at s etter t an o ers and friends If you’re looking for a way to embrace the beautiful spring weather and bring some happy into your home, check out this fun workshop a few of the local Garden Club gals brought us along for. You’ll love their crafty tips and expert advice on arranging flowers like a pro! Tip #1: Take inspiration from others. Everyone needs a little bit of inspiration. When you begin your journey to flower arranging, it will be helpful to look at photos for inspiration from friends or from sites like Pinterest. Not only will the photos help spark a unique color scheme idea or provide a use for a gorgeous seasonal bloom, but it will also give you a starting point for your arrangement. “When you first start out with arranging, you look at other people’s pictures for inspiration,” Master Gardener Martha Ann Ronsonet explains. “Then, once you have some experience, you still find yourself looking at others’ work to pull inspiration!”

Tip #2: Utilize what you have. Floral arrangements do not have to break the bank! While it is helpful to use flower frogs to stabilize your floral pieces, there are other options that can work. JoAnn Torrans shares a simple way to create a grid to hold flowers in place using clear tape on top of a glass jar. Simply place a few strips of tape spaced apart and in the same direction across the opening of the vase, then place a few strips of tape perpendicularly across the opening. The result offers a grid to form your arrangement without the need for a frog. This will add stability and shape to your arrangement with minimal tools and effort. Tip #3: Strike while the iron is hot. Working with flowers is an art form, and the ladies share that you have to be in the mood to create. If you are not feeling very inspired, try not to force it. Strike while the iron is hot and when creativity flows! “Beautiful flowers inspire my creativity,” Tina Roberts shares. “It gives me a sense of accomplishment and provides me with joy knowing my creation is going to bring happiness to others.”
Tip #4: Get crafty. Once you have picked out your favorite floral pairings, you will want to find the perfect vase or item to display them in. Perhaps you have a beautiful gold vase that is perfect for displaying tall sprigs of greenery, or maybe you love the look of layered flowers and greens in a wicker basket. JoAnn shares her best kept secret for creating a base to display her creations, made completely

from items you can pick up at the dollar store. She found an array of mason jars, clear round bowls, and other pretty glassware and paired each item with a glass candlestick holder. After choosing her perfect pairings, she superglued the pieces together to create a lasting bond. Whether you are just starting out with arranging or you are looking to switch up your options, take inspiration from this crafty idea and create your own!
How to preserve your floral arrangement We all know the struggle of creating a gorgeous arrangement just for it to wilt in a few days—or even hours—later. Luckily, the ladies at the Garden Club have a few tips for prolonging the life of their floral arrangements and share them with us here: Condition your flowers: Ensure your arrangement is full with fresh water. Different types of flowers may require varying amounts of water, and each benefit from a floral treatment of some sort to prolong the life of the arrangement.
Tip #5: Don’t be afraid to experiment. There are no rules when it comes to floral arranging, so have fun with the process! Experiment with color palettes you love, add in filler pieces of greenery to your pieces, and change up the way you cut your flowers. In the process of experimenting, you will gain so much knowledge and learn what you like and dislike. Finding your personal style may take some time, but the journey will be so much fun!
Choose young flowers: Most flowers will continue to mature after they have been cut, giving you a longer shelf life for your arrangement. Roses, for example, should have their first surrounding petals beginning to loosen and open when picked for a bouquet. Always use clean tools and sharp clippers: Ensure your containers have been properly washed in between arrangements to avoid contamination. Utilizing sharp clippers or scissors can offer a cleaner cut, making it easier for the stems of the flowers to retain moisture and nutrients. Cutting stems at a 45-degree angle also contributes to this. Family Magazine thanks Diane Feagle, Tina Roberts, Martha Ann Ronsonet, Carol Stevens, and JoAnn Torrans for hosting this floral workshop to celebrate spring! Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks with us, and for breathing life into these stunning arrangements!

President Thomas Jefferson once said, “I cannot live without books.” This sentiment is shared by most educators when it comes to reading—not only out of necessity, but for the simple joys, for curiosity, for knowledge, and for pleasure. authors and books to read and teach is Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five. The book is a science fiction-infused anti-war novel about the World War II experiences and journeys through time of Billy Pilgrim. Valarie Tilton, Columbia High School Instructional Coach Valarie Tilton’s job encompasses many aspects of planning and assisting classroom teachers and school leaders with evidence-based practices to help enhance students’ reading skills. Tilton says one of her most inspiring books is The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. “This book means so much to me personally and professionally. It was one of the first class novels that I read as a classroom teacher at Columbia High School. By the time we finished the book, my students understood the importance and power of human connections. Many of them said it was their favorite book.” She said the message is clear, as many of us who have lost loved ones understand. “I lost my father several years before… but one day we will see them again.”

Keeping himself engrossed in good reads, Palmer is currently reading The Leader in Me: How Schools around the World are Inspiring Greatness, One Child at a Time by Stephen R. Covey. Palmer says this is an inspiring read designed to encourage primary through secondary practitioners. “This read is helping me to recognize the leadership abilities of our students, and then incorporate them into the big school mission and culture,” Palmer says. “It has been an interesting read. In fact, I was so challenged by the principles that I have begun Glenn Palmer implementing elements into my classroom activities throughout this year.” Additionally, he names three authors at the top of his reading list: Peter Block (Stewardship: Choosing Service over SelfInterest), Garcia Burnham (In the Presence of Interest My Enemies), and John Kotter (Our Iceberg is Melting). Regarding reading, Palmer’s background and interests are diverse from all genres, personally and professionally.

“I love Vonnegut’s droll sarcasm as he writes about a pathetic protagonist, who passively deals with WWII, middle-age, and alien abduction,” Braley expresses. This nontraditional novel poignantly exposes both the beauty and frailty of the human experience, and is one that he picks up, periodically, finding new discoveries each time. If he had to recommend books to read, his must-reads would be Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man and Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. Marsha Bridgeman, English Instructor at Columbia High School One connection Marsha Bridgeman has with Zora Neale Hurston is her authenticity, explaining how she loves to read anything from Hurston’s writings. Considered to be a genius and influential author, novelist, folklorist and anthropologist, Hurston crosses over and connects with the human spirit with her writings. “In the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, one essay “How it Feels to Be Colored Me Me,”,” or excerpts such as “Why Women Always Take Advantage of Men,” a humorous account from her work, Mules and Men, Zora’s chronicle is rife with humor and candor, as well as sorrow and triumph. She speaks to the universal human condition and reveals a thorough understanding and unique perspective of being human, both individually and collectively.” Bridgeman says since Hurston was a student of anthropology, her work is “peppered with Southern dialect and cultural poignancy. Gifted in syntax and diction, Hurston’s Marsha Bridgeman work is fully alive with prolific and profound imagery and symbolism. Her work is accessible to the everyday reader who is looking for enjoyment and enlightenment.” And that’s what the reader will find!‘

the beginner’s guide to creating a
Capsule wardrobe by Jeweliana Register
Minimalism is sweeping the nation, and with minimalist gurus buzzing about the benefits of the lifestyle and Marie Kondo’s newest Netflix series, we can’t help but jump on the downsizing bandwagon. One of the easiest ways to incorporate a new minimalist approach into your day-to-day is by creating a capsule wardrobe stocked full of your favorite items. A blogger favorite, the capsule wardrobe challenges us to create outfits with existing pieces in our collection by mixing and matching our core pieces with a few fun accessories and trendy clothing items. Whether you are looking to dive into a ten-piece wardrobe year-round or just looking to reinvent some items in your collection, check out our beginner’s guide to creating a capsule wardrobe.
STEP #1: DE-CLUTTER YOUR CLOSET
While this may seem daunting for most of us, clearing out the closet is the first step to creating your dream wardrobe. Start by eliminating any items that have visible wear and tear beyond repair, or any pieces that have stains or discoloration. Then, sort through your clothing using the lens of practicality. Does that item serve a purpose in your wardrobe? Does it fit your lifestyle and your personal style? If not, consider donating or selling the items that no longer fit your needs.
STEP #5: ADD IN YOUR TRENDY AND FUN ACCESSORIES
What’s a wardrobe without a little fun? Adding in trendy jewelry and beautiful handbags can really help elevate your outfit. If you are feeling bored with your basic tee and jeans look, consider popping on a leather jacket and stacking on sparkly bracelets. This is also the step in the process where you should incorporate trendy tops with fun details, like big bell sleeves or scalloped hems. Consider investing in statement pieces and dainty pieces that reflect your personal style, while still being able to mix well together. The possibilities are endless, and these items will really spice up your looks. Capsule wardrobes are meant to simplify your life and assist you in the daily struggle of getting ready in the morning. By having pieces that mix well together and form no-fail combinations, you will finally be free from feeling like you have a full closet but nothing to wear. So, find the magic number of clothing that works for you and simplify your mornings starting today!
STEP #2: CONSIDER YOUR COLOR PALETTE
This step may look different for each person. While most people opt for a neutral color palette with the occasional pop of color, maybe you prefer to wear mostly bright colors. If so, build a palette you love from your favorite choices. A typical color palette may include white, black, gray, blush, red and denim. Find a color palette that draws your eye and consider only utilizing items in that color scheme.
STEP #3: CHOOSE YOUR TEXTURES AND FABRICS
Mixing and matching can be made simple when you are dealing with specific fabrics and textures. To avoid feeling like you have a boring array of clothing in your capsule wardrobe, try finding fabrics you love to wear and love to mix. Some fabric choices to consider are cotton, leather, wool, jersey, velvet, linen and satin.
STEP #4: SELECT YOUR STAPLE PIECES
When it comes to selecting your staple items, consider the fit and the quality of the pieces you are collecting. Your favorite lived-in denim is worth the investment, and when taken care of properly, can stay in your collection for a while. Other items to consider including are basic tanks and tees, the perfect little black dress, crisp button-downs, fitted blazers, pencil skirts, work trousers and comfortable cardigans. 12 |

THE ROAD TO NASHVILLE They say the journey is almost as good as the destination, and that is certainly true when it comes to this girls’ getaway. The trio made plans to be on the road before the sun rose so they could make the most of their time in the city, and that meant a few coffee stops were necessary on the road. Caffeinated and full of excitement for the weekend ahead, the car ride was full of laughter or girl talk until they reached their lunch spot:
Public House Restaurant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Located in Warehouse Row, this popular dining option served up Southern-style fixings, complete with creamy mac-and-cheese and crispy fried chicken. A few strolls around the shopping center later, the girls were back on the road, refueled from lunch and excited to be in Nashville in about two hours.

