Born on February 12, 1809 In Hodgenville, Kentucky Born into poverty Moved to Perry County, Indiana Had an older sister and younger brother


Hardships • Mother died when he was nine

• His beliefs about the civil war was not shared by his generals, his Cabinet, his party, and most American people


Accomplishments • 1834 was elected into the Illinois state legislature and a member of the Whig Party

• 1837 he passed the bar and became an attorney • Practiced law at the John T. Stuart law firm


Cont. • 1847 to 1849 served a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives • Served as a lobbyist for the Illinois Central Railroad as its company attorney • Joined the Republican Party in 1856 • Became the 16th President on March 4, 1861 • Re-elected in 1864

Abraham’s Death • Was shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. by John Wilkes Booth
