Apprenticeships What is an Apprenticeship?
What is an Apprenticeship Framework?
An Apprenticeship is ideal if you know which career path you want to follow, but you don’t want to study in full time education and you would like to earn a salary whilst learning.
An Apprenticeship is a set of qualifications that make up a framework.
All Apprenticeships are developed by the industry sector in which they will be used and give learners the skills they need to become a craftsperson, technician or manager in that area. Depending on the course, you will either attend College once a week or on a block basis where you will attend between 2-4 weeks depending on the course chosen. The remaining time will be spent in the workplace. You will be working towards achieving an Apprenticeship Framework.
As an apprentice you are required to complete the following qualifications, which make up the Apprenticeship Framework: • Work based learning qualification such as a Level 2 NVQ • Functional Skills • Knowledge based qualification such as a BTEC Diploma (Technical Certificate) Additionally apprentices will complete Employment Rights and Responsibilities and any occupationally specific training such as Abrasive Wheels or First Aid. There is potential once learners have completed their Apprenticeship to then continue onto the Advanced Apprenticeship. What is an Advanced Apprenticeship Advanced Apprenticeships are similar to Apprenticeships but at a higher level, normally Level 3 NVQ and a higher level knowledge based qualification. Some apprentices will be registered on an Advanced Apprenticeship from day one, these include building services engineering, civil engineering, electrical, facilities management, gas installation and maintenance and surveying.

Business Training Courses We have a number of courses available for businesses and those who are self employed that can help provide you and your business with the skills it needs to stand out and be competitive. This could include refreshing existing skills, new skills for your employees or retraining. We have a number of options from On Site Assessment, Apprenticeships, Industry Specific Short Courses and Higher Education and Professional Qualifications. Details are provided below, however for more information call the Employer Team on 0113 222 6003 or by emailing business@lcb.ac.uk. You can also request a copy of the Business Training Course Guide.
We work with hundreds of employers who have opted to take on an apprentice and they all say it is a very positive and rewarding way of recruiting new staff. They allow businesses to develop apprentices into the ethos of the business, developing the specific skills needed for a specialist workforce. Apprenticeships are available in over 24 construction trades, including brickwork, carpentry & joinery, civil engineering, plastering and quantity surveying. For more information about Apprenticeships see page 22. Industry Specific Short Courses
On Site Assessment and Training (OSAT)
We run a comprehensive range of accredited and non-accredited short courses, designed to support businesses with maintaining quality and regulatory standards within their workforce.
OSAT helps experienced workers get the qualifications to prove they can do the job.
• Computer Aided Design (CAD)
It turns their existing skills and experience into a nationally recognised qualification such as an NVQ or SVQ. Having these qualifications also helps qualify them for a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card. Assessment can be carried out on site, so attendance at College is not required.
Short courses are available in the following areas: • Gas, Plumbing, Refrigeration (ACS, BPEC, F-Gas) • Electrical (AM2, PAT, 17th Edition) • Health and Safety (IOSH, NEBOSH, First Aid, Manual Handling) • Woodmachining
Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are a great way for you to grow your business without the large costs usually associated with recruitment. The current National minimum wage for apprentices is £2.65 per hour, and for 16-18 year olds it is free to send them to College. The current costs for over 19’s are £495 if your business employs less than 1,000 and £995 if you employ over 1,000.