BREWS AT JACKALOPE BREWING COMPANY
The Flipside was dreamed up by Jason and Libby Sheer, along with their business partner Tim Gibbons (pictured).
DINNER AT THE FLIPSIDE
The trip to Nashville would not be complete without a visit to a local brewery, and the girls opted to try the beers at Jackalope Brewing Company. Located in an industrial-pubstyle building, Jackalope has been serving their favorite brews since 2011. With options like the “Bearwalker,” a roasty, maple brown ale, and the “Thunder Ann,” a citrusinfused, tropical pale ale, this hometown brewery has something for everyone. Between the cool industrial building design and the modern seating choices, this brewery is the perfect place to stop and chill out before experiencing the nightlife that Nashville has to offer.
After checking in at their Airbnb, the girls headed to The Flipside, a retro joint that serves creative chicken recipes in Nashville’s 12 South neighborhood. The restaurant is known for their Bloody Marys and “Jack’s Best Chicken,” a dish inspired by one of the owners’ sons. When he was growing up, he would always request to eat his “best chicken,” or his favorite chicken, each night for dinner. His siblings had grown tired of eating the same meal each night, so his family decided to get creative with different toppings on the chicken dish. Thus, when The Flipside was born, the owners added “Jack’s Best Chicken” to the menu with over 20 different topping options. Some of those include the “Elvis Lives,” a peanut butter, banana, honey, and bacon option; the “Brunch,” a fried egg, bacon and cheddar option; and the “Mac Daddy,” a chili and mac-and-cheese option. Between the old-school EXPLORING HOUSTON STREET diner look and the hometown feel, The Flipside was an unforgettable Nashville experience.
Unique bars and prohibitionstyle speakeasies abound in the area surrounding Jackalope’s “The Ranch” location. The group explored Jackalope’s “The Ranch” the area and wandered into cool spaces full of character and unique designs. Nashville is bursting with creative spaces for artists and creators to hang out, whether it is to be inspired or to unwind. When in Nashville, explore spots beyond just the tourist areas and immerse yourself in the culture of the city.

DESSERT AT JENI’S SPLENDID ICE CREAMS
Curb your sweet tooth with an order of their famous bonuts or fluffy hummingbird family reserve, or check out their rendition of biscuits and gravy. Another favorite is the “East Nasty,” a buttermilk biscuit, fried chicken, aged cheddar, and sausage gravy. No matter what dish you choose, this brunch is sure to hit the spot and prepare you for a day of exploring.
COFFEE AT THE FROTHY MONKEY
A Tennessee staple, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is known to have a line out the door at their Nashville locations. This sweet treat was created in 2002 by Jeni Britton Bauer, a woman with a passion for art and creating delicious treats with good-for-you ingredients. The girls opted to try flavors like darkest chocolate and brown butter almond brittle, but lavender and frozen rose also frequent the menu. The smell of buttery waffle cones hits your nostrils the minute you step into the shop, and the sweet fragrance of the ingredients add to the experience. Not making a trip to Nashville anytime soon? Don’t worry—you can experience the tasty treat in pints from your local grocer.
BREAKFAST AT BISCUIT LOVE Nestled in the Nashville neighborhood The Gulch, this brunch spot is a mustdo. While there is almost always a line to get in, the wait is well worth it and the line moves fairly fast. This popular breakfast stop serves up Southern-style breakfast with a focus on fluffy, delicious biscuits (of course!). Be sure to grab an order of the “bonuts,” a delicacy made of fried biscuit dough tossed in sugar, topped with lemon mascarpone, and served with a blueberry compote.
In a city where great coffee shops are plentiful, The Frothy Monkey was a recommendation by a local. This hip storefront offers fresh baked goods and delicious sandwiches, along with signature coffee beverages and specialty cocktails. Stop in for a quick coffee break or to unwind from a long day of sightseeing with a cocktail.
LUNCH AT EDLEY’S BAR-B-QUE After a long afternoon of shopping, the trio chose to indulge in some traditional Tennessee barbeque. Voted the best BBQ in Nashville, the joint is known for its great sweet tea and delicious smoked meats. The girls shared a basket of BBQ nachos and cheesy mac-and-cheese, and of course ordered a round of Southern sweet tea.
NIGHTLIFE ON BROADWAY STREET Girls just wanna have fun! What’s a girls’ weekend without a night on the town? Equipped with Blake’s fabulous hair and makeup skills and their dancing shoes, the girls headed to Broadway Street to listen to live music in Honky Tonk nation and Whiskey Row. The girls wandered into the Nashville Underground venue for dinner and drinks, listening to live music from the cover band performing that night. After dinner, the crew popped in a few other bars to experience the nightlife and listen to the sounds of the city. “Nashville had so much to offer! Delicious Southern comfort food, rocking country music, whimsical shops, and sweet treats… But the best part was experiencing all of it with my friends,” Emily Clark expresses. “We all have different likes, dislikes, and personalities, but Nashville had something for us all to enjoy.” While the trip was a quick one, Chani, Blake, and Emily express how much fun they packed into their few days in Music City. Their journey through Nashville was spent exploring and tasting their way through the city—but you can’t live a full life on an empty stomach, right?

A VIRTUAL TOUR OF MUSIC CITY While in Nashville, the trio decided to participate in a virtual walking tour and scavenger hunt to many of the local landmarks. Beginning at the County Music Hall, this tour brings you past the iconic Music City Walk of Fame and the Schermerhorn Symphony. Take a walk through the Goo Goo Candy Shop’s storefront to try their famous clusters and visit a classic record shop. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as Nashville is a walking city, and there is so much to see! “Nashville is just perfect! My favorite part about the trip (aside from spending time with my girls and enjoying the s’mores!) is how the city continues to honor its historical roots while at the same time growing vibrantly outside of the Music City title into a young, energetic and masterfully designed metropolis,” Chani Morris explains. “Nashville welcomed us with true Southern charm, and I can’t wait to go back again someday.”
SHOPPING IN 12 SOUTH One of Nashville’s up-and-coming popular areas, this neighborhood is chocked full of local shops and eateries. Chani, Blake, and Emily had a blast walking through the streets of 12 South and wandering into interesting shops. Take a stroll through White’s Mercantile and Serendipity and be sure to check out Reese Witherspoon’s storefront, Draper James, where the staff greets you with Southern hospitality and complimentary sweet tea. Grab a photo at the iconic “I Believe in Nashville” sign and search for the other murals sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. The girls found their way to an adorable retro pop-up camper selling specialty s’mores and couldn’t resist stopping for a treat before continuing on to a late lunch. “My favorite part of the trip was the 12 South neighborhood. The unique pop-up vendors like S’more Love was a nice surprise in addition to all of the ‘hipster’ stores and shops like Reese Witherspoon’s boutique,” Blake Chapman says. “The 12 South area had such a variety of sights to enjoy at different price ranges, plus lots of great group photo spots that will make your Facebook friends envy your most recent adventure.”

Total Time 80 Minutes - Servings 18
• Whole cloves • 1/2 cup spicy brown mustard • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
Directions: Preheat oven to 325 F. Score the surface of the ham in a diamond pattern about 1/8-inch deep. Insert cloves in the middle of each diamond. Place ham in a large roasting pan with a rack, tent it with foil, and bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours—or longer, depending on the package directions. (Some hams may require 3 to 3 1/2 hours at a lower temp; just check the package.) Heat the brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, and soda in a small saucepan until bubbly. Simmer to reduce until thicker, about 15 minutes. After about 2 hours of baking time, remove the foil and brush the glaze on the ham in 20-minute intervals (put the ham back in the oven, uncovered, in between) until it’s nice and glossy. Remove from the oven and allow to rest 15 to 20 minutes before carving.
LEMON-LIME SPRING THING National Post
For the filling: • 3 cups raw cashews • Zest from 1 lime • Zest from 1 lemon • 1/3 cup lime juice • 2/3 cup lemon juice • 3/4 cup maple syrup • 1 tablespoon vanilla • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
Total Time 40 Minutes - Servings 6 For the crust: • 1 1/2 cups almonds • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons coconut (shredded, unsweetened) • 1/4 cup dates, (pitted, moist) • 1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions: Bring a kettle of water to a boil; after it boils let it cool for 2 minutes. Add cashews to a heatproof bowl, cover by at least 1 inch (3 cm) with hot water. Allow cashews to soak at least 30 minutes. To make crust: In a food processor, process almonds with salt until a fine flour forms. Add shredded coconut, dates and vanilla, process until mixture starts to stick together. Press evenly into the bottom of an 8-inch (20-cm) springform pan. (Tip: Flip the bottom of the pan upside down in the springform ring before adding crust to make it easier to remove dessert later.) Refrigerate while making the filling. To make filling: Drain cashews and add to a blender along with lemon and lime zests, juices, maple syrup, vanilla and salt; blend until smooth. Add melted coconut oil and blend again. Pour mixture over crust. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving, or freeze, then allow to thaw in fridge, before serving. Garnish with citrus slices or fresh berries if desired. t n i l C s r e m m u S TEAM ROPER
It all started with a dream
A champion team roper and accomplished rodeo cowboy, Clint Summers is living his rodeo dreams each and every day. The passion for rodeo is one that runs in the family, with Clint’s family, including father and mother Darren and Pam, as well as brother Chris, instilling a love for roping in Clint at a young age.

“Frisky taught me everything. He got me here, he taught me the fundamentals, and taught me everything I know. He was supposed to go to the NFR, but he didn’t make it.”
He vividly remembers the years where he and his family would stay up all night to watch the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas each December, mesmerized by the cowboys who competed. Clint’s dreams of competing in the National Finals Rodeo came true last year as he placed in three rounds at the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, finishing at number 11 in the world standings. Clint’s rodeo journey began when he was just 5 years old, but his love for horses began much sooner. For his first birthday, Clint received his first pony, Frisky, as a gift from his uncle and aunt, Larry and Denise Stewart. The two quickly became best friends, and their bond was powerful from day one. The Appaloosa pony was so loved in the rodeo community, and the Summers family turned down offers for thousands of dollars to keep their Frisky. He was more than just a horse to Clint—he was a member of the family. “Frisky taught me everything. He got me here, he taught me the fundamentals, and taught me everything I know. He was supposed to go to the NFR, but he didn’t make it,” Clint expresses. “Everyone in the rodeo circuit loved him. If they know me, they likely remember Frisky. There’s no telling how much money I made on that horse; I rode him until I was 14 or 15. Frisky was part of the family.” Throughout his high school rodeo career, Clint competed in many open amateur rodeos, describing his competitive nature as a driving force to enter more high-stakes rodeo rounds. He wanted to compete against the best of the best and win, as tougher competition meant he would continue to grow and advance towards his dream. Over the years, Clint and his family would travel from state to state, competing in open rodeos and building up his résumé. Clint also stayed with his rodeo friends in Texas for a few summers to learn the rodeo ropes and practice their team-roping skills. A career highlight to date, Clint and his roping partner Matt Sherwood won the George Strait Classic in 2014. The boys

That last day was a dream, with Clint and Matt scoring the highest in their category, winning over $100,000 each, in addition to trucks, trailers and other gear.
“I see kids at the rodeos and ropings, and it inspires me so much. I want to help them and to try to be a better role model for them.” “The George Strait Classic was always on the same weekend as the Lake City Rodeo, which I never wanted to miss. After winning in 2014, I drove all night to be back in town for the Sunday event in Lake City, and I remember waking up the next morning and seeing that truck and trailer in my yard, and just thinking, ‘Holy cow, this is crazy!’” Clint explains. “I’ll never sell any of it. I remember Matt gave me a hug after the event and he was crying. He said that winning that meant more to him than the two times he won the world championship.”
has had the opportunity to work with numerous peers who became friends, like his longtime best friend Kaleb Driggers, but one of the standout people is his rodeo idol and the King of Cowboys, Trevor Brazile. “I got to rope with Trevor, and he became one of my best friends,” Clint says. “I watched this guy my whole life and always looked up to him. Now I talk to him on a regular basis, and he’s my buddy.” Aside from his love for rodeo, Clint teaches courses on roping to kids and
The fact that team roping involves others is one of Clint’s favorite things about this event. As the heeler, it is Clint’s job to ensure that the steer is in position and that he can grab two feet. Teamwork really does make the dream work in this sport, making each person’s job irreplaceable in the event and challenging the partners to work together seamlessly. Clint

