "I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building programme. The bad news is, it's still in your pockets." There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country. "Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk. "Only the Ten Commandments." answered the lady.
A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!" "Okay," said his father. "What does the Bible mean?" The young boy replied excitedly," It stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.'

Christian Aid Week May 12th - 18th Christian Aid Week will be upon us once again before we know where we are. So once again I am asking for volunteer collectors. We are blessed by the number of people who volunteer year by year but we are always happy to recruit new people. The task involves delivering the envelopes at the beginning of the week and returning to collect them later, sometimes more than once when people are not at home. That way we maximise the amount that we collect. I am sure you will have seen the banner that we have outside Church which is the logo for Christian Aid’s campaign for 2013. It says…..
Hunger is the world's most shocking problem and our toughest challenge. One in eight people on this planet lives with the pain of hunger. And yet our planet provides enough food for everyone. It's unfair, it's unjust, and - it's totally preventable. We can push world leaders to end this injustice by tackling four big IFs .
1.Tax
IF we stop big companies dodging taxes
in poor countries, so that millions of people can free themselves from hunger……..Too many unscrupulous businesses and individuals manage to avoid paying the taxes they owe in developing countries. They're dodging millions of pounds every day That money could help millions of people to escape from hunger. We can help stop this tax dodging if our government steps up to close the international tax loopholes
2. Aid
IF we make the right investments to stop
people dying from hunger, and help the poorest people 12
feed themselves…….. The UK government has committed to spending 0.7% of its national income on aid. We must make sure they keep this promise.
3. Land IF we stop poor farmers being forced off their land, and use crops to feed people, not fuel cars………..The poorest farmers are losing their land to giant corporations. These companies don’t care that the land is already being used by local people to grow food. Stopping them would help millions of people get enough to eat.
4. Transparency
IF we force governments and big corporations to be honest and open about their actions that stop people getting enough food……….Transparency and accountability are vital in the global food system. Decisions that can affect millions of people are made behind closed doors, without the participation of those affected. Corporates and governments must be more transparent about their affairs so that citizens can hold to account powerful players in the food system. These are big IFs, but if we press our leaders to make these happen, and IF they do, there really will be enough food for everyone. With the UK hosting the annual G8 summit meeting (a meeting for the government leaders of eight of the world’s most powerful economies), 2013 represents an historic opportunity in the fight to end world hunger. It is a crucial time to get the message to world leaders that strong action must be taken to address the structural causes of poverty and hunger. We will have some action cards to send to our MPs during Christian Aid week, please help to fight this campaign. Christian Aid believes in the power of prayer and action. Do you? Margaret Ogden 13
Rochdale Food Bank First can I say a big thank you to the many people who have donated food and money to the Foodbank over the last few months. . Every week when I go on a Thursday, I am able to take five or six carrier bags full of cans, packets etc donated by the generous members of Bamford Chapel. Currently we are giving out more food than we are getting in, so our contributions are vital if this service is to continue. There are certain things that we seem to run short of week by week, so I thought I would make a special plea for any of the following:-
Milk
Rice
Sugar
Cereals
Fruit Juice
Jam
Cook in sauces - packets or jars
Custard
Sponge Puddings
Tinned Fruit
Of course we do appreciate anything you can give but we do have plenty of beans, tomatoes and soup at the moment. I am delighted to say that we have a second volunteer from Bamford Chapel. Ann Newman has recently started and I know she will be a great asset to the organisation. Please pray for the work of the Foodbank and for all those who find it necessary to come and ask for food. Some of their stories are heart rending. It just makes me realise how much I have to be thankful for. We still need new premises after the end of March so your prayers for an imminent solution would be valued. Margaret Ogden 14
