“The Client Vanishes”: Two Part Consultation

Provided by Business Development Expert Charles G. Ehrlich donated by: Charles G. Ehrlich

Fair Market Value: $2,500 While the legal business becomes ever more competitive, studies show a shockingly high level of client dissatisfaction with outside counsel – never mind that virtually every law firm’s website boasts of “client focus.” An ALM report concludes that, “when it comes to client satisfaction, law firms pay a lot of lip service . . . with little follow-up.” Chuck Ehrlich, a Founder of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, was a Big Law partner for almost twenty years. When he became a senior in-house executive, he realized that his client service skills were both typical and appalling. Working with law firms around the world as a client only further convinced him that lawyers do not understand the client mind –- and that they desperately need to. Chuck speaks to enthusiastic audiences from coast to coast about the client mind –- what outside counsel needs to know to stand out from the crowd. Chuck Ehrlich’s presentation of “The Client Vanishes” will provide your firm with valuable insight into the client engagement skills critical to success in today’s legal landscape.

Jeroboam Bottle of Premium Cabernet Sauvignon from Shafer Vineyards donated by: Shafer Vineyards

“Fabulous concentration, a seamless personality, a textbook integration of alcohol, wood, tannin and acidity, an almost endless finish and a voluptuous texture…a colossal wine that will still be going strong in 2050.” -The Wine Advocate

Fair Market Value: $1,350 Hillside Select is a wine of a place, produced each vintage from carefully selected blocks of the hillside vineyards surrounding the winery. These grapes are small and deeply colored, with concentrated flavors enhanced by meticulous winemaking and extensive aging in French oak barrels. Hillside Select consistently expresses the voluptuous fruit, rich flavors and velvety texture that characterize grapes grown in Stags Leap District. In 2007, Stags Leap offered everything a Cabernet Sauvignon vine loves, starting with a dry, warm spring leading to ideal conditions for summer-long fruit development. The lack of rain early in the year gave us smaller-than-usual clusters by harvest time, which resulted in smaller berries with outstanding concentration. Shafer Vineyards is a 32,000 case winery in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District managed by the father and son team of John and Doug Shafer. The Shafer family owns and farms 200 acres of vineyards, sources for Shafer’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah.

Walking in Daniel’s Shoes by Tom Mauser donated by: Tom Mauser

Fair Market Value: $15

Can you imagine being the parent of a victim of a high-profile school shooting? Can you imagine speaking out for gun control in front of a rally of 12,000 people just ten days later? Can you imagine trying to heal while facing harassment from gun rights activists? Tom Mauser will tell you what it’s like. His son Daniel was killed at Columbine High. Tom shares his experiences in a book aptly titled, Walking in Daniel’s Shoes, so named because he literally wears his son’s tennis shoes when he works to honor him. Tom has been a nationally recognized advocate for stronger gun laws. He’s the dad shown protesting the NRA convention in Denver in Bowling for Columbine. Tom’s book recounts how he left his job to lobby the Colorado legislature and served as spokesman for the successful ballot initiative that closed the gun show loophole there; he describes being arrested while protesting at NRA headquarters, and meeting with the parents of the Columbine killers. Offered are three personally signed copies of the book, along with a special bonus: photos of Tom and Daniel, Tom with Colorado’s governor at the recent signing of gun safety legislation and meeting with President Obama. You can learn more about Tom at www.danielmauser.com.

RADHA STERN 4/13/13 1:22:22 PM

In her new book Griefprints: A Practical Guide for Supporting a Grieving Person, Radha Stern offers compassionate and sound guidance for understanding and helping a grieving loved one. She also shares her own moving story. Radha Stern is no stranger to grief. In 1996 her twenty-two-year-old son, Christopher, was murdered, and she started down the long road of healing and coming to terms with her loss. While Stern believes that “closure” is a myth, she is living proof that you can gain solace, acceptance, and the strength to reclaim your life even after the most tragic loss. Stern found support from others who had walked the same path, and she quickly realized that everyone grieves differently. “Grief is like fingerprints; everyone grieves in their own way,” she says. Still, one thing that remains constant is that support from family and friends can nurture the healing process, and make the journey less painful. But so few of us know what to do and say in the face of grief. We agonize about saying the “right” thing and then second guess ourselves no matter what we say, struggle to find ways to be of practical help, and worry that our attempts at being supportive are starting feel like intrusions. In her book, Stern offers straightforward advice and suggestions for helping and supporting a loved one. You are receiving this limited case bound edition of Griefprints: A Practical Guide for Supporting a Grieving Person. The edition available at bookstores is a paperback.
