International projects Leeds College of Building are actively involved with international partners to offer both educational and cultural experiences for our students to complement their studies. The projects offer an opportunity to explore new technologies, construction techniques and materials and aim to further inform career choice. The projects have been invaluable in providing students with the confidence to participate in activities in other countries and to share their experiences of studying and working in construction within different cultures, languages and climates. Leeds College of Building have been working in partnership with Berufskolleg Ost der Stadt Essen in Germany for over 20 years. The links forged with them have allowed students from across the College to take part in an international exchange programme and discover how the lifestyles and work ethics differ with students working in a similar discipline.
16 www.lcb.ac.uk | info@lcb.ac.uk | 0113 222 6061
This has also allowed students to visit the industry in the UK and Germany and develop an understanding of the supply chain, manufacturing process and modern methods of construction. New technologies and innovative construction processes have been compared and the knowledge gained has proven key to professional development and further provides invaluable information to make an informed career choice. The reciprocal exchanges between colleges also enable an educated view of the career opportunities available across Europe and allow the colleges, students and employers to forge links. Work placements have been arranged offering work experience to complement their studies which enhance their development leading to employment. The College has also worked with partners in Portugal, Holland, France and Russia.

success stories Five of the Best Engineering Apprentices Rewarded with QUEST Scholarships Civil Engineering apprentices from the College have been awarded five coveted scholarships from The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and The Queen’s Jubilee Scholarship Trust (QUEST) Committee. The £1,500 QUEST scholarships are a benchmark of excellence, and recognise talented engineers of the future who have been able to demonstrate their current abilities and future potential. Simon Ashburn who works for SJG Temporary Works Ltd, Samuel Hirst who works for Highways England and Stuart Seaton, Hana Sulaiman and Emma Worthington who all work for Tata Steel Projects, were judged on their technical engineering capabilities, leadership skills, ambition and their ability to use their initiative to deliver sustainable engineering solutions. ICE Yorkshire & Humber initially shortlisted 10 applicants for interview after candidates submitted an essay explaining why gaining professional qualifications was important to them. Lecturer Vicky Patterson says: “Our courses are incredibly groundbreaking and have been praised by the ICE for their practical application of the taught syllabus, the positive influence our tutors have on student development and the quality work based experience they offer. “We are delighted that so many of our students have been recognised by the ICE this year as it’s a fantastic endorsement of the quality of teaching and the determination of our students to achieve at the very highest levels.” Nick Baveystock, Director General of the ICE says: “These students are all working hard whilst learning core technical skills at Leeds College of Building. The College consistently produces very talented civil engineers and we were really impressed with the technical content of work experience and the level of responsibility that candidates demonstrated.”

Students Get Technical with Award Wins Two apprentices have been recognised for their outstanding skills by an organisation that encourages and rewards excellence and best practice in the construction industry. Sam O’Sullivan and Sam Dunderdale, who are both studying Civil Engineering at the College took first and second place in the Generation for Change (G4C) awards’ Technical Apprentice of the Year category. G4C is the junior branch of Constructing Excellence Yorkshire & Humber (CEYH) which is run by the Centre for Knowledge Exchange at Leeds Beckett University. A representative from G4C says: “We are passionate about focusing on young people and showcasing their talent and it’s been an absolute delight to see such high levels of skill from the two Leeds College of Building students. It is a testament to them, and the excellent levels of teaching at the College, and both have the potential to play a big part in shaping the future of our industry.” Lecturer Vicky Patterson says: “Both candidates were nominated because of their dedication and enthusiasm for College studies and their NVQs. On top of this they mentor others, undertake science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) events and have become an integral part of community activities. They are up and coming stars that will have a significant role in shaping the future of this country and are both very deserving of the awards.” G4C was established in 1998 as the junior branch of Constructing Excellence sharing joint aims. G4C seeks to harness the power of the next generation of construction professionals in order to drive change for the better by improving the way the industry functions and the subsequent asset outcomes it provides to society.

How Loan Repayments Work
Advanced Learner Loans
You do not need to repay your loan until you have finished studying and started working, and you do not start to pay back your loan until the April after you graduate.
Anyone aged 19 or over and living in the UK* will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for a qualification between level 3 and level 6 (excluding HNC/HND Diplomas and Higher Apprenticeships).
You will begin to pay back your loan once you are earning over the threshold of £21,000 per year. For example, if your course finishes in June 2018 and you get a job paying £25,000 in September 2018, you start repayments in April 2019. If your income falls below £21,000 a year, your repayments stop. For more information on Student Loans, please visit www.gov.uk/student-finance overview or www.slc.co.uk. You can also call 0300 100 0607.
It’s easy to apply and the loans are not means tested or subject to credit checks. What’s more, the loan goes straight to the College to pay for your fees and you don’t pay anything back until your income is over £21,000 per year. To apply for an Advanced Learner Loan you will need to check with the College that the course qualifies and the College will need to provide you with a Learning and Funding Information letter. For the full application procedure and to apply go to: www.gov.uk/ advancedlearnerloan.