An opportunity to come together with others from across the Rochdale URCs. It is an event that will be led by Revd Carole Marsden from Cumbria. Carole has experience of leading choirs and I am sure will lead a fun and worshipful event. Tickets are available from Richard Bradley and a sign up sheet is on the notice board. If you plan to attend this event please sign the sheet and then we know an approximate number from Bamford Chapel who will attend. Thanks and God Bless, Richard. 15
Regardless of where you sit, stand, or wrestle with the issue of women in church leadership, this satirical list is worth sharing for both laughter and even reflection because that’s what good satire forces us to do. Discovered and shared with us by Joanne Shaw.
10 reasons Why Men Should Not Be Ordained For Ministry. 10. A man’s place is in the army. 9.
The pastoral duties of men who have children might distract them from the responsibility of being a parent.
8.
The physique of men indicates that they are more suited to such tasks as chopping down trees and wrestling mountain lions. It would be “unnatural” for them to do ministerial tasks.
7.
Man was created before woman, obviously as a prototype. Thus, they represent an experiment rather than the crowning achievement of creation.
6.
Men are too emotional to be priests or pastors. Their conduct at football and basketball games demonstrates this.
5.
Some men are handsome, and this will distract women worshipers.
4.
Pastors need to nurture their congregations. But this is not a traditional male role. Throughout history, women have been recognized as not only more skilled than men at nurturing, but also more fervently attracted to it. This makes them the obvious choice for ordination.
3.
Men are prone to violence. No really masculine man wants to 16
settle disputes except by fighting about them. Thus they would be poor role models as well as dangerously unstable in positions of leadership. 2.
The New Testament tells us that Jesus was betrayed by a man. His lack of faith and ensuing punishment remind us of the subordinated position that all men should take.
1.
Men can still be involved in church activities, even without being ordained. They can sweep sidewalks, repair the church roof, and perhaps even lead the song service on Father’s Day. By confining themselves to such traditional male roles, they can still be vitally important in the life of the church.
Someone once said: “If you are going to soar with the eagles in the morning, you can’t hoot with the owls all night.”
Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognise a mistake when you make it again.
Coincidences happen when God chooses to remain anonymous.
When God ordains, He sustains.
We don't change God's message - His message changes us.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 25th February to 10th March 2013 1]
On Sunday 24th February Fairtrade Fortnight at Bamford Chapel was launched during the morning service. The children’s address was given by Addie Redmond who talked about choices. We can choose whether to buy fairly traded goods or not. The reasons for choosing fairly traded are clear.
Why Fairtrade? Fairtrade sets out to: * create opportunities for poor producers * ensure trading practices are fair, both in terms of payment & prices * ensure that children are not being exploited * ensure there is no discrimination * ensure that working conditions are safe During this service a number of junior church members entertained the congregation with a special fair trade dance [too energetic for some of us]. After the service fairly traded ground coffee and tea were served as well as scones made with fairly traded sugar and fruit accompanied by tastings of fairly traded jams and confectionary. On display were the usual fairly traded goods with the addition of craft goods. The stock is purchased 18
from whose mission is to fight poverty through trade, practising and promoting approaches to trade that help poor people in developing countries transform their lives. 2]
The second Fairtrade Fortnight activity at Bamford Chapel was “MESSY CHURCH” on Sunday 3rd March from 2.30pm to 5.00pm. Seventy-five people enjoyed craft, music, food, fellowship and fun. All ages came along. A short service of thanksgiving for Fairtrade was conducted by Margaret Ogden.