Clint Summers thanks his sponsors for supporting him in the pursuit of his dream! With a love for seeing a kid’s eyes light up when they successfully complete a rodeo move, Clint is proud to serve as a role model for kids, showing that dreams do come true.
“I see kids at the rodeos and ropings, and it inspires me so much. I want to help them and to try to be a better role model for them. Without guys like me and the guys I rope with, they wouldn’t have anything to look forward to and dream about,” Clint expresses. “I love to rope, but I like to go and spend time with kids at the rodeo and give them something to look forward to and encourage the kids to make them a goal and work towards it. I won’t be able to do it forever, but I dang sure want to do it while I can.” Above all else, Clint is proud to call Lake City home and hopes to represent his hometown well. He expressed how important family time is to him and just how much he loved to be back in Florida during his breaks in the circuit. The road to the NFR was paved with hard work, dedication and sacrifice, and Clint describes how much of his journey was impacted by the people who believed in his dream and his abilities. Clint thanks his family for their continued support, as well as his friends and extended family that have poured into his journey over the years. He also extends his gratitude to his teammates, partners, and rodeo idols who have inspired him to keep fighting for his dream, day in and day out. Even though Clint’s journey with roping is far from over, he encourages everyone with a dream to work hard and never give up. If you are passionate about a sport or an idea, give it your all and fight for your dream. You never know when your dream will come true! “I promise, anything can happen if you work at it hard enough,” Clint states. “Never give up because dreams do come true.” To keep in touch with Clint and follow his rodeo journey, connect with him on Facebook and Instagram @clintsummers. 24 |

When We Come Running: Conquering the
SPARTAN GAMES By Hayli Zuccola
With five miles already behind her, exhausted from undertaking over a dozen strenuous obstacles like wading through a mud pit, carrying a five-gallon bucket of rocks, and attempting to climb a 16-foot rope, Jennifer Peurrung was almost ready to give up. Tired and worn out, she still had another five miles to go—miles that left her contemplating how she even ended up in this situation. As part of her 30th birthday, Jennifer’s boyfriend and now fiancé, Christopher Coleman, gifted her with a pair of running shoes and tickets for the two of them to compete in the Spartan Super in Atlanta—one of three physically intense obstacle races that gradually increases in difficulty. Neither of them had participated in a race before, let alone one of this magnitude, but they were eager to take on the challenge... Christopher perhaps to a greater degree, but they were both excited nonetheless! That is until race day finally arrived and Jennifer was begging for any sign of the finish line.
Jennifer Peurrung and Christopher Coleman triumphantly complete the Spartan Beast in Mulberry, Florida.
“I was soaking wet; it was cold... and I was just like ‘man, this is for the birds,’’’ Jennifer says. Despite her mid-race struggles, when she approached the 10mile mark and leaped over a pile of blazing logs that marked the end of the race, her outlook changed. “At the end, you feel so accomplished! You literally are like ‘man, I just did that,’” she says. “I took the next day off of work

and I soaked in some Epsom salt because I was sore. Then I called Christopher and I said, ‘Hey, I think we can do our trifecta,’” which is the completion of three Spartan races in one calendar year. With the first relay nearing the end of October, the duo had just two months to prepare for the final two races—an ambitious feat, but one they weren’t going to shy away from. November quickly arrived and the cooler temperatures were paired with a road trip to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for the next obstacle course. Although The Sprint was a shorter distance—only five miles this time—the red clay landscape that covered the Palmetto State made for a greater and unexpected hurdle. Not only was the slick mud tough to run through, a dunk wall obstacle covered them from head to toe in the slippery substance that would only fade after rinsing in a two-hour shower. Regardless of their clay-stained skin, with the Sprint completed, they only had one more marathon before they could earn their trifecta, and they saved the worst for last: The Beast.

Equipped with snacks and perseverance, they arrived in Mulberry, Florida, eager to cross the finish line and earn their medal. It was strenuous to say the least—Jennifer even hyperextended her left knee—but there’s something about jumping over a fiery finish line that gives all participants a sense of pride and fulfillment. “When you jump over those logs, you know you’re done. You’re done running; you’re done with obstacles; you’re done with everything... It’s such a great, amazing feeling that you want to strive for next time,” Christopher expresses.
One of the many obstacles at the Spartan Sprint in South Carolina.
“During the first race, I was nervous because I didn’t know what to expect... I mean an 8- to 10-mile with 29 obstacles? That’s a little intimidating,” Jennifer says. “So, they’re intimidating, but they’re awesome when you cross that finish line.” “It just goes to show that we can do a lot more than we think we can,” Christopher says. In spite of her initial struggle at the halfway mark back in Atlanta, Jennifer and Christopher both went on to complete all three Spartan races and earn their trifecta—an achievement they plan on repeating in 2019.

FESTIVAL
CELEBRATING FLORIDA’S NATURAL BEAUTY By Hayli Zuccola Photography Carolyn Tarkington
Wrapped in lush greenery, a rainbow of butterflies, musical birds and vivid blossoms, Alligator Lake is an environmental sanctuary to Florida’s breathtaking scenery and wildlife. Over the years, the Columbia County icon has provided a picturesque landscape and a natural splendor that the Four Rivers Audubon Society recognized and wanted to publicize to the community. The Four Rivers Audubon Society is just one out of 44 Florida chapters that are part of the National Audubon Society. Formed in 1979, Four Rivers develops ways to connect with and preserve Florida’s natural wonders. From bird walks, conservation projects, and workshops, the group strives to connect the community with the beauty in their backyard. To build on that mission, they developed the Alligator Lake Spring Festival, which will be celebrating its 10th year on April 13, 2019.
The 10th Annual Alligator Lake Spring Festival will be held on April 13th from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with bird walks beginning at 8 a.m. To find out more information on events featured at this year’s festival, follow Four Rivers Audubon Society on Facebook or visit their website at fourriversaudubon.org.

“We started it because we wanted to engage with the community and teach the community about how special Alligator Lake is,” says Jacqui Sulek, president of Four Rivers. “We thought that between the fact that it’s the headwaters of the Ichetucknee and the fact that it’s a site on the Great Florida Birding Trail, this was something we really wanted the community to embrace, enjoy, and use.” One of the best ways to appreciate Alligator Lake is through birdwatching—an activity Jacqui notes is the second-fastest growing hobby in the United States, second only to gardening. The allure of birdwatching is easily understandable and comparable to a colorful scavenger hunt.

“One of the things that’s really great about birdwatching is that there’s so many different types of birds,” says Valerie Thomas, vice president of Four Rivers. “They’re so beautiful, you know. They’re everywhere, and the way I feel about birdwatching is it’s like a treasure hunt. You never know what you’re going to see; you never know what gem you’re going to find.” “I just think there’s a fascination with these amazing creatures, and I also think we all envy them because they can fly,” Jacqui says. Being that Alligator Lake is a birdwatcher’s wonderland, Valerie and Jacqui would marvel at their feathered discoveries during Four Rivers’ monthly Alli-Walks, but to pique the interest of the community, they aimed to make the Spring Festival the biggest outdoor event they could— attracting nature lovers, bird appreciators, and community enthusiasm that has continued to flourish over the past 10 years. This year’s event will feature butterfly walks with published author Mark Minno, guided bird walks, a birds of prey show with falconer Kitty Carroll, snakes and reptiles from Ichetucknee Springs State Park, educational exhibits, vendors showcasing naturerelated items, and other surprises.
To build on the appeal of the festival, the regional director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has partnered with Four Rivers to make their 10-year anniversary better than ever. With FWC’s support, the festival also plans on having a fishing derby and casting competition, kayaking excursions, and a demonstration on a poacher-detecting dog. “It’s just really exciting to see people come out and enjoy the things that we love,” Valerie says. “We always call it a community festival celebrating nature.” ”Columbia County doesn’t have any other parks that I can think of that has the diversity of landscape habitat,” Jacqui says. “We want people to come and enjoy this community gem that they have.” Even with all their planning and effort, Jacqui notes that Four Rivers wouldn’t be able to put on such an amazing festival without a helping hand, conveying gratitude toward community donations and promotional event spotlights. “We are grateful to all our partners who have been with us all these years and the volunteers—I mean it’s all volunteer run—and we’re very grateful to the county,” Jacqui says.

KITCHEN RENOVATION 5 Inspirational Trends Out with the old and in with the new! With 2019 in full swing, you may be deep into a home renovation or simply dreaming of a new look for your home. Check out these five big trends for kitchens to find some inspiration for your kitchen makeover.

POPS OF CONTRASTING COLORS Long gone are the days of monochromatic kitchens—pops of color are all the rage! To bring this trend into your home, consider two contrasting colors that mesh well with your current palette. For instance, if you have white appliances, consider adding a bright red backslash and updating the knobs on your cabinets in a shiny hue. The contrast of the colors will draw the eye and create an interesting focal point for your space.

TWO-TONED CABINETRY Keeping with the color theme, a big trend for 2019 is twotoned cabinets. If you have multiple rows of cabinets, consider experimenting with different hues on each row. An example of this would be painting the bottom row a smoky gray while washing the top row with a lighter, dusty version of the same gray. This keeps the color cohesive and in the same family, but offers an interesting take on the classic painted cabinet look.

MIXED METALS With so many beautiful metallic finishes out there, how will you ever choose your favorite? With this decor method, you won’t have to. Simply add in pops of brass and stainless steel throughout your displays and storage areas, utilizing a neutral color palette from the rest of the decor for consistency. If you are not loving the look, add in a few plants or sprigs of greenery for a natural vibe.
MINIMALISTIC CHIC While it is so fun to collect kitchen utensils, tools, and decor, sometimes having too much can leave an area unmanageable. If you’re feeling uninspired by your current setup, purge items you no longer use and opt for streamlined, functional decor. This may mean floating shelves to house your most used items or an understated table centerpiece. Whatever you choose, bring breath and life into the room with light shades and natural finishes.

QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS AND WOOD FINISHES Traditionally much less scratch resistant, many homes are choosing to incorporate quartz counters into their kitchen space, along with lowmaintenance wooden accents. Whether you are interested in transforming an entire wall using wood or simply adding a few feet of wood above an appliance as an accent, you can’t go wrong with this statement piece. The quartz and wood may seem like an odd pairing, but they work together to create a beautiful and unique space.

estled among Williston’s oak-tree-shaded countryside, rows of blueberry bushes stretch toward the horizon and fill the air with a sense of springtime. These tiny baby blues surround themselves with delicate leaves and spend each day soaking up the sunshine until they reach peak ripeness. Once a blueberry is plump and full of flavor, it’s plucked from the bush and ready to be enjoyed, but like nature’s candy, you can never have just one of these sweet treats! This picturesque landscape is the backdrop of Red, White and Blues Farm, where blueberries are incorporated into everything they do.
established and soon began producing fresh blueberries. So, what’s the farm’s secret to growing delicious, crisp blueberries? Devon notes that it’s the local spring water that gives the berries—which are 95 percent water—their distinct, mouthwatering sweetness. Of course, that spring water isn’t just for fueling fruit; it’s the main attraction at Devil’s Den, a renowned dive site, as well as the Blue Grotto Springs—both of which showcase the area’s crystal-clear water. “Out of the nine varieties that we have on the farm, you can taste the different flavor of all nine varieties, and that’s because of the water
IT’S JUST KIND OF NATURALLY GROWN INTO THIS HUGE AGRITOURISM FARM RIGHT HERE IN LITTLE OLD WILLISTON. Devon Robinson and his father, Terry, have been involved in the agriculture field for 35 years. Before moving north, they made a living in South Florida growing palm trees and bamboo until Terry developed a fascination with blueberries and the health benefits they provide. Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants and contain Vitamin C and Vitamin K. Additionally, this petite fruit can help improve memory, lower blood pressure, and may even prevent heart disease. However, with a growing demand in the area, the farm has expanded to become a one-stop blueberry shop by opening their farm to agritourism, providing a “u-pick” experience that’s the perfect springtime excursion.

