Dedication page: I dedicate this book to my family. Our family has a great time at Christmas each and every year. We share many family traditions just like the Russians.

Country customs: This is a picture of a kid with Ded Moroz (Santa Claus). There is picture of a New Years tree.

This is a picture of the holy supper that is eaten by Russians on Christmas Eve. It is a meatless supper served on a white table cloth.

Holiday customs and traditions: Russian Christmas traditions are similar to American Christmas traditions. We both believe in Santa Claus but theirs is called Ded Moroz. He is also known as Grandfather Frost. He looks very much like "Santa Claus" - except he wore a blue suit. The Russians have New Years trees instead of Christmas trees. Their trees have to be multi-colored. They open their presents on New Year’s Day. The Russians do not have any presents under the tree until that night. Grandfather Frost leaves them under the tree or their pillow. They eat a special meal called the Holy Supper. It is a meatless supper served on Christmas Eve. It is suppose to represent the birth of Christ with the dÊcor on the table. Traditionally, the "Holy Supper" consists of 12 different foods, symbolic of the 12 Apostles. The Russians celebrate Christmas thirteen days after we do. January 7th is the day they celebrate Christmas. January 7th by the Georgian Calendar would have been December 25th by the old Julian Calendar and is why it is still Christmas Day for the Russian Orthodox Church. Many Russians will celebrate along with the rest of us and will then celebrate again on the Orthodox date. The Russians have two Christmas celebrations.

Holiday customs and traditions:

Holiday recipe: Russian Kutya The Kutya is eaten from a common dish to symbolize unity. Some families used to throw a spoonful of Kutya up to the ceiling. According to tradition, if the Kutya stuck, there would be a plentiful honey harvest.

Holiday recipe: Russian Christmas Kutya Recipe 1 cup of wheat 4 cups of water ½ cup of raisins ½ cup of ground walnuts ½ cup of poppy seeds Honey to taste, or 2-3 tbs Salt to taste (if needed) Directions: 1. Wash wheat in cold water, then put it in a bowl or a pot and soak it in water overnight. 2. Pour water out, and wash wheat again. Place wheat in a pan, then add 4 cups of water and cook for a few minutes until it’s ready, you can add more water if needed. 3. Meanwhile, put the poppy seeds in a bowl, pour water over them, cover the bowl and leave it to stand for at least one hour. Then pour water out and grind them using a food processor, a coffee grinder or a mortar and pestle. 4. Put the raisins in a bowl, pour boiled water over them, cover and leave for 20 min, or until they swell, then pour water out. 5. When the wheat is cooked, add honey (you can also add a little salt to taste, if you like), ground walnuts, poppy seeds and raisins. Serve it in a bowl. Enjoy!