Ignite GEAR Event Saturday 13th April 10am-3pm. I realise that the Holy Spirit can be somewhat daunting for some. Please give prayerful consideration to coming to this event on Saturday 13th April from 10am – 3pm. Revd Andrew Willets will be leading this event and I am sure it will be led with great sensitivity. The Holy Spirit is a vital person of the Trinity. As we move through this year of Seeking God’s Vision then I am sure this event will help us enormously both individually and collectively as a church. Please see the flyer or the posters on the notice boards in Church. Thanks and God Bless, Richard.

Ignite provides opportunities for congregations to catch the Spirit’s flame and grow in faithfulness to Jesus Christ.

From a prayer of St Patrick
May Christ shield me today. Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit, Christ when I stand...
Can't sleep? Try counting your blessings.
Some minds are like concrete - all mixed up and permanently set.
Don't wait for the hearse to take you to church!
Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary.
Never give the devil a ride. He will always want to drive.
Don't put a question mark where God puts a full stop.

Memo From God Effective immediately, please be aware that there are changes YOU need to make in YOUR life. These changes need to be completed in order that I may fulfil my promises to you to grant you peace, joy and happiness in this life. 1. Quit Worrying Life has dealt you a blow and all you do is sit and worry. Have you forgotten that I am here to take all your burdens and carry them for you? Or do you just enjoy fretting over every little thing that comes your way? 2. Put it on the List Something needs done or taken care of. Put it on the list. No, not YOUR list. Put it on MY to-do-list. Let ME be the one to take care of the problem. I can't help you until you turn it over to Me. And although My to-do-list is long, I am after all... God. I can take care of anything you put into My hands. In fact, if the truth were ever really known, I take care of a lot of things for you that you never even realize. 3. Trust Me Once you've given your burdens to Me, quit trying to take them back. Trust in Me. Have the faith that I will take care of all your needs, your problems and your trials. Problems with the kids? Put them on My list. Problem with finances? Put it on My list. Problems with your emotional roller coaster? For My sake, put it on My list. I want to help you. All you have to do is ask. 4. Leave It Alone Don't wake up one morning and say, "Well, I'm feeling much stronger now, I think I can handle it from here." Why do you think you are feeling stronger now? It's simple. You gave Me your burdens and I'm taking care of them. I also renew your strength and cover you in my peace. Don't you know that if I give you these problems back, you will be right back where you started? Leave them with Me and forget about them. Just let Me do my job. 5. Talk to Me I want you to forget a lot of things. Forget what was making you crazy. Forget the worry and the fretting because you know I'm in control. But there's one thing I pray you never forget. Please, don't forget to talk to Me - OFTEN! I love YOU! I want to hear your voice. I want you to include Me in on the things going on in your life. I want to hear you talk about your friends and family. Prayer is simply you having a conversation with 24
Me. I want to be your dearest friend. 6. Have Faith I see a lot of things from up here that you can't see from where you are. Have faith in Me that I know what I'm doing. Trust Me; you wouldn't want the view from My eyes. I will continue to care for you, watch over you, and meet your needs. You only have to trust Me. Although I have a much bigger task than you, it seems as if you have so much trouble just doing your simple part. How hard can trust be? 7. Share You were taught to share when you were only two years old. When did you forget? That rule still applies. Share with those who are less fortunate than you. Share your joy with those who need encouragement. Share your laughter with those who haven't heard any in such a long time. Share your tears with those who have forgotten how to cry. Share your faith with those who have none. 8. Be Patient I managed to fix it so in just one lifetime you could have so many diverse experiences. You grow from a child to an adult, have children, change jobs many times, learn many trades, travel to so many places, meet thousands of people, and experience so much. How can you be so impatient then when it takes Me a little longer than you expect to handle something on My to-do-list? Trust in My timing, for My timing is perfect. Just because I created the entire universe in only six days, everyone thinks I should always rush, rush, rush. 9. Be Kind Be kind to others, for I love them just as much as I love you. They may not dress like you, or talk like you, or live the same way you do, but I still love you all. Please try to get along, for My sake. I created each of you different in some way. It would be too boring if you were all identical. Please, know I love each of your differences. 10. Love Yourself As much as I love you, how can you not love yourself? You were created by me for one reason only -- to be loved, and to love in return. I am a God of Love. Love Me. Love your neighbours. But also love yourself. It makes My heart ache when I see you so angry with yourself when things go wrong. You are very precious to me. Don't ever forget that! With all my heart I love you, GOD 25

A Prayer for Easter-tide, by Daphne Kitching Dear Father, Life can be difficult. Sometimes it feels as though the sun has stopped shining, just as it did on that first Good Friday. Sometimes it can feel as though we are stuck in the darkness and it seems impossible that the light will ever shine again. And yet the reality is that Friday did move on, into the most glorious Sunday. The Son did rise - and his light shines on, transforming the darkest of times, holding out hope and peace and life to all who will turn and look into his face. He is alive. He will help us. Thank you Father, for Jesus. Amen.