“It’s just kind of naturally grown into this huge agritourism farm right here in little old Williston,” says Sarah, Devon’s wife and head of the agritourism side of Red, White and Blues Farm. While the farm is beginning to include peaches in the “u-pick” side of the business, it’s the blueberries that encompass a majority of the 100acre family farm. The farm is also home to a store that features local jams and honey, as well as a café that offers fresh, homemade items, most of which contain—you guessed it—blueberries. From blueberry chicken salad, blueberry-infused lemonade, pies and cobblers, to their most popular delicacy of a cold, refreshing blueberry milkshake, Red, White and Blues Farm offers everything to satisfy your blueberry cravings.

“Literally, our blueberry milkshake is famous,” says Sarah. “On the weekends, people just stand in line—there’s just a line out the door for our blueberry milkshakes.”

Mark and Tammy Magstadt
By Jeweliana Register
Mark and Tammy Magstadt met in 1974 when they became coworkers at a McDonald’s in their hometown. The pair quickly developed an interest in each other, but it was not until the summer of 1975 when they became Christians that they began to date, getting married just a couple of years later in 1977. The Magstadts are all about embracing life as it comes and investing in their relationship, crediting their over-40-year marriage to their mutual trust in each other. “You can invest in a marriage as much as you do in your education, your job, “It’s become a family to me, I’ve met some of the greatest people through my time volunteering,” Mark says. “It’s like a family reunion every time we’re together.” and even your financial future. We just decided early on to invest in our marriage, and it has really paid off,” Mark expresses. “After spending over 40 years together, I can truly say that each year is better than the last.” For the Magstadt family, life is anything but boring! The couple adores spending time with their five children, their spouses, and their 13 grandchildren. Take Charge Eat Healthy, Stay Fit & Live Well Over 60 Taking charge of your health is vital for not just adding years to your life, but adding life to your years. Among the top three recommendations for taking charge of your health are maintaining a healthy weight, getting seven to eight hours of sleep nightly, and keeping routine health exams and screenings. Regular checkups can help find potential health issues before they become a major problem. By getting proper health services, screenings, and treatment, you are taking important steps toward living a longer, healthier life. Featured here are 5 more tips for staying healthy beyond 60.
1
Eat Healthy Fats
You already know saturated fats are bad for your arteries and heart health, but you may not be aware they may also harm your concentration and memory. Cutting down on red meat, butter, and other foods high in saturated fats and adding foods with “good” unsaturated fats such as salmon, avocado, flaxseed, and nuts are beneficial for your heart and brain.

Protect Your Joints
Getting older doesn’t mean giving up your morning run or walk. Some previously believed running would wreck their knees, but new research suggests it might strengthen them. If you have arthritis or damaged joints, running could be too much. You can still benefit from exercise. Low-impact activities like walking or biking can help strengthen muscles, support joints, and lessen pain.

Surprise Yourself
Herman Griffin, upon retirement 21 years ago, decided to take piano lessons. He knew it would build new pathways in his brain, keeping his mind healthy. Try something new. Make new friends. Visit out-of-the-ordinary places. Learn a new language or learn a new skill. Trying new things will expand your options for finding excitement and happiness in life.
4
Phil and Lisa Hartley love their rescue dog, Buddy. Buddy will be three this year and fills their love tank daily. If your kids have moved out and your home feels empty, think about adopting a pet. Not only do pets provide companionship and promote physical activity, studies suggest people with pets gain emotional and physiological benefits such as reduced stress, decreased depression, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk for heart disease.
5
Slash Your Alzheimer’s Risk
Want to keep your mind sharp as you get older? Get moving! Regular exercise during your middle-age years can lower your odds of having memory and thinking problems when you’re older by almost half. Exercise boosts blood flow to your brain and helps new cells grow. Just 30 minutes of walking, biking, or even gardening five days a week can make a big difference. Following these guidelines can help you stay in good health and reduce the risk of many diseases that are more common in older adults. If you have not made good choices in the past, start NOW. Your body will benefit from making healthier lifestyle choices. It is never too late to start making good choices. It’s your life—take charge and enjoy all that life has to offer!

NONINVASIVE COSMETIC PROCEDURES ARE ON THE RISE FOR BOOMERS AND BEYOND By Anne Smith
dermatology and associate professor of plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
If age is a state of mind, why not match our look on the outside to the way we feel on the inside? Many people are interested in health, beauty, and fitness. With people living longer and working longer, it’s becoming a driving force for older adults to not only feel their best, but to also look their best.
With help from cosmetic procedures, a rising number of seniors are achieving results, especially with nonsurgical procedures with little or no downtime. In the last five years, nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, such as injectables like Botox and Juvederm Ultra, have increased by 93 percent for those 65 and older, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Rehabilitation
OPTIONS
By Jeweliana Register
for a healthy lifestyle
When you or a loved one is in need of care after surgery or injury, it is imperative to know about the physical therapy and rehabilitation options. While each situation is completely different and should be handled on a case-by-case basis, there are many care options available to seniors that can assist in the healing process. Read on to learn about a handful of rehabilitation options that may be of service to you. BALANCE THERAPY Bad falls are a leading cause of health concern for seniors across the United States. With increasing rates of fall-related injuries, seniors should be aware of this therapy that can help gain back independence and peace of mind. Through gait and balance therapy exercises, patients are able to work towards correcting poor posture, improving their reflexes, and decreasing the likelihood of experiencing aches and pains regularly. This form of rehabilitation can be implemented after a fall or injury, but it can also be used as a preventative measure to lessen or avoid injury. NEUROLOGICAL THERAPY After a traumatic injury or degeneration occurs, neurological disorders may develop. There are rehabilitation options for those who experience disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, strokes, spinal cord injury, concussions, and more. The neurological rehabilitation process seeks to offer relief from pain, restore movement, improve coordination, and assist patients in performing daily activities like bathing, writing, cooking, and completing other household duties. 52 |

Inpatient Care vs. Outpatient Care Are you searching for the best care option for you or a loved one? If so, check out this comparison of inpatient versus outpatient care to find an option that works best for your situation. • NPAT ENT CARE If you are searching for an all-inclusive option, inpatient care may be the choice for you. This care option gives patients the ability to stay in a facility, either short term or long term, and the care is brought to them. This offers the convenience of aroundthe-clock care combined with the benefits of the chosen therapy path. • O TPAT ENT CARE This route offers the benefits of therapy options from the comfort of your home, or at a local clinic or provider. Patients are provided with personalized therapy plans, complete with milestones to reach and personal health goals to achieve. Therapy is completed on a routine basis, but the patient does not stay on site 24/7.
ORTHOPEDIC THERAPY Looking to increase your range of motion and overcome joint pain? Orthopedic therapy may be right for you. There is a large range of options with this form of therapy—everything from strengthening exercises to cardiovascular exercises. Consult your physician about the benefits of this therapy and work out a plan that may work for you and your health goals. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY The most significant outcome for patients looking for rehabilitation options is typically the level of independence they can maintain postinjury or post-surgery. With occupational therapy, patients are taught techniques to help them save energy and increase range of motion. This type of therapy assists patients with completing daily tasks and gives patients the tools to function and readjust to life after injury. SPEECH THERAPY Aside from working with patients to develop skills to help with communication, speech therapy can also be beneficial for restoring the ability to eat and drink. With the goal of improving the quality of life, this rehabilitation option provides activities to practice skills that address brain deficits and changes in memory. Safety awareness, problem solving, and coping strategies are often a part of the programs as well.

Life after 60: Bruges, Belgium
By Jeweliana Register
Growing up, Janet Horton never lived a full calendar year in one state, explaining that she never felt fully rooted anywhere. Beginning her travels at the age of 17, Janet left home to work as a Kelly girl, determined to see the world. Over the next few decades, Janet would work, live or travel to all 50 states, visit every continent in the world and 58 members of the United Nations, and travel around the world three times. Janet’s life has been nothing short of a grand adventure, and that did not end when she retired. “For some people, traveling is in their blood, and for others they are perfectly happy never leaving home,” Janet says. “For me, I simply do not know how to not travel.” With tales from all of her travels, Janet expresses that travel at any age does require some compromise. Whether you are planning a trip around the world or just looking for a quick weekend getaway, there are so many options to stay, work and play in new cities, and Janet offers wisdom from her experiences to help guide your choices. There’s nothing like a bit of travel to put life into perspective! 54 |
FamilyMagazine
Exploring the world with Janet Horton Tip #1: Expect the unexpected.
Are you a compulsive planner or a go-with-the-flow kind of person? Either way, Janet tells every person travelling to expect the unexpected. No matter how perfectly crafted her itinerary, or even how flexible her plans may be, something always goes “wrong.” It’s all about your attitude in those situations, though. Look at the challenges and find a way to make them into a right, embracing life as it comes. Janet has travelled through hurricanes on ships and trains and has had itinerary destinations detoured for a plethora of reasons. Due to her plans changing quite often, Janet encourages aspiring travellers to plan ahead and prepare, but always be willing to adjust your itinerary as needed.
Tip #2: Determine your non-negotiables. Do you wish to travel to explore or simply enjoy? As Janet points out, there is definitely a difference, as one is more about immersing yourself in the culture and the other may be more suited for a vacation-style itinerary. Taking on most of her adventures solo, Janet expresses that the company you travel with is so important. Determine what your non-negotiables are when travelling before picking a buddy to join you on the
1000 Islands, Canada

Market in Japan
Ronda, Spain journey. Do you only stay in five-star hotels? Does your partner expect to stray away from hostels and stay on the beaten path? Determine the non-negotiables for you and any in your party ahead of time to avoid any problems during the trip.
“I have not been everywhere or seen everything, and I do realize that is not a realistic expectation; but I will keep traveling and enjoying each adventure.” —Janet Horton
Tip #3: Enjoy the journey. Janet has been known to show up to the airport, passport in hand, and simply pick a destination to explore from the departing flights list. This has proven to be a sure fire way
to add some spark and adventure into her life, but it does occasionally bring challenges of its own. While some may not be as spontaneous as this, Janet does encourage everyone to enjoy the journey. The destination is where memories can be made and photos can be taken, but the moments along the way are what becomes ingrained in our memories forever. Embrace the little setbacks, the surprise detours, and the beauty along the road. You’re sure to make memories you won’t soon forget. Travelling is always an adventure, but it does not have to be stressful or complicated. A roadtrip with friends an hour or two away may offer just as much joy as an international voyage, so avoid getting overwhelmed by your options. Find a place you’d love to see, grab your friends or family and head out for a quick overnight getaway. Walk along the shore, play board games with your loved ones, go for a shopping spree in local shops and just relax—travel does not need to break the bank! A small break in your routine is enough to reignite your fire for life and give you a new perspective.

