He guided the country through two major events: The Great Depression and World War II He also developed the Social Security System He is the only President to serve more than two terms in office Contracted Polio in 1921, which paralyzed both his legs.
When he was elected, the United States was in the Great Depression. He first re-established trust in the banking systems. He declared a bank holiday. He communicated speeches through radio which help ease fear and worries of the American people and help build their confidence back in the government.
The Great Depression ended with the beginning of World War II. Increased Production of war supplies and machinery help bring the US out of the Great Depression. Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941 which began World War II against the United States and Europe.