No Gym? How to Exercise at Home By Anne Smith
If you don’t have access to a gym, you can still work out from the comfort and convenience of your home. Further, there are a lot of options besides hopping on a stationary bike or walking on a treadmill. Use these tips to help you set up a great space to exercise in your home: CHOOSE A LOCATION. Designate and declutter a spot in your home for your workouts. Don’t automatically pick your basement or garage—if it’s not an appealing space, you won’t want to spend a lot of time there. An empty corner or a spot near your TV, for instance, could be perfect. Seeing your exercise place may inspire you to get up and move—you don’t want it to be out of sight, out of mind. BUY THE NECESSITIES. You don’t need a lot of expensive, fancy gear. You can buy some basic items such as an exercise mat, stability ball, resistance bands, and a few dumbbells for under $100. Make your list based on what you want to do. USE THE WEB. Need an instructor? Check the web for online fitness classes. You can find yoga, dance, strength training, and others you can watch from your tablet or computer. YouTube.com has a wealth of videos. Learn how to tone your upper arms, build your core strength, and master easy cardio with an encouraging video workout buddy!
The Peloton Bike The Peloton is a new upscale stationary biking system that offers a convenient and immersive indoor cycling experience, streaming daily live classes from the New York studio directly into homes. Suwannee County
Emergency Management By Susan K. Lamb
Always Ready When Disaster Strikes Suwannee County Division of Emergency Management Assistant Director Sharon Hingson goes to work each day at the Suwannee County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) expecting the worst to happen. But, Sharon, who came to work at EOC in 2002, Sharon Hingson is fully trained and prepared to deal with any disaster in Suwannee County at a moment’s notice, leading in providing every type of assistance possible during disasters in this rural North Florida county. Sharon was promoted to her current position in 2018 by Suwannee County Sheriff and EOC Director Sam St. John. They are joined by a large group of trained personnel who all provide strong support during disasters. Some of the storms this group of highly trained professionals has worked include Tropical Storm Debbie, Hurricane Irma, and Hurricane Michael, along with many others over the years. County officials, volunteers, and others from the City of Live Oak and City of Branford fill the EOC for regular briefings during disasters. Others work the phones at the EOC, communicating with work crews, law enforcement, fire and rescue, and road crews in the field until the emergency has ended. It is here you will always find Sharon overseeing those in the EOC, on the phone with state emergency operations officials

When storms and emergencies have passed, Sharon gets back to her other official duties: preparing an annual budget, tracking expenses, coordinating countywide training to satisfy state and federal requirements, handling all emergency management grants, tracking each local disaster, continually training others, and attending statewide events to keep updated on new equipment available to counties and changes in the state’s handling of disasters. It is a neverending responsibility. You might also see Sharon conducting annual preparedness speaking engagements at Advent Christian Village in Dowling Park, maintaining the SCSO Division of Emergency Management Facebook page, or handling a dozen other huge responsibilities to help others. “I have learned through this job to form strong relationships with people all over as you move forward,” Sharon notes. Time has shown her that when rapid help is needed, there is always someone out there you have met along the way who can give advice or stand with EOC in times of need. And when the shoe is on the other foot, such as when west Florida counties were devastated by Hurricane Michael, the Sheriff ’s Office, EOC, and citizens donated and delivered food, water, and other necessities directly to those in need. This busy Suwannee County Sheriff ’s Office employee achieved certification in 2005 as a Florida professional emergency manager, attended the
two-week Emergency Management Academy at the Fire College in 2002, and was selected in 2018 to serve as the statewide Florida Emergency Preparedness Association (FEPA) chaplain, a volunteer position where she is very proud to serve. Overseeing an emergency management office is not for the faint of heart, the untrained nor those inexperienced in making quality quick decisions. In this position, the assistant director must work well with all concerned and be prepared to make decisions that best serve the entire county. Citizens can rest assured they are in good hands.
Emergency Management Specialist Robin Peiffer is passionate about serving the community through her work.

TeleHearing How Technology Can Help with Hearing Health
By Hayli Zuccola
“The reason we did the video that gives the perspective of the practice and my perspective as an audiologist and then the patient’s perspective is we plan to use those videos to teach audiologists all over about how this can benefit their practices,” Dr. Griffin says. “Our goal is to be able to have more practices use this method.” that makes it easier for those living in rural areas to have access to hearing healthcare.
TeleHearing Monitors Dr. Debra Griffin has been in the audiology field for over 30 years. She became interested in the prospect of helping the hearing-impaired after taking a job at a clothing store located near the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine. Due to the fact that many of her customers were deaf and she wasn’t skilled in sign language, Dr. Griffin wanted to find a way to improve the communication barrier between people with difficulty hearing and those without, which is why she decided to return to school to get her bachelor’s and master’s degrees through the School of Communication Science and Disorders at Florida State University.

“I had no idea what I was getting into,” Dr. Griffin expresses. “I just knew what was in my heart.” After completing a clinical fellowship at the UF Shands Hearing Clinic and ENT Clinic in Gainesville, a five-year stint at an ENT practice in Jacksonville, and a five-year position at Walmart’s newly incorporated hearing center in Jacksonville, Dr. Griffin was ready to open her own private practice in 1998. Hearing Solutions, whose flagship location resides at 183 NW Veterans Street in Lake City, has grown to include satellite offices in Live Oak and Dowling Park—an extension
To continue their expansion and reachability, Hearing Solutions teamed up with Lydia Gladwin, the manager of TeleHealth Training, and Suzanne Younker, the director of TeleHealth, through Your Hearing Network to pilot a TeleHearing program at the Lake Citybased business. TeleHearing is just one branch of the thriving TeleHealth initiative, which involves bringing experienced doctors and professionals to the patient through telecommunications. With state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Griffin and medical experts in other fields like neurology and psychology can virtually examine their patients from anywhere. In Hearing Solutions’ case, an audiology assistant acts as the hands of the audiologist by meeting the patient at a satellite office and administering various tests using gadgets equipped

Besides bringing awareness to the advancing technology in the medical world, Hearing Solutions is discovering ways to bring attention to ear health in general with their Go Bananas campaign.

with detail-capturing cameras. As the assistant uses the high-tech tools to look into the patient’s ear, the live footage can be seen by the assistant, the patient themselves, and the audiologist who is present through the computer. With the overall positive feedback received from the new TeleHearing methods, Hearing Solutions put together an assortment of videos documenting the
benefits of the program, not only to the professional and the practice, but most importantly, to the patient. “The reason we did the video that gives the perspective of the practice and my perspective as an audiologist and then the patient’s perspective is we plan to use those videos to teach audiologists all over about how this can benefit their practices,” Dr. Griffin says. “Our goal is to be able to have more practices use this method.”
“There are a lot of things that cause hearing loss and complicate hearing loss, but research shows us that a lack of potassium causes hearing loss,” Dr. Griffin explains. To promote the importance of bananas and their auditory benefits, Hearing Solutions will be joining other vendors at upcoming local health fairs to offer free screenings and educational information to participants.
Hearing health is important. Hearing loss is a major public health issue that is now the third most common physical condition in adults after arthritis and heart disease.
Dr. Griffin and her team are currently waiting for approval to give a presentation on the advantages of the TeleHearing program during the International Hearing Society’s meeting in Nashville in September. They also plan on sharing their videos and experiences with the Florida Academy of Audiology as well as with smaller organizations to generate a greater interest in the new procedures.
Just like getting a yearly checkup maintains your overall health, when you reach a certain age, it’s important to be aware of your auditory health. As one of the five senses, hearing loss and tinnitus, which is ringing in the ears, can be problematic, but they don’t have to be. Now with technological advances like TeleHearing, it’s easier than ever to keep your ears in check—well, provided you cut back on the head-banging rock concerts and remember to eat your bananas!

Life in a small town can be hectic or unusually quiet. The Frame Shop and Gallery in downtown Live Oak sits next to US 90 where life there can be both quiet and loud. A recent visit to this small, historic shop of treasures was both. The traffic outside would roar when the 100-plus-year-old door opened occasionally. But inside, two men leaned forward in their seats as they concentrated on drawing and painting the resemblance of a male artist with an artist’s cap who was the day’s live drawing model. The room around them is filled to the brim with frames of every type and age. Almost every frame has a hand-drawn and painted scene in them of life in North Florida. Those scenes include
members young and old from the Live Oak Woman’s Club, dressed in country outfits and playing fiddles for a club event. It is striking, complete with images you may recognize and colors that draw your attention immediately. You can’t take your eyes off this painting. Surrounding the painting are dozens of scenes from rural areas—houses still standing from another century, familiar faces, children, important historical buildings, and more. Almost all are painted by John Rice. Nestled into this old building with wood flooring that hasn’t seen paint or stain in years are fabulous picture frames, ornate and aging, that draw your eyes toward them and make you think, “I have a painting that would be beautiful in that!” If you need to have a photo or painting framed, this is the place to go. If you like to paint and draw, come on in! If you want to calm your day and get a new feeling about life, step inside. You have arrived at a one-of-a-kind frame shop and gallery. The Frame Shop and Gallery’s owner, John Rice—a small, humble man who never imagined he would become an artist, own a frame shop, or become one of the best artists in North Florida—sat close to his lighted board with artist’s sketch paper as he drew his interpretation of today’s volunteer model, Oren Suave. While John saw the model as a subject for head-to-foot interpretation, the other artists saw this scene differently. Doug Thomas, a retired poultry farmer who recollects raising chickens (about a million every year), cows, and kids before he retired, handles his drawing pencils like he was born with them in his hands. “I’ve been drawing and painting for maybe 40 years,” Doug remarks. Doug was the afternoon artist comic of the gang of three, there to have a drawing/painting session that afternoon. John’s wife, Debbie, visits a while then leaves for other duties after greeting guests in the shop. A stranger comes to the door, letting in the noise of a semi-truck, but it doesn’t deter the two artists or the model. John greets his customer who is a visitor just traveling through looking for somewhere to get a meal. A few moments of sharing directions to the best place to eat, and The Frame Shop is once again quiet as the weekly Thursday afternoon painting session continues. A highly regarded artist, John was honored with an exhibit and reception at North Florida Community College, Madison, recently. For that event, John said he was basically self-taught, learning from books and other artists at the local Artists’ Guild in Live Oak. It’s obvious people are John’s favorite subject, but he also follows in the footsteps of one of his early mentors, John Lawson, the previous shop owner. He can often be seen around North Florida painting people, buildings, historical sites, and anything that attracts him by day or by flashlight near midnight! Debbie, John’s wife, is also an artist and is responsible for the beautiful mosaics you see around the shop. She is also an accomplished musician. These two met when John was in a traveling rock n’ roll band, The Music Company, for a Spring 2019 | 69
The Frame Shop and Gallery offers professional picture framing, portraits, frames, original art, and art prints for sale. number of years in New England. The couple moved to Tampa eventually, leaving the band. John said he did many jobs over the years until they moved to Live Oak when Debbie’s parents bought a convenience store. “When we moved here, I just stumbled in here one day,” John remembers of what is now his store. “John Lawson helped me and taught me the framing business. I was 40 then, and I had never did any drawing or painting.” During that time, Lawson, a prominent artist himself, took John Rice under his wing and taught him about being an artist and how to run a business. John notes he met Lawson in 1991, worked with his L ik e most people interested shop and gallery until in pictorial art, I want to Lawson retired in 1995, and draw lik e M ichelang elo, then purchased the store paint lik e da V inci, be as from him. “Like most people interested in pictorial art, I want to draw like — John R ic e Michelangelo, paint like Owner and Artist da Vinci, be as popular The Frame Shop and Gallery as Kinkade, and live the exuberant and eccentric lifestyle of Dali,” John commented for the NFCC promotion. “But, failing that, maybe I can just do the best work I’m capable of at the moment I’m in.” This comment is the perfect example of who John is and how he runs his shop and gallery. It’s laid back, comfortable, quiet, interesting, has that New Orleans welcome feel, and it’s a treasure trove for the community. You, too, can make treasures here at the weekly art sessions. Doug said once when there was a jazz festival downtown next to the shop and gallery, he and John posted a sign saying they would draw people’s pictures for $20—they didn’t move from their chairs the entire day! “We just did it for promotion, and they lined up...We couldn’t take a break!” Doug remembers, laughing. With so much to experience, a visit to The Frame Shop and Gallery is sure to be anything but boring. For more information about the shop, or to learn about opportunities to explore your artistic side, find John Rice on Facebook or call 386-362-2066.

SERVICE CENTER
W
The Christian Service Center originally opened behind Hotel Blanche.
What began as a small operation behind the Blanche Hotel in the early 1980s has since grown into a thriving, community-based organization that impacts thousands of people within the local community every year. The Christian Service Center of Columbia County, Inc. is a non-profit organization that dedicates its efforts to helping those in need. Through prayers and donations, the center has been able to help over 10,000 residents in Columbia County within the past year.

The mission behind the center is to not only aid people with what they need presently, but to also guide them on their future endeavors.
Larger items are stored in the warehouse.
SERVICES OFFERED THROUGH THE CENTER The Christian Service Center, which is now located off Washington Street, helps with food and clothing needs, household goods, furniture, some financial assistance, and prayer. The center has multiple rooms that are generously filled with donated items from the community. “Surprisingly, as big as Lake City is, there’s a large rural portion of it, and there’s a big need for all those items in Columbia County,” says Chris Walters, Executive Director of the Christian Service Center. When someone comes in for assistance, Chris explains, they are interviewed to determine what their needs are in order to find the best solution for them. The center also provides showers, clothing, and food for the homeless.

“For instance, if they come in, we’ll kind of coach them on choosing different avenues,” Chris says. “We’ll help them with their food stamps or just act more as a guide because a lot of people just don’t know what’s out there.”
SPECIAL EVENTS & ON-SITE GIFT SHOP Throughout the year, the Christian Service Center holds numerous special events in order to help raise funds for its services and give back to the community. “We have a program called Happy Feet School Shoes,” says Chris. “It’s a program that collects new shoes and socks for children. We then give these items to children who need a new pair of shoes to start the school year with.” The center also holds an annual Christmas toy drive, distributes over 300 Christmas food baskets during the holidays, and hosts a community warehouse sale a few times each year. All the money collected through the Lighthouse is used to purchase food for the center. “It more or less handles our entire food budget,” Chris explains.

The Christian Service Center is supported solely by private donations from churches, individuals, and businesses throughout the community. “Currently, we have about 70 volunteers,” Chris says. “If people are looking to help out, we’re always seeking volunteers or donations, both monetary and physical.” Including Chris himself, the center only employs three people. The center’s success is largely dedicated to the volunteers who spend countless hours helping those in need. The center began in 1982, and has seen many people come and go for nearly four decades. However, some volunteers have remained at the center near its inception. “I’ve stayed for so long because I believe in this place,” says Elsie Holliday, a volunteer who has dedicated many years of her life to the center. She has served on the board and has volunteered at the center since 1987. Although Elsie has stopped coming in as often as she used to, the center will always be a big part of her life. “I love this place, and they know I miss it,” she says. “There’s still people out there that need help, and the center is a great way to give back to the community that supports us.” Another dedicated individual is Celestine Levy, who has volunteered and served on and off the board for 30 years.

“I prayed to God and said if he’d let me live long enough, I would volunteer every day of my retirement,” Celestine says. “I remember thinking that I didn’t want any money, I just wanted to give my time.” Celestine says she still volunteers at the center every Tuesday. Her favorite part of coming into volunteer is how friendly everyone acts, even when you interact with complete strangers.
The Lighthouse Gift Shop sells newer and gently used donated items. The funds from the gift shop go towards purchasing food for the center. The Lighthouse Gift Shop is open during the week on Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What does a high school senior, a single mother of three, and the CEO of Google all have in common? Well, besides the high degree of stress they all undoubtedly share, they each only have 24 hours in their days. That truth is not some earth-shaking new revelation by any means, but it is nonetheless fascinating to think about. Every individual person on our planet, from plumbers to prime-ministers, students to star athletes, and restaurateurs to retirees are given the same window of time each day to accomplish everything on their to-do lists. No matter how powerful, important, or busy we may be, we are all bound by the same number of hours, minutes, and seconds in our days—the only difference is how we choose to use them.

By Chip Parker
The problem is, most of us are not intentionally choosing how we use those hours, minutes, and seconds. Most of our days just happen, and at the end of the week we wonder what we actually accomplished and where our time went. However, by learning and practicing a few simple timemanagement principles, I believe we can all start being more intentional with how we spend our days, and you can start making the most of your time. Here are three practical keys to start making the most of your time today.
Learn to prioritize. Not everything is equally important. Most everyone would agree with that statement, however most of their calendars can’t back the statement up. Most of our calendars are filled with seemingly endless “to-dos” that ultimately do not do much to move the needle in our lives. Simply put, while we know there are certain tasks in our day that are more important than others, we still find ourselves spending far too much time dealing with those things we know are ultimately unimportant. In fairness, some “unimportant” tasks are necessary, but honestly, many—if not most—are not. If we are going to make the most of our time, we have to start prioritizing the things that are important, the things that give us our purpose and our passion, the things that matter. You’ll never completely get away from those things that are necessary yet unimportant, but making the most of your time means spending more of it on the important things in your life. Find your peak. Once you decide to spend most of your time on what is most important, take it a step further and give it your best time as well. Research clearly shows that each of us have “peak” times during our day when we are the most productive, creative, and generally “on our game.” In his book When, author Daniel Pink argues that “when to” is the new “how to.” His main point is that when we do our most important work is a major contributing factor in the amount and quality of the work that gets done. For instance, it’s generally not a good idea to start doing important, detail oriented projects around 2:30 in the afternoon. It may be better for you to save that time for zeroing out your inbox instead. Here’s the catch—I’m not sure when your peak time is; that’s something you have to spend the time figuring out yourself. But when you figure it out, moving your most important work to that spot can be a large step in helping you make the most of your day. Give time away. One sure fire way to NOT make the most out of the hours, minutes, and seconds we’ve been given is to spend all of them on ourselves. I know at first glance this may seem counterproductive. I know many people feel so busy and overwhelmed that any “me time” they can get is a cherished treasure. I get it, but I also know the single most overlooked way to make the most of your time is to give some of it away. I am convinced a large part of making the most of our time is finding a purpose outside of ourselves—something bigger to live for; some way to be reminded that the world doesn’t revolve around us. There is an old Chinese saying that goes, “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.” So, let’s do this! Let’s start making the most of the time we’ve been given. Let’s take inventory of our lives and decide what really matters. Let’s invest the best of our hours, minutes, and seconds into what is really important. Let’s use our time to make a difference in our world.

Bringing hope to those in need in Columbia County
With the mission of bringing hope to all, the Renewed Outreach Center was founded in an effort to intentionally fight against homelessness in our community and give a hand up to those who genuinely want to improve their lives. Located off of Highway 90 behind Red Lobster, this building has become a hub that helps struggling individuals and families get back on their feet while teaching them skills that will carry them through life. Reaching far beyond physical needs, this ministry is focused on loving people like Christ does and providing the tools to help them fulfill their purpose.

The Renewed campus is under construction, but there are many operational areas currently used in serving the needs of those in our
community. The center provides food boxes to those in need, praying with the families who come in to receive the food items. Aside from their boxes that service
over 140 families each month—over 83,000 meals last year alone, Renewed also provides clothing and hygiene items to individuals and families in need. The items come from community donations, with some of the goods being sold in their campus thrift store. The Renewed Thrift Store features all sorts of household items from furniture and clothing to books and children’s toys, all sold at thrift store prices to help fund the ministries out of the center. It is truly a thrift store lover’s paradise at Renewed! Reaching beyond the norm, Renewed Outreach Center has a model that provides people with the ability to learn and grow. In addition to providing food and clothing options to the homeless, the center also offers regular computer classes to teach
“Christ said that we can be His voice and we can be His hands. The Bible says He was the Word made flesh. So, the love of God needs to be manifested in our daily life. That’s what we want to be. We want to meet people where they are and love them, lift them up, and help them to have that fresh start they need.” —Pastor Lonnie Johns valuable skills needed to reenter the workforce. From résumé help to proficiency classes for Microsoft Office, Renewed offers guidance to those looking for work. The center also works with local businesses to help place people in jobs needing to be filled. These computer classes are open to anyone, so if you are looking to polish up your résumé or learn more about computers, this may be your perfect match. The vision for the center is to be a safe place for the struggling and hurting while equipping them to become self-sufficient again. In addition to the computer classes, Renewed has a counseling center with licensed counselors who assist struggling families and individuals through tough times. The outreach center is also the meeting place for Genesis, a drug and alcohol addiction ministry that offers support for those with addictions and their families. This group meets one evening a week to offer tools to overcome addictions and assist individuals who are fighting to get their life back on track. While the ministry is ever evolving to meet the needs of our community, the heart behind the center is to reach out to struggling individuals and families by demonstrating God’s love for all.

Bonjour! By Ruth Williams
Enriching students’ lives
through the French language When Carol Wise scheduled her nineteenth trip with students to France in 2017, this so happened to coincide with the exact day of the final match of the World Cup. Along with France, her students and group got to celebrate this historic win along the Seine River with everyone in the streets chanting together, “Allez les Bleus!,” which means, “Go Blue!” Learning and traveling are “sans fin” (unending), Carol says. Carol has served as a French instructor at Columbia High School for nearly 39 years. She is a member of Foreign Language Educators of Northeast Florida (FLENEF) and Florida Foreign Language Association (FFLA), serving on the boards of these organizations since 2000; an honor that comes from hard work, building relationships, making connections, and serving on boards with other world language teachers.

ucked between Live Oak and Lake City lies Magnolia Farms, a beautiful property where people from all over the country come to live with their horses and attend dressage clinics and similar events. The sprawling land includes a cottage, a guesthouse, farm owner Cathy Willson’s personal home that has an addition built on for guests, a stable, and a large covered area for horse training and events. The farm has the capacity to provide room and board for up to fifteen horses and riders at a time, many of which stay all winter to train and ride during the moderate Florida season. These winter boarders typically arrive after Christmas and stay until March or April. During their time at the farm, the facilities are leased to each individual, and they care for their own horses on the property while taking full advantage of the various amenities. In addition to winter boarders, the facilities are also used by people visiting for the dressage clinics and whatever other events that may be taking place. “It just depends on who’s visiting! Sometimes pony club kids get together, and sometimes groups of women come down for a clinic. Many of them come from far away, so they’re able to hang out for the weekend and just have a good time,” Cathy says. Cathy has had a passion for horses since she was young. After relocating to the area from Maryland in 2001, she began to work towards her goal of building what Magnolia Farms has since become. “I wanted to turn my farm into a facility where people could come and stay and train with their horses,” Cathy says. A rider herself, she has her own horses on the property as well, and while she doesn’t train any guests’ horses anymore, she is working with her own horses with the hope that at least one will rise up the levels in dressage. Dressage is a form of riding similar to ballet—the “dancing horses,” as it’s sometimes called. “It’s an art form, and it doesn’t matter the kind of horse—all horses can do it depending on their athletic ability and training,” Cathy says.
Winter 2018 | 91
The dressage clinics are coordinated with Wellborn Quarter Horses and typically happen over a long weekend. Cathy describes these days as very fun events where people come in with their horses to train with a visiting instructor, socialize with other riders, and just have a good time. The time with the instructor is typically spent working with horse and rider individually. Depending on each situation and need, the training can consist of anything from show preparation to competition preparation, and the competitions they train for take many riders all around the world. Anywhere from 25 to 100 people typically attend these clinics, and these weekends also include breakfasts, lunches, coffee, and even a potluck dinner on Saturday night. For Cathy, the social aspect of her farm is one of the most important elements. “There really isn’t much by way of social activities in this area, and this is a great place for horse people to get together with others like them,” she says. “And it’s entertaining for me because it keeps me busy!” It is also, and she explains, a great place for riders to discuss problems they may be having and learn from their peers. “There’s a lot of just shooting the breeze and a lot of great conversation,” Cathy says. As the winter boarders begin to head back home, Cathy says there are many different events planned for spring and summer. Magnolia Farms has a visiting instructor from Germany scheduled, as well as a visiting instructor from South Florida. Through these events and many to come, Magnolia Farms will continue to be a destination for horse lovers from all across the country, and the future is bright. For more information about Magnolia Farms, call 386-209-5699. This equestrian paradise is truly breathtaking, so you’ll have to see it for yourself!

Easter Candy Cupcakes By Jeweliana Register
Looking for a sweet treat to indulge in after a lively Easter egg hunt? These cute cupcakes pair perfectly with a variety of teas and other Easter snacks. So, break out your favorite cupcake recipe and gather up the beloved springtime candies to create a quick and easy dessert for your Easter gathering.
Colorful Robin Egg Creation What you’ll need: Cupcakes of your choice Vanilla frosting Icing bag and small icing tip Green food coloring Assortment of colored candy robin eggs
Directions: Start by baking the cupcakes of your choice and allowing them to cool. In a bowl, combine vanilla frosting and green food coloring until your desired color is reached. Gracie chose to create a pretty pastel green rather than a dark green for this design. Transfer your mixture to an icing bag, piping the mixture slowly to create the grass-like finish (a small icing tip will yield the best results). Top the cupcakes with your favorite color combination of robin eggs and enjoy!

Place two of your marshmallow creations into the icing to reveal the sparkly bunny ears, creating an adorable Easter treat for your family!
Jumping Jellies Are you a jelly bean lover? If so, this trick may be for you! Once you have whipped up your favorite frosting, add a few drops of green food coloring to dye the mixture. Sheila Sparks By Isaac Myers
When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, Sheila Sparks certainly knows a thing or two. Between teaching classes as a level-one CrossFit trainer in Lake City and spending time on her farm in Fort White, Sheila prides herself on being very active. When she’s not teaching her CrossFit classes, she spends her days tending to her garden, doing chores around the farm, and taking care of the horses, chickens, rabbits, and parakeets she raises with her husband and two daughters.

Along with her active lifestyle, health-conscious eating is a top priority for Sheila— and always has been. “When I was little, I printed out a food pyramid, put it on the fridge, and insisted my younger siblings to follow it!” Sheila laughs. She focuses on a healthy diet by avoiding eating out as much as possible and consuming organic, non-GMO food, some of which she grows herself. Depending on the season, Sheila’s garden typically includes kale, lettuce, potatoes, onions, red onions, radishes, tomatoes, many types of flowers, and much more. Some of these delicious fresh foods are featured in her spring kale salad recipe she shared with us.

SISTERS IN SPIRIT
Making A Difference! In 2016, two sisters in Christ, Sister Priscilla Darling and Sister Cindy Davis, got together to form a sisterhood with the purpose of creating a bond and unifying North Central Florida Sisters in the Churches of Christ. Their mission was to work together in order to be the difference in local communities. After sending out letters describing the purpose of Sisters in Spirit, four sisters from their local congregations met over breakfast, and Sisters in Spirit was established. Now consisting of about 20 women, their purpose and goal is to share the love of God and provide a one-on-one mobile pavilion of outreach ministries for those who are in need of help or encouragement. Each month they are providing meals, sponsoring clothing giveaways, or singing in nursing homes and shelters to bring spirit and light from heart to heart. Because of their efforts and passion, communities are being blessed and encouraged by their presence and seeing the Spirit abounding in Sisters in Spirit!

Sam Minton, devoted husband, father and grandfather

FamilyMagazine
This day is all about Dad! From preparing his favorite meal to gifting him with a shiny new set of tools, Father’s Day is a time to honor the dads who stepped up and made a difference in the lives of their families and communities. To celebrate this special day, Family Magazine is featuring a very special family who believes in the impact of a faithful father who invests in the lives of his children and his children’s children. There’s nothing more valuable than quality time, and the time these three generations spend together in Sam’s workshop will be cherished for years to come. Sam Minton is a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a Navy veteran and farm owner. Sam and his high school sweetheart, Nancy, are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year! After working over 30 years as an electrical lineman, Sam retired to his 34-acre farm in Wellborn, spending his days taking care of their cattle and experimenting with special projects. Following in his father’s footsteps, Sam’s son Mike Minton is a Navy veteran as well. Mike serves as the battalion chief at the Lake City Fire Department and also works as a registered nurse in the emergency room at the Lake City Medical Center. Additionally, Mike is a licensed paramedic. Sam and Mike have their share of crazy stories from experiences over the years, like the time they drove a truck with a shattered windshield from a blue heron collision from Naples to Lake City. The duo have completed so many projects together, everything from installing decks and boardwalks at local springs (Branford Springs, Troy Springs and Little River Springs) to totally restoring Sam’s 1968 Ford F-100. They completely revived the old truck, bringing it to life with new, vibrant blue paint and an old motor from the junkyard. No matter the project, Sam and Mike are eager to jump in and find a solution to the problem. Whether they have the prior experience or not, the guys are always ready to lend a helping hand and figure it out as they go along. “Anything that is broke we try to fix ourselves. Sometimes we don’t, but sometimes we do,” Mike says. “Don’t be scared of it; it’s already broke—you can’t make it any worse, and you may just turn around and fix it. “ “Either that, or we’ll break it to where no one else can fix it again!” Sam adds. The father and son duo turned into a trio a few years ago with Mike’s son Dalton joining the crew and jumping into projects in the workshop. Dalton
Spring 2019 | 107
is a third grader at Pinemount Elementary School who loves spending time with his grandpa and dad outdoors. From welding to restoring trucks to scuba diving, Dalton is excited to take on any project with his family. “One thing I want to instill in my kids is the knowledge of these things. I’m not saying they have to do all these things like change the starters or build something from scratch, and they don’t have to do that for a living, but just know how to do it,” Mike explains. “It may save you a little money down the road, or if you do pay someone to do it, you’ll know they are doing it right.” More than anything, the Minton family is intentional about spending time together and learning from each other. Sam took what he learned from his father and passed it down to Mike, who is now passing down that knowledge to Dalton. With each generation, the boys build off of how their father did it and learn new skills together. Bouncing ideas off of each other and learning from their experiences keeps their lives interesting, and the impact of their quality time will span across the generations to come. “There’s a lot of memories out there in that shop,” Mike says. “We’ve worked together for so long that it seems like half the time we don’t even talk because we don’t have to. We just know what the other is thinking. It’s something I want to pass down to my kids.”
Sam’s
Cigar Box Guitars “I don’t like sitting in the house; I like to be outside working on a project,” Sam says. “If you look at the guitars, they have different parts on them, making each one unique.”
Mike, Dalton, and Sam Minton
Created completely from scratch, Sam’s cigar box guitars offer a new take on the classic instrument. Offered in a variety of colors, the instruments each have a unique sound and interesting twists. One of the guitars may utilize a sink drain on the body, while another design may incorporate dominos. Each design features a vibrant cigar box and real wood to bring the guitar to life. Sam is proud to offer his creations to the public, and these make the perfect gift for the music lover in your life. They look beautiful hanging on the wall, but they can all be played as well! “They are built very well. The sound Dad gets out of them is crazy,” Mike explains. “Every one of them has a different sound to it, which is neat.” For more information about the instrument, or to place an order for a custom guitar, email Sam and Nancy Minton at shineonson@msn.com.

FamilyMagazine
On a cool, rainy day last November, Dusty, a teacher at Summers Elementary and pastor of Tustenuggee United Methodist Church in Fort White, and Carrie, the vice president of development at Rimrock, were married atop a beautiful tree-lined hill south of Lake City. Their 1920s-themed wedding was the event of season, with their friends and family coming in from all over the United States to celebrate with them. It was an evening of love, family, community—everything they could have ever wanted it to be. The Beginning: A Match.com made in heaven Their beginning is a reflection of the digital world in which we live, where 22 percent of couples meet online—this is how Dusty and Carrie’s story began. The pair connected on Match. com just over 3 years ago, and Carrie says the chemistry was instant. “We began talking on Thursday, and our first date was that Sunday.” That first date took place at the Great Outdoors Restaurant in High Springs, on what ended up being the evening of Super Bowl 50. Dusty is a committed football fan, and, as Carrie says, “in hindsight, knowing what I know about him now, the fact that he took me out instead of watching the Super Bowl is pretty significant.” Although, Dusty jokes, “I made sure we were situated at our table so that I could still see the TV, just in case the date went south.”
" I m ready ' to make a commitment; if you asked me, I'd say 'yes.' "
Dusty is a father of two daughters, and he says that Carrie’s compatibility with his girls was paramount. “It’s so important as a single parent to make sure you are entering into a relationship with someone who will be fruitful for the responsibilities you already have—your kids.”

The two became inseparable very quickly, but Carrie told Dusty she didn’t want to make any commitments for a year and if he wanted to ride that out with her, he could. However, it wasn’t until they had been dating almost two years that she finally told him, “I’m ready to make a commitment; if you asked me, I’d say ‘yes.’” The Proposal A few short months later in April of 2018, while Carrie was working out of town, the two met for lunch. Carrie is a selfdescribed “huge book nerd,” and the venue Dusty selected was Chamblin’s Bookmine, a used bookstore with a café in downtown Jacksonville. During lunch, Dusty excused himself to the bathroom, and their waitress approached Carrie with a note that read, “Meet me upstairs. We have time for this.” Carrie still had no idea what was happening, and she recalls, “I wandered upstairs thinking ‘Where is this clown? Like, c’mon, dude. What’s going on?’”
Spring 2019 | 113
After a hint from the waitress, she began a treasure hunt that took her from clue to clue throughout the aisles of used books, ending in an alcove with Dusty on one knee, holding a book from which he had cut out a compartment and placed the ring inside. “For me,” Carrie says, “proposing in a used bookstore was literally the most romantic thing he could have done. It was perfect.” Of course, she said “yes!” The Big Day And with that, the date was set for November 2, 2018. With only about six months to plan, Carrie hired Amy at Imperial Productions as her wedding planner, a decision she says made all the difference. “Because of Amy, everything came together so well. It never would have worked in that amount of time without her. She’s truly a miracle worker,” Carrie says. Just a few days before the wedding, it became clear that rain could be an issue. But rather than move the ceremony inside, they decided to chance it. “We knew that outside would be so much nicer,” Carrie says, “so unless it started pouring,
" Proposing in a used bookstore was literally the most romantic thing he could have done. "
Dusty and Carrie wanted their wedding to be a day when the people they loved from all walks of life could come together and celebrate with them. As Carrie put it, “Honestly, it was more about that than it was about us. We wanted to look out on the people that matter to us and see them enjoying each other.” This idea carried into the reception, where rather than a catered dinner with seating assignments, they opted for food trucks and open communal seating. They also opted for a no-wedding-gift rule and, instead, requested guests to donate to Habitat for Humanity and the Pregnancy Care Center of Lake City.
Dusty and Carrie say their wedding symbolized their shared purpose, their love for people and bringing folks together. “It brings us so much joy and satisfaction, truly,” says Carrie, “and our wedding was a representation of what our marriage is built on—loving people—and some attraction, of course.”
we decided that the ceremony would stay there.” In the end, although rain persisted throughout the day, it stopped 30 minutes before the ceremony and began again barely 15 minutes after they said “I do.” The ceremony was conducted by Pastor Clyde Douglas, minister of music and worship at Faith Bible Church in Lake City, and a close friend of Dusty’s. For the couple, his sermon and subsequent ceremony captured something that was very important to them—rooting their marriage in a Christian union.

Whether you are a neutral gal or you love a bright pop of color, you are sure to find something here that will leave hearts in your eyes.
1 BERRY PINK A fresh take on pink or burgundy decor, these colors offer an elegant twist to the cult-favorite pink wedding shade. With pops of bright teal and light navy sprinkled throughout, these colors are fun and funky with a level of sophistication. Go for a fresh spring look by incorporating white, or deepen the palette for fall by adding in rich golds and deep greens.
4 SUNSET Who doesn’t love a beautiful sunset? Let the colors of the sky inspire your day with a color palette that is perfect for a fall wedding. Opt for a dusty or muted orange paired with varying neutrals, rusty reds, and burgundy shades. The best part? These shades would pair wonderfully with rose gold or true gold metals, so the choice is yours! The warmth of the palette will radiate throughout your special day with romantic undertones and charm. 2 DUST Y ROSE This deep rose hue has been popular for quite some time, but there is just something about pairing the shade with smokey grays, deep burgundy tones, and pops of copper. While this palette may work best for fall or winter weddings, there are many ways to lighten up the vibe for a spring or summer shindig. Photo Courtesy of greenweddingshoes.com

No matter the season your big day falls into, this color palette offers a clean, cohesive look that can be transformed into a variety of stylistic choices. WEDDINGS
tori’s
timeless wedding gown By Jeweliana Register The Veil Wedding Photography
As August quickly rolled around last year, Tori Jackson was busy planning the wedding of her dreams with her now husband Mason Tyler. The singer and songwriter was giddy about her upcoming wedding day, but there was one problem: Tori had yet to find the dress of her dreams. Tori, along with her bride tribe and family, had gone from shop to shop searching for the gown she would walk down the aisle in, but was disappointed each time, leaving the shops empty-handed and a bit discouraged. After deciding that her mother’s dress did not feel right for the day, she remembered that her Aunt Missy had a beautiful white dress in her closet that had never been worn. Flash forward to Tori trying on the stunning white dress that fit her perfectly and ultimately saying “yes” to wearing it down the aisle. Tori had actually tried on the dress a few times in the past, but never felt like she had the right time to wear it. “I absolutely loved the dress! I had tried it on for prom and different events in the past, but it just never was what I wanted at the time,” Tori explains. “I tried it on this time, and it was perfect! I immediately knew that this was the dress.” The story behind the dress is one that the girls love to tell. Roughly 25 years ago, Missy had fallen in love with a gorgeous white dress from The Golden Needle. After seeing her eyes light up looking at the dress, Missy’s grandparents purchased the gown for her, and Missy tucked it away for a special occasion. Little did she know that the special occasion would be her niece’s wedding day so many years later! “Both of my great-grandparents have passed now, so it was so cool that they bought my wedding dress without even knowing it!” Tori expresses. “It was really sweet and special for me and my family.” 118 |
FamilyMagazine
During their outdoor Florida wedding in August, Tori was thrilled to have a dress that was lightweight and easy to dance in. The couple wrestled with the idea of a first-look photoshoot, but decided to go the traditional route and wait for Mason to see Tori for the first time as she walked down the aisle. “It was so sweet! I didn’t know how he was going to react, but he lost it when he saw me. We were both bawling the whole time,” Tori says. “Later, Mason told me, ‘That is exactly what I pictured you in. I don’t know why, but it was exactly what I pictured, and it was perfect.’” The dress was not the only personal touch to the Tylers’ wedding day, though. The couple celebrated their love with their closest friends and family with a backyard wedding, saying “I do” under an altar the couple built together during their engagement. Tori’s father, Jon Jackson, performed the ceremony, and the couple was led in communion by their pastor as Mason’s brother-in-law played a song he wrote for the couple’s big day. At their reception, Tori and her father danced to “Daddy’s Lullaby,” a song she wrote and sang for her dad years ago. “The whole day was just so us, and it was so special with all the little details,” Tori expresses. “We could not have asked for a better wedding day.”

The day the pair began talking through the site was the very day Taylor had called to cancel her subscription to the site, but the customer service rep encouraged her to give her last month a go, free of charge. That same day, Matthew had considered throwing in the towel on online dating, frustrated that he was putting his heart on the line. Their relationship began unconventionally, with the couple asking each other the tough questions you typically avoid on a first date, let alone a first conversation online. They talked about their dreams for their lives, their hopes for a family, their faith walks and their deal breakers. They clicked immediately and fell in love before they even had their first date a few weeks later.

Flash forward to April 1, and their first time meeting face to face was no joke! The Huggins family had a long-standing rule that any guy who wanted to take Taylor on a date had to first meet her father, Mike. After driving from Melbourne to Lake City to pick Taylor up for their date, Matthew met Taylor’s family who, at the time, were walking through a battle with chemotherapy with Mike. Needless to say, meeting the parents carried a lot of weight, but Taylor, along with her family, quickly fell in love with Matthew. ”My birthday is March 21, and I was taking my dad to a chemo appointment that morning. He called me early that morning and asked if he could pray with me,” Taylor shares. “That was when I knew I loved him, that was before I had even met him in person, and I knew that there was something different about this one.”
The Journey and the Best Day Ever Matthew and Taylor’s journey was nothing short of unexpected, and that rings true in the way their story began and all through their dating period. From an unexpected proposal on Thanksgiving Day to planning their December wedding, the road to marriage definitely had some twists, turns, and unexpected blessings. As the months progressed leading up to the wedding, the Huggins family was still in the midst of a battle against cancer. At the beginning of September, the family found themselves in the hospital, waiting for answers and praying for strength. After a brief hospital stay, on September 13, Taylor was informed they needed to get to the hospital right away, as things were not looking well. In her 4 a.m. fury to get dressed and get to the hospital, Taylor threw on a “best day ever” t-shirt from a recent Disney trip and called her fiancé Matthew to travel from Melbourne to be with the family. After arriving in Lake City with the fastest recorded travel time ever, Matthew and Taylor were married at Mike’s hospital bed in the presence of her father, mother, brother and two aunts. Dustin Buscher performed the ceremony at the hospital, blessing the couple and providing a way for Mike to be a part of his daughter’s marriage ceremony. The newlyweds did not have time to soak in their “just married” period, though, as Mike passed away that evening. “So, our actual wedding date is September 13; so our wedding anniversary is Dad’s Heaven anniversary,” Taylor expresses. “It’s really sweet to me, and my shirt was correct—it was the best day ever. I got married and Daddy got to go to Heaven.” While the day was bittersweet, the couple recalled how great God’s timing is, even when we do not understand it. Matthew expresses that everything in his life had prepared him for this moment, to be there for his wife and her family during such a difficult time. The times he felt broken because he could not cry when faced with tragedy, the times he felt rejected by other relationships, the times he felt so abandoned by God as he went through trials—it was all meant to prepare him to live out his love story. “I realized that all that crud that I went through just really prepared me for this moment. It was just so meaningful for me that everything that I went through up to this point, it was for my spouse,” Matthew explains. “All that coming together that totally never felt logical, and just how frustrated I had been, kind of put all those puzzle pieces into place.” With the pieces all coming together, Matthew and Taylor reflected on their story and how the pieces of their lives seemed to be woven together so perfectly. “God literally put him in place from the minute my dad started chemo. He was there through every chemo appointment, Daddy’s surgery, everything,” Taylor says. “He was there from the beginning, all the way to the end. It’s insane to me how God’s timing is just so perfect. It’s just so true.”
The Wedding Day As their wedding ceremony date of December 1, 2018, quickly approached, the couple was ecstatic to be able to celebrate their union with their friends and family. The ceremony was to be held outdoors on the beautiful grounds of Seven Hills Farm, and Taylor expresses how unconcerned she was with the possibility of rain on their special day. However, with Florida weather being so unpredictable, Taylor finally gave in and created a backup plan in case it did, fully certain she would not need her plan B. As the day progressed, the wedding coordinator and bridal party began to worry about the torrential downpour that did not seem to be letting up. At the last minute, the decision was made to
bring the wedding indoors, and the couple chose to move just their three-stranded cord and communion ceremony, forgoing other decorations that did not matter as much. With the road to the venue being completely mudded out with mud up to their knees, the venue owners began valeting cars so the guests could arrive into the venue safely. The Ruccuccis were so thankful for the support from the venue owners and could not thank them enough for selflessly serving on that day. “I’m looking outside during this torrential downpour, and I make the joke that I saw Noah on his ark floating by,” Taylor laughs. “I thought to myself ‘okay, so this is really it. This would be my luck because Daddy always joked with me about having an outdoor wedding because what if it rained? Nothing went according to the plan, but we went with the flow, rolled with the punches, and made the most out of what we got. The only thing you have control of is how you react and your mindset.”
With their ceremony moved indoors, the bride and groom continued their day as planned, taking communion and reading their vows. When the time came to tie the During the three-stranded cord, the couple worshipped to ceremony, Cory Ashbury’s song “Reckless Love,” expressing in place of the how powerful that moment was for them. “I father–daughter vividly remember worshipping, and it was dance, Taylor like I couldn’t even hear the track, I just heard shared a dance to everyone singing and worshipping with us,” “Butterfly Kisses” Taylor says. “I remember thanking God that I with her mom and got that moment that was so special to us. her brother. We never would have had that moment if the wedding had been outdoors like we planned.” While their wedding day did not go exactly as planned, Matthew and Taylor feel so blessed to have so many special moments they can cherish forever. The road was not always an easy one, and the pair have walked through their share of tough times and good times already. Their love story is a testament to God’s faithfulness and His perfect timing, showing how beautiful it is when all the puzzle pieces finally come together.
